Rochester based blues band Aldis and the Blue Cats have released a new CD titled “Mosquito Water”. The band, Aldis Lemesis (guitar/vocals), Janet Plummer (vocals), Rob Hembree (drums), Ted Johansen (bass) and J. Paul “Bullet” Parker (harmonica) play a mix of originals and covers and are a staple of the Lilac city’s blues scene.
The title track starts it off with a thick swampy blues sound and vocals from Plummer as Lemesis lays down his minimal note solos and fills. “Bullet” Parker also adds some harp on this one. “Boom Boom”, the John Lee Hooker classic, again finds Plummer, Parker and Lemesis showcasing their chops. Lonnie Johnson’s “Working Man Blues”, Charles Brown’s “Stepped In Quicksand” and J.D. Loudermilk’s “Tobacco Road” all receive the same classic interpretation from the band.
“I’m Sorry” from the Kim Wilson/Fabulous Thunderbirds catalog gets an exceptional treatment here. Janet Plummer seems most comfortable belting out this Texas blues staple. “Eleven Hours”, written by Lemesis, features him on vocals and guitar. This slow blues tune features some of the best guitar work on the CD. The CD ends with another Lemesis original, the instrumental, “Swamp Haze”.
