Ruth Brown's lengthy career has taken her from the Apollo Theater to Broadway. One of the original rhythm & blues superstars, she has emerged on the other side as one of the genre's most beloved singers. On this outing, producer Scott Billington returns Brown to her roots in the company of a superb New Orleans band, surrounds her with stellar arrangements of new and old songs, and just lets her rip. The kickoff track, "That Train Don't Stop Here," finds her in a bluesy groove with a lengthy rap at the end that extends the running time to almost seven minutes.

Tunes like "In Another World," "Too Little Too Late," and "Break It to Me Gently" mine classic soul ballad territory, while Brown's jazzy side comes to the fore on "Sold My Heart to the Junkman" and "Love Letters." In the blues department, fine versions of Ivory Joe Hunter's "False Friend Blues" and Willie Mabon's "I Don't Know" strengthen the song selection, while Brown teams up with Bonnie Raitt on a conversational "Outskirts of Town." On the last tune, Sarah Brown's "Can't Get Excited," Ruth Brown starts out militant and winds up flirtatious, making a fitting closer for this great little album. Comprised of two prior Atlantic collections, this 26-track disc features the cream from Brown's hitmaking stretch for the label during most of the '50s. Along with such smashes as "(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean," "Lucky Lips," and "Teardrops From My Eyes," there are plenty of minor gems to be had like "Somebody Touched Me" and "I Can See Everybody's Baby." And adding a bit of '50s pop verve, there are rockin' novelties like the Bobby Darin-penned "This Little Girls Gone Rockin'" and Lieber and Stoller's "I Can't Hear a Word You Say" (all told, the Coasters' hitmaking duo contribute three cuts to the mix).

Along with a balanced mix of A- and B-sides, the disc features a support crew that includes tenor saxophonists Budd Johnson and Willis Jackson, trumpeter Taft Jordan, guitarist Mickey Baker, and drummer Connie Kay. This Collectables title might not beat out Rhino's two-disc retrospective, but it certainly will suit those in the market for a less-exhaustive introductory collection. /Stephen Cook, AllMusic

They didn't call Atlantic Records "The House That Ruth Built" for nothing -- Ruth Brown was one of the first major stars at America's greatest rhythm and blues label, and she produced some of the strongest and sauciest R&B sides of the 1950s. Brown was well into her peak hitmaking period when the material on this collection was cut -- of the 23 tunes included on this disc, which represents all the material she recorded for Atlantic between 1954 and 1956, nine made it into the Top Ten of Billboard's rhythm and blues charts, a very impressive batting average indeed. This set includes B-sides and material that got lost in the shuffle along with the hits, so while there's plenty of great music here, there are a few numbers not up to Brown's usual standards, such as the overly sentimental "Mom Oh Mom" and "When I Get You Baby," which is nearly sunk by a busy and overblown arrangement. But the bulk of the material rocks cool and steady, and Brown's superb way with a vocal never fails to impress. The majority of the songs on this disc sound terrific, though the sound quality of a few is not as good, with some possibly rescued from vinyl. Despite its minor flaws, this set -- like its two predecessors, which collect Brown's recordings from 1949 to 1950 and 1951 to 1953 -- is a boon to hardcore Ruth Brown fans, and amply demonstrates how consistently good she was during her heyday. ~Mark Deming

They called Atlantic Records "the house that Ruth built" during the 1950s, and they weren't referring to the Sultan of Swat. Ruth Brown's regal hitmaking reign from 1949 to the close of the '50s helped tremendously to establish the New York label's predominance in the R&B field. Later, the business all but forgot her -- she was forced to toil as domestic help for a time -- but she returned to the top, her status as a postwar R&B pioneer (and tireless advocate for the rights and royalties of her peers) recognized worldwide.

Young Ruth Weston was inspired initially by jazz chanteuses Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and Dinah Washington. She ran away from her Portsmouth home in 1945 to hit the road with trumpeter Jimmy Brown, whom she soon married. A month with bandleader Lucky Millinder's orchestra in 1947 ended abruptly in Washington, D.C., when she was canned for delivering a round of drinks to members of the band. Cab Calloway's sister Blanche gave Ruth a gig at her Crystal Caverns nightclub and assumed a managerial role in the young singer's life. DJ Willis Conover dug Brown's act and recommended her to Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson, bosses of a fledgling imprint named Atlantic. Unfortunately, Brown's debut session for the firm was delayed by a nine-month hospital stay caused by a serious auto accident en route to New York that badly injured her leg. When she finally made it to her first date in May 1949, she made up for lost time by waxing the torch ballad "So Long" (backed by guitarist Eddie Condon's band), which proved to be her first hit.

Brown's seductive vocal delivery shone incandescently on her Atlantic smashes "Teardrops in My Eyes" (an R&B chart-topper for 11 weeks in 1950), "I'll Wait for You" and "I Know" in 1951, 1952's "5-10-15 Hours" (another number one rocker), the seminal "(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean" in 1953, and a tender Chuck Willis-penned "Oh What a Dream," and the timely "Mambo Baby" the next year. Along the way, Frankie Laine tagged her "Miss Rhythm" during an engagement in Philly. Brown belted a series of her hits on the groundbreaking TV program Showtime at the Apollo in 1955, exhibiting delicious comic timing while trading sly one-liners with MC Willie Bryant (ironically, ex-husband Jimmy Brown was a member of the show's house band).

