Sadly, we lost Kim Simmonds just this past December, but he lives on thanks to Quarto Valley Records who has released Blues All Around, his final album with his legendary blues rock band, Savoy Brown.

The new album from one of the longest running blues rock bands in existence follows Savoy Brown’s critically acclaimed 2022 album, Ain’t Done Yet. Shortly after the new album was completed, Savoy Brown founder, guitarist/ singer/songwriter Kim Simmonds lost his hard-fought battle with cancer on December 13th, just a week after turning 75. While recuperating from his initial cancer treatments, Simmonds had begun work on the new album that was to become Blues All Around.

“The new album continues the approach I’ve been taking with the band this past decade,” said Simmonds, who formed the band in 1965 in London, England. “The big difference with the new album is the multi-layer approach I took to recording the guitar parts. It’s all blues-based rock music. I try to find new and progressive ways to write and play the music I’ve loved since I was a young teenager.”

Blues All Around showcases Kim Simmonds’ most-inspired guitar work and expressive vocals, his illness during the recording sessions leading him to play a great deal more slide guitar than on previous albums.

“I enjoyed making this album perhaps because I approached the recording in a different manner from the usual ‘live in the studio’ format I’ve always used,” Simmonds says in the album liner notes. “Here’s how it went. My tracks, guitar, vocal, etc., were laid down first. Pat and Garnet then added bass, drums and percussion and the whole process worked beautifully. They clinched the deal using my tracks as a guide. Brilliant work. They’re heaven sent. The concept wasn’t my brainchild. Studio owner and engineer Ron Keck suggested the approach to make things easier, due to my failing health and I’m forever grateful. John Shelmet was another angel in the preparation stages. He suggested I play slide guitar when the neuropathy affecting my fingers made single string playing difficult. Good idea!! My wife Debbie was a great help as well in the mixing stage. She added an extra set of ears and a source of helpful suggestions as we moved along … often at lightning pace. You have to be quick on your feet in the recording of an album. Things not working have to be put aside and new ideas have to be decided upon quickly so the creative forces don’t grind to a halt. I do have a quick mind which helps …. and sometimes hinders! I do push events forward rapidly. Life is energy. Music is energy. Enjoy listening to this set of energetic blues/rock songs as much as I’ve enjoyed making it.”

Longtime fan and critic favorites, Savoy Brown birthed in London 57 years ago and have been based in upstate New York for many years. Kim Simmonds had been the group’s guiding hand from the first singles released in 1966 through this newest effort, Savoy Brown’s 42nd album. On the new record, Simmonds (guitar, harmonica, organ, and vocals) was once again joined by his long-running bandmates Pat DeSalvo (bass) and Garnet Grimm (drums/percussion).

Seeking a different approach, Simmonds dissolved the group and brought in guitarist Dave Peverett, bassist Rivers Jobe, drummer Roger Earl, and singer Chris Youlden, who gave them a distinctive frontman with his vocal abilities, bowler hat, and monocle.

With perhaps their strongest lineup, Savoy Brown quickly made a name for themselves, recording originals like "Train to Nowhere." However, Youlden left the band in 1970 following Raw Sienna, and shortly thereafter, Peverett, Earl, and new bassist Tony Stevens departed to form Foghat, continuing the pattern of consistent membership turnover. Simmonds collected yet another lineup and began a hectic tour of America, showcasing the group's now-refined bluesy boogie-rock style, which dominated the rest of their albums. The band briefly broke up in 1973, but re-formed the following year.

Throughout the '80s and '90s Simmonds remained undeterred by a revolving-door membership and continued to tour and record. Savoy Brown's first album for the Blind Pig label, Strange Dreams, was released in 2003, followed by Steel in 2007. Subsequent LPs include the compilation Too Much of a Good Thing, Voodoo Moon, Goin' to the Delta, and 2015's The Devil to Pay. In 2017, the band returned with the full-length Witchy Feelin', which hit number one on the Billboard Blues Albums chart. Legendary British Blues Rock band Savoy Brown led by founding member Kim Simmonds, announces the August 28th release of their exciting new album, “Ain’t Done Yet”, on Quarto Valley Records. The new album follows Savoy Brown’s critically acclaimed 2019 album, “City Night.”

