Big Will & the Bluesmen is a Dutch bluesgroup with roots in the authentic Delta- and Chicagobluestradition. The songs they are performing live are a mixture of own material and traditionals. Anyone who pays attention can hear the influence of legendary bluesmen like Robert Johnson, Son House, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Lightning Hopkins echoing in the band’s music. The songs are characterized by the raw and refined bluesharpnotes played by Will and the lack of long bluesrock-guitarsolos.
The band was formed in the beginning of 2008. Will (bluesharp) and Alex (vocals/guitar) started searching for some bluescompanions and after some changes Jos (drums) and Henk (bass) were added to the Bluesmen.
After numerous shows the band recorded their first album “Trouble No More” at the end of 2009 and in 2010 the album was released by the band itself. With a mix of covers and own songs this debut-cd was received very well. Lots of excellent reviews, appearances in radio- and t.v. shows and a top ten ranking in de Dutch Blues charts gave Big Will & the Bluesman a major boost.
On the wave of success the band continued to rehearse and perform as much as possible in their aim to become one of the leading bands of the Dutch bluesscene. The band worked very hard to increase the number of songs on the playlist and by national and international networking. Lots of fans supported Big Wil & the Bluesmen by saying they hear them play the real, true blues from the heart and not some cliché bluesrock that seems to be mainstream these days.
In the spring of 2011 the band’s second album “Hard Times” was recorded live and this cd contains only selfwritten material. Some guestmusicians were invited, among them well-known bluesguitarist and friend Peter Struijk, and in a timespann of two days all eleven songs on Hard Times were recorded. Also with an outstanding Gerbrand on piano who has become a bandmember eversince then!
From the moment on that Hard Times was released by BlueShine Record, the album got smashing reviews and plenty of worldwide airplay. Dutch t.v. and radio celebrity Johan Derksen played the cd week after week in his own radio-show and kept on telling his audience that this was the real Mississippiblues, incredibly well performed by Big Will & the Bluesmen.
Also the international booking-agents and bluespromoters have now discovered Big Will & the Bluesmen. Besides numerous gigs in the Netherlands the band is touring France and Germany in 2012. Dave Saunders and Harry Skinner formed The Producers in 1990. They went on to be one of the most popular blues outfits in the country at that time winning the 'Blues Band of the Year' award 4 times, releasing 7 CD albums one of which 'Ain't No Love in the World' was nominated for the 'Best Blues Album' award. They regularly sold out venues around the country and were among the first to feature an acoustic set in their show which led to Theatre and Art Centre bookings nationwide, the whole acoustic set became almost de rigueur and every band, blues or otherwise, followed The Producers lead.

The Producers gave their last concert on New Years Eve 2001/2002 after undertaking a 6 month farewell tour of the UK, needless to say it was a complete sell out. The producers reformed in 2009 with a slightly different line-up (Harry and Dave still front the band ably assisted by Ray Drury on organ and piano and Biff Smith on the sticks and percussion).

Based in Paris, despite her youth, the Barcelona artist Cecilya Mestres has a long career in the world of music, being recognized as one of the most promising singers of her generation within blues, rhythm & blues and classic Rock 'n' roll. During these last years, she has toured a large part of Europe and Argentina; and since 2019 she develops her career in France. She made her debut at the age of 14 and during that period of time she sang and composed songs in various formations with heterogeneous musical styles.

Cecilya Mestres leads a rhythm & blues and rock 'n' roll "all-star" band with the support of guitarist Rodolphe Dumont, one of the most renowned musicians of the genre in France. Similarly, she has the invaluable collaboration of Sax Gordon who recorded the saxes from Boston (USA). The group Cecilya & The Candy Kings is also made up of Spanish musicians with whom they form a totally incendiary live combo.

Now they present the new album "Back in 1955", with a pure rock 'n' roll sound and original songs composed by Cecilya Mestres plus two cover versions; one of them being "Back In 1955", a single that gave its name to this album. Edited by Meseta Records, Cecilya & The Candy Kings have played in the best jazz clubs and venues in Paris such as Le Caveau de la Huchette, Sunset Sunside and Le Balajo.

