No doubt about it, even white boys can play the blues. The Ides of May do it all the way from the eastern part of Holland, live sober but honest and straight forward. They honour the great classical blues players of whom they have several on their live repertoire.

The Ides of May include an uncompromised style and directness in their blues. Their collective experience on this recording, and the band's progression takes a step further here. At hand, is a well balanced album that comes from a love for the music and recreates the energy and emotion seen at their live performances. The material is mostly original, and well supported by a tight unit (such as only comes from years of playing together). If you are into a tough, electrified blues style, then this one is for you. The originals (which represent most of the songs) on this CD are gems, and were culled from a list of over 40 self-penned songs.

The adjective “eclectic” gets tossed around liberally when describing those who dip their musical toes into a variety of genres. But it’s perfect for Jake Shimabukuro. Not only does the Hawaiian native shift effortlessly between styles as radically dissimilar as rock, classical, world music, jazz, bluegrass, country, funk, pop and folk, but he accomplishes that brandishing his trusty four-string ukulele. Few if any another musicians have covered Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Disney tunes, Leonard Cohen, New Order and Bach with the same effortless aplomb. Additionally, other high profile names have flocked to him. Who else has recorded with Cyndi Lauper, Yo-Yo Ma, Billy Strings and Bette Midler?

So it comes as little wonder that Shimabukuro finally wades into blues with ‘Blues Experience,’ one of the few areas he hasn’t spent time in. Fellow Hawaii resident and, oh yeah, world famous drummer, Mick Fleetwood provides some marquee star power above the album’s title and helps the uke expert navigate a field he knows about as well as any other percussive player. It’s nearly impossible to tell that Shimabukuro is not slinging a typical six-string on the majority of these ten tracks. Unlike most ukulele practitioners, he plugs into an amp, using audio enhancements to yield a full guitar sound. On the opening “’Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers,” where he grabs Jeff Beck’s arrangement and invites the disc’s lone guest, Sonny Landreth, to add slide, few would imagine he’s working with just four strings. His solo bobs and weaves around Stevie Wonder’s melody with Beck’s casual grace.

Shimabukuro is no stranger to instrumental interpretations (his major breakthrough was a unique version of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”), and the eight others, with one original, fit that established pattern. He tackles Gary Moore’s signature “Still Got the Blues,” squeezing out strong, tensile notes you’d think would be difficult from his modest instrument. Elsewhere Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” gets a surprisingly powerful handling complete with reverb and strangulated notes similar to what Young might play, urged on by Fleetwood’s drum prowess.

The approach even goes psychedelic on Muddy Waters’ standard “Rollin’ N Tumblin’.” Shimabukuro cranks up the echo and solos like Clapton in Cream as Fleetwood thumps along resulting in one of the disc’s more frantic, even intense, offerings. Those expecting an easy listening atmosphere based on some of Jake’s prior music will be surprised yet riveted by his searing sonic attack. The tempo drops for the set’s lone original, a standard Chicago shuffle titled “Kula Blues.” It’s a pleasant performance that starts predictably then ramps up the energy. Fleetwood’s sturdy backbeat is reminiscent of his band’s old deep blues days. You can’t go wrong covering Procol Harum’s classic “Whiter Shade of Pale.” With the ukulele taking the lead vocal melody, it yields an agreeable result displaying Shimabukuros’ shredding talents.

Mick also nods to his past. Little Willie John’s “Need Your Love So Bad,” a hit for Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green years, reveals a moody treatment featuring piano from Michael Grande. The closing, dreamy nod to “Songbird” pays tribute to Fleetwood’s longtime band mate Christine McVie with a touching, somewhat ominous approach that’s genuine and respectful. It closes the impressive ‘Blues Experience’ with the class, sophistication and diversity Jake Shimabukuro has always exhibited by adding another notch to his ever expanding stylistic belt. /Hal Horowitz, Rock & Blues Muse

