Ray Beadle returns with the release of Bound to Get the Blues, recorded live off the floor to tape at Studios 301 in Sydney in early February of 2022 - Bound to Get the Blue is a dirty blues rock album featuring seven new Beadle original recordings.

Ray's guitar and vocal styles evoke numerous blues legends, whilst concocting a breathtaking style all of his own. It is not by chance that Ray has become a favourite amongst Australian music fans. An exhilarating guitarist, an enthralling singer-songwriter, and an extremely talented performer.

Bluesy Floor Filler’s that Sound Like They are From the Early 60’s But Still Contemporary Enough for Somewhere Dark and Sweaty For Next Saturday Too.

While we receive most of our new music from North America and the UK of course;’ but over the years we’ve also built up some interesting and innovative contacts around the world especially in Australia; where this album originated.
Because DURN TOOTIN’ comes from Australia I’d never have heard of RAY BEADLE & THE FOREDAY RIDERS were it not for their Press Guy, Stuart reminding me several times ‘how much he thought I’d like these tracks‘ …. and how right he was/is, even though they have been ‘going’ in one form or another for 55 years!

This particular album was recorded ‘as live’ in front of a small audience in 2020 and has had very little added or taken away in the control room and the result is as sparkling as it is raw. With no intros, the band just stroll into our lives with the sweet sound of Chicago via a slinky nightspot in Sydney ….. Close to You, which ticks all of my boxes for Blues music like this …. be that a pub band or an Arena filler.
The band then fire on all cylinders with the feisty instrumental, Cookin’ at The Continental which features Ron King on harmonica; and boy can he make it wail and cry; clearly overshadowing Jeff King’s awesome guitar playing.
Even the first night I played this I knew I was in for the long haul this early ….. and it all gets even better and better as the songs come and go like a Southern Breeze.
This is the type of music I cut teeth on in the mid 70’s when the Blues Boom was at its peak in the pubs and clubs of NE England; but no matter what my memory tells me about The Blues Burglars and/or The Young Bucks etc. they weren’t a patch on these sounds.
The songwriting too is quite exceptional; with the slinky No More Doggin’ sounding quite timeless; but the story is as contemporary as anything Ed Sheeran has ever recorded; and it’s a similar story with Evalina and I’ll Never Let You Go too; Classic Chicago Blues with a 21st Century twist in the tale.
Surprisingly; but not totally unexpected there are a lot of instrumentals included here; and the guys’ exceptional musicianship shines on each and everyone which are all totally worthy of your time; as if they were Jazz pieces …… especially the title track Darn Tootin’ and the slow and sleazy The Peeper which closes proceeding …. leaving the listener wanting MORE!
For my Favourite Track I have my usual dilemma …..initially it was going to be the quaintly monickered L+N, which comes at you like the actual train they romantically sing about right out of the tunnel; and it’s full of rinky-dink piano ala Professor Longhair, drumming that Charlie Watts would be proud of; some fiery guitars that remind me of both Kenny Burrell AND Duane Eddy …. all held together by Stan ‘Sleepy’ Mobbs’ humongous bass lines but I keep getting drawn back time and time again to the soft shoe shuffle of For Mods Only; which would surely have been a floor filler back in the clubs of the early 60’s as well as my time in the 70’s and no doubt somewhere dark and sweaty last Friday night and next Saturday too, so probably for the first time ever, on an album with songs on, I’m choosing an instrumental as my Favourite track.
There’s absolutely no reason that there wouldn’t be a vibrant Blues scene in Australia; just that I wasn’t aware of it ….. and if there’s more out there of this quality ….. you know where I am!

Ray’s life as a musician started when he was just 9, and for the next 30+ years, Ray has played with and learnt from the best, including many years spent performing and recording with the Foreday Riders; (commonly referred to as the ‘University of the Blues’).

Ray has shared the stage with many great Australian and International artists and has thrilled countless festival audiences. A three month residency with the house band in BB King’s Club in Memphis, as well as several Southern Blues festivals, were all defining moments during Ray’s three tours to the USA.

Following his return from Memphis USA where he placed top 8 in the prestigious International Blues Challenge, Ray Beadle released his first album in 7 years in the form of The 301 Live Session. Featuring Ray Beadle on guitar & vocals, Jonathan Zwartz on double bass and Andrew Dickeson on snare & brushes, The 301 Live Session saw the trio hit Studios 301 in March 2020 to record the 9-track album. The result is a slick collection of selected Beadle originals and legendary blues numbers (covering the likes of Robert Johnson, J.B. Lenoir, Louis Jordan, L.J. Welch, Joseph Perkins Greene, Muddy Waters and J. Smith).

