Olav & the Blues Cruise - Unfulfilled Desire

Size: 310 MB
Time: 44:03

Released: 2022
Styles: Blues

1. You Left Me (3:55)
2. Let It Die (6:06)
3. Wasting Time (4:45)
4. The Mail (5:15)
5. Talking Back to the Night (4:35)
6. Southern Fairy (3:55)
7. Lead Me On (5:04)
8. Investigation (6:31)
9. A Man Like That (3:54)

Recently the first album "Unfulfilled Desire" was released with eight songs plus a bonus track, seven of which were written by Olav Boereboom. The band is supported by a number of colleagues on bass, harmonica and vocals. The result is a very nice album with fine blues, varying in style and tempo, so that listening to it remains interesting from start to finish. The two covers are a surprising version of Steve Winwood's "Talking Back To The Night" with lyrics slightly modified by Olav, and "Lead Me On" by Curtis Harding. The lyrics of their own songs are very personal, as evidenced by titles such as "You Left Me" and "Let It Die", with which the CD opens. Very nice is the duet with Suzan Wattimena in "The Mail" and the solid "Investigation", in which guitar and keyboard alternately solo. In short, a great album with excellent music. Definitely recommended.

Electric Sugar - Lead You Out EP

Size: 129 MB
Time: 21:16
File: Flac
Released: 2022
Styles: Blues, blues-rock
Art: Front

1. Shakin' (2:42)
2. Ain't Going Our Way (5:46)
3. Lead You Out (5:53)
4. Little Woman (3:53)
5. Trouble (2:59)

There is a lot of blues in the world, and when a Dutch band appears at the offices of Bluesmagazine, we are happy to make room for it. Well-known names like Julian Sas, King of the World, and AJ Plug have already passed by, but also lesser-known bands such as Bacon Fat Louis, Vendetta Drive, Nienke Dingemans, and Captain Morgan’s Expresse. Fine blues from Dutch soil. We can add The Electric Sugar to this list. This group hails from Overijssel and delivers a fine EP, recorded in their rehearsal space with the help of Sebastian Pierik (SEB Productions). The Electric Sugar is a four-piece band consisting of Thomas Jut (guitar/vocals), Stefan Jansen (keyboards/harmonica), Warner Kijk in de Vegte (drums), and Camiel Drent (bass guitar). The EP, *Lead You Out*, features 5 songs that they recorded 5 times. The version they liked best ended up on this EP. As a reviewer, you often try to pigeonhole what you hear to make it clear to the readership what they can expect. I couldn't pinpoint The Electric Sugar to a single band, yet there are plenty of influences. The piano work in the opening track, Shaking, betrays influences from Cuby and the Blizzards. Meanwhile, Ain’t Going Our Way is clearly reminiscent of The Doors, especially how the vocals and harmonica develop after a solid, guitar-driven start. The Electric Sugar continues with Lead You Out; this third track starts off delightfully languid with a beautiful harmonica intro and builds up in tempo with backing vocals, ending in a wonderful guitar/Hammond solo supported by a thundering bass rhythm. These are songs you can really pull off live. The uptempo Little Woman features a delightful guitar riff that sticks in your head; here too, the bass line sets the rhythm—a catchy track. The closing track, Trouble, is pure rock 'n' roll; fat guitar and tinkling piano contribute to this. With this EP, The Electric Sugar manages to put themselves on the map with five tracks that clearly demonstrate what the band is capable of. A welcome addition to the ever-growing Dutch blues landscape. Feedback sturen

John F. Klaver is a Dutch guitarist, singer, composer and music teacher. He began playing the guitar at the age of eleven, inspired by Gary Moore, Robben Ford and Jimi Hendrix. After graduating, he took private guitar lessons as well as music theory classes at the University of the Pacific in the USA. Back in the Netherlands, he was admitted to the conservatory of Amsterdam and received lessons from Jesse van Ruller, Martijn van Iterson and Eef Albers.

In 2007 he started his own formation, the John F. Klaver Trio, that would later become the John F. Klaver Band. The first accomplishment was the CD “Jetpepper”, that was released in 2008. The second album, “Coming Back For More”, followed in April 2011. The album was a major success, being voted Best Dutch Blues CD 2011. Well-known music magazines also noticed John and devoted several articles not only to the band, but also to the amplifiers and effect pedals that John builds himself under the name of ‘Klaver’.

