In his early years in Mississippi, blues and gospel were his defining musical influences. It was during this period that he heard blues greats like Sonny Boy Williamson II, Robert Nighthawk, and Muddy Waters. His mother gave him his first guitar, and his cousin taught him to play it. Johnson came to Chicago in the mid-1950s at a time when the West Side guitar style of Magic Sam and Otis Rush was developing. It was there that he chose the blues. During the 1960s, he played in Magic Sam's band and performed with various blues greats such as Sunnyland Slim, Bobby Rush, Little Addison, Willie Kent, and Jimmy Dawkins. From 1972 to 1980, he was a member of Muddy Waters' band, which also helped him achieve success. His first solo album, Luther's Blues, was also released during one of his tours with Waters. In 1980, he left Waters' band and formed his own band, the Magic Rockers.[4] He also left Chicago and settled near Boston, but remained true to the West Side style, even as he shifted his repertoire towards jump blues. Since 1980, he has been the frontman of The Magic Rockers, recording for Telarc, Alligator Records, and Bullseye Blues, and undertaking extensive tours.

The swedish band The Kokomo Kings has gained a reputation of playing an uncompromising, no-nonsence brew on a variety of low-down rocking roots-music, grounded deep in the blues. They have been described as being "more rock'n'roll than rock'n'roll" and having "energy level 11". They got together in the spring of 2012, aiming to play nothing but primitive, groovy Saturday-night music made for dancing.

In October 2013 they released the full length album "Artificial Natural" that received great rewievs. Many blues and rock'n'roll fans claimed that it was the first time for many years that they listened to a blues album from the first song to the last, and just loved every second of it. In the spring of 2017 the german label Rhythm Bomb Records released their second album "Too Good to Stay Away From".

The Ameripolitan Music Awards in Memphis nominated the Kokomo Kings to best rockabilly band 2018, and the band won the "Band of the Year 2018" and the "Entertainers of the Year 2021" award from The Blues Lounge Radio Show in the U.K. In 2022 they won both the "Entertainers of the Year" and "Artist of the Year" from The Blues Lounge Radio Awards.

In the summer of 2019 Rhythm Bomb Records released their third album "Fighting Fire with Gasoline", and in 2021 their fourth album "A Drive-By Love Affair". Since the start, they've performed at clubs and festivals in Sweden, Denmark, United Kingdom, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Norway, France, Austria, Switzerland, Estonia, The Czech Republic and Spain.

Since 1976 Nick Trill and the Thrillseekers have been swinging the blues in the South Florida area.

Nick Trill got bit by the blues bug in junior high school, when a buddy dropped off a stack of vinyl discs. “It was shocking,” he said. “I never heard music like that before.” As a kid in the ’burbs of New York City, songs by Paul Butterfield and John Mayall shook Trill’s world.

Those early influences led to him penning his own tunes and hitting stages as frontman for Nick Trill and the Thril-seekers. The band’s been bouncing a blend of Chicago-style blues and West Coast swing off the walls at clubs around South Florida since the mid-’90s.

The current lineup includes Trill on harmonica and vocals, backed by guitarist Tommy, bassist Steve and drummer Lil’ Mel Washington. The guys, who hail from Broward and Palm Beach counties, have good chemistry, Trill said. Trill’s songs mix up-tempo, dance-friendly beats with lyrics put together from bits and pieces of his life.

He plays original tunes and classic covers by John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, RL Burnside and the Chicago and West Coast harp legends. This hard working, rising young star is a force to be reckoned with and a definite “must see”.

Born and raised on the Eastside of Milwaukee, Al began his career busking on street corners for pocket change until a chance encounter with local blues artist Reverend Raven catapulted him into local stardom. Tutored by legendary harmonica players Jim Liban and Madison Slim, Big Al is considered one of the best harmonica players in Wisconsin. He recently won a WAMI Award for Harmonica Player Of The Year.