Ray’s next album saw him pushing the boundaries leaning more towards Jazz with the release of Twisted Blues with Clayton Doley and Andrew Dickeson (The Guitar, Organ, Drums Trio) one of best collaborations the world has seen since Wes Montomery, Jimmy Smith and Grady Tate got together in the 60's to change the shape of Jazz as we know it, pushing it to a new level, modernising it and putting their own unique blues stamp on it!

With the downturn of live shows in 2021, Ray took to the studio, a basement at his managers house to record some solo tracks with his Tasman acoustic guitar, thinking what it would have been like to see the Delta bluesmen in their prime in some juke joint down in Mississippi. Inspired by the idea, the power the blues can have in it’s simplest form “voice and guitar” delta style. The result is a 4 track EP, Death Bed Blues available 12 November 2021

As a warm up to Thredbo Blues Festival 2020, Ray hit the stage at The Brass Monkey on Friday 17th January with his big band, The Hi Tones (Clayton Doley: Keys, James Hauptmann: Drums, Victor Rounds: Bass, Matt Keagan: Sax, Jack Purdon: Trumpet & Mike Raper – Trombone) and we hit the record button, the result, a true classic live album.

Often cited as Sydney’s ‘university of the blues’, the Foreday Riders celebrate 50 years as a working band in 2017, and despite countless line-up changes, 2 original members from 1967 remain: the King Brothers, Ron (harmonica, vocals) and Jeff (guitar, Dobro) who continue as happy ‘backroom boys’ in the current outfit. The rhythm section is also highly durable: Rosscoe ‘Stinger’ Clark (drums) has been a Rider since 1982, and as a master shuffle player, has worked with the Cyril B Bunter band, Ray Beadle, Bridie King, Darren Jack and Alison Penney among others – he’s decidedly the go-to guy for blues drumming in Sydney; Stan ‘Sleepy’ Mobbs has been on bass with the Riders since 1990 and underpins the band with the smooth, swinging yet rock-solid feel essential to electric blues. Like Rosscoe, Stan is also much in demand by other Sydney bands, and has worked with master guitarist Mal Eastick and other notables such as Ray Beadle, Bridie King and Christina Crofts. The Riders are currently privileged to have in he crucial role of front man the highly regarded singer/guitarist Shane Pacey, widely known for his work with the Bondi Cigars, and who also leads his own blues trio. Shane’s association with the Riders goes back to the late 1980s, and he has stayed in touch ever since; his intense vocals, attacking guitar style and strong song-writing make him an asset to any band, and his presence has honed the edge on the Riders’ sound.

WHEN the young lads of London took to playing the blues in the late '50s and early '60s one of the qualities that few could capture was the music's swing. Instead they made it rock, and blues-rock was born. But that elusive and crucial swing component helped make electric blues emotionally ambiguous.

Generations of subsequent guitarists have spent too much time listening to Clapton, Beck, Page and the rest, rather than their precursors. Not Ray Beadle. The brilliant Sydney guitarist, who had to turn to truck-driving to support his family, is back doing what he does best: making the blues swing and spark, and launching a CD called Spellbound. There is something delightfully unassuming about Beadle's virtuosity, which has less aggression and grandstanding than is routine. He improvises solos that sizzle with invention and surprise, underpinned by this relaxed, loping sense of rhythm. The combination marks him as one of the finest blues guitarists Australia has produced.

Ray Beadle - 2 albums: The Good Life / It's Personal

Ray Beadle is an established Australian blues musician. After more than 10 years in the business, Ray is still very young for his considerable talent. He was noticed in the early part of this century performing a 3-month residency with the house band in B.B King’s Club in Memphis and Buddy Guy’s Blues Club in Chicago as well as several Southern Blues festivals in the US of A. While in the states Ray recorded with Mark Sallings and has also had the privilege of performing with American greats such as Andy Just, Dave Bowen and Chris Cain.

Chris Cain remarked “Ray is unquestionably one of the finest musicians I have come across …His song writing has a harmonic and emotional depth that many strive for but few capture. Ray’s guitar work… well, lets just say this cat is VERY dangerous.”