Also in 2011, John and his band won the Dutch Blues Challenge and thereby were voted Best Blues Band of The Netherlands. The same award was presented to John in 2013 after winning the Dutch Blues Challenge for the second time. In 2024 John won the DBC for the third time, but now as a soloist. The third album “Wheels in Motion” (November 2012), featuring guest musicians Big Pete (Best Dutch Blues harpist 2011) and Evan Jenkins (Matt Schofield Band), also won Best Dutch Blues Album of the year and showed that John F. Klaver and his band should be reckoned among the leading Dutch blues acts.

Personnel: John F. Klaver (guitar, vocals); Eric Dillisse (drums); Iris Sigtermans (bass). Guests: Bob Fridzema (Hammond B-3, clarinet and Fender Rhodes piano); Pascal Lanslots (Hammond B-3); Efraim Trujillo (saxophone); Boy Vielvoye (harmonica).

After a decade of silence, The BluesKings are back in full force. Although the band was on hiatus, the idea of reuniting with Herbie and Jan-Joris never went away. Now, with the fresh energy of newcomers Harm van Essen and Fred Bonthuis, the spark has been rekindled. All the songs on Say Hi are original, written by Herbie with co-writers Harm and Jan-Joris, and performed in that unmistakable BluesKings style. Recorded live, with only a few overdubs to keep the raw edge intact.

The BluesKings draw their inspiration from life on the road and perform a lot of their own material. Guitarist Harm van Essen (of La Ratte, among others) provides that unmistakable old-school vibe. Drummer Fred Bonthuis has been playing rock 'n' roll since the '70s. Jan-Joris Sportel on bass lays down a wonderfully relaxed groove. Herbie provides vocals and harmonica, with a generous dose of creativity and spontaneity. /Blues Magazine

Imagine yourself cruising down the highway with a beat on the radio that won’t let you take your foot off the gas. The drums keep stomping and the guitar is smoking like a Mississippi hay fire. Cops may try to stop you, but they’ll never get you. The vocals roar “catch me if you can”, while the harmonica squeals away like a mock-siren. Little Hat offer a perfect combination if you’re looking for some risk!

Machiel Meijers (Stackhouse) sounds raw and passionate on vocals and harmonica. This couples well with the primitive yet masterful guitar sounds of Dutch Blues Hall of Fame inductee Willem van Dullemen (Groovetones). Four on the floor, ace drummer Paolo de Stigter’s (Dr Velvet) right foot will make you forget there is no bass player in this outfit. It may be tempting to think that lack of bass means lack of power, but make no mistake: this alternative power-trio keeps on rocking so you can keep on rolling! Close your eyes and you can almost see a mean looking one-man band playing a relentless groove in the last remaining corner of a noisy barndance.

Releasing debut album “Wine, Whiskey and Wimmen” and winning the Dutch Blues Challenge have opened the way for the band. Their second album “Rocking This Joint Tonight” is also produced by Little Victor and picks up where they left off: a search for everything rare and sleazy. Think forgotten Louisiana dirt roads and jukejoints at last call. So hold on to your hats, and get ready to shift into high gear! /Bluestown Music

Fat Harry & The Fuzzy Licks - Zero Ten Alley

10. Ignorant Wall (3:51)
11. Swear I Can Hear You (3:36)

Top Dutch blues band Fat Harry & the Fuzzy Licks has released its second album "Zero Ten Alley" (010 is popular code for their hometown Rotterdam). The album is filled with catchy songs that blend soul, funk, R&B into a style that does not shy away from showing respect to the band’s heroes of Afro-American music. All presented in a sound that is very much adding present influences to the classic blues template.

On stage, this highly respected blues unit, always makes sure that their music skills never get in the way of passion and energy. Their musical versatility has lead to a list of international artists that have been happy to work with Fat Harry & the Fuzzy Licks as their European touring band. The band has played with the likes of Preston Shannon, Kat Riggins, John Primer, Curtis Salgado, Giles Robson and Lurrie Bell to name a few.

The band has always had a strong bond especially with Joe Louis Walker. He has been an early inspiration, but in return the Fuzzy Licks have backed him regularly on European stages and Joe Louis actually even recorded a song penned by Harry for his album "Between A Rock And The Blues". One of (if not THE) last recordings Joe Louis Walker did before his passing was a haunting guitar solo on I’m Gonna Leave You for "Zero Ten Alley" - which now sounds like a sinister prophecy.

