The fourth album of five in the now sadly departed guitarist Bernie Marsden's Inspirations series comprises Marsden's devoted covers of songs by some of his rock heroes, and includes a sparkling reimagining of Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze. It opens, in homage to Peter Green, with Shake Your Money Maker, the Elmore James song made famous by blues-years Fleetwood Mac, and also includes Green's Man Of The World, as well as Like It This Way, a Danny Kirwan song from Mac's 1969 Chicago sessions album.

The choice of that illustrates Marsden's appreciation of deep cuts, underlined by a brilliant version of Rory Gallagher's Wheels Within Wheels and his take on Derek And The Dominos' Bell Bottom Blues. Two bonus originals – the instrumentals Kestrel and Barford Blues – show just how much Marsden learned from the masters named above and others, and his Midas touch is confirmed on all 12 tracks. /Neil Jeffries

There has been a huge outpouring of loving tributes to Bernie Marsden since he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on 24th August 2023 at the age of 72.

Only a few knew that he had just completed a brand new album. Earlier in August, Bernie had approved the artwork, sequence and audio masters for WORKING MAN. An album of Bernie Marsden original songs.

Fran Marsden, Bernie’s wife of over 40 years, shared with us his passion for WORKING MAN:
“Bernie was really excited about his new album, Working Man, and proud of the tracks featured on it. After the last three albums of covers he was keen for his fans to hear some new, original songs. He loved working on them in the studio during lockdown and he couldn’t wait to get the album out into the world. Conquest Music were considering delaying the release until 2024 out of respect, but knowing Bernie’s eagerness to get the album out there, we want to follow his wishes and release it as planned.”

The album contains 12 brand new Bernie Marsden penned tracks. Produced by Bernie Marsden and Mixed by Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers, The Who).

WORKING MAN will be available initially as a limited edition 2CD Digipak and 2LP set in Burgundy vinyl. These limited edition sets will also include a bonus disc of 10 more new recordings alongside the 12 track Working Man album. These bonus tracks include some astonishing reinterpretations of classic Whitesnake songs.

Full-bore guitar legend and founding member of Whitesnake Bernie Marsden pays his respects to some of the mightiest three-piece bands in history on his new release Trios. The set is the third installment of Marsden’s popular “Inspirations” series of recordings that are each meant to be a tribute to performers who inspired and helped to shape his long and influential career. The first two albums, Kings and Chess, both reached Number One on the Blues charts and put Marsden back into the Top 20 for the first time in 40 years. Trios will likely be received equally well and is jam-packed with Marsden’s retellings of songs by Jeff Beck, The James Gang, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Rick Derringer, and others. It’s a wonderful batch of performances that will appeal to rock fans everywhere.

Treasures abound on Trios and dropping the needle anywhere on it will yield excellent results. Amazingly, these tracks were recorded way back in 2007 with David Levy on bass, and the late Jimmy Copley on drums as a way to try out a new studio in Bedfordshire. They got shelved because they were never meant to be released in the first place. Marsden rediscovered them in 2021 on an old CD and was pleased with how they turned out. Happily, the original engineer, Steve Rispin had kept everything safe and sound. Marsden began remixing the songs with help from Jamie Masters and here we are today. /Mike O'Cull

At a rough guesstimate Bernie Marsden’s name appears on a hundred albums – maybe more. In addition to a long-running solo career the Buckinghamshire-born guitarist has been a recording musician since the early 1970s via membership of such groups as Whitesnake, UFO, Wild Turkey, Babe Ruth, Paice Ashton & Lord, Cozy Powell’s Hammer, Alaska, M3 and many more. Though there’s a tendency to pigeonhole him as a blues-rock guitarist, each of Marsden’s acts had its own individual flavour.

Although Marsden was wary of flooding the credits with too many special guests, ‘Shine’ does feature some extremely well-known names, from Joe Bonamassa to Whitesnake singer David Coverdale and the Deep Purple duo of Ian Paice (drums) and Don Airey (keyboards). Jimmy Copley of Jeff Beck fame behind the kit and Mark Feltham of Nine Below Zero also supplies some breathtaking harmonica playing.

So many roads were traveled to make this record a reality. Jim's long time friend and legendary guitarist Bernie Marsden recruited him to assist on a documentary highlighting Clarksdale, Mississippi's importance in the history of the blues. Jim and Bernie traveled to Clarksdale on several occasions meeting with local musicians, touring the locations where it all happened, and meeting with local blues supporters like Morgan Freeman to make the documentary. Digging in deep with musical traditions inspired Jim to pursue his own recordings further, keeping the blues alive in the Clarksdale tradition. In addition to recruiting Bernie to play on the record, a long list of guest musicians such as legendary bassist Joe Osborn, grammy winner Charlie Musselwhite, and many more contributed. This record serves as a tribute to the blues, as well as Clarksdale's musical contributions present and past.

Blues rock guitarist Bernie Marsden's hot licks helped launch the career of Whitesnake, as he played on the group's first eight releases, and lent a major hand in composing some of the band's most renowned songs. Initially inspired to play the guitar as a teenager due to such authentic blues players as Howling Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson, Marsden later picked up on such '60s white blues players as Peter Green, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck. The early '70s saw Marsden briefly join several renowned groups - Juicy Lucy and UFO - but each time, the guitarist exited before a full-length album could be completed (Marsden was also a member of a group that drummer Cozy Powell attempted to put together, Hammer, before quickly disbanding). The mid '70s saw Marsden join British prog rockers Babe Ruth for a pair of releases, 1975's Stealin' Home and 1976's Kid's Stuff, before the group broke up, as well. Marsden then supposedly turned down an offer to play with Paul McCartney, and eventually joined up with former Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale in Whitesnake.

Marsden has also sporadically issued further solo recordings, including 1992's The Friday Rock Show Sessions and the 1995 Peter Green tribute, Green and Blues. In addition to his music career, Marsden has also tried his hand at acting (the German TV movie, Frankie), and has provided soundtracks for several movie projects in both Germany and the U.S., plus serving as the art director, producer, and author of the three part TV series, The Delta Blues 1926 - Urban Blues 1960. ~Greg Prato
