The Madtown Mannish Boys are a Madison-based Blues band who are steeped in Chicago-style Blues, including artists like Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Otis Spann, Paul Butterfield, and Little Walter. They perform with raw exuberance and driving rhythms that make you want to boogie. Some of their tunes are harmonica-driven, played with gritty fervor and intense energy. Others are soulful ballads, heavily influenced by the likes of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. This mix of styles and genres makes for an entertaining and dynamic show that you won’t want to miss.

Andy Smith has a powerful and soulful voice, reminiscent of some of the greats from Blues and R&B. Paul Schwoerer wields his harmonica with a chip on his shoulder and his vocals are gripping and yet smooth. Jesse “Honey Boy” Steinberg injects melodic flurries of guitar riffs into the lively grooves laid down by Tim Payne (bass) and Nate Morenek (drums). The first of a handful of early live albums by the group, recorded in concert at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles and the Unicorn in Boston in 1965. The Chambers Brothers were purely an R&B outfit at the time (their psychedelic stylings being a couple of years in the future), and a good one, although they're a little bit surer on the more basic blues than on some of the R&B that they cover - their renditions of Jimmy Reed's material seem more inspired than their performance of the Valentinos' old hit "It's All Over Now," although to their credit their rendition of the latter sounds nothing like the Rolling Stones' then-current cover of the same song.

The group also does a beautiful job of harmonizing on Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," and shows a command of the poppier side of rock & roll on "Call Me," a group original with a catchy "Hang on Sloopy"-style central riff. This album, like its companion release, Now, is a good low-cost introduction to the Chambers Brothers, who show that, even at this early date in their history, they were a commanding and exciting presence on-stage. /Bruce Eder, AllMusic

Major Handy is a Zydeco musician and blues accordion player who was born in 1947 in Lafayette, Louisiana. Surrounded by Creole music while growing up, he has since fine-tuned his skills on the guitar, bass, piano and accordion, along with becoming a vocalist. His past gigs include playing guitar with Rockin’ Dopsie’s band for 12 years and with Buckwheat Zydeco’s original lineup for about a year. Over the years, he has held various jobs including acting as deputy sheriff in the late 1970s, holding a regular gig in Canada that include doing a cooking show before his set and running his own auto business.

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent self titled release from Gail Gunnis & The Dirty Roosters and it is a mix of classic blues artists with the bands cool personal arrangements. Opening with Freddie King's I Love You More Everyday, Gail Gunnis leads the way on vocal, backed by Fabio Parovel on guitar, Paul Kidd on sax, Chris Rooney on bass and Duncan McBain on drums. Solomon Burke's Cry To Me is up next with a great R&B feel. Pat Carey steps up with a rich sax solo and McBain's tight drums give the track just the right snap. Ann Peebles' I Can't Stand The Rain is one of my favorite tracks on the release with some of Gunnis' best vocals and a thumping bass line by Rooney. Another cool sax solo by Carey sets the track off nicely. Hot R&B track, I Know, is a great track to pull out of the hopper with a super beat. again Carey is featured on sax and again, nice job. Since I Fell For You, another classic soul track written by Buddy Johnson, is one of the nicest showcases for Gunnis with smooth vocal lines and rich sax echo by Kidd and clean guitar soloing by Parovel. Wrapping the release is Jimmy Reed's My Bitter Seed with light electric rhythm and Robert Davis on harmonica. Real nice closer for a solid release. ~bman

The joyous whoop that Sonny Terry naturally emitted between raucous harp blasts was as distinctive a signature sound as can possibly be imagined. Only a handful of blues harmonica players wielded as much of a lasting influence on the genre as did the sightless Terry (Buster Brown, for one, copied the whoop and all), who recorded some fine urban blues as a bandleader in addition to serving as guitarist Brownie McGhee's longtime duet partner.

Saunders Terrell's father was a folk-styled harmonica player who performed locally at dances, but blues wasn't part of his repertoire (he blew reels and jigs). Terry wasn't born blind, he lost sight in one eye when he was five, the other at age 18. That left him with extremely limited options for making any sort of feasible living, so he took to the streets armed with his trusty harmonicas. Terry soon joined forces with Piedmont pioneer Blind Boy Fuller, first recording with the guitarist in 1937 for Vocalion.

Terry's unique talents were given an extremely classy airing in 1938 when he was invited to perform at New York's Carnegie Hall at the fabled From Spirituals to Swing concert. He recorded for the Library of Congress that same year and cut his first commercial sides in 1940. Terry had met McGhee in 1939, and upon the death of Fuller, they joined forces, playing together on a 1941 McGhee date for OKeh and settling in New York as a duo in 1942. There they broke into the folk scene, working alongside Leadbelly, Josh White, and Woody Guthrie.