When not performing with his own band, you can see Al with Chicago and Wisconsin Blues Hall Of Famer Paul Filipowicz, Delmark recording artist Dave Weld, Wolf recording artist Brenda Taylor and a host of others. Jon Cleary - The Bywater Sessions

9. Pickle For A Tickle (3:28)
10. Unnecessarily Mercenary (4:02)

After thirty-five years of being at the forefront of the ever-evolving musical landscape of New Orleans, Grammy Award winner Jon Cleary decided to bring that sound back home, both figuratively and literally. He assembled his Absolute Monster Gentlemen (his acclaimed all-star big band) in his home studio in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, drew up a setlist of some of his most beloved songs - and some new favorites - and rolled tape."We set out to capture that sound in the old-fashioned way: everybody in the room, playing together," Cleary explains.

The result is The Bywater Sessions, a musical tour-de-force that showcases the grit, funk and joy that's packed concert halls from New Orleans to Tokyo and beyond. Co-produced by Cleary and John Porter (Roxy Music, The Smiths, Taj Mahal), it's a stunning collection of performances that affirms Cleary's place in the New Orleans musical vanguard."There's a lot to be said for the 'lean and mean' sound of a piano trio, stripped down to basics, simple and direct," Cleary says. "But recently, I've been experimenting with different combinations; adding horns, guitar, percussion and even another keyboard player. This expanded line-up has allowed the arrangements to blossom in new directions."

As for the musicians, it's the best of the best. Long time Monster Gentlemen Cornell Williams and A.J. Hall anchor the band on bass and drums, respectively. They are joined by Nigel Hall (Lettuce) on Hammond organ, Pedro Segundo (Ronnie Scott's All Stars) on percussion, Xavier Lynn (MonoNeon, Ledisi) on guitar, and an all-star horn section of Aaron Narcisse (Delfeayo Marsalis & the Uptown Jazz Orchestra), Charlie Halloran (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Preservation Hall All Stars) and Jason Mingledorff (Galactic).

"Sophisticated, nasty, good-time, low-down funk is the folk music of New Orleans," Cleary says. "Everyone playing on this recording is a New Orleanian by birth or by choice, having learned their craft at the feet of the masters who in turn were taught by the old lions in their day - it's a tradition stretching back over two hundred years. The roots go deep, but each generation, growing up with street parades and second-lines, absorbs the old and introduces the new, gently coaxing the essential essence into and out of each succeeding decade." /Blues Music Store

L.A. Blues Alliance - What A Life

15. Who's Been Talking (4:08)

Mike Post is best known for composing the theme songs for such hit TV shows as Law & Order, Rockford Files and Hill Street Blues. So, it may come as a surprise that another side of his musical passion is the blues! The initial disc by Post assembled L.A. Blues Alliance to record What a Life live in the studio; they did it with only a few takes, if that, allotted for each track and a democratic vibe in which each musician brought in both originals and blues favorites to the sessions.

Along with production duties, Post took it upon himself to assemble a crack band that consists of guitarists W.G. Snuffy Walden, Keb' Mo' and Sonny Landreth, vocalist Amy Keys, bassist Bob Glaub, keyboardists David Morgan and Mike Finnigan, drummer John Robinson, and Stan Behrens switching between harmonica and tenor sax. Of the 15 tracks, eight are cover versions. Far too often on hastily assembled recordings of this nature, "cover versions" can be translated to mean generic or geriatric; but, upon first hearing Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line," reinterpreted as a gutbucket blues, it becomes clear that this is definitely not a paint-by-numbers affair.

