One vital element of popular music has become a rare commodity in the contemporary charts; an endangered species in urgent need of a preservation society. It is the simple art of "swing" - it may be hard to define, but you know it when you hear it. It can arise from the pumping let hand of a boogie piano player, from the solid walking bass lines of a honky-tonk cowboy, from the pin-sharp brushwork of a jazz drummer. It's a musical race where every yard is covered in precisely the same time, where all the runners have been blended into a perfect team. No staccato funk, no synthetic doodlings, no juvenile verbal posturing - no nonsense.
The music on this CD covers a huge range; from classy big-band jazz to a bunch of Welsh rockers enjoying themselves; from smokey three-in-the-morning stuff to rollicking blues - the unifying factor is that all the musicians involved show a perverse determinantion to swing like a demented pendulum.
For your delectation Charly have trawled widely to assemble this breathless package, but honourable mention should be made of the legendary King label which chips in with about half of the selections. When king was founded in 1943 in Cincinnati it was basically as a country-and-western label, boasting such stars as the Delmore Brothers and MoonMullican. But in the late 40s it diversified into r&b, signing artists like Roy Brown and Wynonie Harris, and it is on its black roster - notably James Brown - that the label's reputation largely rests. /Excerpt from the liner notes by John Collins
