Trenton Cooper began playing the piano at the age of 12, receiving his first lessions from his mother, who played piano at a local church in Hope, Arkansas. Cooper received some musical training in high school and learned from local blues pianists. While attending college in Pine Bluff, he played in jazz and rhythm & blues bands. After graduation he even toured with Jimmy Liggins's Drops of Joy. By the mid-1950s, Trenton quit the road and worked as a high school teacher. He never stopped playing, but limited his performances to an audience of friends who enjoyed his unique style of blues piano playing. When he was traced by blues historian Jim O’Neal in 1976, he was the director of the Co-operative Education office at the University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff. Trenton Cooper's style can be described as blues mixed up with tens in the bass, flashy jazz riffs, jazz chords in the right hand, but always following blues patterns. This music make the listener realize what an important part of blues piano history has been neglected all these years, a gap that is at least partly filled by this album.