The musicians don't get hung up on one specific style of blues; they cover a lot of ground, paying homage along the way to Howlin' Wolf "Who's Been Talkin,'" Son House "Death Letter," Big Joe Turner "T.V. Mama," Skip James "Illinois Blues," Clyde McPhatter "Money Honey," Smokey Robinson "Shop Around," and Stevie Wonder "Maybe Your Baby." L.A. Blues Alliance is a rewarding musical endeavor that has the potential to go beyond a one shot dream project. /Al Campbell, AllMusic

A rhythm and blues revivalist from an early age, pianist Mike Sanchez had an early affection for American rockabilly. Starting on the piano at the age ten, Sanchez discovered the works of Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis and used that manic playing style as his inspiration. Once a teenager, he began to play guitar and eventually started his first rockabilly combo in the late 70's. Introduced to like-minded musician Andy Sylvester by fellow roots rock enthusiast Robert Plant, the two struck up an instant friendship and began working as the Big Town Playboys soon after.

Popular with many of the blues rock legends of the 80's, the experience in the Playboys introduced Sanchez to heroes such as Eric Clapton and Mick Fleetwood through time. These friendships led to collaborations, and soon Sanchez began appearing on albums from artists like Jeff Beck and Bill Wyman. Eventually realizing he had enough material to strike out on his own, the Playboys broke up and Sanchez began to release solo albums. Wyman invited Sanchez to claim a spot in his popular Rhythm Kings, and Sanchez gladly accepted as he started his new endeavors with his typical gusto. /Biography by Bradley Torreano, AllMusic

That’s why his discography to date – though it includes a number of solo albums – also shows releases with Honeytribe (with whom he debuted in 2006) and southern rock supergroup Royal Southern Brotherhood as well as with the Allman Betts Band. The resumé is a work in progress, yet one that is already worthy of the musical legacy handed down to him by his late father Gregg Allman of the legendary Allman Brothers Band.

In recent years, the hard-working singer, guitarist and songwriter has focused his attention on the Devon Allman Project, touring relentlessly and spreading groovy, feel-good vibes on the 2024 release entitled Miami Moon. The band’s newest album Blues Summit is a completely different animal. Once again, it’s a decidedly collaborative effort that sees Allman’s core band augmented by big-time players like Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Larry McCray, Jimmy Hall and Robert Randolph. Yet this time around, Allman displays an uncanny willingness to share the spotlight. He does more than feature his guests on this session. On roughly half of the album’s ten tracks, he lets them take center stage. And since most of his guests are big-time blues players, we wind up with one of the bluesiest albums of Allman’s career. As the title says: it’s a Blues Summit.

One of the stars of this musical gathering is Jimmy Hall, who some may know as lead singer and harmonica player of southern-rock group Wet Willie or for his collaborations with Jeff Beck. Hall puts his stamp on the record almost immediately, singing and blowing up a storm on its de facto theme song, “Blues Is A Feelin’.” The track is a big, brawny, propulsively rhythmic celebration delivered by eight musicians who share an obvious passion for the blues. Hall handles vocal duties again on the gospel-tinged “Peace To The World” (with Robert Randolph adding his trademark pedal steel guitar) and on a loose and spirited, hand-clapping, foot-stomping version of the Willie Dixon classic “Wang Dang Doodle.”

On “Hands And Knees,” Arkansas-born Larry McCray takes his turn at the mic and on lead guitar, his chiming licks and smooth tone showing an obvious debt to B.B. King. “Getting’ Greasy With It” is another McCray composition served up well by Allman and his cohorts. The funky quasi-instrumental is smothered in horns and has Memphis written all over it – no surprise since it features the celebrated Memphis Horns, guests on three songs in all. Though Blues Summit was recorded at the Sawhorse Studio in St. Louis, it often feels like Memphis, with “Real Love” being a further example; this slow and sultry soul ballad written by Allman showcases New Orleans singer Sierra Green on vocals.

Jacob & The Jackals is a good blues band to get acquainted with. Both of their previous releases have been solid, swinging CDs, with Jakob Steinwall's characteristic guitar as a trademark. In the past, their records have weaved their way through the southerna states of USA, but “Breaking The Spell" takes the trip to New Orleans on occasion. (Not Dr. John, but rather swinging New Orleans R&B as it was played in the 50s.)

