Well, now that he's got our attention he's made his mind up to make good use of it. Monkey Brain is a guitar tour de force, a gritty mash of the history of roots guitar music torn down and built back up again. The title track is a grimy ode to our inner, more base impulses: "When life gets to me. My head starts to change. I give in to my Monkey Brain". On the swampy Charity Case, Sean pleads with his lover: "Why do you treat me like some charity case? It's not your business if I'm sober or straight"... we've all been there. Hard Luck is a 21st-century gospel dirge that has Sean's searing lead guitar crescendo with a one-note Neil Young-style squeal into it's signature riff with layered gospel harmonies pleading wordlessly over deep piano drones. Living In The Past eases us in with Sean's falsetto before the album's engine room Adam Warner (drums) & Mark McIntyre (bass) launch into its signature groove. Sean's guitar weaves in and out and Emma-Lee's backing vocals push the whole thing over the top. The album takes a turn with Goin' Hobo's junk-yard percussion and tongue-in-cheek lyrics about being sick of the grind and packing it all in for the hobo life cowritten with Juno winner Steve Strongman. The album closes with the duo of Monsters, an acoustic stomper keeping with the theme of fighting one's own demons and Get Burned, yet more evidence of Sean's guitar prowess, pivoting effortlessly between clean sinewy playing and ultra-dirty riff-mongering. Throughout, Sean delivers stories of personal struggle and triumph after living with depression for many years. Realizing that his grief could be put to constructive use, he began writing about everything that caused him pain, fear and heartache. Monkey Brain is his blues and he comes by it honestly.

Sean Pinchin, from Toronto, Canada, delivers eight tracks of passionate Blues-Rock in Monkey Brain, his fifth album to date. The album was co-written and recorded with JUNO Award winning producer Rob Szabo who recorded it live from the stage floor. The raw and spontaneous live sound is evident in the tracks. Pinchin is no stranger to the Canadian Blues scene, having been nominated for New Artist of the Year at the 2014 Maple Blues Awards and his 2013 album, Rustbucket, received numerous complimentary reviews. Pinchin has toured across Canada several times playing countless live shows for the past eight years. On his current CD, Monkey Brian, he is accompanied by Mark McIntyre on bass, Adam Warner on drums and percussion, Rob Szabo on backing vocals and percussion and Emma-Lee on backing vocals. Pinchin plays guitar, stomp board and provides vocals. The album was mixed by Tim Abraham and Mastered by JUNO winner Phil Demetro, both well known professionals in the Canadian music world. The experience and talent of those involved with the production of this CD are evident. The musicians are excellent, the sound quality is crystal clear and well mixed and the energy of the live recording can be felt in all of the tracks. It is professionally produced down to the last detail, even the CD packaging is impressive with a dark toned design, well-designed graphics and a photograph of Pinchin on the cover that shadows the mood of the tracks on the CD. It easily rivals any contemporary CD released by a major record label.

Rust Bucket is the latest from Sean Pinchin. Pinchin is a singer and slide guitarist with a talent that seems effortless. He is backed by incredible musicians who sound like they were meant to play together. They include Emma-Lee on backup vocals, Mark McIntyre on bass, Adam Warner on drums, and an appearance from Steve Strongman on guitar and harmonica.

The opening track “Broke Down Automobile” is high energy, short and sweet, has clever lyrics and killer backup vocals from Emma-Lee.

Pinchin’s twist on the blues makes the standard blues progressions come to life in a whole new way in songs like “Boo Hoo.” The guitar riffs are unexpected and pleasantly surprising.

“Comin’ Home” is a beautifully written song that showcases simplified guitar with outstanding vocals that reach up into Pinchin’s falsetto. Emma-Lee once again delivers backup vocals that are perfection.

Pinchin is a gifted guitarist and vocalist but one of his biggest appeals is his storytelling. This album is full of lyrics that will make the listener think “Yeah, I’ve been there, felt that.” One of those songs is “I Wanna Stay in Bed.” Everybody has had mornings where they’ve said that exact song title… and now there is a song we can sing along to about it.
