Touring since the age of 17, the Sheffield-born Carrack wrote and sang 'How Long', the much-covered 1974 classic from his days with Ace, and was the voice of 'Tempted', from his tenure with Squeeze. Then came such hits with Mike + the Mechanics as the GRAMMY-nominated 'The Living Years' and 'Over My Shoulder', the latter a co-write with Mike Rutherford. Not to mention that another co-write, ‘Love Will Keep Us Alive’, was covered by the Eagles and won a prestigious ASCAP award for Song of the Year. Diana Ross, no less, covered Carrack’s co-write with Nick Lowe, ‘Battlefield’, and as an in-demand collaborator, Paul’s decades of distinction include sessions with The Smiths, Elton John, Roxy Music, B.B. King and countless others, culminating in an invitation from Eric Clapton to join his touring band. Since the turn of the century, Paul has been gaining real, independent momentum since he formed his own Carrack-UK label in 2000 with the landmark ‘Satisfy My Soul’ release. He has quietly built a huge, loyal fan base, the audience that not only devours his albums, but turns out to see his frequent, extensive tours in their thousands. It didn’t happen suddenly. It took years of hard work and application, unfashionable words that signify little in these days of instant fame. As Paul can tell you, he and his band have done their individual time, made their mistakes, applied what they’ve learned, focused on their musicianship and the results are passed on to audiences that flock to their gigs. They in turn are guaranteed to enjoy genuine music performed with skill and mutual encouragement. It’s a simple but sure formula.

Right now, the King Snakes are a refreshing mixture of (relative) youth and experience. The experience starting at the top, for Paul Lamb has spent the last thirty-some years whoopin’ and hollerin’ in clubs in his native North-East plus a later move to London, in concert and on festival stages, creating a personal synthesis of his harmonica heroes and his own unique and innate talent. The first thing you’ll notice about Irish three-piece Crow Black Chicken is that they sound big – remarkably big for a guitar-bass-drums outfit. The second thing you’ll notice (besides maybe the psychedelic artwork) is that the trio’s debut, Electric Soup, overflows with energy. It’s as though the group is driven to seek out whatever sonic boundaries they can find, only to leap across them with both feet. Guitar work rapidly shifts from being loud and dirty to quick and controlled, creating a network of sonic landscape consisting of swirling reverb, metallic flanger, and dirty distortion that begs to be explored.

Electric Soup is undoubtedly about exploration. From the “Flowers” outro, consisting of a guitar freak-out built on top of a sunken, distorted bass backing, to the more sensitive moments of “Epitaph,” Crow Black Chicken has a way of sounding important without losing their home-grown blues-rocker sensibilities. Favoring walk-ups and walk-downs with unique melodic structures, Crow Black Chicken manages to get into some immensely satisfying quirky grooves. “John the Revelator” shows up at the tail end of Electric Soup as a curiosity piece; the traditional gospel blues song is opened with a cappella vocals before being torn to shreds with aggressive guitar work and Christy O’Hanlon’s controlled yelling. Likewise, “John Lee Wee” stands out for its sporadic guitar work and for O’Hanlon’s deep vocals.

Electric Soup has started to make waves in Crow Black Chicken’s home demographic, but this is clearly just the beginning. Crow Black Chicken’s sound is one that’s both intriguing and technical, giving the group a studio/art sound that translates well on stage. Whether you’re listening them in a smoky bar or on stage at a summer festival, you’ll fall prey to Crow Black Chicken’s infectious grooves and energetic presentation.

Back in the 1990s, Bill Wyman did the unthinkable and left the Rolling Stones — the consensus greatest rock ’n’ roll band of all time — and went on to form a group of his own that equaled his previous band in terms of chops, while actually surpassing the Stones in sheer versatility. Tom McGuinness was the last original member of the classic Manfred Mann lineup to join the group, replacing bassist Dave Richmond, who had played on the group's first three singles (including the hit "5-4-3-2-1"), on December 21, 1963. He remained with the group -- although he shifted over back to his preferred instrument, the guitar, late in 1965 -- until its dissolution in 1969, but has since enjoyed 30 years of work in the music business as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader.