“Breaking The Spell” is an honest slice of blues that promises a full party and is delivered under a full moon. Steinwall is a hard-working guitarist who knows his music, and he is a good singer as well. This CD features great authority and it’s ready to rock.

9. Out For A Rip (3:15)
10. Crooks, Thieves, And Liars (3:43)

The road-tested blues duo Long Tall Deb & Colin John return with Light It Up. Known for their globe-spanning musical journey and genre-blending approach, the pair deliver a set that leans deep into blues-rock muscle and soul. Long Tall Deb’s commanding vocals meet Colin John’s raw, shape-shifting guitar work across a slate of originals, along with two sharp reinventions: Willie Dixon’s “Spoonful” and the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams,” reimagined with a Texas blues shuffle. The album was co-produced and co-written with Chris Butler (The Waitresses), who also handles drums and bass on several tracks. Rounding out the lineup are guest turns from Canadian harmonica ace Steve Marriner, drummer Jason Edwards, guitarist Alastair Greene, French bluesman Pascal Fouquet, and backup vocalist Jennifer Milligan.

As the title track so clearly professes, Long Tall Deb and Colin John are ready, willing and able to “start a new kind of fire.” They strike a match on the song and let it burn. With a blues pulse and a video to match, the song calls out the familiar culprits: misinformation, institutional greed, and the long shadow of putting profit over people. These may sound like modern ailments, but the blues has always named them out loud. Amen. /Lauren Leadingham, American Blues Scene

Nicholas Robert Schnebelen (born September 30, 1978) is an award-winning American blues-rock musician hailing from Kansas City, Missouri. Known for his fiery guitar work and deep, soulful connection to the blues, Nick has built a reputation as a powerhouse performer, both as a solo artist and as a founding member of the internationally acclaimed band Trampled Under Foot.

Nick’s musical journey began in a household steeped in the blues. His father played in a blues band, and his grandmother was a jazz singer who performed with the legendary Count Basie. Growing up in such a rich musical environment, it was only natural that Nick would develop his own voice in the blues world. He studied classical music and jazz at Kansas City’s Paseo Academy before hitting the road and immersing himself in the life of a working musician.

In 2000, Nick, along with his siblings Danielle and Kris Schnebelen, formed Trampled Under Foot, a band that would go on to make history. The trio won the 2008 International Blues Challenge, with Nick earning the prestigious Albert King Award for Best Guitarist. Their 2013 album Badlands soared to the top of the Billboard Blues Albums Chart, later winning Contemporary Blues Album of the Year at the 2014 Blues Music Awards. The band’s success cemented Nick’s status as a rising force in the blues scene.

After Trampled Under Foot disbanded in 2015, Nick embarked on a solo career, releasing two live albums in 2016: Live at Knuckleheads, Vol. 1 and Live in Kansas City. His first studio album, Crazy All By Myself (2019), produced by Tony Braunagel, showcased his songwriting alongside collaborations with Gary Nicholson, Jeff Paris, and Dave Duncan. Featuring an all-star lineup, including harmonica virtuoso Jason Ricci, guitarist Davy Knowles, and pianist Mike Finnigan, the album debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard Blues Chart and further established Nick as a force to be reckoned with.

Nick’s signature style is a fusion of old-school and contemporary blues, with echoes of legends like Freddie King and Buddy Guy. His electrifying live performances have taken him across North America and Europe, playing major festivals, the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, and opening for icons like George Thorogood. His relentless touring schedule and raw, passionate performances continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

In 2023, Nick released his latest studio album, What Key Is Trouble In?, a hard-hitting blues-rock record that earned him the cover feature of Making a Scene magazine. The album reflects his evolution as an artist, blending blistering guitar work with deeply personal storytelling.

With a career built on authenticity, relentless dedication, and a deep love for the blues, Nick Schnebelen continues to push the genre forward while honoring its rich history. Whether on stage or in the studio, he delivers music that is raw, real, and unmistakably his own.

