b. Robert L. Jones, 12 October 1924, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, d. 2 April 1996. At the age of five Jones, aka Guitar Gabriel, moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with his bluesman father and began playing guitar when eight years old, meeting many of the area’s leading blues artists, including Rev. Gary Davis and Blind Boy Fuller, both of whom had a great influence on his own music. He left home at the age of 16 and travelled throughout the country, meeting Lightnin’ Hopkins, who also left his mark on Jones’ music. In 1970 he recorded in Pittsburgh for Gemini, and the resulting album and single were acclaimed for their raw blues passion. However, Jones became disillusioned at the lack of financial reward and returned to Winston-Salem in the mid-70s, assuming the name Guitar Gabriel. He was rediscovered and recorded again in 1991, under the supervision of Tim Duffy.
