Lorenzo Thompson (Chicago) is pure passion and dedication. His voice fills every space in any room. He sings in the tour van, he sings while he eats, and surely in his dreams too. But when he takes the stage, that voice captures the hearts of the entire audience, and Lorenzo becomes something special, an impeccable showman, the kind even purists love to see. The Buenos Aires guitarist José Luis Pardo crossed paths with Lorenzo in the nineties in his beloved Buenos Aires. On that occasion, Pardo opened for Thompson at the Blues Special Club in La Boca, when he was just a teenager and taking his first steps in the blues. Many years and shuffles later, at the end of September 2010, Lorenzo and JLP, along with Spanish harmonica player Quique Gómez, embarked on a marathon tour of Spain. They played at various island festivals, culminating their adventure at the Palma de Mallorca Blues Festival.
It was there that the Thompson-Pardo-Gómez trio joined forces with Jordi Alvarez and his Big Yuyu, an impeccable band from Mallorca with whom Pardo had shared laughter, busy schedules, and countless shows. The idea arose naturally and instantly from everyone at the same time: “Let’s record!!” In the incomparable setting of the rural Maria de la Salut, more reminiscent of the Mississippi Delta than the touristy, crowded island of Mallorca, the band entered Jordi Alvarez’s Sa Grava studio to record 13 tracks, of which 11 would make the final cut. They were joined by Juan Amaro on bass and Pep Lluis García on drums, and the recording was produced by the Blues “R” Us agency.
The repertoire is classic, but it sounds renewed and fresh. Perhaps that's because this is a true "international friendly," different passports with one common stamp: Blues. The album opens with Muddy Waters' "I Want to Be Loved," featuring exceptional harmonica work by Quique Gómez. It's followed by the hypnotic "Do the Do" by the howling wolf Chester Burnett. "Evil," "Killing Floor," and several other classics are featured, showcasing the band's elegant and polished sound, maintaining that raw, gritty edge that every blues album needs.
Robert Cray's "Phone Booth" is perhaps the only departure from the Chicago blues sound, though paradoxically, it's a true blues story set in the Windy City. “I’m new in Chicago and I don’t have anyone else to call,” Thompson howls. On this track, Jordi Alvarez and Pardo deliver their solos with maturity and conviction, as they do throughout the entire album. The album closes with a great acoustic version of "Blow Wind Blow," which complements the acoustic section with a rendition of Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen."