After an even two-dozen R&B chart appearances for Atlantic that ended in 1960 with "Don't Deceive Me" (many of them featuring hell-raising tenor sax solos by Willis "Gator" Jackson, who many mistakenly believed to be Brown's husband), Brown faded from view. After raising her two sons and working a nine-to-five job, Brown began to rebuild her musical career in the mid-'70s. Her comedic sense served her well during a TV sitcom stint co-starring with MacLean Stevenson in Hello, Larry, in a meaty role in director John Waters' 1985 sock-hop satire film Hairspray, and her 1989 Broadway starring turn in Black and Blue (which won her a Tony Award).

There were more records for Fantasy in the '80s and '90s (notably 1991's jumping Fine and Mellow), and a lengthy tenure as host of National Public Radio's Harlem Hit Parade and BluesStage. Brown's nine-year ordeal to recoup her share of royalties from all those Atlantic platters led to the formation of the nonprofit Rhythm & Blues Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping others in the same frustrating situation. In 1993 Brown was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and 1995 saw the release of her autobiography, Miss Rhythm. Brown suffered a heart attack and stroke following surgery in October 2006 and never fully recovered, passing on November 17, 2006. ~Bill Dahl

Over the years, the Classics label has done an admirable job reissuing rare jazz sessions in chronological order with great sound quality and informative liner notes. They are also dedicated to applying that same care to their outstanding Blues & Rhythm Series. This particular set features Ruth Brown's earliest recording sessions from 1949 and 1950, in which she was a torch singing chanteuse, not the R&B pioneer she became. Similar to Ray Charles, Ruth Brown's initial recording dates differ drastically in approach from the material recorded in the late '50s for Atlantic Records. Brown's renditions of "Sentimental Journey," "Someday," "Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe," and her first hit, "So Long," backed by Eddie Condon's band, are timeless and highly recommended. ~by Al Campbell

Various - The Rounder Records Story (4-Disc Boxset)

This four-disc, 87-track retrospective covers the first four decades of one of the most successful "folk" labels in history. Co-founders/owners Ken Irwin, Marian Leighton Levy, and Bill Nowlin assembled a collection that showcases -- one disc per decade -- how deeply entrenched the label was in the 1970s in exposing various forms of folk music from traditional to emergent ones, and how its focus expanded. Disc one includes tracks by newgrass outfit J.D. Crowe & the New South, outsider songwriter Michael Hurley, banjoist Ola Belle Reed, Appalachian traditionalists Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard, and ace superpicker Norman Blake and the Cajun sounds of D.L Menard & the Louisiana Aces. It also reveals the label's first big directional shakeup by including George Thorogood & the Delaware Destroyers' scorching read of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love." The '80s reflect a wider reach still, with tracks by soulman Ted Hawkins, the Klezmer Conservatory Band, polka revisionists Brave Combo, country songwriter Keith Whitley, and blues artists Rory Block and Johnny Copeland. There's also a deeper step into Louisiana traditions with music by Professor Longhair, James Booker, and Buckwheat Zydeco included, too. This decade also signaled the arrival of Nanci Griffith on Rounder's Philo imprint. In the '90s, Rounder's profile was enhanced by the arrival of bluegrass queen Alison Krauss, who has been a best-selling artist for them ever since. There were more singer/songwriter types on the imprint too, such as Bill Morrissey, Tish Hinojosa, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore; more modern electric blues and R&B talents were showcased too in Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Tracy Nelson, Ruth Brown, Johnny Adams, and Wilson Pickett; and the label still held traditional sway with bluegrass mainstay Krauss and uber-tradtionalist James King. The first decade of the new century reveals Rounder's wide range in embracing everything they felt they could sell: from Americana-drenched rock acts such as Son Volt and the Cowboy Junkies to uber-rockers Rush; the vanguard pop of They Might Be Giants and jazzy chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux; to British folk maven Linda Thompson, as well as experimental projects like the Grammy-winning Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Krauss. Country-pop legend and stalwart Willie Nelson also recorded for them. But no matter their genre extensions, bluegrass is still part of Rounder's mix, as cuts by Dailey & Vincent, Rhonda Vincent, and Blue Highway attest. It's impressive to be sure. That said, despite the range of music here and the fine historical essay by Geoffrey Himes, two chapters are missing: a disc that focuses on their vast licensing of traditional music, and the essential collection of tracks by American songwriting icons such as Tom Russell, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Guy Clark, rockabilly queen Rosie Flores, and R&B legend Eddie Hinton, most of whom recorded multiple albums for the label and its subsidiaries. Here's hoping Rounder will consider a second collection to showcase these lesser-selling projects from essential artists who are an indelible part of its story. ~Thom Jurek

On this release, King comes close to equaling his past triumphs on small independent labels in the '50s and '60s. He's ditched the psuedo-hip production fodder and cut a 12-song set matching him with blues peers. His duets with Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Albert Collins are especially worthy, while the songs with Koko Taylor, Ruth Brown, and Irma Thomas have some good-natured banter and exchanges, as well as tasty vocals.

