Guitarists Steve Arvey and Jon McDonald founded West Side Heat in 1982, along with drummer Marvin Jackson, who was then playing in the Albert Collins Band. The name was inspired by their love of the Westside Chicago Sound of Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Eddie C. Campbell, and Jimmy Dawkins. The lineup was soon completed by Lovie Lee, the last pianist of the Muddy Waters Band. West Side Heat played the clubs of Chicago and Milwaukee, and their first album, "Crazy Mixed Up World", was released in 1985. At that time, the drums were handled by Tony Mangiullo, a former member of the Jimmy Rogers Band whose mother had married Homesick James. Equally adept at singing and playing guitar and harmonica, Mark Hoekstra would later join the group.
West Side Heat split up in 1991, but their sound from that era can be heard on Steve Arvey's album, "Best from the Vault". Steve then devoted himself to acoustic blues, both solo and with Kraig Kenning. Probably nostalgic for West Side Heat, Steve recently reformed the band and hit the road again. In February 2003, he recorded his live set at the "Blues on Grand" festival in Des Moines, Iowa. Michael Wagner is on bass, Pete Kruse on drums, Steve Arvey handles vocals and guitar, while veteran Mark Hoekstra takes care of harmonica, slide guitar, and backing vocals. As soon as the band starts up, it unleashes a powerful dose of energy.