“The new album continues the approach I’ve been taking with the band this past decade,” says guitarist/singer/songwriter Kim Simmonds, who formed the band in 1965 in London, England, and is one of the longest-running Blues Rock bands in existence. “The big difference with the new album is the multi-layer approach I took to recording the guitar parts. It’s all blues-based rock music. I try to find new and progressive ways to write and play the music I’ve loved since I was a young teenager.”

Energetic blues has been the calling card of the band from the beginning. Blues Rock became the catch-all phrase in the late 1960s to describe the band’s music along with that of contemporaries including Cream, Fleetwood Mac, and Jimi Hendrix.

Along the way, Savoy Brown has toured continuously, making it one of the longest-running blues-rock bands in existence. Through the years, the band has headlined concerts at many prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Fillmore East, the Fillmore West, and London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

Savoy Brown, having established national status in the 1970s, provided other groups opportunity. Kiss opened the bill on a Savoy Brown national tour as did ZZ Top, The Doobie Brothers and many, many more acts.

A resident of the USA since 1980, bandleader Simmonds has received many accolades himself. These include placement on the front cover of Guitar Player magazine, enshrinement on the Hollywood Rock Walk of Fame and acceptance in many regional “Halls of Fame” in the USA and Canada.

Savoy Brown helped spawn the 1968 UK Blues Rock boom and later opened the eyes of many 1970s, American teenagers, to their own home territory blues artists.

The British R&B boom of the early 1960s led directly to the British Blues Explosion in 1968. The original London R&B boom led by The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Pretty Things and, to some extent, The Beatles, quickly moved into mainstream pop and left a vacuum in the London clubs.

This vacuum, in London, was filled in the mid-1960s by John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton and Savoy Brown’s Blues Band featuring Kim Simmonds.

“Ain’t Done Yet” kicks-off in high gear with the album’s first radio focus track, “All Gone Wrong”. “I’ve always liked All Gone Wrong, and it’s one of my favourites on the album,” declares Simmonds.

Savoy Brown will support the release of “Ain’t Done Yet” with a late summer tour that extends through 2021.

The three-piece lineup includes Kim Simmonds on guitar and vocals, Pat DeSalvo on bass and Garnet Grimm on drums. This trio has established itself as the longest-running consistent line-up in the band’s history, now going strong for more than 10 years. ~Blues Matters
Take the six minute six second drive down ‘Devil’s Highway’ which follows that cracking opener – it’s a languid lonely drive that has a little Cris Rea, a little Dire Straits in the mix, and it’s a surprisingly smooth ride but it’s that lead guitar that shines above the horizon driving you on.

And there are eight other great songs here that come at you from all angles like the Folkier, slide-infused ‘River on the Rise’; the stuttering barroom blues of ‘Borrowed Time’ and the traditional swing and groove of the title track ‘Ain’t Done Yet’.

When you add the variety that comes with the likes of the stripped back acoustic shuffle of ‘Rockin’ in Louisiana’ versus say the darker, fuzzier Hendrix-touched ‘Soho Girl’ you not only get a nice rocking ride but you end up with an album that reinforces the axiom – Savoy Brown clearly ‘Ain’t Done Yet’… ~Mark Rockpit

Savoy Brown's founding leader unplugs once again for his second solo outing. Considering that his band has released some lackluster, highly derivative, and plain plodding boogie material, especially in the '80s and '90s, this subtle set is remarkably affecting in its low-key, moody intensity. Simmonds doesn't have a great voice, but it works well in this stripped-down setting dominated by originals that sound like classic covers. A nearly eight-minute version of Jimmie Rodgers' title track is the album's centerpiece, yet the entire disc is an emotionally stirring showcase for a style of music seldom associated with the traditionally spotlight-stealing leads of Simmonds' electric blues band. Piedmont, folk, and Delta approaches are all evident, with an Indian feel heightened by simmering congas on the appropriately titled instrumental "Rag Ah." Drums and bass make an appearance on two tunes, one a cover of J.J. Cale's "Hold on Baby" that takes the already greasy song into the Mississippi swamps. The closing "Blues for Lonesome" instrumental (the entire CD is dedicated to his old bandmate and later Foghat founder Lonesome Dave Peverett) shows Simmonds' exceptional slide prowess and is a touching coda to an extraordinarily moving and introspective acoustic blues album. It proves that Kim Simmonds is talented enough to be in the top ranks of '60s British blues guitar legends, a category where he's often considered an also-ran. ~Review by Hal Horowitz