A southern rock band, Alligator Stew was formed in 2000 and released their first album "Alligator Stew." With that album, the band had success in signing a deal with Halycon Music & Sony in Germany for European Distribution, and immediately released the import version of the debut self titled album, under the title "A FIRST TASTE.. In 2003 after doing various shows with such class acts as LYNYRD SKYNRD, the band released "Welcome To Monticello…Live!", in where else, Monticello, Indiana…..Home of their bass player Doug Richardson, and singer Gary Jeffries. These 3 albums are available worldwide. During 2006, GAC-TV featured Alligator Stew's video, "Blood Money"on their "EDGE OF COUNTRY" show during the past summer, and rumours are that CMT has interests in airing the same video, during their specialty show, which highlights up and coming country rock and even some edgier country rock bands on it. Watch and see…. The band is currently putting together new material for a new album out in late 2006, early 2007. Look for upcoming songs from the next album featured in various places.

Alligator Jackson was an ensemble rock project that never materialized into a "true band." There were incarnations of this project that performed original classic rock and country. The sessions released on this album were drenched in southern fried rock. For these recordings made between 2005 and 2009, Alligator Jackson selected Dave Scarboro to be the lead vocalist on the songs The Gator wrote. Alligator joined Scarboro on guitars. TJ Dawg was the drummer and RJ Gibson on bass. The songs were recorded where good southern rock must be recorded … in the South. East Craft Studios in Vass, North Carolina is where the songs were burned onto tape. Scarboro produced and mixed them.

Alligator Jackson signed with 9 Lives Records out of Kentucky. Although there were plans for a tour, the band never played a show. These songs received airplay on select stations in several countries. To this day, Alligator Jackson remains southern rock's best kept secret. Now, sit back and discover the southern rock band that never really was and enjoy the southern bite of Alligator Jackson.

The powerful, pounding boogie made famous by Canned Heat returns from the orthodox continuators of the style, this group of Belgian musicians called Boogie Workers. After their successful first CD, which was very well received by Belgian blues specialists, the Boogie Workers had the opportunity to share the stage with some of their American heroes for whom they always had great admiration, such as Bernard Allison, Studebaker John and Little Arthur Duncan. Boogie Workers are drums, bass, two guitars, vocals and a harmonica player. The album consists of eleven songs, all except one composed by singer and guitarist Walter Otte.

Benny Turner, vocalist/bassist/guitarist/songwriter, is one of the last links to the original bluesmen. The younger brother of Freddie King, Turner celebrates his 85th birthday and the tenth anniversary for the label for which he was the catalyst, NOLA Blue. We now have the long-awaited BT, perhaps the crowning achievement of his storied career. Besides being the bassist in his brother’s band, Turner played with blues great Mighty Joe Young, was the bandleader for the “Blues Queen of New Orleans” Marva Wright, and worked with gospel greats Otis Clay, Dee Clark and the Soul Stirrers. Because he lived in Chicago from 1950 to 1990, he is one of the few living bluesmen, along with Bobby Rush and Buddy Guy, who knew greats such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed and others. He and blues great Luther Allison were once roommates. Turner shares his stories in his award-winning 2017 autobiography, Survivor – The Benny Turner Story.

Like the book, BT is a walk down memory lane as Turner revisits songs from these blues and gospel luminaries while adding three originals. The album started in 2018 at FAME in Muscle Shoals, then continued with sessions in New Orleans, and was completed this past August in Columbia, PA. BT was put on hold so that Turner could work with his friend Cash McCall’s Going Back Home pre-Covid. He wanted to honor his friend who had a terminal illness. Beyond that Turner dealt with the destruction of his New Orleans home due to Hurricane Ida that, along with other events, prompted his move to the Keystone state. Turner produced BT along with guitarist Bobby Gentilo who co-produced three tracks and plays guitar on the record in both studios. Prominent guests include Billy Davis (last original member of Hank Ballard’s Midnighters Band), Harrell “Young Roll” Davenport, and Sax Gordon.