Luther 'Guitar Junior' Johnson - Live At The Rynborn

Album: Live At The Rynborn
Size: 111,9 MB

11. Rynborn Boogie (5:45)

Live at the Rynborn was recorded with Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson's regular New England working band, blowing the roof off the hotel he was living at in 1995. Released on a dime sized local label, it kicked enough noise to be picked for national release by M.C. Records in 1999. The new reissue still reflects the same crude editing between songs in a sloppy attempt to give the illusion of that "these all came from the same set" nonsense that plagued the original, and the back to back to back to back pile-up of slow blues at the end does hamper the momentum a bit. But it's Luther Johnson, doing what he (and Magic Slim) do best: rocking a crowd down to the bricks while keeping the real blues alive. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

Personnel: Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson (guitar, vocals); Skip Philbrick (guitar); Andy Karick (bass); K.D. Bell (drums); Otis Doncaster (harmonica); Eric "Two Scoops" Moore (keyboards); Lynwood Cooke (saxophone).

10. You Can Love Yourself (2:31)

Winner of two Acoustic Artist of the Year UK Blues Awards, Oli Mac now brings us a second helping of his alter ego’s acoustic oeuvre following 2024’s Call Me Mississippi lo-key release. Slim Pickin’ is a significant progression. Reflecting the experience gained since the last album, on tour and in writing, the new acoustic album adds more instrumentation and production to deliver a wholly more comprehensive sound.

Mac is ably assisted as ever by his right hand band mate Phil Dearing, in the producers chair and also on second guitar and keyboards. The duo are joined by Brent Cundall on bass. Of Nashville origin, Cundall is a very experienced session musician on whose CV is printed ‘bassist and percussionist at Dollywood’ – not many have that. Mac himself weighs in with more of his tasty guitar pickin’ and licks, plus piano, and that extraordinarily soulful and gospel tinged vocal.

Songs include excellent re-workings of live staples "Trouble Doin’ the Right Thing", "Strange Things Happening Every Day", and "Bad Attitude" – a recently Oli Mac penned song born of his times in Memphis over the last year. The album title track is also a new Mac song and it’s more than the title suggests i.e. a full acoustic band sound, and a song about a tired relationship.

This album sees Mac in slightly reflective mood too. His own songs "I’m Sorry" and "Sad Songs" represent a significant development in writing style, moving beyond the strictures of 12 bar blues towards a broader musical sophistication. Once again, born of his time in Memphis under the mentorship of The Reverend Charles Hodges and Boo Mitchell, the influence of Al Green is unmistakable.

With Get Your Back Into It!, Chicago native, guitarist and vocalist Nick Moss and New Jersey native, harmonica player and vocalist Dennis Gruenling – together with Rodrigo Mantovani on bass, Taylor Streiff on keyboards and Pierce Downer on drums – deliver a deeply rooted, timeless blue collar blues album. According to Moss, “We are a rare breed as far as how authentic we like to keep the music." That's not a surprise to longtime fans, as Moss proudly represents the city of Chicago as one of the few bluesmen working today to have learned his craft firsthand directly from many of the genre’s original creators.

Get Your Back Into It! was produced by Moss and Mantovani and contains fourteen original songs -- twelve by Moss and two by Gruenling. Guests include saxophonist “Sax” Gordon Beadle and organist “Brother” John Kattke. The album is inspired by the electrifying blues sounds of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, and is performed with taste, restraint, sly humor and pure joy. In addition to the expertly crafted lyrics, the album features three wild instrumentals that simply dare you to stay seated. “We're not reinventing the wheel," says Moss of the songs and performances on the new album, "but we like to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, and I feel like we accomplished that.”