With Kim Simmonds and Chris Youlden combining their talents in Savoy Brown's strongest configuration, 1969's A Step Further kept the band in the blues-rock spotlight after the release of their successful Blue Matter album. While A Step Further may not be as strong as the band's former release, all five tracks do a good job at maintaining their spirited blues shuffle. Plenty of horn work snuggles up to Simmonds' guitar playing and Youlden's singing is especially hearty on "Made up My Mind" and "I'm Tired."

The first four tracks are bona fide Brown movers, but they can't compete with the 20-plus minutes of "Savoy Brown Boogie," one of the group's best examples of their guitar playing prowess and a wonderful finale to the album. This lineup saw the release of Raw Sienna before Lonesome Dave Peverett stepped up to the microphone for Looking In upon the departure of Youlden, but the new arrangement was short lived, as not long after three other members exited to form Foghat.

As part of Savoy Brown's Chris Youlden days, A Step Further should be heard alongside Getting to the Point, Blue Matter, and Raw Sienna, as it's an integral part of the band's formative boogie blues years. /Mike DeGagne, AllMusic

The third release by Kim Simmonds and company, but the first to feature the most memorable lineup of the group: Simmonds, "Lonesome" Dave Peverett, Tony "Tone" Stevens, Roger Earl, and charismatic singer Chris Youlden. This one serves up a nice mixture of blues covers and originals, with the first side devoted to studio cuts and the second a live club date recording.

Certainly the standout track, indeed a signature song by the band, is the tour de force "Train to Nowhere," with its patient, insistent buildup and pounding train-whistle climax. Savoy Brown went on to long-term success in America, despite some members of the band (guitarist/vocalist "Lonesome" Dave Peverett, bassist Tony Stevens and drummer Roger Earl) leaving to form Foghat. Savoy Brown are still gigging and recording today.

In the process, the band became part of the framework that launched the rock and roll music of the 1970’s. Their influence now stretches into modern rock as we know it today.

Though much early rock & roll was based in the blues, Blues-Rock didn't fully develop into a subgenre until the late-'60s. Blues-rock emphasized two specific things -- the traditional, three-chord blues song and instrumental improvisation. Borrowing the idea of an instrumental combo and loud amplification from rock & roll, the original blues-rockers -- bands like Cream that grew out of the Alexis Korner and John Mayall tradition of British blues, as well as American bands like the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Canned Heat -- also attempted to play long, involved improvisations which were commonplace on jazz records, as well as live blues shows. The hybrid became quite popular and the bands that immediately followed them were louder and more riff-oriented. Out of this approach came heavy metal and Southern rock, which both used basic blues riffs and featured extended solos. In the early '70s, the lines between blues-rock and hard rock were barely visible, as boogie-based bands like ZZ Top employed album-rock production techniques that tended to obscure their blues roots. However, blues-rock soon backed away from hard rock, and there was a set number of acts that continued to play (and rewrite) blues standards as well as write their own songs in the same idiom. In the '80s and '90s, blues-rock was more roots-oriented than in the '60s and '70s, even when artists like the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughan flirted with rock stardom. By the '80s, blues-rock had become an accepted tradition, much like the blues.

