RL Boyce is the reigning master of hill country blues. A one-time drummer for Jessie Mae Hemphill, he took up blues guitar at the age of 22, but it was 30 years before he recorded his first album. This year, at the age of 62, he released his second album, Roll and Tumble, out now on Waxploitation. Boyce makes his UK debut at the Blues Kitchen in Shoreditch, London, on 25 October and the Blues Kitchen, Camden, on 26 October.

R. L. Boyce is a Grammy nominated American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist born and raised in Como, Mississippi, United States. He is a protege of Hill country blues musicians including R.L. Burnside, and Mississippi Fred McDowell. Boyce began his career in the early 1960s playing drums for his uncle, the fife and drum performer Othar Turner. Later he was the drummer for Jessie Mae Hemphill and is heard on her 1990 album, Feelin' Good.

His debut full-length album, entitled Ain't the Man's Alright was released when he was 52 years old and featured musicians including Cedric Burnside, Luther Dickinson, and Calvin Jackson. His second album release, Roll and Tumble was released on September 8, 2017 on Waxploitation Records. The album included the father and son double drumming team of Cedric Burnside and Calvin Jackson. Band of Heysek is a bunch of guys who compose and play sensuous and emotional songs. Their blues are raw and dirty.

The band was formed in 2015. All three musicians have known each other for a very long time and very well from various Brno bands. Their zero concert at the Eurotrialog festival in Mikulov was so popular that they received an invitation to the next year, but also an offer to precede the famous The Smokie in Ostrava (2015). Since then, they have given concerts in clubs and festivals, especially in the Czech Republic, but also in Poland, Bosnia and Slovakia, including the famous BluesAlive (2017).

In the autumn of 2018, they accompanied a trio of bluesmen from Mississippi on a Czech-Polish mini-tour with a stop at BluesAlive in Šumperk. In the summer of 2019, on the other hand, they headed with their concert set to their home festival in the US North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic. At the end of their blues tour, they visited the recording studio in Water Valley with two rare guests - Kenny Brown and RL Boyce (nominated in 2017 for a Grammy Award in the blues category). From the two-day recordings, the band prepared two separate albums for release, of which the first "Band Of Heysek - Juke My Joint" is out now.

Raw, minimalistic blues-rock with a punk attitude, the brothers Bauer welcome you to a "Place Called Hell."
Like Fat Possum's straight blues releases, this has an almost documentary rehearsal production feel, with bashing drums that never settle into definite rhythms, harsh and often hard-to-decipher vocals, and frequent one-chord grooves.
Fife drum patterns are heard in a few tunes, but despite the title they're a pretty minor ingredient in the overall album. The vocals have some real weathered passion and the blues guitar riffs aren't bad, but it does get monotonous, even grating, to mostly hear variations on one pissed-off song.

The North Mississippi Allstars were invited to play the 2004 Bonnaroo festival, but instead of just bringing the band itself, they brought along all kinds of friends and family and dubbed it the North Mississippi Hill Country Revue. North Mississippi appears to be an incestuous musical community (just take a look at the players on R.L. Burnside's and Junior Kimbrough's albums), and this show comes off as a giant, joyous family affair. There are the Dickinsons: Luther and Cody along with their legendary father Jim, and three generations of Burnsides with R.L., sons Duwayne and Garry, and grandson Cody (R.L.'s wife was there too). In addition, Othar Turner's Rising Star Fife & Drum Band is being carried on by Othar's grandsons, and bassist Chris Chew and JoJo Hermann would have to be considered members of the extended family, having played with all those folks. The North Mississippi Allstars brand of roots rock and Mississippi blues seems tailor-made for a festival like this, and the good times shine through the great music. It's a loose, rambling set that occasionally drags a bit during introductions and audience interaction, but when the band gets down to playing, some real magic happens. They can play just about anything convincingly, from greasy Mississippi blues like "Snake River Drive" to sounding like the Band on Ry Cooder's "Boomer's Story," even making music from just an electrified washboard (wah-wah washboard) and cigar box guitar (no fooling!). Luther's slide can't help but remind one of Duane Allman, even when he's slipping Dr. John quotes into "Down in Mississippi." They know their history too, dipping into the Mississippi Sheiks songbook while performing with the Rising Star Fife & Drum Band ("Station Blues" aka "Sittin' on Top of the World" goes back to 1930 or so). There are high points throughout the album, but they really hit their stride on the last three tunes or so. No flash, no egos, and no pretension, just genuine American music played from the heart.

This latest collection of songs was recorded over two days. Everything was done on the first take, giving listeners a rare glimpse into the kind of masterful jams that pop up at backyard parties and get-togethers in the Hill Country. The recordings were co-produced by North Mississippi All-Stars leader and Black Crowes collaborator Luther Dickinson, and David Katznelson. Dickinson also appears as a musician on the record.
To properly capture the sound of RL and his friends, you set up the mics, get the hell out of the way and let the hypnotic boogie take over.
As R.L. himself says, “Most of it, when somethin’ hits my mind, I just start. I don’t do no rehearsin’ with nobody. I don’t do nothin’ like that. Whatever hits me, I jump in on it.”
They say the greatest players are so tight they are loose. This is that.

Co-Producer Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars):
This is the most important honest to God Hill Country Blues Record made since R L Burnside's A Ass Pocket Of Whisky. The only record capturing the father and son double drumming team of Cedrick Burnside (RL Burnside's drummer and grandson) and Calvin Jackson. RL Boyce is a first hand protégé of Fred McDowell, Ranie Burnette and RL Burnside but with an added rhythmic edge he honed from his time playing drums with Jesse Mae Hemphill. RL's endless boogie keeps the She Wolf style alive. The record is a revelation of improvised blues lyrics, my favorite being, "bury me face down. don't come to my funeral looking to see my face, you won't see nothin but ass and nuts."
Lightnin Malcolm laid down the 2nd guitar bass line with R.L. throwing in abstract blues splashes of lead guitar. I laid out with the slide until he would ask me to play, "Give it to me. I need it." RL and I formed our friendship and both learned to play hill country blues sitting on Otha Tunrer's front porch. He would berate us if our playing seemed uninspired but if we got a feeling raised up he would jump, throw his hat down start dancing and singing eventually passing around his own ass pocket of corn whisky. That is what RL and I lived for in those days.
