Guitarist, singer and songwriter Lightnin Slim (real name Otis Hicks) was born in Louisiana in 1913 and was a pioneer and first prominent exponent of the Swamp Blues style. He came to recording relatively late in life, doing his first sessions in his early 40s and recording his best-known work during the late 1950s and early 60s, before retreating from the business until being re-discovered and brought back to performing in the early 1970s. His music became a significant influence on British artists during the 60s blues boom. Swamp blues, focused in the clubs of Baton Rouge, is a laid-back but highly rhythmic blues style, influenced by Cajun music, and which the book Music USA: A Rough Guide states is characterised by eerie echo, shuffle beats, tremolo guitars, searing harmonica and sparse percussion. This great-value 46-track 2-CD set comprises all the titles which Lightnin Slim recorded for the Feature, Ace and Excello labels during these years, including the only R&B chart hit of his career Rooster Blues. He is accompanied on these recordings by a variety of other Louisiana musicians, most notably the harmonica player Lazy Lester. This collection offers an entertaining insight into the music of a highly individual artist as well as a distinctive strand of regional blues.

There's no such thing as a bad Lightnin' Slim recording. This one is great. Lightnin' ranks with Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters as an artist but is lesser known because his label, Excello, was distributed mainly in the south, and that's where he played. The folk blues revival missed him, but you should not. If you love the postwar blues you'll find Lightnin's laid back drawling delivery, and his basic but moving sidemen's performances really deliver the heart of the blues. Twenty sides from the earliest years of Excello, the Nashville-based label best known for Southern-style blues and R&B, though it also recorded some country and gospel. All of these styles are present on this compilation, which may make it an uneven listen for those whose interests don't encompass each of the genres. The quality, however, is good, including a number of rarities that don't make it onto many anthologies. Arthur Gunter's original version of "Baby Let's Play House," an R&B hit before it was covered by Elvis Presley the following year, is the most famous cut by far; the only other one to be a big hit was Kid King's Combo's "Banana Split," a New Orleans-styled instrumental that made the R&B Top Ten in 1953. A number of the other blues/R&B crossovers here are delights, including the Charlie Dowell Orchestra's jump blues "Wail Daddy"; Del Thorne's jiving "Down South in Birmingham," which sounds familiar enough to be a hit, although it wasn't; the Blues Rockers' "Calling All Cows," which sounds like a bluesier variation of the famous New Orleans tune "Iko Iko," and the Leap Frogs' "Dirty Britches," with Arthur Gunter on guitar, and which, like Gunter's "Baby Let's Play House," sounds pretty close to rock & roll. Beyond the blues/R&B realm, there's updated jugband-style blues from the Dixie Doodlers, pretty hot honky tonk by Ray Batts on "Stealin' Sugar," and early uptempo doo wop on the Peacheroos' "Be Bop Baby." ~Richie Unterberger

The end of the period covered on the second installment of this Excello retrospective saw the label start to record the Louisiana swamp blues artists for whom it is most famed: Slim Harpo, Lazy Lester, Lightnin' Slim, Lonesome Sundown. While each of those artists is represented here by a cut or two (including Harpo's classic "I'm a King Bee"), much of it's devoted to more urban, mid-'50s blues/R&B crossover, most of it recorded in Nashville. A couple of these were big hits: the Marigolds' "Rollin' Stone" made the R&B Top Ten in 1955 (and was covered for a pop hit by the Fontane Sisters), while Louis Brooks made number two R&B that same year with "It's Love Baby (24 Hours a Day)" (covered with success by Ruth Brown). Jerry McCain does raw, early electric blues with "Courtin' in a Cadillac; " Guitar Gable does blues with a Mardi Gras rhythm on "Congo Mambo"; a young Johnny Copeland plays "chicken licking" guitar on Clarence Samuels' "Chicken Hearted Woman," and there are a couple of lowdown blues by Little Al (Arthur Gunter's brother). There's also some rockabilly by Johnny Jano, whose "Havin' a Whole Lot of Fun" is attractively over the top, and Al Ferrier, whose "Hey! Baby" is a transparent derivation of "Baby Let's Play House." Like volume one of this fine series, it's a good collection of a variety of sounds on the cusp of becoming rock & roll, though by this point the line was sometimes being crossed into bona fide early rock. ~Richie Unterberger

When the Rolling Stones' first new release in 11 years turned out to be an all vintage blues album some fans were a bit dismayed, but it was a natural, almost inevitable, move.

After all, the Stones began life as a blues band and they have supported its originators - sharing stages with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Etta James - and up held the blues as a key inspiration throughout their career.