While Brownie McGhee was incredibly prolific in the studio during the mid-'40s, Terry was somewhat less so as a leader (perhaps most of his time was occupied by his prominent role in Finian's Rainbow on Broadway for approximately two years beginning in 1946). There were sides for Asch and Savoy in 1944 before three fine sessions for Capitol in 1947 (the first two featuring Stick McGhee rather than Brownie on guitar) and another in 1950.

Terry made some nice sides in an R&B mode for Jax, Jackson, Red Robin, RCA Victor, Groove, Harlem, Old Town, and Ember during the '50s, usually with Brownie close by on guitar. But it was the folk boom of the late '50s and early '60s that made Brownie and Sonny household names (at least among folk aficionados). They toured long and hard as a duo, cutting a horde of endearing acoustic duet LPs along the way, before scuttling their decades-long partnership amidst a fair amount of reported acrimony during the mid-'70s. ~Bill Dahl

When thinking of historic hometowns of the blues, cities like St. Louis, Memphis and Chicago quickly come to mind, but Oakland California, historically a focal point of the West Coast blues and jazz scenes, is often overlooked. The city has a significant art scene and claims the highest concentration of artists per capita in the United States. Drummer, songwriter, producer and certified blues man, Twist Turner, spent several years living and working in the Oakland area where he began this album project in 2013 to “produce a recording of the unknown and underappreciated blues men and women of the Bay Area.”

When Twist returned to Chicago, after his 6-year stint in California, he found several artists in need of the same boost. Thus, he created the album “Battle Of The Blues: Chicago Vs Oakland,” a collection of 11 original tracks and two covers that features over 30 of the best musicians each city has to offer including Mz. SuMac, Aldwin London, Freddie Roulette, Country Pete McGill and Nat Bolden from the San Francisco Bay area and the late Emery Williams Jr., former Magic Sam bass man, James Newman, from Chicago and “Mr. Excitement” himself Del Brown. The all-star cast delivers old school and new school blues, with the common denominator being Twist himself, who wrote all the originals and plays drums on the entire project, as well as mixing and producing for his own label, Delta Roots Records. Quite a Herculean task.

The saucy chanteuse of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta area, Mz. SuMac, opens the album delivering a rebuke of a deadbeat ‘Broke Ass Man.’ Aldwin London then leads on bass and vocals through a gentle reading of the Willie Nelson composition ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ that features sultry saxophone from John “Boom” Brumbach. The instrumentals, ‘Take It Easy’ and ‘Red Tide,’ are fine vehicles to showcase the soaring playing of lap steel player, Freddie Roulette, and Nat Bolden’s ‘Good Morning Mr. Blues,’ is recast over the Stormy Monday changes and augmented with a full horn section. Mississippi born blues man, James Newman, delivers the lead vocals on the smooth R&B groove ‘Hit And Run Lover,’ and the working man’s tribute to the six string ‘Me And My Guitar.’ Turner captures the vocal talents of the late great Emery Williams Jr. on two outstanding tracks, the scorching R&B ‘Hurtin’ On You,’ and the gospel blues ‘Mama Don’t Weep,’ as a final gift from the powerful and passionate Chicago artist taken to soon.

The mind blowing tenor of “Mr. Excitement” Del Brown is presented for the first time as the lead on the stirring soul blues ‘Now That I’ve Gone,’ and introspective R&B ‘Time Slippin’ Away,’ something that has been long overdue for the veteran, who began his career in the record business in 1959. The smoky vocals of Gerald McClendon, who is known as the “Soul Keeper” in Chicago, are perfectly suited for the slow burning ‘Cold In The Streets.’ A fixture of the Bay Area scene until his untimely death in 2018, Country Pete McGill leads the charge on the classic bump and grind ‘Hoochie Coochie Mama,’ with Aldwin London on bass, Roulette on steel joining in on the blues party.

As a sign of respect, Twist Turner did not include his name in the list of artists on the cover art, preferring to keep the focus on the talents and inspired contributions by his fellow believers and friends from Chicago and Oakland in a timeless collection of blues treasures. ~Rick J Bowen

This nine-song, 41-minute album, originally released on the Vault label, was recorded live at performances at the Unicorn in Boston and the Ash Grove in Los Angeles. The shows, from 1965, pre-dated the Chambers Brothers' signing to Columbia by more than a year, and capture the group just coming up as a major discotheque attraction, still retaining elements of their gospel roots on songs such as "Baby Don't Cry" and even "High Heel Sneakers."

The set includes some basic rock & roll, "Long Tall Sally" and "Bonie Maronie," both highly animated in the playing as well as the singing, and stirring despite some moments of sloppiness, such as wrong notes, etc., but there's also some slow blues ("It's Groovin' Time," "C.C. Rider") present, which gives the group a chance to stretch out. The closing number, "So Fine," is about as perfect a song as the group generated during the early part of their history, showcasing their fine harmony singing, bluesy guitar work, and a rock steady beat in a performance that soars and surges for six solid minutes.