Moss first made a name for himself playing bass for bluesman Jimmy “Fast Fingers” Dawkins. Dawkins encouraged Nick to unleash his fire and passion. From there, Moss was chosen by Willie “Big Eyes” Smith to join his Legendary Blues Band, but Smith insisted Moss switch to guitar. Blues icon Jimmy Rogers (whose best known songs included "Walking By Myself" and "Ludella") hired Moss as his touring guitarist, mentoring him on the blues lifestyle along the way. Today, Moss’ blistering fretwork, impassioned, soul-charged vocals and memorable original songs place him in a league of his own.

Dennis Gruenling, Moss’ friend of over 20 years, is considered among today’s most innovative and creative blues harmonica players. His high-energy, full-throttle reed work has earned him comparisons to many of the greats, including the late James Cotton. A self-taught player and a natural entertainer with seven solo albums and numerous guest appearances to his credit, Gruenling’s giant, fat-toned harp work, raw-boned singing and untamed energy are a perfect foil for Moss’ inspired guitar playing and straight-from-the-shoulder blues vocals. Vintage Guitar says, “Gruenling’s harp, along with the Midwestern intensity of Moss’ blues guitar, is pure ecstasy.”

Lucky Guy! finished in the Top 10 on the Living Blues Radio Chart’s Top 50 Albums of 2019. Internationally, the album peaked on blues charts at #1 in Australia, #3 in France and #7 in the UK. Songs from Lucky Guy! were also prominently featured on BBC2 in Britain and CBC in Canada. The title track became one of the most played songs on SiriusXM’s Bluesville.

Now, with Get Your Back Into It! and upcoming North American and European tours in the works, The Nick Moss Band Featuring Dennis Gruenling will bring their brash, exciting blues to old fans and new. Performing at clubs, concert halls and on festival stages across the country and around the world, the band ignites an irresistible, musical firestorm onstage. “When we get together, the music takes over,” says Moss. “We can’t hold back, and the energy just comes pouring out. We get carried away and the audience gets carried away with us.”

The blues is communication. Between people, through history. The blues has travelled a long way from the cotton fields to the streets of the cities. It has developed and stayed the same. The mystery tone of Robert Johnson is just as thrilling as the sound of Ronnie Earl's guitar.

The sound and the love of the music are the most important, together with an audience that can feel the pulse of the music. The Norwegian trio, The Buzz Brothers, has on this album made their own contribution to the never ending story of the blues. /Knut Ormhaug

Vocalist Tommy Moberg established Trickbag in 1994, setting the stage for a now 31-year run as one of the best “live” and studio outfits in Europe. Founded in Sweden, this Scandinavian group is equally adept at bringing the goods in a variety of styles including blues, old-time rock-n-roll, roots music, soul, timeless Americana, and swing. To say that the band creates a pandemonium wherever they play is a gross understatement. The same seems to also be the case with their recorded output.

Trickbag’s status as a powerhouse performing unit has resulted in them ascending to the summit of the Scandinavian blues landscape. One just gets the feeling that no matter what this band sets its mind upon, it is always strongly focused on the ultimate celebration to be experienced. Trickbag is also well-regarded for its sterling reputation as one of the premier backing bands around, having provided stellar support for, and recording music with, some of the biggest names in the blues-related fields including harmonica giant James Harman, guitar titan Junior Watson, guitar phenom Kid Ramos, soulful vocalist John Németh, Chicago piano colossus Barrelhouse Chuck, and superb guitarist Rusty Zinn, among many others.

Here indeed we find the band’s celebration of “30 years of excellence” as the “full-service blues band since 1994.” And undeniably, these 20 cuts (with two previously unreleased selections) wholly satisfy and firmly highlight why Trickbag’s brand of music is absolutely infectious. Truly, this isn’t a “best of” assemblage - rather, it is a document of secreted treasures and seasoned jewels from the band’s first eight collections to-date through 2024.

The album includes 10 outstanding tracks. It includes the first song she ever wrote when she began singing, sultry blues Miss Frigidaire, which has been recorded here for the very first time.