Other prominent contributions on "Zero Ten Alley" come from soulful blues songstress Robbin Kapsalis and the band’s own saxophone player Jan de Ligt, who sadly passed away shortly after the recordings of this new album. Which, despite these life challenges the band went through, is another highlight in the band’s career reminding us that the blues is still alive. /Bluestown Music

Personnel: Harold "Fat Harry" Dorth (vocals, guitar); Remko Deijl (bass); Jacco van den Heuvel (drums); David Franco (keyboards); Jan de Ligt (saxophone). Special guests: Joe Louis Walker (guitar track 2); Robbin Kapsalis (vocals track 4).

After a 10-year search, the band has truly found its place. No complicated stuff, just a pumping, no-nonsense boogie that leans towards a dirty, voodoo garage sound but always has the blues at its core. In 2021, they released their third album, BFL#3. The album was met with great enthusiasm and quickly opened doors to numerous venues and festivals, both at home and abroad. /Bluestown Music

The Juke Joints - Going To Chicago

Album: Going To Chicago

1. This Is It (3:05)
2. Magic Shoes (2:54)
3. Stax Sound (3:20)
4. Goodbye Baby (4:22)
5. Two Hearts (4:35)

12. Make A Stand (Feat. Ana Popovic) (3:03)
13. Going To Chicago (Feat. Ronnie Baker Brooks & Eddy 'The Chief' Clearwater) (5:24)

When Juke Joints' lead singer and drummer Peter Kempe visited the 2008 Chicago Blues Festival, he was so impressed with Eddie "The Chief" Clearwater's performance there, that he simply had to have a word with him after his show. This resulted in an invitation to their Kwadendamme Blues Festival in 2009. Eddy fired on all cylinders and The Juke Joints excelled as his backing band. This cooperation led to mutual enthusiasm, more shows around Europe and the determination to record together as soon as possible.

The contact with Eddy Clearwater, whose latest album "West Side Strut" was recorded in the Rax Trax Studios with renowned producer Ronnie Baker Brooks, opened up the doors to that same studio for The Juke Joints and in June 2010 they made the long-awaited trip to the home of the blues, Chicago. There they recorded what surely must be The Juke Joints' magnum opus, with a collection of songs that of course includes plenty of the high energy rhythm 'n' blues, and shuffles and boogies that have earned them so much praise. However, there are also ventures up, until now, un-trodden paths.

Stand out tracks include "Stax Sound", which has that inimitable Stax soul groove that Peter Kempe experienced when visiting the legendary Stax studio. There is a heartbreaking ballad, "Goodbye Baby", with some beautiful acoustic guitar and driven on by a massive Hammond organ sound, a track that will no doubt enthuse large, lighter-toting audiences. Guitarist Michel Staat shows his wizardry in the enthralling slow blues "Bad Bad Feeling", and "Strollin' On Lincoln Avenue" is a jazzy instrumental, highlighting Sonnyboy van den Broek's awesome talents on the chromatic harp.

Female blues guitar slinger Ana Popovic shines on slide guitar on "Make A Stand" which evokes fond memories of John Lee Hooker. Absolutely top-notch is the closing track "Going To Chicago", written by Ronnie Baker Brooks especially for this album, with Eddy Clearwater really letting loose on electric guitar. Producer Ronnie Baker Brooks belts out some great guitar solos here as well, and provides solid support on vocals and rhythm guitar. A highly diverse album it has become indeed, which should win The Juke Joints global recognition as one of the most energetic rock rollin' blues bands around.

Sugadaddy & The Honeydrippers - Tune In With...

14. They Don't Want Me To Rock (3:24)

A group of musicians who have known each other for a long time and played together in the past have come together to bring something innovative to the Dutch blues scene. The key word is West Coast blues. That's not the regular blues you hear at every festival, but swing-time music as it was played in the '50s. Music that heroes like Robert Lockwood & Little Walter Jacobs made, not actually reimagined but played traditionally. Everything the Honeydrippers play exudes that same atmosphere, especially at live shows.

Later, artists like Kim Wilson, R.J. Mischo, Junior Watson, and James Harman for example also naturally chose this direction. Not rationally, but simply because this style of music has a good feel and is very accessible to the broader blues audience. Simply because it's good music. The Honeydrippers are a typical audience-oriented live band, playing songs they haven't played before, not even in rehearsals. They also play their own repertoire of original songs.