These ten songs mirror Turner’s eclectic career. He may not be the blues shouter of his surname’s sake Big “Joe” Turner, but he had the immortal Blues Shouter in mind with the opening vintage ‘50s R&B of “Bump Miss Susie.” Compared to almost anyone else out there today from the ‘old school’, Benny is a force-of-nature vocalist on the far too often covered “Going Down Slow.” This is a favorite in Benny’s live shows as he turns it into a gospel tune at the end with his refrains of “Pray for Me” which take on chilling effect as he prances the stage and exhorts the audience in those three words. This one benefits from the piano of Muscle Shoals great Clayton Ivey and harmonica. Turner honors West Coast great with a funky version of “The Walk” which features Sax Gordon. Listen closely to Turner’s bass playing, so forceful and at times creative that he’s “The Jaco Pastorius” of blues bassists.

His signature melding of gospel and blues is evident on the B-side of Dee Clark’s 1958 hit “Nobody But You” with this rendition of “That’s When I Call on You,” replete with Ivey’s B3 and background vocalists. He then turns to obscure song of Muddy Waters with “Born in This Time,” honoring the historical foundation of the blues. Turner calls it “The Ballad of a Slave,” pouring out his heartfelt vocals. He later delivers his own original for blues icon Jimmy Reed in the witty shuffle “Drunk.” Two other tributes are here. He sings both lead and backgrounds on “Finger Poppin’ Time,” inviting Billy Davis to play guitar in a nod to both Davis and Davis’s bandleader, Hank Ballard. Turner salutes his days in New Orleans in a tribute to Big Chief Bo Dollis, inviting Marva Wright to assist in background vocals on “Smoke My Peace Pipe (Smoke It Right).” His bassline is strikingly dominant among a group of eight musicians and singers.

The final two Turner originals cap this versatile outing. Turner plays guitar back porch style, leading a backing quartet through the fully instrumental “Sleepy Time in the Barnyard,” a throwback to his days as a teenage growing up in Gilmer, TX. His closing “Who Sang It First” reminds us of the originators of America’s indigenous art form, the blues. Franklin Hovington (January 9, 1919 – June 21, 1982), also known as Guitar Frank, was an American blues musician. He played the guitar and banjo and sang in the Piedmont blues style. He lived in the vicinity of Frederica, Delaware. Hovington was born in Reading, Pennsylvania. On a tip from the folklorist Peter B. Lowry, he was recorded by Dick Spottswood and Bruce Bastin, with an album released on Flyright Records in the UK (available on CD) and on Rounder Records in the US. Selections were recorded by Axel Küstner and Siggi Christmann for German release, most recently issued by Evidence Records in the US.

He disliked travel and did not play away from his Delaware home, afraid that he would lose his welfare support payments, and so did not get the publicity from music festival appearances that his talent deserved.

Allen Toussaint, a multifaceted musician who brought the traditional rhythmic sound of New Orleans into the popular music of the 1960s and 1970s, writing and producing hit songs for performers as varied as Herb Alpert, Patti LaBelle and Glen Campbell, died Nov. 10 at a hotel in Madrid. He was 77. He collapsed hours after a performance Monday night in Madrid, his son, Clarence “Reginald” Toussaint, said. The cause of death was a heart attack.

Mr. Toussaint (pronounced too-SAHNT) had been a powerful force in New Orleans music since the 1950s, recording his first album when he was 20. He was an outstanding singer and pianist, but for years he put his own career as a performer aside as he wrote and produced a staggering number of hit songs for others. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 as a “non-performer.”

Early in his career, Mr. Toussaint wrote, produced and played piano on Ernie K-Doe's "Mother-in-Law," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart in 1961. His instrumental tunes "Java" and "Whipped Cream" topped the charts in the mid-1960s for trumpeters Al Hirt and Herb Alpert, respectively.Mr. Toussaint wrote and produced "Working in a Coal Mine," a 1966 hit for rhythm-and-blues singer Lee Dorsey that was later recorded by the Judds and Devo. Mr. Toussaint produced Dr. John's funk anthem "Right Place, Wrong Time" (1973) and "Lady Marmalade," a No. 1 disco hit in 1975 for the trio known as Labelle, led by singer Patti LaBelle. He wrote the song "Southern Nights," which hit No. 1 for Campbell in 1977.