They have defended their repertoire throughout France, Switzerland and Spain, performing at festivals such as the Disney Rock 'n' Roll Festival in Disneyland (Paris) or the Festival des Terrasses de Crans-Montana in Switzerland. Since 2020, Cecilya Mestres has been featured on billboards at major European festivals such as the American Tours Festival and the Béthune Retro Festival, among others.

Born in 1934, Alex Littlejohn was raised in Ferriday, Louisiana where he was childhood friends with Jerry Lee Lewis, Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart. As a teenager, he moved to Kansas City’s 18th and Vine district. Inspired by that thriving music scene, he learned to play bass, write songs, and sing the blues. In the process, he recorded a number of singles, starting in 1959, for various regional labels. He also worked with numerous famous bluesmen, including B.B. King. In 1996 he played the Blues Estafette in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Signing with Black Magic Records, he released the CD "Hot As A Coffee Pot". Returning to Europe for a three week tour in 2002, Alex decided to cut a greatest hits CD, "The Cream Of King Alex", covering his forty year plus career. Alex's rich vocals were complimented by his powerful band, The Untouchables, which over the years has included L.C. Gant and Robert Locke on drums, Bart Colliver on keyboards, Doug Hemphill and Tony Shaffer on guitar, Dana Smith on tenor saxophone and Steve Shoemaker on trombone and harmonica.

Sounding for all the world like a stack of old Duke and Peacock singles, Texas guitarist Hash Brown puts together an album with the old R&B-blues revues of the 1950s in mind. The concept works just fine, showcasing a trio of vocalists in front of a large horn-dominated band. Sam Myers is the best of the lot, blowing harp and singing with authority on "Sad and Lonesome." Darrell Nulisch contributes two fine tracks in "My Baby's Gone" and the jumping "I Sat and Cried."

Also aboard are what appears to be the final recordings of Texas legend Zuzu Bollin - a bit diminished in lung power, but still capable of bringing some heat on "Cry, Cry, Cry." Jeff Pitchell first made a name for himself at the youthful age of 15 after winning a 1981 Ovation Guitars contest for "Best Guitarist in Connecticut." Having been greatly influenced by "The Thrill Is Gone" by B.B. King, Pitchell became more adept at his instrument with each passing year. Performing in front of any crowd he could find, Pitchell honed his craft and was heavily influenced by guitarists such as Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. By age 28, he was voted "Best Blues Guitarist" in Metro Magazine, a regional publication.

In 1996, Pitchell formed his own band. Named after a Stevie Ray Vaughan tune, Jeff Pitchell & the Texas Flood appeared at the 1997 Bluestock in Memphis. That same year the band released its debut effort, Fat Cigars, on Premier Records. In 1999, the band released One Day Away which was soon followed by Face to Face.

Pitchell and his band played with or opened for B.B. King, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Joe Cocker, and Johnny Winter. In 2002, Pitchell signed to EMI and dropped the "Texas Flood" from his moniker. In August 2002, a collection of previous songs and three new tunes were released as Heavy Hitter. Brownie McGhee's death in 1996 was an enormous loss in the blues field. Although he had been semi-retired and suffering from stomach cancer, the guitarist was still the leading Piedmont-style bluesman on the planet, venerated worldwide for his prolific activities both on his own and with his longtime partner, blind harpist Sonny Terry. Together, McGhee and Terry worked for decades in an acoustic folk-blues bag, singing ancient ditties like "John Henry" and "Pick a Bale of Cotton" for appreciative audiences worldwide. But McGhee was capable of a great deal more. Throughout the immediate postwar era, he cut electric blues and R&B on the New York scene, even enjoying a huge R&B hit in 1948 with "My Fault" for Savoy (Hal "Cornbread" Singer handled tenor sax duties on the 78).