This is one of the better-sounding live rock or soul documents of its period, captured in decent fidelity right down to the twisting guitar part in "Long Tall Sally" and about half of the vocals up fairly close as well. The band's sound is divided between the two channels, drums one on side, bass on the other, and the voices split between the two. /Bruce Eder, AllMusic

Night Train is a competent journeyman set of old school-style R&B, mixing covers with Terry Hanck originals. The covers give a good sense of where Hanck is coming from, as he selects songs from the catalogs of Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, Hank Ballard, and Little Willie John. He plays good smoky saxophone in the spirit of Junior Walker, "Junior's Walk" being an obvious homage to that Motown great.

As a singer, he's not as good; the vocals are only adequate. With its mix of New Orleans rock & roll, early soul, and some blues, it's very much a record steeped in 1950s and 1960s forms of R&B, though one that keeps the torch burning rather than igniting it with a distinctive creative voice. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Tom JJ is an exciting, up and coming Blues artist from South London. Over the last six years, since he could legally get into the venues, Tom has been making a name for himself on the vibrant London Blues scene with his original songs and a mix of traditional Chicago style and foot stomping Texas Blues.

Tom has been singing professionally since the age of eight. Trained on the trumpet, he started to teach himself blues harp and guitar at fourteen. He found an outlet for his blues passion a year later in a local piano bar and played for coca cola. He cajoled a few of his school friends into a band, organising them to busk every weekend. He says it taught him to manage the strange whims of musicians, understand audiences and set lists and to keep a pair of fingerless gloves on standby in the winter.

When he left school, he started a university course in London but found his heart wasn’t in academia and his music degree was getting in the way of his playing. He left after a year and with the help of a few generous well-known musicians he embedded himself quickly on the London scene. He was soon taking over the running of a couple of well-respected weekly Blues jams and creating new ones.

He has recently been working with the Giles Robson band touring Holland, Belgium and the Czech Republic. He has played with James Harman, Billy Branch, Magic Dick, Ian Siegal and Katie Bradley. Last year on a solo trip to Austen, Texas, he played with Paul Oscher, the harmonica player in the Muddy Waters band.

Mitch Kashmar is one of the top 10 blues harmonica and was born in 1960 in Santa Barbara, California. Formerly on tour with his renowned blues band "the Pontiax", he is now a guest at innumerable festivals worldwide as a fantastic singer and gifted blues harp player.

In 1999 he released his solo debut "Crazy Mixed-Up World", which, while "as a docile student of his mentors" but far more than an original songwriter, solid singer and one of the truly exciting representatives of the genre "harmonica player " shows.
His German backing band, the Boogie Kings, consists of Berlin guitarist Jan Hirte, pianist Niels von der Leyen and former blues shack drummer Andreas Bock, all of whom are part of the cream of German blues music.

After the critically acclaimed success and Blues Music Award nomination of his last album 'Reckoning', Billy was excited and eager to get back into Greaseland Studio in San Jose, California with producer Kid Andersen. Kid and Billy's mutual love for the music and commitment to making an original contribution to the soul blues genre is evident in this new collection.

Kid and Billy assembled a first-class group of musicians on 'Dog Eat Dog', which features Price on vocals along with Andersen (guitars and assorted instruments), Alex Pettersen (drums), Jerry Jemmott (bass), Jim Pugh (keys), Eric Spaulding (tenor sax), Jack Sanford (baritone sax), and John Halblieb (trumpet). Andersen added congas to most tracks, covered by Jon Otis (son of the great Johnny Otis) and Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples). Randle also provided background vocals long with Lisa Leuschner Andersen, Charlie Owen, and the Sons of the Soul Revivers gospel group. 'Dog Eat Dog' also features guest appearances by Rick Estrin, Alabama Mike, and Mike Zito. Estrin plays harmonica on the title track, which he wrote. A big fan of Alabama Mike, Price was thrilled to share the lead vocals with Mike on "Dog Eat Dog". Mike Zito also contributed a scorching guitar solo on "All Night Long Café."

Though not essential and not as strong as Back to Back, Too Much Pain was a welcome addition to Milton's catalog. Milton never claimed to be a purist, and the album illustrates his effectiveness as both a bluesman and a soul shouter. Highlights of this likable date range from the smooth '70s-ish uptown soul of "The Woman I Love" (which wouldn't have been inappropriate on a Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes album) to "So Much Pain," "Count the Days," and Denise LaSalle's amusing "Your Wife Is Cheating on Us." If you're into clever double entendres, get into "Runway," a Stax-ish soul gem that finds Milton equating a cheating lover with an airport runway in that everyone is landing on her. /Alex Henderson, AllMusic

Paul Reddick and company dig into the pre-World War II rural blues repertoire. They come up with Delta gems for their tough, electric blues sound. They use studio effects and unexpected equipment to achieve raw, analog visitations of the past blues masters on almost every track.
