Back in the Seventies, the bard with the long grey beard toured the globe with Rory Gallagher. That must have been some trip. Now in his mid-Sixties, Van Campenhout is starting to look a little weather-beaten - which is de rigueur for an authentic, original blues musician, along with the unmistakable gritty smoke-filled voice. ... and the plangent twang resonating from the steel strings of his acoustic guitar. Backed by a blues harp and a bassy ethnic instrument, van Campenhout produces 80% of the sound on stage in this concert, which was recorded especially for the forthcoming live album. In Steven De bruyn, Campenhout has recruited a member of the new generation of blues men. ... And in De bruyn's virtuosic hands and lips, the harmonica generates a raw and emotional intensity ... a perfect foil to the dampened basslines pumped out by Pascale Michiels on her array of four-stringed instruments - all purchased in China. It was an evening for the purists, close-up and personal - a one-man show starring the legendary Campenhout.