Walter Brown McGhee grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee. He contracted polio at the age of four, which left him with a serious limp and plenty of time away from school to practice the guitar chords that he'd learned from his father, Duff McGhee. Brownie's younger brother, Granville McGhee, was also a talented guitarist who later hit big with the romping "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee"; he earned his nickname, "Stick," by pushing his disabled sibling around in a small cart propelled by a stick.

A 1937 operation sponsored by the March of Dimes restored most of McGhee's mobility. Off he went as soon as he recovered, traveling and playing throughout the Southeast. His jaunts brought him into contact with washboard player George "Oh Red" (or "Bull City Red") Washington in 1940, who in turn introduced McGhee to talent scout J.B. Long. Long got him a recording contract with OKeh/Columbia in 1940; his debut session in Chicago produced a dozen tracks over two days.

Long's principal blues artist, Blind Boy Fuller, died in 1941, precipitating Okeh issuance of some of McGhee's early efforts under the sobriquet of Blind Boy Fuller No. 2. McGhee cut a moving tribute song, "Death of Blind Boy Fuller," shortly afterward. McGhee's third marathon session for OKeh in 1941 paired him for the first time on shellac with whooping harpist Terry for "Workingman's Blues."

The pair resettled in New York in 1942. They quickly got connected with the city's burgeoning folk music circuit, working with Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Leadbelly. After the end of World War II, McGhee began to record most prolifically, both with and without Terry, for a myriad of R&B labels: Savoy (where he cut "Robbie Doby Boogie" in 1948 and "New Baseball Boogie" the next year), Alert, London, Derby, Sittin' in With, and its Jax subsidiary in 1952, Jackson, Bobby Robinson's Red Robin logo (1953), Dot, and Harlem, before crossing over to the folk audience during the late '50s with Terry at his side. One of McGhee's last dates for Savoy in 1958 produced the remarkably contemporary "Living with the Blues," with Roy Gaines and Carl Lynch blasting away on lead guitars and a sound light years removed from the staid folk world.

McGhee and Terry were among the first blues artists to tour Europe during the '50s, and they ventured overseas often after that. Their plethora of late-'50s and early-'60s albums for Folkways, Choice, World Pacific, Bluesville, and Fantasy presented the duo in acoustic folk trappings only, their Piedmont-style musical interplay a constant (if gradually more predictable) delight. McGhee didn't limit his talents to concert settings. He appeared on Broadway for three years in a production of playwright Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1955, and later put in a stint in the Langston Hughes play Simply Heaven. Films (Angel Heart, Buck and the Preacher) and an episode of the TV sitcom Family Ties also benefited from his dignified presence. The wheels finally came off the partnership of McGhee and Terry during the mid-'70s. Toward the end, they preferred not to share a stage with one another (Terry would play with another guitarist, then McGhee would do a solo), let alone communicate. One of McGhee's final concert appearances came at the 1995 Chicago Blues Festival; his voice was a tad less robust than usual, but no less moving, and his rich, full-bodied acoustic guitar work cut through the cool evening air with alacrity. A nearly full Volition Live CD includes the best of Harlem Lake songs, recorded at the Culemborg Blues Festival on August 27, 2022 and Better Get Hit Festival on September 10, 2022. Six tracks are from the album "A Fool's Paradise Vol. 1 " from 2021.
Harlem Lake performs in different line-ups. So we hear the band on the present album, among other things, in a ten-piece line-up. Also included among the six cover songs is Barrelhouse's number "Beware" . Other foreign compositions include The Box Tops ' "The Letter" . Joe Cocker was particularly successful with his version of the classic.
Whether original compositions or cover songs, the mix is great fun.

The listening fun begins after the first notes of the opener "The River".
This piece sorts itself into the Blues Rock department. The number comes across with a great sound and already here one of the trademarks of the band becomes clear. A voluminous sound characterizes this song and Sonny Ray van den Berg refines his contribution with a great use of a bottleneck.