If the sleeve of Witchy Feelin' suggests that Kim Simmonds, too, has a tendency towards the macabre, then Savoy Brown's iconic leader is happy to confirm it. "Blues has always dealt with themes of the Devil, witchcraft and so forth, and I've always written along those lines. At least three of the songs on Witchy Feelin' have that hoodoo vibe..." Witchy Feelin' proves the Devil still has all the best tunes. From the thrillingly brittle guitar riff that opens Why Did You Hoodoo Me, we are in the hands of a master, with Simmonds reigniting the seismic vocals and searing fretwork that established Savoy Brown as linchpins of the '60s British blues boom. Recording alongside Pat Desalvo (bass), Garnet Grimm (drums) and engineer Ben Elliott, Simmonds leads us into a world of dark nights, wild weather, women and whiskey: all perennial themes given a modern twist by this ageless bluesman. Back in the old days when a band released their ‘once in a career live album,’ fans had to imagine that they were there, or to try and recall the last time they had seen the band in concert; but, now with state of the art video technology and willing promoters creating CD/DVD packages such as this combination, everyone’s a winner; for, not only are you able to see and hear the experience but, re-live either, time and again.

The venue is The Musiktheater Piano, Dortmund in Germany; the date is 5th May, 2012. The theatre’s interior is a comforting and compelling intimate mixture of a local church hall and a BBC sound stage, with the drums placed upon the small stage and the rest of the band strolling in front. The proceedings kick-off with “Twenty-four/Seven,” a lively saxophone and guitar led, fast moving shuffling workout. The 12 numbers found here are spread over a hugely enjoyable 75 minutes.

There is a fine balance of new material from the last album “Voodoo Moon” and older numbers such as; the urging, funky riffing “Looking In,” with its bluesy caressing picking interlude at its centre then leading into the rolling and Sax blasting “Street Corner Talking,” with Kim providing rocket fuelled guitar passages. “She’s Got The Heat,” continues with rip-roaring, searing and burning slide that nails you to the floor accompanied by a vicious stabbing backbeat, just for good measure. Without a doubt the jazz riff that Kim threads into “Time Does Tell,” is an absolute delight as are the slowing false endings and Joe Whiting’s snarling, growling vocals and sublime saxophone work. “Voodoo Moon,” is delivered with a heavy menacing clarity; from the pulsating drum work from Garnet Grimm to the raucously rousing guitar work from Kim.

Pack a bag. Buckle up. Hit the gas. Goin’ To The Delta invites you to ride shotgun with Kim Simmonds on a musical road trip through his spiritual homeland. “When I started the band back in 1965,” says Savoy Brown’s iconic frontman and guitarist, “The concept was to be a British version of a Chicago blues band. Now, here we are in 2014, and once again, the music on this recording echoes the blues sounds of Chicago.”
Released in February 2014 on Ruf Records, Goin’ To The Delta is the sound of a band with the wind in their sails. Following 2011’s acclaimed Voodoo Moon and last year’s whip-cracking live set, Songs From The Road, Savoy Brown are in a swagger, and you can hear the momentum on these 12 love letters to American blues. Rather than reinvent the wheel, Kim applies his own unmistakable thumbprint to the classic blues shapes, from upbeat Windy City bouncers like “Laura Lee” and “Nuthin’ Like The Blues” to the weeping slowie “Just A Dream” and the stinging instrumental, “Cobra.”
“The band’s style has evolved in many directions, whilst always keeping the blues as its root,” says Kim of the Savoy Brown back catalogue. “Now we’ve come full circle. The songs and playing on this album are straightforward in focus and as basic as blues should be.”
Maybe so, but when it comes to the lyrics, Goin’ To The Delta gets complicated. Kim has always been a great chronicler of human relationships, and the women come and go on this album, too, from the ex-lover who changes the locks on the raunchy “Sleeping Rough”- to the mistress who lets him sneak out the back-door on “Turn Your Lamp On.” Along the way, there’s sorrow on “Sad News” (“I’m like a star without a sky”) and redemption, too, in the closing Going Back (“I’m going back to my baby, been away too long…”).
Like the women, plenty of musicians have flowed through the Savoy Brown lineup over the years, but after the stellar contribution of Pat DeSalvo (bass) and Garnet Grimm (drums) to Songs From The Road, it was a no-brainer to assemble that same rhythm section at Subcat Studios, Syracuse, New York. “The band on this album gets to show what great blues musicians they are,” says Kim, “Playing tunes right in their wheelhouse. Through the changing years, my guitar playing has stayed the same, though many say I’m playing guitar better than I did in the ’60s.”
Anyone with even a fleeting knowledge of blues-rock will appreciate that’s no small statement. Rewind to 1965, and Kim was a lynchpin of perhaps the most exciting scene in history, establishing Savoy Brown in the first wave of British blues boomers, signing to Decca, opening for Cream’s first London show and being namedropped in the same breath as peers like Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix (with whom he jammed). Even then, the guitarist was emerging as the band’s driving force. “I had a vision,” he says. “And the exciting thing now is, that vision is still alive.”
Soon enough, Savoy Brown had achieved what most British bands never did – success in America – and became a major Stateside draw thanks to their high-energy material and tireless work ethic. “There’s way too much said about sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll,” Kim told Classic Rock magazine in 2008. “It’s such a cliché. We were all extremely hard-working guys. When we came over to America, we were like a little army. I look at that time as being filled with incredible talent.”
Times changed, of course, and by 1979, Simmonds had moved from a London he no longer recognised – “The punks were everywhere!” – to settle permanently in New York. The Savoy Brown band members came and went, and the music scene shifted around him, but the guitarist stuck thrillingly to his guns and reaped the rewards, performing in iconic venues like Carnegie Hall and the Fillmore East and West, releasing more than 30 albums, and later enjoying a well-deserved induction into Hollywood’s Rock Walk Of Fame.
Coming up on 50 years in the making, Kim Simmonds’ career is sprawling and eclectic, but every move he’s made has always been underpinned by his deep love for the blues. Now, in February 2014, Goin’ To The Delta continues to bring that passion to the surface, channeling the classic vibe of the US blues masters through Kim’s modern worldview to create a musical statement that is both fresh and familiar. “Maybe Shuffles, Boogies and Blues should have been the album’s title,” notes the bandleader. “It’s certainly what you’ll be listening to for the next hour or so …”