The Pointer Sisters' 1973 hit, "Yes We Can Can," was written by Mr. Toussaint, and his tune "Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley" landed on the charts in a 1974 version by British rocker Robert Palmer. Other songs by Mr. Toussaint were recorded by the Rolling Stones, Warren Zevon and Bonnie Raitt. “Toussaint is truly an underappreciated, virtually undiscovered gem,” music critic Joel Selvin wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle in 2006. “He has long been a national treasure, just unknown outside New Orleans and record business circles.” Mr. Toussaint often appeared at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, but he didn't emerge fully on the national stage until after Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home and studio in 2005. He then recorded a ­Grammy-nominated album with Elvis Costello, "The River in Reverse," which included several of Mr. Toussaint's songs, such as "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?"

“We may seem happy, like everything’s all right,” Mr. Toussaint sang in his light, clear tenor. “But deep down inside, we’re covering up the pain. It’s an old thing, it’s a soul thing, but it’s a real thing. Pray tell, what’s going to happen to brother?” The song, written years earlier, took on added meaning after Mr. Toussaint was forced out of his home by Katrina. “I intended to ride it out as I have every storm of my life,” he told the New York Times in 2006. “I knew it would be bigger and badder, but hurricanes are my familiar archenemies

Misty Blues and lead singer, Gina Coleman, celebrate 25 years of composing and performing original blues with hints of jazz, funk, soul and tent revival gospel. Misty Blues has recorded with Charles Neville, Joe Louis Walker, Eric Gales, Justin Johnson, Kat Riggins, Early Times and Matt Cusson. They have also opened for traditional & contemporary blues artists like Tab Benoit, John Primer, Roomful Of Blues, Albert Cummings and Michael Powers.

In 2019 the band became a finalist in the International Blues Challenge. ‘I’m Too Old For Games: A Live Tribute To Odetta’ is the band’s 16th album, their third live album, second tribute album and second acoustic album.

A passion project that has been brewing since the mid-1990s for the lead singer of Misty Blues, Gina Coleman, whose encounter with the legendary Odetta at the Bottomline club in New York City as a guest of Arlo Guthrie left a powerful impression and was a seminal moment in her career.

That inspiration came full circle in the form of a live recorded album in May of 2023, “Tell Me Who You Are: A Live Tribute To Odetta.”. That album took residence as the #1 Traditional Folk Album on the Roots Music Report chart for 24 consecutive weeks. Even with that success, Gina was troubled by the understanding that it was one of the first full album tributes to the Queen of American Folk and was concerned about Odetta’s body of work slipping into obscurity.

Given that concern, Gina and the band decided to embark on a 2nd live tribute album, “I’m Too Old For Games,” which is being released a year after their first tribute album to Odetta, and on the heels of Misty Blues’ most recent original album “Silver Lining” in their 25th Anniversary year.

Originally taking its main inspiration and song material from the Hill Country Blues of Mississippi, US, Fried Okra from Copenhagen, Denmark, now write their own songs, and consider themselves a blues, roots, rock, folk, americana (and you name it) -band.

Fried Okra Band with and without the “the” has existed since around 2006. Since 2016 the band has been the trio it is today – Thomas Crawfurd(drums, percussion, backing vocals), Anders Wallin(bass, backing vocals), Morten Lunn(lead vocals, guitar, diddley bo) – and the name’s been Fried Okra.

The name:
People who lives in or travelled the state of Louisiana or the rest of the south in the US will know where the name Fried Okra derives from – namely the common dish Fried Okra. It is what is says – the small, green vegetable okra covered in a cornmeal based batter and then deep-fried in oil(try It!).

However, the name does not mean that Fried Okra plays a Louisiana type of music like Cajun or Zydeco. Rather the band chose the name to refer to Afro-American culture of the South in general.

The list of current influences ranging from Lucinda Williams to T Model Ford goes to show that while the music of Fried Okra is heavily bluesy it is not straight blues. The aim is not to copy any of the artists, that Fried Okra claims as influences but rather to mix it together with something of your own – “so it smells familiar while still spiced with something indefinable and different” as Danish reviewer Mads Kornum from the web magazine Side 33 wrote in a live review.