In the following "Beware" we experience the combo in full cast with the brass section, so to speak. Hammer! The line-up without the horns is already highly convincing, but what the group with the horns calls up is stunning. What's more, "Beware" is one of the funk numbers on the album. Excellent! Harlem Lake pulls on the handbrake on "Whiskey Drinking Woman." What is definitely preserved is the intensity. This song puts his stamp on Sonny Ray van den Berg with a beautifully relaxed solo. The rocking "Deaf & Blind" feels like the track is over, but we're only halfway there at this point.Jon Lord comes to mind. At just over seven minutes, this song is one of the longest on "Volition Live".

In relation to the length of the songs, we also dedicate to "Please Watch My Bag". This piece impresses with dynamic fluctuations that reach into the balladesque area and once again guitarist Sonny Ray van den Berg shows himself to be downright inventive in his solo fantasies. It's a pleasure to listen to him on his own, subtly framed by drums, bass and keyboards.
In this context the singer Janne Timmer has to be mentioned. Brilliant, how the blues flows through her veins and shapes her vocal cords. Excellent! The rhythm section with bassist Kjelt Ostendorf and Benjamin Torbijn on drums is also great. Both thumps up!

"That's How Strong My Love Is" scratches the nine-minute mark. Only with a little organ accompaniment is Janne Timmer's singing, embedded by a two-piece choir, in the foreground. Goosebumps are the order of the day when the front woman gives in to her emotions and gives everything between a rough voice and gospel. You almost know where the song title comes from. Highlights!

You only have to listen to "The Letter" with its rousing horns and it becomes clear how competently Harlem Lake oscillates between closeness to the original and their own handwriting. The wind solos alone are reason enough to listen to this piece more often. In general, every new run of the album is worthwhile.

"Volition Live" shows Harlem Lake's blues/blues rock at a very high level.

End of 2021. There was the island. There was our music. Wind and waves and the blues. And - once again - an unexpected amount of time...
The idea was born to spend a few days on the wonderful North Sea island of Spiekeroog to take pictures. The four of us know this place very well from regular appearances at the jazz festival there, for example, and it quickly became clear to us that we would find conditions here that couldn't be better: peace, no distractions and inspiration from the incomparable charisma of this pretty island and its people.
So we were able to use the Kogge, the event hall there, for the sound recordings for a few days. The result is a mixture of new titles, original compositions and songs that we have had in our repertoire for a long time. It's great to be able to present our music now.
Many thanks at this point to Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH and especially Ruben Franz - without him the recordings would not have been possible.

A cavalcade of blues women - Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Memphis Minnie, and Sister Rosetta Tharp - ruled the early days of radio and the record business while barnstorming across the country as band leaders performing their own material and popular favorites. Molding herself in their image Baltimore chanteuse Gayle Weaver Harrod fronted several bands for over a decade before bringing together some of the best musical talent in the Mid-Atlantic blues scene to form The Gayle Harrod Band.

In the summer of 2022, along with her co writers and band mates, guitarist Stan Turk, and drummer Chuck Ferrell, Harrod recorded her debut album Temptation, at 38 North Studios, with producer, Buddy Speir, and engineer, Sean Russell. Guest performers include guitarists Jonathan Sloane, Sol Roots, and Bobby Thompson; bassist Christopher Brown; and Brian Simms on piano and organ. Producer Buddy Speir contributes guitar, slide, organ, and Wurlitzer. The all-star background vocals are courtesy of Mary Ann Redmond, Dusty Rose, and The Voices of Faith of the First Baptist Church of Baltimore Choir. Also featured is Rachelle Danto on harmonica and The Beltway Horns: Greg Boyer on trombone, Brad Clements on trumpet, and Brent Birckhead on tenor sax.

