Call back lost time. In life, as Buddy Guy asserts in "You Sure Can't Do", that's not possible and it's the cause of much reflection as years speed by. On the other hand, calling back time is exactly what compilations such as this can do. They enable us to revisit the early stages of Buddy's career or to highlight the ongoing development of another such as Ike Turner, in this case a couple of years before his breakthrough with Tina Turner with "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" and "A Fool In Love". It worked out fine for Tina, of course, but Ike may have felt more affinity with the second title.

Two other artists are featured here; Betty Everett, caught some five years before her soul successes and supported by Ike and his Kings Of Rhythm, and Jesse Fortune, a powerful but little-recorded singer here backed by Buddy, Walter Horton and Lafayette Leake. Both Ike and Buddy spent much of their time as backing musicians, Ike (who aslo functioned as fixer, talent scout and producer) because as a workaholic his one desire was to make hit records and Buddy since he was the best and most requested guitarist in Chicago. /Excerpt from the liner notes by Neil Slaven

Galaxy Records Singles 1962-1972 digitally remastered. A subsidiary of Fantasy, the Galaxy label recorded a diverse assortment of soul and R&B in the 1960s and early '70s. This is a 26-track compilation of highlights from the company's output, covering 1962 to 1972. Landing the occasional minor R&B chart hit, Galaxy couldn't be said to have an especially distinctive label sound, though their efforts were on the whole bluesier than much soul of the era. But this is still a decent grab bag of odds and ends from soul's vintage period, with obscure sides by well-known performers like Betty Everett, Little Johnny Taylor, Lenny Williams, Charles Brown, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Merl Saunders, and a host of unknowns. Especially good are the three sides by Rodger Collins, whose 1966 single "She's Looking Good" (which leads off the CD) was one of the better regional soul hits of the '60s, and was covered by Wilson Pickett for a Top 20 smash a couple of years later. ~Richie Unterberger

Ever the hustler, Ike Turner found himself picking up some extra money on a road trip through Chicago recording for Cobra Records both as a bandleader and sideman. After contributing the sparkle to several Otis Rush classics (an alternate of one of them, "Keep On Loving Me Baby" is found here) and some early Buddy Guy sides, Turner also recorded a handful of sides, scant few of them seeing release until now. This CD collects them all up, including surviving alternate versions, and is a delightful fly on the wall invite to a 1950s Chicago blues session. ~by Cub Koda

On this first volume of Chicago Blues from the vaults of C.J. Records we are treated to recordings originally produced by Carl Jones who started in the music business in the mid-1940s as a singer-songwriter. Carl first recorded for Mercury in 1945, where he was accompanied by Lonnie Johnson on guitar. Carl recorded some fine Chicago Blues, Doo Wop and Gospel for his C.J./Colt and Firma labels as Narvel Eatmon a.k.a. Cadillac Baby had done for his Bea & Baby, Keyhole and Miss labels.

Carl and Cadillac Baby were two black music business entrepeneurs who carved out a nitch for themselves by working and helping to establish homegrown talent, many who went on to build nice careers for themselves with a few like Hound Dog Taylor and Betty Everett who achieved national recognition. /Excerpt from the liner notes by Ron Bartolucci

On this second release of C.J., Colt and Firma recordings of Carl Jones we are treated to six tracks by the legendary Earl Hooker, two of them with Hooker's band backing Little Richard style rocker Harold Tidwell as well as one by Hooker and his band backing Betty Everett. We are also treated to four titles by Lee Jackson who also appears on Wolf's Bea & Baby cds and Wolf's Abco Chicago Blues cds. Two red hot slide guitar rockers are turned in by Homesick James Williamson, Elmore James' cousin and rhythm guitarist (for many a year).

The two preformances by the lesser known Richard Gary with Bombay Carter's Band are superb blues. (Bombay Carter played behind J.B. Hutto as a Hawk on Delmark Records as did Lee Jackson.) Betty Everett's other track on this cd is Betty and none other than Carl Jones himself on vocals under the moniker of "Morris Jones". Of real pleasure and surprise to many fans will be the tunes of Bobby Colquitt & Stringbean, their "Million Dollar Playgirl" could have been a million dollar seller if promoted, and Bobby Davis turns in a nice soulful blues performance on "Sweet Song". /From the liner notes by Ron Bartolucci