The band has been nominated 4 times. Three out of six albums have been nominated for Danish Blues Album of The Year and in 2021 Fried Okra was also nominated for The Blues Live Award.

The vibrant Barcelona-based soul and rhythm and blues group Koko-Jean & The Tonics are back with their new single 'Love Child', the title track to their highly anticipated second album, which will be released this autumn.

Alfie Smith is a prolific songwriter, an accomplished performer and talented multi-instrumentalist. Alfie Smith releases his eighth album, Every Rome Needs A Nero, and that is excellent news for blues lovers. The Hamilton-based troubadour is a popular and crowd-pleasing fixture on the Ontario’s blues / folk / roots festivals and club circuit, but it has been a full decade since his last release, Come On In My Kitchen, a duo record with his wife, Nicole Christian. His return to the recording arena with Every Rome Needs A Nero finds Alfie at the height of his creative powers. He is a triple threat: a guitar virtuoso fluent on slide and vintage National and resonator instruments, an eloquent songwriter in the classic blues tradition, and a powerful singer with a voice to match his formidable physical presence. That deep voice sounds like it has been dredged from the depths of the muddy Mississippi River. It is rich and earthy, and capable of expressing tenderness, melancholy, joy, and, in the case of the new album’s title track, righteous anger.

Alfie Smith’s recording career now spans more than a quarter century, beginning with his 1998 debut, Alfred John Smith. Subsequent albums were mostly self-released, with a couple coming out on noted Kitchener independent roots label Busted Flat. Smith’s multiple talents have been recognized by both The Hamilton Music Awards, which nominated him 12 times, in the Best Male Vocalist and Best Guitarist categories, and the Toronto Blues Society, who selected him to represent them at the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2010. The San Francisco based Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra is the 2007 brainchild of guitarist/songwriter Anthony Paule. Inspired by authentic Blues recordings of the ’60s and ’70s, this dramatic horn driven powerhouse took shape. Known for having top tier singers like Frany Bey and Wee Willie Walker, the Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra invites newest member, vocalist Willy Jordan to the stage. Having worked with Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio, Willy’s commanding vocals and unpretentious stage presence give audiences an honest fresh and heartfelt experience. Past recordings have garnered the Anthony Paul Orchestra seventeen Blues Music Award nominations. This new album is their sixth for Blue Dot Records. The Orchestra has their own captivating sound but comparisons can be made to Bobby “Blue” Bland, Bobby Womack, Otis Redding, Tyrone Davis and Al Green.

Produced by Anthony Paule, his wife Christine Vitale, Larry Batiste, and Willy Jordan most songs are written by them in various combinations. The album opens with a great vocal from Jordan with a guitar solo by Paule; throughout the album Endre Tarcy plays bass, while Kevin Hayes plays drums. Also included through the album is the four-piece horn section of Derek James, trombone; Ethan Pires, trumpet; Charles McNeal, tenor saxophone; and Bob Sudduth, baritone saxophone. Also featured through the recording are backing vocalists Omega Rae, and Nona Brown.

The album kicks off with the chilling “You Ain’t Old Til You Cold”. The title track “What Are You Waiting For? follows; the song possesses a familiarity that makes it friendly and relatable. “One Way” includes Jordan crooning the lyric “I’m gonna’ buy you a ticket, and make it one-way”. ” You’re Somebody Else’s Baby Too” includes Lufrano on keyboards as Jordan sings “I saw you last night and I knew you’re somebody else’s baby too”.

On “Back Up Plan” with the great four-piece horn section Jordan chimes “baby here I am, I’m gonna be your man, that’s my backup plan. “Where Is Justice” is written with the addition of M. Smith. “Bruised” features an infectious beat as Jordan sings “it started way back when…what did you do, I’m so confused, you left me bruised”. On “Love Out Loud”, Jordan chimes “what do you do when you wake up with love…yesterday is gone…open your heart, love out loud”, with some more great sax from McNeal and Sudduth. On the follow-up Jordan sings “that’s how I remember it , baby, “That’s Not How The Story Goes”.