In 1969, when the final incarnation of Manfred Mann broke up, McGuinness joined ex-John Mayall's Bluesbreakers drummer Hughie Flint to form McGuinness Flint, which charted two major British hits, "When I'm Dead and Gone" and "Malt and Barley Blues" and, with the addition of Dennis Coulson and Dixie Dean, also cut a brilliant album of Bob Dylan covers called Lo and Behold in 1972. In the late '70s, McGuinness joined fellow Manfred Mann alumnus Paul Jones in a group called the Blues Band, which included Hughie Flint and veteran British bluesman Dave Kelly in its lineup, and which recorded a pair of albums.

After a stint in music-related television production, and authoring a book (So You Want to Be a Rock 'n Roll Star?), and more work with the Blues Band, McGuinness hooked up with Jones and his Manfred Mann successor Mike D'Abo, and fellow band alumni Mike Hugg and Mike Vickers in a group called the Manfreds. Originally assembled to help promote a collection of Manfred Mann hits, the Manfreds remained together and toured during the mid- and late '90s. ~Bruce Eder

Following on from 2016’s Luxury Hobo, Surrey born Bloater re-focusses himself and Pills is a reflection of him having a clearer head. Recorded in December 2017 with producer Adam Whalley, the band trimmed down to a power trio of Big Boy Bloater (Vocals/Guitar), Matt Cowley (Drums) and Steven Oates (Bass) for the new album and it kicks off with the rip-roaring title track Pills, an extension from the previous album and highlights the constant need for pills today but has a sinister edge.

More than ever, the band effortlessly flit through styles and pace creating an album full of depth, emotion, humour, anger and sheer fun, all the time keeping the thread that makes Big Boy Bloater & The LiMiTs such a unique proposition. From the very start Knowles earned the respect of fans, media and musicians alike, including some of his own musical heroes such as the aforementioned Peter Frampton, Joe Satrianni, and Warren Haynes. British Blues Legend, Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake, Moody Marsden Band) is another fan - “Davy Knowles continues to amaze me – he's still so young and yet he plays, writes and sings with such maturity. Since TWO TIMERS formed their unique two-piece band in 1993 they have surprised many thousands across Europe with the sheer power of their performance. Back in 2009 I described him as the best kept secret in Blues. I was trying to illustrate the fact that though he'd been playing for over 40 years and had been London's top Harmonica man for decades he still hadn't received the worldwide acclaim I thought he deserved...I'm of course talking about British harp sensation Steve "West" Weston! Now 9 years and several hundred gigs later together in the band Trickbag, I've come to know this cool gentleman, realizing he's had a long incredible career many years before I made that first naive statement.

Since he first picked up the harmonica at age 17, Steve has worked as both a sideman and leader of many bands playing both piano, harmonica & singing. As a session player he's worked on tons of recordings and in 2013 he was chosen to play harp on the hit record "Going Back Home" by former Dr. Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson and The Who lead vocalist Roger Daltry released in 2014. The album was a huge success reaching No. 3 in the UK charts. Considering all this, it's pretty incredible that what you are now holding in your hand in Steve West Weston's very first album under his own name! The album contains 11 original songs written by Weston, recorded in Finland by Tomi Leino (also playing guitar) at his Suprovox Studios with the help of rhythm section extraordinaire - Mikko Peltola (Tomi Leino Trio) on drums & Lars Näslund (Trickbag) on the double bass also co-producing it and releasing it on his Magic Production lable.

Apart from his great songwriting, Steve plays both the piano, organ and sings with great confidence & ease on this solo debut album, but it's on the harmonica that he really excels. Weston's tone is extraordinary, as is his taste and style, and within his chosen field - old style Chicgao/West Coast harp playing - he's right up there with anyone in the world today. Sonny Black is a British guitarist whose style includes bows to Earl Hooker (Through Heaven’s Eyes), Joe Pass, Grant Green (Grant’s Groove), Fred Roulette, and even the Piedmont pickers (Raggin’ The Strings). There is a very clean, restrained, almost unplugged, late night feel to Heart and Soul and many of the original songs owe as much to jazz (Bluesology) as to blues (Checkin’ In). The Dukes provide wonderfully understated support with Bob Haddrell’s piano and B-3 leading the rhythm section, George Pearson on bass and Dino Cocchia on drums. Some horns occasionally sit in, but this is essentially a guitar-led quartet moving easily and comfortably through a wide range of blues, jazz and jazz/blues originals.