The rollicking “Sweet Memphis Man” and its snappy dance hall beat opens the set, and if you have ever spent a night on Beale Street, you’ll know just what Harrod is talking about. The full ensemble shines on the powerful call to arms “Come On People,” with Harrod urging us all to “treat each other like sisters and brothers.” The bump and grind blues, “Baby We’re Through,” finds her scornful vocals backed up by a bevy of gritty guitars and heavy drums. Harrod takes us to the mojo triangle for the classic tale of the struggle between angels and devils for the title track “Temptation.” The tale of a clandestine love affair, “In The Deep Dark Night,” swings with second line flair, and the horns pop and B3 organ soars as Harrod takes us to church on the lively gospel-infused two beat “Bring Me Along.”

You can almost hear the crickets chirping and the frogs croaking in the distance on the bittersweet acoustic back porch Delta Blues “Waiting In The Shadows.” The anthem of self-determination, “Break,” has a 60’s girl group vibe that contrasts with its heady subtext. Harrod takes a stand on the driving rocker, “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” and gets sentimental on the tender Americana ballad, “The In Between,” that features fine slide guitar work. Harrod takes us on a philosophical and musical journey during the complex epic “God Laughed,” then closes the album with heartfelt advice to a lost loved one on the spacious ballad “Beautiful Friend.” ~Rick J Bowen

In late 1961, John Lee Hooker stepped into a Chicago studio for a single-day session with Motown's tight, swinging house band—which by then had propelled hits by Stevie Wonder, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye—and went electric. The menacing bluesman, who had established his brand as a bad-ass with a bad, if occasionally regretful, attitude, had been releasing country blues records for more than a decade, the kind that showcased his ability to wrestle with his psyche and channel those emotions through a helpless acoustic guitar and barked-out mumble of a voice. Armed with the outfit that became the Funk Brothers (guitarist Larry Veeder, bassist James Jamerson, keyboardist Joe Hunter and drummer Benny Benjamin), Hooker banged out eleven hardened, gripping electric blues songs that came out in 1962 as Burnin'. Those tracks were echoed in Bob Dylan's similar electric turn three years later and their spirit resonated through the proto-metal of Cream and Led Zeppelin.

How scary is Hooker on Burnin'? The first verse of the first song, "Boom Boom," opens with him cracking four vocal gunshots—"boom boom boom boom"––and declaring, "I'm gonna shoot you down/ Right off your feet/ Take you home with me/ Put you in my house." Unless his shots are metaphors for Cupid's arrows, the "boom boom boom boom" that ends the verse connotes something much darker. Creepy? Upsetting? That's Hooker all over Craft Recordings' expanded and newly remastered version of Burnin', which also includes an alternate take of "Thelma" and both the stereo and the mono versions of the album's original eleven tracks. Granted, Hooker does reveal a more vulnerable side from time to time ("Lost a Good Girl," "Let's Make It"). But as anyone who's binged true crime shows knows, when a man says, "Now look, buddy/ Keep your hands down/ To yourself/ 'Cause she's all mine/ All my property," as Hooker does on "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," someone's going to be in jail by sunrise and nobody's hitting the hay without some serious blues.

They regularly sold out venues around the country and were among the first to feature an acoustic set in their show which led to Theatre and Art Centre bookings nationwide, the whole acoustic set became almost de rigueur and every band, blues or otherwise, followed The Producers lead.

The Producers gave their last concert on New Years Eve 2001/2002 after undertaking a 6 month farewell tour of the UK, needless to say it was a complete sell out. Jeff Pitchell first made a name for himself at the youthful age of 15 after winning a 1981 Ovation Guitars contest for "Best Guitarist in Connecticut." Having been greatly influenced by "The Thrill Is Gone" by B.B. King, Pitchell became more adept at his instrument with each passing year. Performing in front of any crowd he could find, Pitchell honed his craft and was heavily influenced by guitarists such as Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. By age 28, he was voted "Best Blues Guitarist" in Metro Magazine, a regional publication.

In 1996, Pitchell formed his own band. Named after a Stevie Ray Vaughan tune, Jeff Pitchell & the Texas Flood appeared at the 1997 Bluestock in Memphis. That same year the band released its debut effort, Fat Cigars, on Premier Records. In 1999, the band released One Day Away which was soon followed by Face to Face.