This soundtrack to the movie features an astonishing array of blues artists from three generations. Recorded during one long night at NYC's Radio City Music Hall on Feb. 7, 2003, the electricity is in the air and on stage. While it may not have been the finest blues show in history, the collection of founding fathers such as David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Buddy Guy, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Larry Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Solomon Burke, and the ubiquitous B.B. King along with their spiritual offspring (Gregg Allman, John Fogerty, and Steven Tyler) and some usual suspects like Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, and Keb' Mo', makes it arguably the most significant blues session ever captured on film.

Beginning acoustic, the double disc builds momentum and volume as we hear the blues mutate to electric and finally hip-hop with Chuck D. exploding on a rap version of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom." The crackling house band led by drummer Steve Jordan provides foundation for gritty, roof-raising pieces like the unusual collaboration between former New York Doll David Johansen and guitarist Sumlin on Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor." Compiled by R&B and rock & roll authority Dave Penny, the 90-track 3 CD set Voodoo Voodoo pays tribute to the distaff side of 1950s R&B music that would inform the rock ’n’ roll explosion of the latter half of the decade, from the last shout of the 1940s big band “thrushes” such as Ella Johnson and Dinah Washington, through the fearsome vocal power of the likes of R&B trailblazers such as Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker and Big Mama Thornton, to the early experiments of the mainstream pop singers such as Ella Mae Morse, Kay Starr, Peggy Lee, Lillian Briggs and Jaye P. Morgan.

That ages old question, who cut the first rock ’n’ roll record?, will never be answered as the style evolved over several years, and in any case everyone has their own idea of what constitutes rock ’n’ roll. By contrast the question, who was the first white performer to successfully utilise the black R&B style and mould it into a sound that could convincingly be labelled “rock ‘n’ roll”?, sounds more straightforward: surely it was Elvis Presley or Bill Haley? But was it? There is a compelling argument that the women beat the men to the punch when it came to assimilating black music for white consumption in the 1950s and while it might not have been the TKO that history tells us was delivered by Presley or Haley, it was still a mighty blow that deserves to be better documented. Indeed, rather than the black vocal harmony groups that originated “Fool, Fool, Fool” and “Money Honey”, it is now suggested that Elvis was influenced to record these songs in his early years from the cover versions by Kay Starr and Ella Mae Morse.

So prepare yourself for a whole lot of rhythm and rock from 65 feisty females on Voodoo Voodoo, a compilation that is happy to embrace singers from across a range of styles – R&B, big band and pop – just so long as they deliver the goods vocal-wise. From the mid-50s to the early 60s, R&B belonged not just to men with guitars, but to women who sang with hungry voices on stages and in studios across the US. Their roots were planted in the blues of Ma Rainey, Mamie Smith, Ida Fox and Bessie Smith, the gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the jazz of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. Their legacy lies in the recordings collected on "Ain’t Gonna Hush" by journalist (Mojo, Record Collector) and R&B authority Lois Wilson.

Selected because of their collectability and popularity on the club scene, the 76 tracks on the 3 CD set "Ain’t Gonna Hush" include contributions by crowned queens of soul Etta James and Aretha Franklin, and other luminaries like Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, Little Esther, LaVern Baker and Betty Everett. But lesser-known names are also well represented, whose recordings, like most of the songs collected here, sold poorly, but fetch huge prices today. Here those unfortunate turns of fate are redressed with a collection that compiles the forgotten alongside the famed. Ain’t Gonna Hush reasserts the eminence of revered voices and proposes the coronation of a larger cast of R&B Queens.

Rounder's Perfect 10 Series compiles recycled tracks taken from Ruth Brown's short stint with the label in 1997 and 1998. The ten tracks are taken from her two Grammy-nominated albums R+B = Ruth Brown and A Good Day for the Blues, highlighted by collaborations with Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Duke Robillard, and Bonnie Raitt. Since most fans will no doubt already own this material, it appears to be marketed to the novice. Considering the lack of liner notes and the original discs being easily obtainable, there's little reason to purchase this mid-line, generic compilation. ~Al Campbell

Earthjustice, which put together the Fish Tree Water Blues CD, is a nonprofit group whose goal is to provide free legal assistance to organizations fighting for environmental causes. The proceeds from this CD will go to Earthjustice to help fund their projects. If you like protecting clean water, preserving rain forests, protecting endangered species or just like good blues music, this might be a disc that interests you. The disc features 14 songs from a diverse field of musicians. For the most part, and with only a couple of notable exceptions, the compilation sticks to the discs earthy theme. Five of the songs have never been released or qualify for that first new recording in many years category. For example, J.J. Cale's "Stone River", Alvin Youngblood Hart's banjo heavy "Rollin' River", Robert Cray's live "The Forecast (Calls For Pain)", Mavis Staple's "I'll Fly Away", and the Charlie Musselwhite with Bob Weir's Ratdog performing "Take Me To The River", all great stuff. This is a really good compilation from start to finish and definetly a worthwhile acquisition.