Louisiana swamp bluesman Lightnin' Slim was catapulted to international fame beginning in the mid- 1950's when he became one of the top selling artists on the legendary Excello Records label. Rediscovered in the 1970's, Slim played a reunion concert with label mate Lazy Lester in Baton Rouge in 1971 and subsequently found himself a headliner at blues festivals across the US and Europe. Presented here is a collection of Slim's vintage sides including his 1954 debut "Bad Luck Blues," "That's All Right" and the classic "Things I Used To Do." All selections newly remastered.

The “By The Bayou” series leaps to Volume 18 with a return to the blues of South Louisiana, bringing you rare or previously unissued tracks from stars of the genre such as Lightnin’ Slim, Lazy Lester and Slim Harpo, plus a host of little-known or completely unknown performers. We also have two artists who you would never think performed in the downhome style – Barbara Lynn and Cookie (aka Huey Thierry) – but who sound right at home, with an unknown harmonica player setting the tone on Barbara’s track whilst Cupcakes guitarist Marshall Laday supports Cookie with some mean blues pickin’. In fact there are several tracks here that will have air-guitar virtuosos reaching for their imaginary axes.

We reveal in the booklet that the much-reported birthplace of Lightnin’ Slim may be another creation of this enigmatic performer. Sorting out the different takes of his songs has proven complicated because he was inclined to sing subtle changes in the lyrics whilst performing identical guitar work. This time we have had the support of a dedicated fan who prefers to remain anonymous but provided detailed analysis. As for Slim Harpo, ‘Cigarettes’ is one of my favourites amongst his lesser-known titles.

As always there are a handful of mystery singers. Was there really a “Ramblin’ Hi Harris”, for example, or was his name created later by J.D. Miller? Another rarity is an artist whose record doesn’t appear in that veritable tome The Blues Discography 1943-1970. T.B. Fisher may have escaped notice there but he is proof of what a great ear Huey Meaux had for all manner of music. The man had a real knack for spotting talent and bringing out their best on vinyl, and I’ll wager there will be many a blues aficionado hunting for Fisher’s disc once it’s been heard.

Raw blues gems trawled from the swamps of South Louisiana, plus a touch of zydeco. Ten tracks are previously unreleased or alternate takes, while the other 18 are extremely rare.

Baton Rouge was arguably the blues centre of Louisiana and just about all of the artists featured in this compilation spent part of their lives there. Long-time favourites Lightnin’ Slim, Lazy Lester, Slim Harpo and Silas Hogan certainly honed their skills in its clubs and bars, although they travelled some 70 miles west to record at J.D. Miller’s studio in Crowley. Everything here emanated from Miller’s studio or from his close rival Eddie Shuler’s facility in Lake Charles, except series newcomer Chris Kenner’s track, which was cut in New Orleans. Other artists new to the series are Henry Gray, Juke Boy Bonner, Elton Anderson, Ramblin’ Hi Harris and Schoolboy Cleve.

All of which means we have another feast of classic blues, led by guitar, piano or harmonica, plus a little zydeco from Clifton Chenier and Boozoo Chavis, whose tracks sit comfortably alongside the work of Lonesome Sundown, Jimmy Anderson and our other artists. During the 50s and 60s zydeco was the blues of the French-speaking black population of Louisiana, with the accordion replacing the harmonica as instrument of choice. Today the music is enjoying huge popularity, with thousands of aficionados from across the globe flooding to festivals in Lafayette, Breaux Bridge and other small towns across southwest Louisiana.

This 24-song collection undoubtedly overlaps with some of the U.S.-issued Excello material -- including the same alternate takes of "Rooster Blues" and "It's Mighty Crazy" -- but there's just enough that they don't share to make this worth a look, if not a purchase, by owners of the U.S. material. The sound, as is usual with Ace, is excellent, and the stuff is worthy of inclusion with the best of Slim's work. Among the best tracks here are two outtakes unique to this set at this time, "I'm Leavin' You Baby," on which Slim steps over into Howlin' Wolf territory ("Moanin' at Midnight," etc.), and "Sweet Little Woman," where he crosses swords with Sonny Boy Williamson. -- Allmusic.

We come with a bang, not a whimper, to the final volume in our Lightnin' Slim reissue series. Just listen in particular to the first nine tracks on this CD, and you will find some of the greatest down-home blues cut anywhere, anytime. It's all there - Lightnin's guttural vocals, Lazy Lester's emphatic harmonica, blues songs that are well-crafted, with sympathetic production work from Jay D Miller in his studio in deepest South Louisiana.