Pitchell and his band played with or opened for B.B. King, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Joe Cocker, and Johnny Winter. In 2002, Pitchell signed to EMI and dropped the "Texas Flood" from his moniker. In August 2002, a collection of previous songs and three new tunes were released as Heavy Hitter. There's nothing particularly blue about Al Copley's blues - not that there's anything wrong with that. The point of Jump On It is to party, no matter what the tempo. A snappy horn section jabs the rhythm players on classic jump tunes like "Hoy Hoy Hoy" and "I Ain't Gonna Do It," a re-creation of Jerry Lee Lewis's manic crash through "Great Balls of Fire," a medium-tempo sashay over Fats Domino piano triplets on "Someday," a smoky Mose Allison groove on "Stranger in My Hometown," a sly, risqué reading of "The Big Ten Inch Record," and a fresh arrangement of the ultimate good-time track, "Louie Louie."

On each cut, Copley sings with a smile on his face, his voice husky and warm, his phrasing impeccably idiomatic. His piano never misses the mark either, from rumbling two-fisted tremolos to last-call, upper-register tinkles. None of it breaks new ground, nor is it deep emotionally; aside from one brief reflection on hate during a pause toward the end of "Send Me Someone to Love," he pretty much keeps his entertainer hat on throughout the whole album. Long John Baldry came of age as a singer during the British blues boom, and it's obvious that his love of the music hasn't left him. As he explains in the interview track at the end, Leadbelly was his first musical inspiration, and here he has his chance to pay homage to the man. In his sixties at the time of this recording, Baldry's voice has improved with age, deepening a little and sounding more gravelly - just perfect for the grittiness of Leadbelly's songs, which ran the gamut from blues to folk, gospel, and beyond.

It's an intelligent selection, ignoring the obvious "Goodnight Irene" and "In the Pines," while keeping defining moments like "Rock Island Line" (the tune that launched skiffle in England), "Birmingham Jail," and "We're in the Same Boat Brother" - it's remarkable just how familiar so much of the material is. The version of "Gallows Pole" (much better known for its subsequent incarnation as a Led Zeppelin piece) roars with power and urgency, "Lining Track" and "John Hardy" (whose unusual arrangement centers around pump organ) are definitive railroad songs, while the hymns "Mary Don't You Weep" and "We Shall Walk Through the Valley," though springing from an older well, were very much a part of the Huddie Leadbetter repertoire.

There's even a children's song, "On a Christmas Day," showing yet another facet of the big man. Add in an interview with Alan Lomax, the folklorist who discovered Leadbelly and helped his career, and you have something that stands as more than a tribute, but a full portrait of a seminal American artist. /Chris Nickson, AllMusic

A Brief History: Band Leader Ernie Pinata was a blues lover and collector. While in college, he created a band to perform for credit, an anthology of the evolution of the blues from it’s birth in field hollers to it’s electrified form in the big cities like Chicago.

The band started by playing the clubs in Oakland – Esther’s Orbit Room and The Continental Club, and Mandrake’s and The New Orleans House in Berkeley. Around this time, Lowell Fulson sat-in with the DELTA WIRES at the New Orleans House in Berkeley and Ernie sat-in with the Freddie King Band at Mandrakes in Berkeley. This was followed by a performance with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells at Keystone Berkeley. The Delta Wires then began to open shows for these blues greats, and continued to grow as musicians and as a band. The DELTA WIRES name was derived from the image of a band playing a high-energy electrified musical style born in the field hollers of the Mississippi Delta which evolved into the blues and ultimately led to the migration to Chicago of the Delta bluesmen. What began as a college project and anthology of blues music from the Mississippi Delta to the South Side of Chicago, inevitably evolved into a band which has become known for its originality, versatility, and crisp, tight, exciting sound.