Aisha & the Rajahs wanted to record an album that could easily be reproduced in a live environment. With previous recordings Aishaddiction and The Magnificent Twelve being rather more ambitious projects with multiple styles and a range of incredible musical and vocal guests, they felt that they wanted this collection to be something fundamental but real where the musicianship, songs and emotion sit centre stage and can be experienced at any gig.

GRAMMY-award winning blues icon Koko Taylor was a force of nature. The legendary Queen of the Blues was one of the genre’s best-selling and most recognizable artists. With her huge, gritty voice and the backing of her powerhouse band, The Blues Machine, she delivered tough Chicago blues over a 45-year career, ending with her death in 2009. For people all over the world, her music IS the blues as much as BB King’s or Buddy Guy’s. Crown Jewels is the first new Koko Taylor vinyl to be released in 35 years, and as the title makes clear, it’s packed with over 50 minutes of the finest performances from her celebrated Alligator years.

These are songs blues fans know and love by heart, from “Wang Dang Doodle” to “Hey Bartender” to “Let The Good Times Roll.” It’s gritty, unvarnished, old-school blues and proud of it, every track infused with Koko’s ageless energy and passion. In a career defined by evolution, Joe Bonamassa is ready to turn the page once again. The blues-rock virtuoso’s latest release Breakthrough is his most adventurous and genre-blending studio album to date.

Crafted across multiple continents and infused with a world’s worth of inspiration, Breakthrough marks a bold new chapter for Bonamassa - one that leans on fiery solos, emotionally rich storytelling, groove-driven arrangements, and stylistic exploration. Produced by longtime creative partner Kevin Shirley (Iron Maiden, Black Crowes, Journey), the album was shaped by sessions in Greece, Egypt, Nashville, and Los Angeles, resulting in a vibrant sonic tapestry that shifts effortlessly from funky blues and Texas swing to acoustic ballads and swaggering hard rock.

“I think this album marks a shift in the styling of Joe Bonamassa’s recording output,” says Shirley. “While there are plenty of guitar solos on this record, his emphasis has been on songs primarily. Each time Joe undertakes a new recording project, he seems to access a different part of his vast library of music genre from the jukebox-in-his-head. This album is a round-the-world musical trip - from Little Feat funkiness to Texas swing, from hard rock power to acoustic singer-songwriter-style songs.”

With over 50 albums, 28 No. 1 Billboard Blues albums, and a lifelong commitment to evolving the genre, Bonamassa shows no signs of slowing down. Whether headlining iconic venues, mentoring rising artists through Journeyman Records, or supporting music education via his Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Bonamassa continues to shape the future of blues-rock with every note. /Darryl Sterdan, Tinnitist

Sugar Blue - Cross Roads

Album: Cross Roads

Time: 33:05
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1979

Art: Front, back

1. Pontiac (3:20)
2. Begging The Girl To Go (6:17)
3. Dark And Hungry (6:34)
4. Shed No Tears (3:08)
5. War Zone (4:37)
6. My Baby Caught The Train (6:51)
7. Another Man Done Gone (2:14)

Inarguably the best-known recorded performances by Grammy-winning harmonicist Sugar Blue are his two appearances on the Rolling Stones' Some Girls in 1977 - in particular on the hit "Miss You." (Mick Jagger found him busking on a Paris street.) That said, Blue has become a superstar and first-call sideman who has worked with everyone from Paul Horn, Hiram Bullock, Stan Getz, Prince, and Bob Dylan to Willie Dixon, Son Seals, Johnny Shines, and Shemekia Copeland, to name a few.

He is among the foremost electric harpists of the modern era. Given his proficiency as an improviser and his high-register runs, circular breathing, and electronic effects, Sugar Blue is regarded by music journalists as "the Jimi Hendrix of the harmonica" and a "harp pyrotechnician." Though he records infrequently as a leader, his 1979 debut Crossroads and 1994's In Your Eyes, are regarded as essential modern electric blues offerings. His 2012 live date, Raw Sugar from Beeble Music, is among the first harmonica blues "essentials" of the 21st century. In 2016, Blue issued the charting Blue Voyage.