Personnel: Paul van den Berg (vocals, piano); Thomas van den Berg (guitar); Hans Niemeijer (upright bass); Gerrit Bruining (drums); Erik Niemeijer (harmonica).

The Backbones - Two Track Wonders

Album: Two Track Wonders
Size: 59,2 MB
Time: 25:40
File: MP3 @ 320K/s

2. Love Me (2:45)
3. Icecream Man (4:08)
4. Come On In This House (3:56)
5. Don't Leave Me At Home (3:32)
6. Tramp (4:03)
7. Stranger Blues (4:21)

Here's an excellent 7-track mini-album from Holland’s finest, The Backbones. The band is fronted by the immense personality of Pieter "Big Pete" van der Pluijm, with big-toned harmonica and fine vocals. The other members are Sander Kooiman (guitar), Julius "Lord Julius"’ van Brakel (bass) and Joost Tazelaar (drums) with guest keyboards from Govert van der Kolm. Big Pete is probably one of Europe’s finest musicians, with the band having backed many visiting American players such as Monster Mike Welch and Alex Schultz, as well as being involved in the Lester Butler Tribute Band together with Matt Schofield.

This release came about when their friend Rob van Boeckel had studio time available at New Road Studios in Wijchen, due to a band splitting, and the resulting album was recorded in just one night. This comes highly recommended and should be available at all gigs. Apparently the band have signed for the top American label Delta Groove, with a full length album in the offing for this year – that should be well worth the wait.

The Backbones were among the best European blues bands in the early 2000s, and this Dutch band fronted by Pieter "Big Pete" van der Pluijm had a rotating lineup of 10 musicians. Throughout 2005, The Backbones did several European tours where they served as a backing band for talented musicians from all over the world. During a number of these tours recordings were made at the New Road Studios. All recordings are live to 2 track and contain no overdubs or editing what so ever.

What makes this album special is the fact that it contains four different sessions recorded with some of the blues greats: Matt Schofield, Monster Mike Welch, Mitch Kashmar, and Hook Herrera. The result is outstanding recordings, presented in a sophisticated and gripping way. Modern white blues, at times a bit rocking, at times very bluesy, and even with a touch of jazz. A strong and highly recommended album.

Dutch blues vocalist and harp master Pieter "Big Pete" van der Pluijm may not be a familiar name to American blues audiences, but he's already well-established in the Netherlands – his native home base in North-West Europe. At 23, Pete was handpicked for a European memorial tour to honor the music and memory of legendary harmonica player and vocalist Lester Butler (the Red Devils and Thirteen), backed by several of Lester's original bandmates. The project was met with great success and critical acclaim, so more tours and a CD by the Lester Butler Tribute Band soon followed, securing Pete's arrival on the scene as one of the premier next generation blues performers in the Benelux region.

Since then, Big Pete has gone on to form and record many other successful projects including his debut release "Bathroom Acoustics" by The Strikes, a couple of CDs by the rockin' 50's Chicago blues outfit The Backbones, and most recently, the more progressive and forward-thinking group M.O.C.T. (Men Of Considerable Taste). Pete's growing reputation has also led to tours and performances backing many internationally acclaimed blues artists including Alex Schultz, Mitch Kashmar, Monster Mike Welch, Hook Herrera, Matt Schofield, and Ian Siegal. Pete's informal introduction to the U.S. market materialized in March 2010 with his appearance on The Mannish Boys' 5th anniversary release "Shake For Me." Pete closed out the album in style paying tribute to his hero Lester Butler on the storming New Orleans romp "Way Down South," backed by Kid Ramos, Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott along with special guest pianist Andy Kaulkin, who previously recorded with Lester Butler on the classic album "Thirteen."

Now Holland's best kept secret makes his official American solo album debut with an incredible all-star recording lineup featuring Kim Wilson, Paul Oscher, Al Blake, Johnny Dyer, Alex Schultz, Kirk Fletcher, Kid Ramos, Rusty Zinn, Shawn Pittman, John Marx, Mojo Mark, Rob Rio, Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott. “Choice Cuts” is guaranteed to be an instant classic not to be missed by anyone who considers themselves a true blues lover! /Blues Magazine

‘Big’ Dave Reniers has been known for years as one of the best mouth organ players in Belgium and of course we know him as the frontman of Electric Kings and the Dizzy Dave Band, and this giant sings the blues like no other. His brand new band, Big Dave & The Dutchmen, has been around since 2023 and specializes in pure blues from the 50s and 60s. Where other bands are just echoing, these guys dive deep into it.