Lewis began recording on the Vocalion label in 1927. His stamping ground - despite the fact he had lost a leg - was in and around the Memphis scene, such as Pee Wee Saloon near his home on Beale Street, with a day job as a street-sweeper until his retirement in 1966. In 1972 he was part of the renowned Memphis Blues Caravan, along with artists such as Bukka White, Sleepy John Estes & Sam Chatmon. He twice opened for The Rolling Stones and even acquired a profile in Playboy magazine. He died of heart-failure aged 82, shortly after contracting pneumonia, and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, South Memphis.

As a child Dyers' father, also a musician, turned him on to the music of the 60's and 70's. The artists that spoke to him the most were the blues-based rockers. especially the early Jeff Beck records featuring Rod Stewart. This instilled in him the importance of the blues as the key foundation of the music he was drawn to.

What surely separates Dyer from other blues rockers is his exceptional soulful voice, tasteful guitar playing, and strong writing ability. Davis is a natural performer with the charisma and chops to entertain any audience, either solo or with his high energy trio. In late 2021, Dyers long-time supporter, producer/engineer, Billy Chapin (Don Henley. Sister Hazel), reached out to award-winning producer, WildRoots Records Stephen Dees to consider co-producing and co-writing with them. After a couple of sessions Dees was completely won over by Dyers' talent and engaging personality. So much so that Stephen invited Dyer to perform on the WildRoots latest release "WildRoots Sessions Volume 2".Dyer delivers a stunning vocal on the track "The Bad Seed", one of the top tracks off the album.

A unique talent, Joe Louis Walker has never been comfortable restricting himself to one style the music for long, delivering everything from fiery blues-rock to mellow acoustic and everything in between. And he shifts gears frequently on this tasty CD, a highly personal, thought-provoking riff on themes that affect us all.

A six-time Blues Music Award winner with about three dozen albums to his credit, Walker is no stranger to pushing boundaries. While his most recent previous release, Eclectic Electric on Cleopatra, was an excursion in contemporary and soul-blues stylings, this one travels through the emotional wasteland left in our paths after COVID.

It’s a never-boring, silky-smooth package tied with a bow thanks to the 73-year-old San Francisco native’s exceptional guitar skills along with instantly recognizable vocal chops that infuse deep feeling in every measure of every song.

Eric Corne and Joe split writing duties (EC wrote 4, JLW wrote 5 and 1 co-write) on this one, which were captured at The Building in Marlboro, N.Y., not far from JLW’s adopted home in the Hudson River Valley. It was produced by Eric Corne, the mastermind who’s been in the studio with Sugaray Rayford, Walter Trout and John Mayall in recent years. Eric contributed the other tune, shares credit on another and also adds second guitar, percussion and backing vocals.

Walker plays electric, slide and nylon-string guitars throughout and contributes a little harmonica in a lineup that includes Scott Milici on keyboards, Geoff Murfitt on bass, John Medeiros Jr. on drums. They’re augmented by Eddie Jackson on bongos, Eric Gorfain on violin, Mark Pender on trumpet, David Ralicke on sax and Gia Ciambotti does background vocals.

“The Weight of the World,” which opens, is a funky slow-blues shuffle that describes how many of us feel today, living on the other side of the pandemic and finally “adjourned” from isolation. Despite the seeming victory, however, he observes that we’re still burdened with the aftereffects and he wonders whether we’ll learn from our past mistakes or “get in line for the last rotation” and “all burn until we finally adjourn.”

The pace quickens and a horn flourish brightens the open of “Is It a Matter of Time?” It swings atop a heavy two-four beat but expresses exasperation as he wonders if he’ll ever get to enjoy the fruits of he’s been promised in life, finally stating: “Time will tell, I’ve been told. But I don’t know if anybody knows what the future will hold.”