Sugar Blue was born James Whiting in New York City in 1950. The son of a singer/dancer who regularly performed at the legendary Apollo Theater, he was given his first harmonica at the age of ten, and by his mid-teens had already performed in the company of Muddy Waters; in the early '70s he made his first recordings, sitting in on sessions by the likes of Johnny Shines and Louisiana Red. Sugar Blue relocated to Paris in 1976, where he was introduced to the Rolling Stones; he went on to play on the group's LPs Some Girls, Emotional Rescue, and Tattoo You, lending his skills to such hits as "Miss You."

He also played on jazz dates for Stan Getz and Paul Horn, and in 1979 cut the solo efforts Crossroads and From Paris to Chicago in 1982. In 1985, Blue won a Grammy Award for his participation on the Atlantic compilation Blues Explosion. Upon returning to the U.S. in the mid-'80s, Sugar Blue settled in Chicago, and after signing to Alligator, he cut Blue Blazes in 1994, followed a year later by In Your Eyes. Over the coming years he continued to perform and tour, though it would be 12 years before his next album, 2007's Code Blue, was released. Threshold appeared in 2010, followed two years later by the live album Raw Sugar.

2016 would prove to be a banner year for the veteran bluesman, with the release of a new studio album called Voyage, a world tour, and an appearance in the documentary film Sidemen, A Long Road to Glory. Restlessness is a chronic state for Blue, who continually seeks new sounds and studios to record in. For 2019's Colors, he wrote and recorded on four continents, U.S. (Chicago), China (Beijing), Europe (Italy), and Africa (South Africa). /Biography by Jason Ankeny, AllMusic

Robben Ford - Soul On Ten

Album: Soul On Ten

Time: 68:03
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2009
Styles: Blues/Jazz/Rock mix

1. Supernatural (7:49)
2. Indianola (5:16)
3. There'll Never Be Another You (8:26)
4. Spoonful (6:08)
5. Nothin' To Nobody (11:09)
6. Please Set A Date/You Don't Have To Go (5:50)
7. Earthquake (7:44)
8. How Deep In The Blues (Do You Want To Go) (6:44)
9. Don't Worry 'Bout Me (4:18)
10. Thoughtless (4:35)

Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, and first live CD in about a decade (although there have been some concert DVDs during that time), Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the somewhat narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences.

He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, jumping into the instrumental "Indianola." This is where Ford seamlessly combines rock, blues, jazz, and surf into a five-minute tour de force that leads one to believe that a vocal-free show might display his superb guitar talents better than one where he sings. Still, he acquits himself admirably in front of the microphone to pull together "Nothin' to Nobody." That selection from Supernatural is extended to twice its original playing time with an 11-minute version that finds its groove as Ford's guitar spars with Neal Evans' husky B-3 organ and Travis Carlton's (son of Larry) bass solo.

Ford is no Howlin' Wolf, or even Jack Bruce, but he tears into "Spoonful" with enough guitar guts to make it easy to ignore his well-meaning if slightly listless vocals and concentrate on the combo's taut playing, led by Ford's tensile, stinging solo. The combination of Elmore James' "Please Set a Date" with Jimmy Reed's "You Don't Have to Go" has Ford diving into traditional Chicago blues, something he does not typically do. Unfortunately, "Earthquake," a new composition in the set (as opposed to two other fresh songs tacked on as studio versions) suffers from the same weak writing that mars much of Ford's work, although his Steely Dan-inspired solo rescues it.

The concert portion ends with a rugged, funky "How Deep in the Blues (Do You Want to Go)," a highlight from his previous album Truth performed here with amped up energy. The two original tunes that close out this project are pleasant but superfluous and probably should have been saved for his next studio outing while adding more live performances to this one. Since it clocks in at only 68 minutes, there is room for more material recorded at the same shows. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic
