Bass playing ex-Rolling Stone, alone with his pals. Far from a retired rock millionaire's indulgence, this is high-precision white-boy jazz-blues-pop superbly performed by Brit R&B veterans. Albert Lee does his jaw-slackening pickin' thing, Clapton and Mick Taylor show up, Georgie Fame and Gary Brooker are on Hammond and piano respectively and there's a creamy rhythm section negotiating boogie, two beat swing and gumbo grooves with aplomb.

Wyman's '70s solo albums always displayed a flair for stylistic detail but his weak singing virtually relegated them to vanity projects. Not so here. With Fame, Paul Carrack and Beverly Skeete on authentic vocal form, Wyman's pastiche compositions comfortably hold their own with standards like Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You. There's still the odd dodgy bow-legged woman" and "don't like the way you cook/don't like the way you look" hangover, but that's Bill. /Chris Ingham, Mojo Magazine

Bill Wyman's Bootleg Kings, aka Bootleg Kings and Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, are an English blues-rock band founded and led by former Rolling Stones bass guitarist Bill Wyman. Other personnel have varied depending on availability, an arrangement described in The Telegraph as a "a fluctuating squad of veterans". Their concerts and albums tend to emphasize cover songs of blues, R&B and early rock and roll hits from the 1950s.

Wyman formed the Rhythm Kings after leaving the Rolling Stones in 1993 subsequent to the extended world-wide tour to support Steel Wheels, citing a desire to work in smaller clubs and avoid the pressure of being in one of the most successful rock bands in the world. On 10 December 2007, Wyman and his band appeared alongside a reunited Led Zeppelin at the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at the O2 in London. In 2009, ex-Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor was invited as a guest performer with Wyman's Rhythm Kings.

Personnel: Bill Wyman (bass); Gary Brooker (piano, vocals); Georgie Fame (organ, vocals); Mike Sanchez (keyboards, vocals); Albert Lee (lead guitar, vocals); Martin Taylor (lead guitar); Terry Taylor (rhythm guitar); Lonnie Donegan (vocals); Beverley Skeete (vocals); Janice Hoyte (vocals); Frank Mead, Nick Payn (horns); Graham Broad, Henry Spinetti (drums); Keeley Coburn, Melaine Redmond (backing vocals).

Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings - Collector's Edition Box Set (5-Disc Set)

Back in the 1990s, Bill Wyman did the unthinkable and left the Rolling Stones — the consensus greatest rock ’n’ roll band of all time — and went on to form a group of his own that equaled his previous band in terms of chops, while actually surpassing the Stones in sheer versatility. What’s more, Wyman has managed to keep Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings going strong for a decade and a half and counting, with an ever-shifting lineup of fellow all-star players coming together from all points on the stylistic map and locking together with the precision of a Swiss watch — albeit with a lot more soul. For Wyman, this remarkable accomplishment was the most natural thing in the world. This musicians’ musician just wants to play music, free of all the surrounding nonsense, and so do his talented friends.

These recordings feature the talents of Gary Brooker, Georgie Fame, Beverley Skeete, Terry Taylor, Mike Sanchez, Andy Fairweather Low, Martin Taylor, Chris Stainton and Albert Lee. This special set of studio recordings, the first ones to be issued since 2004, gathers up fifteen outtakes from eight different sessions, including two songs from as far back as March 1987 (before the actual formation of the Rhythm Kings). These previously overlooked and unheard gems have been newly mixed for this album by Bill Wyman and Terry Taylor. The booklet contains all the musician credits. It's a very eclectic selection of songs, from Midnight Oil to Canned Heat to Dan Hicks, via classics by Willie Dixon, Slim Harpo, Jimmie Rodgers, Louis Jordan and Don Covay, and some originals - there's a solo song by Georgie Fame, "Skiing Blues", and "Jazz Walk", a Wyman/Fame co-write.