It yields to “Hello, It’s the Blues,” which opens as a quiet ballad with gospel overtones but slowly increases in pace and intensity. A gentle offering that allows the artform to speak its mind, it assures fans that it will always be a source of comfort no matter how tearful and dark the night. Things heat up via “Waking Up the Dead,” which opens with a second-line drumbeat, describes an encounter with the Devil and warns about his tricks, which – if you aren’t careful — will make hopes and dreams slip through your fingers and run down the drain.

The poignant “Don’t Walk Out That Door,” is up next with JLW announcing that if his lady starts packing, he’ll be the one running from their home, and he promises to emulate Daniel in the lion’s den in his efforts to right any wrongs. The funkified “Count Your Chickens” keeps the heat on high as the singer rebuffs an adversary who’s trying to mess with him before giving way “Blue Mirror,” an uptempo rocker that will have you bopping throughout.

“Root Down,” a keyboard- and harp-driven pleaser, finds Joe acknowledging that he’s paying the price for a life lived without planning for the future. It gives way to the stop-time “Bed of Roses,” about a farewell letter discovered under a pillow, before the jazzy closer, “You Got Me Whipped,” announces finally ready to accede to all of his lady’s demands to remain at her side.

One listen to this incisive treatise and you’ll agree with jazz great Herbie Hancock who calls Joe Louis Walker a national treasure. This just might be his best album ever – and that’s saying something! ~Marty Gunther

Sadly, we lost Kim Simmonds just this past December, but he lives on thanks to Quarto Valley Records who has released Blues All Around, his final album with his legendary blues rock band, Savoy Brown.

The new album from one of the longest running blues rock bands in existence follows Savoy Brown’s critically acclaimed 2022 album, Ain’t Done Yet. Shortly after the new album was completed, Savoy Brown founder, guitarist/ singer/songwriter Kim Simmonds lost his hard-fought battle with cancer on December 13th, just a week after turning 75. While recuperating from his initial cancer treatments, Simmonds had begun work on the new album that was to become Blues All Around.

“The new album continues the approach I’ve been taking with the band this past decade,” said Simmonds, who formed the band in 1965 in London, England. “The big difference with the new album is the multi-layer approach I took to recording the guitar parts. It’s all blues-based rock music. I try to find new and progressive ways to write and play the music I’ve loved since I was a young teenager.”

Blues All Around showcases Kim Simmonds’ most-inspired guitar work and expressive vocals, his illness during the recording sessions leading him to play a great deal more slide guitar than on previous albums.

“I enjoyed making this album perhaps because I approached the recording in a different manner from the usual ‘live in the studio’ format I’ve always used,” Simmonds says in the album liner notes. “Here’s how it went. My tracks, guitar, vocal, etc., were laid down first. Pat and Garnet then added bass, drums and percussion and the whole process worked beautifully. They clinched the deal using my tracks as a guide. Brilliant work. They’re heaven sent. The concept wasn’t my brainchild. Studio owner and engineer Ron Keck suggested the approach to make things easier, due to my failing health and I’m forever grateful. John Shelmet was another angel in the preparation stages. He suggested I play slide guitar when the neuropathy affecting my fingers made single string playing difficult. Good idea!! My wife Debbie was a great help as well in the mixing stage. She added an extra set of ears and a source of helpful suggestions as we moved along … often at lightning pace. You have to be quick on your feet in the recording of an album. Things not working have to be put aside and new ideas have to be decided upon quickly so the creative forces don’t grind to a halt. I do have a quick mind which helps …. and sometimes hinders! I do push events forward rapidly. Life is energy. Music is energy. Enjoy listening to this set of energetic blues/rock songs as much as I’ve enjoyed making it.”

Longtime fan and critic favorites, Savoy Brown birthed in London 57 years ago and have been based in upstate New York for many years. Kim Simmonds had been the group’s guiding hand from the first singles released in 1966 through this newest effort, Savoy Brown’s 42nd album. On the new record, Simmonds (guitar, harmonica, organ, and vocals) was once again joined by his long-running bandmates Pat DeSalvo (bass) and Garnet Grimm (drums/percussion).

RIP Kim, thanks for all the music you left us.
