A veteran of the old Beale Street scene and once a partner of the legendary Memphis Slim, Laury never got his shot at fame and fortune, or even the opportunity to cut a record. Now, approaching his 80th birthday, Laury finally made his debut and shows on this rollicking, highly delightful CD that his boisterous voice and piano skills remain in good shape. Every number is an original, as Laury opens the session with some uncensored remembrances about old Southern sanitary habits. From there, you get terse, spirited singing, powerful left and right hand piano lines, and a percussive, pounding attack that features octave-jumping forays and furious phrasing. If the Blues world had a piano player extraordinaire and unparalleled, on the one hand, and underestimated and undervalued who deserved much higher attention and recognition, on the other hand, obviously Booker T. Laury is his name. Virtuoso piano player who first recorded in his late seventies, on this compilation collected from concerts on different venues in Austria during "Stars of Boogie Woogie" tour in 1987, Booker T. Laury covers sides by Roosevelt Sykes, Sunnyland Slim, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers and Chuck Berry listening of which makes discussion about authenticity nonessential since covers sound as authentic and original as his own compositions. Unique and distinctive, lowdown, bone deep playing style with accentuated left hand lines if ocean is waiving, whisky soaked voice, self-confident personality whose recorded musical legacy is small but rich and influential, is Mr. Booker T. Laury. When he plays he is dissociated and left alone with the Blues which he felt deeply and tried to deliver in a best known way, through black and white keys, the mission he fulfilled. Without being acquainted with the music of Booker T. Laury, knowledge of Blues piano is incomplete. ~Dimitri

All ten of the artists featured on this new Wolf Records’ release had different levels of success and accolades through their careers, yet share similar upbringings and stories. They honed their chops out of necessity in labor camps, house parties and juke joints – synthesizing individual styles that cannot simply be classified as “Blues,” as their music also incorporates Boogie, Jazz and Gospel. They came from rural communities but brought their talents to the city, where they helped to define the Blues scenes in Chicago, Memphis and Houston. And just as they were influenced by the phantom performers of a pre-war era, they too have influenced many legends of 60s and 70s Rock N’ Roll. So if you are a fanatic, enthusiast and archaeologist of music such as me, you will thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the unique piano styles found on these 20 amazing and thoroughly enjoyable tracks of pure Blues and Boogie Woogie.
