The phenomenon of exceedingly young blues guitarists has reached its logical conclusion. The Generation Blues Experience was co-founded by dedicated 12-year old singer and guitar virtuoso Ray Goren in 2012 in South Central L.A. together with veteran blues septuagenarian, Sammy Lee, and octogenarian, Jamie Powell. A true product of his “generation,” Goren learned from YouTube videos of the legends and was playing blues guitar in gigs before the age of 10. But together with Powell and Lee the band busted age and musical barriers, resulting in a landmark recording of blues power.
“Private Angel’s” seven originals and one cover feature Ray (guitar, vocals), Jamie Powell (guitar, vocals), Sammy Lee (harmonica, vocals), Lester Lands (bass, guitar, vocals), Tadg Galleran and Andrew Bush (keyboards), Albert Trepagnier, Jr. (drums), Terry DeRouen (guitar) and the horn section of Bobby “Hurricane” Spencer (tenor sax) and Dan Weinstein (cornet, trombone). ‘Little Mama’ struts a sensuous Latin-blues groove, Lee singing with sass “Little mama, you know you move so cool. Hey little mama, the way you move so cool. The way you wear those skinny jeans, you ain’t nothing but cruel” as Goren “sings” through his guitar with exceptional expression and confidence. Reminiscent of B.B. King, ‘Private Angel’ is a smoldering slow minor blues with Goren’s startlingly mature vocals “She’s my private angel, she belongs to me. I say she’s my private angel, she belongs to me. When I look into her eyes, love is all I see” and burning, passionate solos.
