Vidar Busk, Daniel Eriksen and Stig Sjøstrøm are Norway's perhaps the toughest blues combo. We speak two of the country's leading blues guitarists with drums in the back that serve unrestrained boogie, vintage rock 'n' roll and steaming blues with a lot of punch and humor.

The trio has been playing at New Orleans, and across the Mississippi and Memphis many times, and their music is deeply rooted in the area's blues traditions, interspersed with rock 'n' roll and mardi gras rhythms.

Vidar Busk grew up in Langesund, Norway, but traveled to the USA as a 15 year old to play in the band of the American bluesist Rock Bottom. He went to the United States for several years before returning to Norway in 1990 and won the Smuget Award in 1994. He eventually got a solid band together and made his record debut under the name Vidar Busk & His True Believers with "Stompin Our Feet With Joy" in 1997 with great success.

The album was more than well received in the blues environments and rewarded with the NBF Blues Prize during the Notodden Blues Festival. With his second album, "I Came Here To Rock", he was nominated and named the Artist of the Year under the Spillemann Prize in 1998.

After releasing three albums of driving and swing-based blues rock with His True Believers as backing band, he started flirting with other styles and returned with a brand new sound in 2001 with his fourth album "Venus Texas". (Translated from Norwegian)

(Note: On track 12 there are five minutes of silence after 3:35, then a hidden instrumental bonus track starts. Just for your information.)

Well-known and well-trained Busk. Not too much has happened with the Norwegian blues guitarist since "Jookbox Charade" in 2007, where he praised all his old models. This time, he hides silent performances - from rockabilly through surf and back to rock'n roll. It burns violently in Busk's guitar fingers yet - the soles are sparkling - but it does not feel new anymore, with honorable exceptions to the citizen's use of the title song.

It is ten years since Vidar Busk started a soulful neoblues trilogy, which unfortunately he jumped away from too early. Now he is back where he started, everybody knows him - like the blues's big showman. It's probably better off the stage. (Translated from Norwegian.)

13. Dream On Silver Surfer (1:47)
14. Thirteen Women (17:08)

Vidar Busk has played blues professionally for almost two thirds of his life since he was sixteen years old. It has been a roller coaster with ups and downs during these thirty years. Musically he has always been sharp, and he has moved in and out of styles, from rockabilly and jump blues through New Orleans style music to soul, but the blues has always been there.

Vidar Busk’s first three albums - "Stompin' Our Feet With Joy", "I Came Here To Rock" and "Atomic Swing" - were in the style of jump blues, rockabilly and big band blues, but later on he ventured over to his own flavor of soul noir, Louisiana style. Lately he has been back to blues, more or less, but mixing in elements from other styles into an interesting musical gumbo and nowadays he is back with his old band, His True Believers.

(Note: Track 14 contains a hidden bonus track. The orginal track, Thirteen Women, ends at 5:07 and then there are approx 7 minutes of silence before the bonus tracks starts.)

Vidar Busk is a 27 year old blues wildman from Norway. He plays guitar and sings. Listen to the song "Ballad Of Vidar Busk" for the story of a very young Norwegian kid playing on the blues chittlin' circuit in the Southern USA. For this CD he has assembled a band of extraordinary talent. The young harmonica player, 22 year old Arne Rasmussen, is in the same league as William Clarke, Rod Piazza and Kim Wilson. He is a formidable talent who is destined to make some big waves in the harp world. The drummer is 24 year old Martin Winstad. He is inventive and daring, yet remains solidly in the pocket. Rune Endal on bass is a well known figure on the Norwegian music scene. He has played in some very popular bands, and his swingin', deceptively simple playing cuts a groove as wide as the Mississippi River.

On top of this soulful stew rides Vidar on his guitar. He is a tone freak that uses an array of offbrand and vintage hollow bodies and planks to achieve his tasty licks. His playing is extremely funky but also richly traditional. He is inventive, powerful, stunning and completely in control. In short, he is a master of the blues language. And by the way, this guy can sing! /From the liner notes written by Rock Bottom

Bluesguitarists meet. Two of the most talented and dedicated norwegian bluesguitarists hooks up with Legend Junior Watson. Produced by Kid Andersen.

"Vidar Busk, Kid Andersen and Junior Watson giggle before they start playing “In The Støt,” one of 12 great songs on “Guitarmageddon.” Then they tickle the audience with some silly lyrics and a blazing barrage of pure joy from their guitars.

“Guitarmageddon” is first and foremost a blues album, but there’s a fair amount of rockabilly, too, especially on “Caveman Rock.” There’s even a little surf guitar thrown in. My favorite song on the album is “Let’s Drink … Another Bottle Of The Blues,” a scorching blues battle between Watson, a West Coast guitar wizard, and Busk and Andersen, who hail from Norway. I also love “Off the Record,” a sexy slow blues. I like the singing on the album just fine, but the guitar playing gets me so jacked up I have a hard time getting to sleep at a reasonable hour when I listen to Busk, Andersen and Watson play. And, yeah, sometimes I start giggling." ~Carl Abernathy