“No ToFu” is a funky tune featuring the background vocalists, The Sons of The Soul Revivers; Dwayne, Walter, and James Morgan, in a ‘call and response’ with Jordan singing “bring me some barbeque, I don’t want no tofu”.
“After A While” is a song solely written by Vitale, which was the first song she heard Jordan sing, and it inspired this fabulous album “after a while, when we meet I’ll say hello, when we meet, oh baby, I’ll be fine, I’ll feel the new day, after a while”.

The Anthony Paul Orchestra shares observations of life’s hopes without finger wagging or preachy rhetoric. Jordan glides through this varied musical landscape with captivating confidence. Born and raised in the Canadian Prairies, Ollie Owens was always around music. Growing up she listened to artists such as Elvis, Odetta, Mavis Staples, Bonnie Raitt, The Band, and Bob Dylan. She took comfort in writing her own songs to comfort the chaotic and give visibilty to her own feelings. She took a fifteen year respite in order to raise a family, but never completely stepped aside from her passion as she volunteered as a music therapist, occasionally performing and always writing songs. She was encouraged by several including the late, great Bill Dowy and decided to pursue her dream of a career in music. Ollie has since shared the stage with the Hello Darlins, Matt Anderson, and Dawn Tyler Watson. In 2022 she released her debut album “Cannot Be Unheard”. “Nowhere To Hide” is her sophmore effort.

“Nowhere To Hide” is produced by drummer Bobby Blazier. It was recorded at the Gnome Studios and Sweetbriar Studios, both in Nashville. The title track leads off, featuring Owens, as she sings about working through relationships, “ain’t no trouble gonna bring us down”, with guitarists Will McFarlane and Phil Hughley. On “Solid Ground” Owens sings “this old world can get you down” with Gabe Klein on keyboards, Rahsaan Barber on saxophone, and bassist Tommy Sims.

About the next song, Owens states “the writing of ‘Some Days’ came out of a desire to acknowledge the ups and downs of our day-to-day experiences and the resilience of the human spirit”, although blues infused it is a happy song. On “Roots” Owens sings “when the storm clouds gather…nothing gonna keep you down”. “Love You Better”, “I’m gonna love, I’m gonna treat you right, yes, I am”. “Still In Pieces”, “you said your sorry, all in pieces now, don’t know what to do”, DeMarco Johnson is featured on keyboards.

On the well crafted “Shivers and Butterflies” Owens croons “you light up my eyes, you make me feel so alive, I just love, love, lovin’ you”. “My Man”, “he will be there for you, no matter where you go, you know I just can’t help love my man”. “The Neighborhood” is the first of two covers written by David Hildago and Louie Perez of the multiple Grammy Winning Chicano rock band “Los Lobos”, once again McFarlane plays some great guitar, while Rahsaan Barber plays sax, and Roland Barber, trumpet.

DeMarco Johnson, plays keyboards and takes us to church on the gospel infused closing track from Bob Dylan, as Owens belts out “Lord Protect My Child”. Owens and her husband started their family early and had three daughters, one of whom has a cognitive disability. As a result Owens pours her soul into this remarkable song “My daughter is twenty-three now, but there’s still a lot of vulnerability…the desire for protecting and taking care of her will never go away”.

Born Frank Otis Frost in Auvergne, Arkansas, Frost’s first exposure to music came as a young boy when he learned to play the piano for the choir in his family’s church. Frost moved to St. Louis, Missouri when he was 15 and began his musical career as a guitarist. He toured in 1954 with drummer Sam Carr and Carr’s father, Robert Nighthawk. Soon after, he spent several years touring with Sonny Boy Williamson, who helped teach him to play harmonica. After a hand injury, Frost turned his attention to the harmonica and piano.

Around 1960, Frost moved with Carr to the Mississippi Delta. After he played a show with the guitarist Big Jack Johnson, they added him to their group. Together they attracted the interest of the record producer Sam Phillips, who years earlier had overseen Elvis Presley‘s first recording sessions. He produced Hey Boss Man for Phillips International in 1962, with blues hybrids like “Frank’s Jump” showing off Frost’s diverse, intensely melodic harmonica solos. Presley’s guitarist, Scotty Moore, produced Frost’s next album in Nashville, Tennessee in 1966 forJewel Records. Augmented by session bassist Chip Young, the trio’s tight downhome ensemble work was once again seamless. “My Back Scratcher,” Frost’s takeoff on Slim Harpo‘s “Baby Scratch My Back,” even dented the R&B chart for three weeks.