It was a long term music relationship that drove those 2 Bands into London's Fantastic Gezard Studios at the end of 2010 to record this album for Voodoo Rhythm records, MAMA ROSIN Legendary Wild Cajun Combat Outfit from Geneva Switzerland are touring a lot the same goes with Hipbone Slim and his Kneetrembelrs from London England. They first met on stage at a Voodoo Rhythm Jam in France at a Blues festival, so they decided to meld both music styles together into one sound and that record was born, you will have a full blast of Mama Rosin's Raw Authentic Cajun sound together with Hipbone Slim's Raw Blues Garage Rockabilly, both drummers switched in each song in the Hipbone slim songs you got the Mama Rosin flair and in mama's songs the Hipbone Slim beat.

Backed by The Claim and recorded at Ranscombe Studios in Kent the dozen songs, four originals and eight cover versions, are gritty, raw and steeped in the blues and R&B. Some were originally written and recorded before the decade that label owner Prangnell takes his inspiration from; many of these songs were born before the sixties took shape.

As soon as the album kicks off (and kick off it does) with a Jim Riley original, ‘Running Out Of Time’, it’s obvious that the producer has paired up with the right band to capture the authentic R&B sound that he was aiming for. The songs were recorded live with minimal overdubs and it shows. The sound is far from lo-fi. In fact it’s as sharp as a brand new Stanley blade. The band is so tight, and Riley has managed to capture not only an intimate and live sound but also the obvious pleasure this group of musicians felt while recording these tracks. ‘Running Out Of Time’ thunders in, Riley’s waling harmonica and his surprisingly powerful vocals immediately grabbing the listener’s attention. This R&B stomper brings the 60's strain of this genre kicking and screaming into 2018. Just try standing still to this cracker as it’s a Friday night classic. Despite an inspired choice of covers it’s the originals and especially this opening shot that will stay in your mind and draw you back to the album; just one indication of how brilliant this band is and why an album of originals must surely be their next move.

The covers that Riley has chosen tend to be familiar songs that have already been covered by many bands and artists through the years such as, for example, ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’; for all the excellent versions of this song it’s the one by Them that most are familiar with so do we really need another take on the song? There are those who are much more qualified than this scribe who can explain why such an age-old familiar song sounds like it’s had a blood transfusion and gained a new lease of life while not really diverting too much from the version we grew up to and have loved and lived with for decades. All I know is that, as with the other covers on ‘A Very British Blues Explosion’, Riley and company have added an edge, at times both raw and polished, to these songs which lend them a contemporary sound. Sonny Boy Williamson’s oft covered ‘Help Me’ is dominated by Riley’s harmonica and again his vocals are a revelation. While the contributions from David Read on lead guitar, David Arnold on rhythm, Martin Bishop sitting on the drum stool and Stuart Ellis on bass should not be underestimated, this song really is a showcase for the talents of Riley; he really is a soul singer of no little worth and his touches of Hammond are almost as compelling as his harmonica playing.

Without Alexis Korner, there still might have been a British blues scene in the early 1960s, but chances are that it would have been very different from the one that spawned the Rolling Stones, nurtured the early talents of Eric Clapton, and made it possible for figures such as John Mayall to reach an audience. Born of mixed Turkish/Greek/Austrian descent, Korner spent the first decade of his life in France, Switzerland, and North Africa, and arrived in London in May of 1940, just in time for the German blitz, during which Korner discovered American blues. One of the most vivid memories of his teen years was listening to a record of bluesman Jimmy Yancey during a German air raid. "From then on," he recalled in an interview, "all I wanted to do was play the blues."