Thirty-five years after its debut album, Savoy Brown is still flying the banner of British blues rock, still recording and still drawing enthusiastic crowds, including during a four-month U.S. tour in early 2002. Among the best loved, most respected and longest running of its genre, Savoy Brown is one of the magical names in blues rock.

The Best Of Savoy Brown edition of 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection (Polydor/UME), released May 7, 2002, brings together 11 of the band's classic tracks from the late '60s and early '70s, each digitally remastered.

Nineteen-year-old guitarist Kim Simmonds formed the band in 1966. Explosive live performances eventually led to Savoy Brown signing to Decca. But it was 1969 before its classic line-up gelled around Simmonds, guitarist "Lonesome" Dave Peverett and monocle and bowler hat-clad vocalist Chris Youlden. That year's Blue Matter and A Step Further albums conjured up at least three classics heard on The Best Of Savoy Brown: "Train To Nowhere," the live show-stopper "Louisiana Blues" (a Muddy Waters number) and "I'm Tired." Since its first visit, Savoy Brown had criss-crossed the U.S., and "I'm Tired" became the group's first hit single here. The band would find a greater reception in America than in its native England throughout its career.

1970's Raw Sienna followed, featuring "A Hard Way To Go" and "Stay While The Night Is Still Young." When Youlden then departed for a solo career, Lonesome Dave took over the lead vocal chores. Looking In, also 1970, sported not only "Poor Girl" and "Money Can't Save Your Soul" but one of the era's memorable LP covers, a troglodyte-like savage staring into an eye socket of a monstrous skull. Later, Peverett, bassist Tone Stevens and drummer Roger Earl departed to form the immensely successful but decidedly rock Foghat. Simmonds soldiered on, recruiting from blues band Chicken Shack drummer Dave Bidwell, keyboardist Paul Raymond and bassist Andy Silvester, and from the Birmingham club circuit vocalist Dave Walker.

The new line-up was a hit. On stage in America, the group was supported by Rod Stewart and the Faces. On album, Street Corner Talking (1971) and Hellbound Train (1972) launched favorites "Tell Mama," "Street Corner Talking," a cover of the Motown standard "I Can't Get Next To You" and the nine-minute epic "Hellbound Train" (decades later Love & Rockets adapted it as "Bound For Hell"). Walker then quit to join Fleetwood Mac.

Personnel changes would continue. But Savoy Brown, and the British blues rock it represents, has continued on.
