Balta Bordoy is an elegant guitar player from Mallorca, now based in Barcelona, who precisely masters styles like the most genuine blues, swing or jazz. Now he has just released a recording under his own name, selecting thirteen excellent songs, which also include some instrumental ones, that become a varied and interesting range of rhythms that allow us to appreciate his guitar playing versatility, that easily moves among the aforementioned styles.

Bordoy has also counted with an outstanding band which do a relevant work, with Nil Mujal on sax and vocals, Arnau Julià on drums and vocals, besides featuring Víctor Puertas on vocals and Hammond B3, all them masters of their instruments, who manage to make Balta feel totally comfortable to develop a very eclectic blues repertoire where swing and jazz subtly slide with an extreme good taste, something that will surely delight all listeners who look for quality music and enjoy a work displayed with excellent technique but, at the same time, with a good dose of passion and feeling.

In short words, an album that shows the excellent level the blues is reaching in our country, thanks to musicians like those who have participated in this recording. /La Hora Del Blues

The singer and harmonica player Victor Puertas, a Hohner Harmonicas endorser, is one of the notable names in the Catalan scene. He takes part in many projects related to blues music and other African American musics (The Suitcase Brothers; Victor Puertas & The Mellow To- nes; Cool Grinders; Koko-Jean & The Tonics,...) and has shared the stage with many great in- ternational artists (Gary Primich, Little G Weevil, Steve James, Nathan James, Mark Hummel, Sandra Hall, JT Lauritsen, Steve Wes Weston, Grana Louise, Fred Kaplan, Peaches Staten,..).

Victor Puertas is well known as one of the best harmonica players in the Spanish blues scene. Representing a young “new” generation of established artists, Puertas has proven to be a working musician, ambitious and curious, being fascinated in many instruments and styles. Besides being a harmonica player, he works as a piano and organ player. His playing includes many different styles highlighting his virtuosity without losing any of the blues feeling at the same time, satisfying even sophisticated blues audiences. Victor’s career grew exponentially after winning 2nd place at the International Blues Challenge 2013 in Memphis TN and 1st place at the 28th Annual Blues Challenge in North Carolina the same year, along with his brother Santos Puertas, known together as The Suitcase Brothers.

Julien Dubois: Bass

If the name of Victor Puertas is mentioned first on the cover, this disc is shared almost equally between Max Genouel and him. Instrumental, both are at the same level of excellence. We know Victor's superior talent on the harmonica, all his interventions here are remarkable, in the diatonic as well as the chromatic, but also in the keyboards, piano and organ, to which he devotes a large part of his efforts in the session. Is that why we hear it less than we could have wished for the harmonica?

On the guitar, Max takes on more thickness with each outing, delivering another festival of eclecticism, all the more impressive since it remains in tone and good taste. Jump, blues, soul, rock 'n' roll, its riffs strike just right and the rhythmic phrases deserve the attention like solos. On vocals, Victor is soulful while Max is more in energy, even if he manages to channel it as on the slow blues taken from T-Bone Walker Here in the dark . Chuck Berry, with You can't catch me in country blues mode, Sam Cooke with Mary Lou and Bobby Blue Bland with Members only which does not take off as much as desirable, Earl Hooker with the title wink Senorita Juanita , are the others requested authors.

It's the originals that get the most attention, the instrumental jump Hard wood, the blues and rhythm and blues No one like you, Devil's night, My baby used to love me, Good days are gone, Next door neighbor. Their ambiances are bathed in a dull threat, streaked with guitar shards, harmonica solos from space, authoritarian throats, filled with references to the heroes of the two leaders and their accomplices, Julien Dubois on bass and Hugo Deviers on drums. A first disc which calls others. ~Christophe Mourot

"My 'musical soul brothers' Chino and Victor have teamed up to bring you an offering of their combined 'monster' talents with their mastery of acoustic blues. Separately they are true world class virtuosos of their instruments. Together they naturally compliment each other and bring the game to a new level. Every time I get a chance to hear them I am inspired to play better myself!" (Nathan James)
