With a penchant for fuzzy guitar lines and soulfully raw vocals, Adelaide’s Luke Louie Trio walk a similar line to bluesy garage rockers like Benjamin Brooker and The Rubens in reinventing the sounds of the past. Fronted by 21 year old guitarist and keyboard player Luke Ciaramella, the trio have released their debut self-titled EP, a record that boasts an authentically bluesy swagger with just a touch of vocal distortion to accentuate the raw, nostalgic tone of the songs. “We listened to a lot of Otis Redding, and the whole overall sound of the record I wanted to be very raw and very human,” he says. “We used a microphone that used to be a headphone, and the nature of my voice is quite loud and gravelly so it would distort.”
Although Ciaramella’s been playing in bands since the ripe old age of 13, the guitarist was in no rush to jump into the limelight and front own musical wolf pack. “I used to write on the side but I never thought the tunes would ever surface,” he says. “After [previous band] The London Road Poets finished up I wasn’t really playing a lot of original music. I wanted to, but all my mates were in other bands and were pretty happy with what they were doing.”
Luckily, took the shortcut favoured by Hanson and The Kinks and enlisted the closest musician to hand – his brother Michael Ciaramella. “It was really quick,” he says of forming the Luke Louie Trio. “My older brother plays bass… he joined since he didn’t really have anything on.” To round out the group, Ciaramella recruited Uni pal Angus Mason to man the drums. “Angus is an amazing jazz drummer, but I always wanted to play in a blues band with him, he’s got that Mitch Mitchell sound,” he says.
While Ciaramella was happy to play the support role in his first few years on the scene, when it came to stepping up to the microphone he found his years on the right of the stage gave him plenty of preparation for stepping into the centre. “Because I was quite young I was able to watch those guys, watch the frontman, and I really took a lot of performance tips from them,” he explains. “How they carry themselves on stage was really important; playing guitars or keys in a band you’re not used to having attention on you for more than a few bars… so there was a bit of a transition period, but it did come more naturally.”
