From Norway comes a very pleasant blues surprise in the form of this abum by Ronny Aagren & His Blues Gumbo. Although he will be regarded as a new talent for many, Aagren is no newcomer to blues. At the end of the eighties he played in The Basement Band and then again in the bands Larsens Last Chance, The Harmophonics, Get Rhythm and Solid Comfort.
The experience he has gained in these bands can be heard on his new album with his Blues Gumbo (Alexander Andre Johnson on piano and organ, Roar Paulsberg on bass and Ole-Christian Rydland on drums). Together they produce a sound on this album that combines the sounds of Duke Robillard from his early years with influences from soul music and from the musical centipede Ry Cooder.
The guitar sound of Ronny is hard, fierce and piercing and he is very raw on the slide guitar.

The album opens with the lazy swinging shuffle Trying To Get Close To You. Here you can already see that Ronny as a singer has the necessary soul. He is soldering here in a hard piercing way. Walking With The Devil is a sultry shuffle in which some New Orleans influences are. The sound of Robert Cray is also close. The pace is rising in the shuffle I Do not Care. An irresistible rocking song with jazzy piano. In the soul blues ballad There Is No Hope, the soul sound of the 60s is taken back, resulting in a delicious sharpener. Ronny lets his slide guitar roar raw in the pumping blues rocker I Love That Lady. The languid funky soul blues Silence is carried by Ronny's raw guitar riffs. The mid-tempo boogie After Midnight (no cover of the Eric Clapton song!) Has something Black Crowes-like. A funky sound with splitting hard guitar work by Ronny.
In the rousing rocker A Question Of Time, Ronny and his men mix the sound of Rockpile and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. A song with which every hall can be played flat!
Precious Lord is, it can not be otherwise with such a title, a gospel-like soulblues ballad with cutting Ry Cooder-like slide guitar. After the drum band has marched in, the New Orleans blues song Bring Me Home starts again with the cutting slide in the foreground.
The album ends with the slowblues Sometimes. A song with a huge amount of soul in which Ronny displays a piece of his skills on the guitar.

Ronny Aagren & His Blues Gumbo deliver with this album a great musical melting pot (gumbo) that many blues enthusiasts will have fun with. ~Peter Marinus (translated from dutch)

From the humid Mississippi delta to New Orleans, gumbo is serious business. Gumbo is "an improvisational thing". The very name conjures up a rich array of ingredients coming together in a single pot, melting into something rich and delicious.

Like the Gumbo dish, this band is a composition of elements to your own taste and palate. With a hint of the Mississippi Delta, New Orleans, Texas and Lillestrøm to get the right Gumbo flavor. The band was put together in March 2016. The music style is a mix within the genres of the Blues. As a songwriter and composer, most of the music is written and composed by Ronny Aagren. After almost 30 years in the music business, Ronny has developed a distinctive music style and a way of playing guitar that clearly characterizes him.

Ronny started playing guitar in bands in his early teens. He started the band Basement Band in the late 80's. He played in Larsens Last Chance for a couple of years in the 90's, and with Kim Therkildsen for many years in The Harmophones and Get Rhythm. He has also been a part of Solid Comfort for 15 years, and joined Little Andrew for a couple of years where they got nominated for best Blues record at Spellemannsprisen in 2010.