Lightnin' had the remarkable ability to personalise his work to the extent that everything he did was indelibly his own. Take a look at the lyrics of his classic Winter Time Blues (a southern regional hit in early 1963):

Yes, the little girl is just 16 years old
How'd you find out, Lightnin' (interjection by Lazy Lester)
I eavesdropped and heard her mother said
You know, she got a way of huggin' and kissin'
She'll bring livin' back to the dead.

By the mid-1960s the down-home blues was on the way out as a commercial entity with the black audience of the South-.-soul music was sweeping in with the hip young sounds of the day. Producer Jay Miller did try to update Lightnin' Slim's style by introducing organs and breaking away from the standard 12-bar format, which as liner note writer Dave Sax recalls did bring moans of emotional distress' from Lightnin's keen British collectors at the time. However, Dave admits that a retrospective look...reveals positive aspects as well.

Indeed the final Excello session is as blue as can be, climaxing with a remake of his first hit Bad Luck Blues from 1954. As Sax notes, So much had changed and yet nothing had changed...these are songs about jail and the workhouse, restlessness and wondering.

Lightnin' Slim was one of the greatest of southern bluesmen and a major influence on other bluesmen such as Buddy Guy and his younger brother Phil. Louisiana record producer Jay Miller testified "Lightnin' to me was the greatest...low-down gutbucket blues" while former manager Fred Reif says Lightnin' Slim was "one of the most significant bluesmen of his time".Born Otis Hicks on March 13th, 1913 in St Louis, Missouri, into a farming family, Lightnin' began to play guitar while a youngster. He was a farmer until 1946 when, disillusioned with the work, he moved to Baton Rouge in Louisiana to work in a fertiliser plant. He began playing local clubs and bought an electric guitar, soon finding himself a minor sensation in the area with his trademark slow, brooding blues.Discovered by local DJ Ray 'Diggie Doo' Meaders, he was introduced by him to producer Jay Miller in Crowley. The blues he recorded for Miller (which came out on Excello Records) between late 1956 and the summer of 1958 are among the classics of swamp blues, including Bad Luck, HaveYour Way, I'm Grown, Mean Ole Lonesome Train, Love Me Mama, I'm A Rollin' Stone, Hoo-Doo Blues and It's Mighty Crazy. The accompanying groups (usually no more than harmonica and drums) feature the fine harmonica playing of either Schoolboy Cleve or Lazy Lester, but it is Lightnin's raw, down-home singing, guitar playing and songwriting that hold centre stage.

For a (some would say thankfully) short period at the beginning of the 1970s, there was a vogue for dressing up the blues with the trappings of the progressive rock and soul of the day. The down-home qualitities of singers like Muddy Waters were swamped by wah-wah guitars, electric pianos, busy rock drumming and overblown horn sections. Muddy's Electric Mud remains a disastrous episode, but other projects often produced more interesting results. The final Excello albums by Lightnin' Slim and Whispering Smith featured additional horn sections (more for the former, less for the latter) but the sheer grit and down-home bluesiness of the singers' vocals, more than compensated for the more adventurous instrumental stylings. Slim's album was produced by Jerry 'Swamp Dogg' Williams and comes with the usual quota of Swamp Dogg quirkiness. Smith's album is far more rootsy, a Louisiana blues affair, with only minor intrusions from the horns. Slim and Smith toured together frequently in their final years and these two 'contemporary' albums fit together as well as the two artists did on stage.

Rooster Blues (1960):
When people talk about Louisiana swamp blues, this is what they're talking about. Excello Records' first foray into albums came with this wonderful collection of singles by Lightnin' Slim largely issued around the success of the title track, an R&B hit in 1960. "Long Leanie Mama," "My Starter Won't Work," "It's Mighty Crazy," "Hoo-Doo Blues," "Tom Cat Blues," "Lightnin' Troubles," "G.I. Slim" and "Feelin' Awful Blues" are all certified swamp blues classics and about as lowdown as the genre can get possibly get. With Lazy Lester on harmonica for the majority of the tracks here, the stripped-down approach to Slim's brand of blues casts these sides in a decidedly front-porch ambience with the added pulsating tape echo and oddball percussive effects just making everything on here sound even more doom-laden. "Lightnin's Blues," the John Lee Hooker-inspired "Just Made Twenty One" and "Sugar Plum," the A-side and both sides of his first and third singles for Excello, are the three bonus CD tracks appended to the original track lineup on this 1998 CD reissue. Bell Ringer (1965):
Superb early Slim Excello material. He never sang with more clarity or conviction, nor did his harmonica or guitar playing ever sound more electrifying than on these songs, many of which were popular singles. Other than Rice Miller's (Sonny Boy Williamson II) definitive anthem, Slim's rendition of "Don't Start Me To Talking" was the finest. ~Review by Ron Wynn
