King Curtis was the last of the great R&B tenor sax giants. Born Curtis Ousley in Fort Worth, Texas, he came to prominence in the mid-'50s as a session musician in New York, recording, at one time or another, for most East Coast R&B labels. A long association with Atco/Atlantic began in 1958, especially on recordings by the Coasters. He recorded singles for many small labels in the '50s - his own Atco sessions (1958-1959), and Prestige/New Jazz and Prestige/Tru-Sound for jazz and R&B albums (1960-1961). Curtis also had a number one R&B single with "Soul Twist" on Enjoy (1962). He was signed by Capitol (1963-1964), where he cut mostly singles, including the number 20 R&B hit "Soul Serenade." He returned to Atco/Atlantic in 1965, where he remained for the rest of his life.

He had solid R&B single success with "Memphis Soul Stew" and "Ode to Billie Joe" (1967). Beginning in 1967, Curtis started to take a more active studio role at Atlantic, leading and contracting sessions for other artists, producing with Jerry Wexler, and later on his own. He also became the leader of Aretha Franklin's backing unit, the Kingpins. He compiled several albums of singles during this period. All aspects of his career were in full swing at the time he was murdered in 1971. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. /Biography by Bob Porter, AllMusic

King Curtis - Wail Man Wail! The Best Of King Curtis 1952-1961 (3 CD)

King Curtis was the last of the great R&B tenor sax giants. He came to prominence in the mid-’50s as a session musician in New York, recording, at one time or another, for most East Coast R&B labels. A long association with Atlantic/Atco began in 1958, especially on recordings by the Coasters. Over three discs and nearly 100 tracks, Wail Man Wail! traverses the unmistakable tones of the late Curtis Ousley after he arrived from Texas in New York City in 1952, winning amateur night at Harlem s Apollo before embarking on a recording career which took him to several seminal independent labels and bands with the likes of Lester Young and Lionel Hampton. He settled in New York for 17 years, declaring himself King Curtis and quickly making a name for roaring instrumentals and enhancing countless sessions.

With the assistance of K.C. expert Roy Simmonds, Dave Penny has excelled himself in providing both beginner's guide and record collector's magnet, starting with Curtis riproaring role in the earliest days of rock’n'roll on Disc 1, collating outings under his own name for labels such as RPM, Gem, Apollo, DeLuxe, Atlantic/Atco, ABC-Paramount, Everest and Sue, also encompassing his time with Alan Freed's rock’n'roll orchestra. Titles include his debut, Tenor In The Sky, Honeydripper, Dynamite and Wicky Wacky.

Discs 2 and 3 chart some of his many memorable recording sessions from between 1952 to 1957, then 1958 to 1961, respectively, names including Solomon Burke, the Willows, Roy Gaines, Neil Sedaka, Wilbert Harrison, Ruth Brown, the Coasters, Waylon Jennings, Lionel Hampton, Bobby Darin, Chuck Willis, the Avons, the Willows, Mickey & Sylvia, the Nitecaps and obscurities such as Washboard Bill. King Curtis was yet another name to fall victim to an early demise, in his case stabbed to death in 1971 after challenging two junkies using drugs outside his Manhattan apartment. Just the groin-rasping solo on Jest Smoochin is enough to convince anyone with a heart and soul that they're in the presence of greatness.

This live set from the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival was co-led by tenor saxophonist King Curtis (who tragically would be killed three months later) and veteran blues pianist/vocalist Champion Jack Dupree. With guitarist Cornell Dupree (in excellent form), bassist Jerry Jemmott and drummer Oliver Jackson laying down the foundation, Curtis and Dupree find a great deal of common musical ground. Dupree has quite a few witty vocals (particularly the near-classic "Junker's Blues") while taking choruses of irregular length that keep his sidemen continually guessing. Trouble in Mind is a very unusual King Curtis set. Rather than playing R&B-ish tenor as usual, Curtis switches to alto, plays effective guitar on a few numbers, and sings most of the tunes. Joined by guitarists Al Casey and Mac Pierce, pianist Paul Griffin, bassist Jimmy Lewis, drummer Belton Evans, and three female vocalists, Curtis sticks mostly to veteran blues songs (including "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," "Bad Bad Whiskey," and "Ain't Nobody's Business") and lets the band stretch out on the eight-minute "Deep Fry." Founded as a specialist rhythm and blues label, Groove was a subsidiary of the mighty RCA Victor and would enjoy a limited life. Here we are concentrating on its first and most fruitful incarnation under Bob Rolontz, a former reporter for US music trade paper Billboard who was headhunted by RCA to be Groove's A&R guru, with tracks from the likes of Rebecca Lea, King Curtis and Sonny Terry.