In the late 1970s, Frost was re-discovered by a blues enthusiast, Michael Frank, who began releasing albums on his Earwig Music Company label by the trio, now called the Jelly Roll Kings after a song from Hey Boss Man. Over the years, cigarettes and alcohol wore Frost down but he continued to record, tour and diversify his repertory, appearing in the films Deep Blues: A Musical Pilgrimage to the Crossroads and Crossroads.

Frost died from a cardiac arrest in Helena, Arkansas in 1999.

Big Fat Mama was formed in 1979 by Piero De Luca (vocals, bass) together with Giampiero Esposito (drums), Fiorenzo Bodellini (harmonica) and Elio Arlandi (guitar). After different changes, from 1985 the band acquired a stable order with Piero De Luca (bass), Paolo Bonfanti (guitar, vocals), Mauro Mura (drums) and Maurizio Renda (guitar, vocals). From this moment Big Fat Mama has been considered one of the most important band on the Italian blues scene. After the great success of their Switzerland/Italian tour in 1992, the band began a collaboration with the American harmonica player Johnny Mars.

During his long career, Johnny Mars has taken part in major festivals and tours in the USA, his native country, and also Australia and Europe, including the UK where he now lives. Johnny played with B.B. King at the Montreux Jazz festival in 1983, and was the Preacher Man in the recording released by Bananarama in the 1990s, also featuring in their video during that time.

In the liner notes of their effervescent new album, 40: Blues With Horns Volume II, by Chris Daniels and the Kings, Daniels describes Louis Armstrong's brilliant 1928 recording of “West End Blues” as the beginning of an era of “horn-band sound.” The King's 20th album on their 40th anniversary proves that their magnificent big-band sound is still keeping that era alive. The Colorado-based Kings have been pumping out music since their 1984 founding by Daniels, with the band membership shape-shifting along the way. The Kings of this album are: Chris Daniels, vocals, electric, acoustic, slide and synth guitars; Freddi Gowdy, vocals; Steve Ivey, drums; John Thornburg, bass and vocals; Colin “Bones” Jones, guitars; Bob Rebholz, alto sax and flute; Darryl “Doody“ Abrahamson, trumpet and vocals; Darren Kramer, trombone. Daniels and Gowdy share the vocals all through the tracks.

Guests adding their talents throughout include Christian Teele, percussion; Mark Oblinger and Linda Lawson, vocals with Robert Johnson and Kenny Andrus; Sam Bush, mandolin and fiddle; Hazel Miller, vocals; Tom Capek, B3 and keyboards; Steve Conn, accordion, B3; and Sonny Landreth, slide guitar. Allen Finney is an American born, multitalented musician, based in Sweden. Steeped in the roots traditions of American folk, rock, country, blues, and jazz, Allen Finney emerges with a unique expression in his own musical style.

In the early 80s Allen Finney did solo, warm up act for J.J. Cale at the Olympia, Dire Straits at the old Roman Theatre in Orange, France, Canned Heat in Biarritz, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Weather Report and others. He also had a song, in French, on the Top 40, “Les Champs de Beton.”

Allen Finney has a huge song book and has during his years in Sweden released a number of albums. He received the 2002 Stockholm Blues Förening Janne Rosenqvist stipendium and in 2019 he received the first Sven Zetterberg minnespris. Allen Finney was also a good friend with Izzy Young, both living in Stockholm, Sweden, and Izzy invited Allen frequently to set up shows at his Folklore Centrum.

The new album All about me will be released in September 2023, It is the forth album Allen Finney releases together with the Swedish musician and producer Robert Ivansson. Previous albums are In a Blue Frame (2020), Salt Breeze with Kites (2018) and Picture Window, 2021.