Their boogie blues stinks of whiskey and comes straight from the smoky, sweaty clubs of Chicago. They feel it and you can hear it. The band also consists of well-known guys from the genre: Roel Spanjers (Luther Allison, Smokey Wilson), piano and vocals; Mischa den Haring (T-99, Chung Kings) on guitars and vocals; Darryl Ciggaar (Dry Riverbed Trio, Ian Siegal, Minko) on drums and vocals and Dusty Ciggaar (Ian Siegal, The Rhythm Chiefs, Minko), bass guitar and vocals. /André Dieterman

For years now, Wildmen Bluesband has been working on their way in the Dutch blues scene in a passionate manner. Their repertoire, with many own compositions and a cover now and then, clearly indicates this is not a standard blues band. The way Wildmen Bluesband give their music their own twist, shows great creativity of these five musicians. Just that one extra chord, minor note here, seventh note there, makes Wildmen Bluesband an absolutely unique band within the Dutch blues scene.

During the performances of Wildmen Bluesband, the audience gets a musical spectacle that is unparalleled. With Saskia's clear, flawless voice with a volume that amazes you, she guides her men and certainly the audience through a blistering blues afternoon and/or evening. Together with top guitarist Jos, she is the eye-catcher of the band. With on the other side keyboard magician Ruud and behind her 'Ginger Baker' Rob on drums and 'masterpicker' Mark on bass guitar, the band goes wild in no uncertain way.

With unbridled energy and enthusiasm, the audience is torpedoed, as it were, with all kinds of musical and vocal blues forms. That is an art in itself and also the power that Wildmen Bluesband radiates on stage. Because make no mistake, it is not just 5 musicians making music. They are an exceptionally well attuned, tight unit that carries out their mission with full, visible emotion. As for the repertoire - just go like hell to a Wildmen Bluesband gig to experience what this band does to you.

Personnel: Saskia de Nijs (vocals); Jos de Wilde (guitar); Rob Meijran (drums); Mark van Lieshout (bass); Ruud Vuijk (Hammond, piano).

No doubt about it, even white boys can play the blues. The Ides of May do it all the way from the eastern part of Holland, live sober but honest and straight forward. They honour the great classical blues players of whom they have several on their live repertoire.

The Ides of May include an uncompromised style and directness in their blues. Their collective experience on this recording, and the band's progression takes a step further here. At hand, is a well balanced album that comes from a love for the music and recreates the energy and emotion seen at their live performances. The material is mostly original, and well supported by a tight unit (such as only comes from years of playing together). If you are into a tough, electrified blues style, then this one is for you. The originals (which represent most of the songs) on this CD are gems, and were culled from a list of over 40 self-penned songs.

Doctor Velvet - New Breed

Album: New Breed
Size: 75,4 MB
Time: 32:28
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2024
Styles: R&B/Rock mix
Art: Front

1. City Jungle (4:39)
2. Road To Nowhere (2:22)
3. Messed Up (2:05)
4. Snake Pit (2:42)
5. Blue Moon Caravan (6:34)
6. Bad Luck Baby (2:52)
7. Fool's Desire (2:52)
8. Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere (2:39)
9. Put The Hurt On Me (2:17)
10. I'm Crying (3:22)

Okay then, let’s go to the big bad city of Amsterdam for a moment, because that’s where Doctor Velvet hands out their sonic stimulants, from a steaming garage with vintage equipment. Anyone listening to their debut full-length New Breed gets an infusion of a heavy dose of R&B, supplemented with exotic soul capsules and emotional blues pills. It’s the kind of sound making you want to come back for another dose.

David Grutter and Jerome de Vijlder and their talented friends conjure up ten mind-blowing songs from their backpacks, varying in style, tempo and instrumentation. Whether it’s swaggering anthems or bluesy slow-burners, rhythm remains at the heart of it all. The dancefloor-ready previous singles Road To Nowhere and Put The Hurt On Me are present, and on the new tunes we get to see their more subdued side, what also works out well. Even when the mood dips into darker thematic waters, it’s far from a bad trip — take a shaking butt into account as a side effect, though. /Dennis, Add To Wantlist