After the war, Korner started playing piano and then guitar, and in 1947 he tried playing electric blues, but didn't like the sound of the pick-ups that were then in use, and returned to acoustic playing. In 1949, he joined Chris Barber's Jazz Band and in 1952 he became part of the much larger Ken Colyer Jazz Group, which had merged with Barber's band. Among those whom Korner crossed paths with during this era was Cyril Davies, a guitarist and harmonica player. The two found their interests in American blues completely complementary, and in 1954 they began making the rounds of the jazz clubs as an electric blues duo. They started the London Blues and Barrelhouse Club, where, in addition to their own performances, Korner and Davies brought visiting American bluesmen to listen and play. Very soon they were attracting blues enthusiasts from all over England.

Korner and Davies made their first record in 1957, and in early 1962, they formed Blues Incorporated, a "supergroup" (for its time) consisting of the best players on the early-'60s British blues scene. Korner (guitar, vocals), Davies (harmonica, vocals), Ken Scott (piano), and Dick Heckstall-Smith (saxophone) formed the core, with a revolving membership featuring Charlie Watts or Graham Burbridge on drums, Spike Heatley or Jack Bruce on bass, and a rotating coterie of guest vocalists including Long John Baldry, Ronnie Jones, and Art Wood (older brother of Ron Wood). Most London jazz clubs were closed to them, so in March of 1962 they opened their own club, which quickly began attracting large crowds of young enthusiasts, among them Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Brian Jones, all of whom participated at some point with the group's performances; others included Ian Stewart, Steve Marriott, Paul Jones, and Manfred Mann. In May of 1962, Blues Incorporated was invited to a regular residency at London's Marquee Club, where the crowds grew even bigger and more enthusiastic. The Blues Band - 2 albums: Stepping Out / Thank You Brother Ray

England's the Blues Band is led by ex-Manfred Mann vocalist Paul Jones and guitarist/vocalist Dave Kelly, who, before forming the group in 1979, had been a member of the John Dummer Blues Band and issued several solo recordings on his own (Kelly had also received praise for his playing by such blues legends as Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker). After hooking up with friend/bassist Gary Fletcher, the seeds for the Blues Band were sown, resulting in countless albums (including such titles as 1980's Official Bootleg Album and Ready, 1981's Itchy Feet, 1982's Brand Loyalty which featured new member ex-Family drummer Rob Townsend, 1983's Bye Bye Blues, 1986's These Kind of Blues, 1989's Back for More, 1991's Fat City, 1993's Homage, and 1995's Wire Less, among others). In addition, Kelly formed the Dave Kelly Band in the mid-'80s (issuing four albums), penned music for commercials and such projects as BBC TV's King of the Ghetto and The Comic Strip Presents Strike!, has been voted Best Acoustic Artist by BBC polls throughout the '90s, and is an honorary patron of the London Guitar College with Hank Marvin. ~Greg Prato

This power trio from the U.K. plays what was once called hard rock. Aside from the vocals it verges on heavy metal. It’s all about speed freak guitar and power chords. The rough vocals are passable and fit the genre, but the lyrics are lame and/or dumb. The lyrics are secondary as the songs are a vehicle for blazing guitars. The rhythm section is tight and is there at every turn. Actually the three instrumentals included here are quite melodic and riveting. This CD would of worked better sans vocals. If you are a fan of Black Sabbath or Spinal Tap you will feel right at home.

The formula is basically the same throughout with heavy and fast paced guitar soloing, the only songs having a more enjoyable structure tend to be the instrumentals. Just to give you an insight into the lyrical craft at play here, the following are the complete lyrics to “Hot Valves” repeated over and over-“I don’t want nobody to git me nothing, open up the door let me get it myself”.

Now for the good news. On the first of the instrumental tunes “Green Lights” nicely melodic guitar is played over strummed acoustic guitar and un-credited organ, no drums on this one. These songs are where Jamie’s guitar skills are shone in their best light. “The Harlot’s Ghost” builds in much the same way, then the rhythm section kicks in and it takes off to string bending nirvana with strong melodies. The title track is all electric power trio. It’s power will dust out your speakers for sure. ~Greg "Bluesdog" Szalony
