George Porter, Jr. is best known as the bassist of The Meters, along with Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. The group was formed in the mid 60's and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk then called R&B. The Meters disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 1989. Today the original group still plays the occasional reunions but the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are still members, most prominently keeps the spirit alive.

Porter’s rhythmic work in the Meters in lockstep with drummer Zigaboo Modeliste was epic. Those pockets, the long notes and fat holes, provided the cushion for Leo Nocentelli or Art Neville to play or sing over and created some of R&B history’s most memorable grooves.

Few bass players in the history of modern New Orleans music are as storied as George Porter Jr. During the course of a career spanning more then four decades, Porter has not only made a deep impression with his work in the Meters, but he’s notched session work with artists as diverse as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Patti LaBelle, Robbie Robertson, Tori Amos, Taj Mahal, Ryan Montbleau and live performances with Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Warren Haynes, John Scofield, Steve Kimock, Eric Krasno (and including recent studio releases with Warren Haynes and Bill Kreutzmann) just to name a few. Early in his career, Porter worked with seminal New Orleans artists like Allen Toussaint, Earl King, Lee Dorsey, and Johnny Adams, Irma Thomas, The Lastie Brothers again to only name a few.

Porter is also the band leader of his own unique long term project the Runnin’ Pardners, well respected not only as a quintessential New Orleans band, the touring band continues to receive accolades on the jam band and festival scene. He has assembled some seasoned and talented musicians to join him on this project. George Porter Jr. plans to keep a smile on his face." I feel like I am working towards something that will be remembered."

Porter has proven to be capable of the ultimate fusion of rock, funk and R&B, and has gained recognition as one of the industry’s elite bass players. He continues to be not only an in demand performing artist but an accomplished studio musician and producer.

Dwayne (Dopsie) Rubin hails from one of the most influential Zydeco families in the world. Although inspired by tradition, Dwayne has developed his own high energy style that defies existing stereotypes and blazes a refreshingly distinct path for 21st century Zydeco music. This singer/songwriter and accordionist has performed all over the world since debuting his band, Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, at age 19.

The Louisiana native writes both the lyrics and music for his songs and describes the upcoming album as soulful with a touch of blues and old time zydeco feel.

Dwayne Dopsie, grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana,teaching his self how to play accordion watching videos of his father and Clifton Chenier and recording his self with a video camera and going back and watch it and playing over and over for hours until it was right . The knowledge of Dwayne’s musical ability along with zydeco Hellraisers band members are Combined, to have over 100 years of experience playing Zydeco music and it shows in every performance. The energy, true talent, and exuberance that Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers emit from stage makes it obvious that there is no competition for this band.

Ivan Neville and Dumpstaphunk is well enough established to not simply to be referred to as the next generation of the Neville Brothers and the Meters. Although, that’s a pretty heady proclamation for any fan of New Orleans music.

The band is comprised of Ivan and Ian Neville, bassists Nick Daniels and Tony Hall and drummer Raymond Weber. Ivan plays keyboards and sings and looks very much like his father, Aaron Neville, the most commercially successful of the Neville Brothers band. Ian is the son of Art “Papa Funk” Neville, the founder of the Meters, perhaps the most influential funk musicians after James Brown. Ian plays guitar.

Crystal Bay’s musical promoter Devil Dog Productions is a longtime conduit for “NOLA” to Tahoe. In recent years, Reno’s Jelly Bread has been paired with Dumpstaphunk, and for good reason. Each band member contributes vocally and the music has a funk foundation.

“For what we do, Dumpstaphunk is the epitome,” said Jelly Bread’s Dave Berry. “It’s top shelf. They do what we aspire to do. It’s so inspirational to play with them, and they’re really cool guys, too. Every time we rub elbows with them, there is nothing but respect.”

Ivan Neville has not only performed at Crystal Bay and Squaw Valley, he’s also been in Tahoe with the super jam group Dragon Smoke and as a featured artist at Snowlive. While Devil Dog is able to book the gigs, Neville has another reason to visit the area. Poker players should beware of the keyboardist known for his good hands.

Acclaimed guitarist’s new album mixes genres and styles across a landscape of lyricism and rootsy grooves.

A percussive burst of acoustic resonator guitar pushes the narrator on a journey “between the life I left and the edge of next” in the title cut of guitarist, songwriter and bandleader Sonny Landreth’s 14th album. As the singer feels the wind at his back, a rising bass line intersects Landreth’s vocalizing to stretch the fingerpicked tune into Far Eastern melodicism.

The south Louisiana artist’s groundbreaking work has long mixed familiarity with experimentation, and his latest 10-song collection stretches from hard-edged electric instrumentals to wistful acoustic ballads. The project’s range is the fruit of a renewed collaboration. Producer RS Field – who helmed Landreth’s trio of breakout albums – joined the six-stringer and co-producer Tony Daigle to finish the record.

“His brilliance and creative energy recharged us,” Landreth said of reuniting with Field. Most of the tracks were recorded live at famed Dockside Studios on the Vermilion River south of Lafayette, La. “We came up with new and better ideas, and that’s what you want,” he added. “It couldn’t have gone better.”

A quartet of instrumentals highlights the expressive power of bassist David Ranson, drummer Brian Brignac and multi-talented keyboardist/songwriter Steve Conn. The sultry, slow zydeco pulse of “Lover Dance With Me” features Landreth trading in his signature glass slide for his guitar’s tremolo arm and a rotating Leslie speaker cabinet. “Mule” follows, with its tailgate rhythm bouncing through a his-and-her tale of unrequited love.

“Groovy Goddess” takes the listener into harder-edged jazz-rock territory, showcasing the slide guitar prowess that has twice landed Landreth on the cover of Guitar Player magazine. “Honestly, I think the purest form of music is improvised,” the bandleader says. “When it flows, it’s exhilarating. It just seems to come out of nowhere and connect your heart and soul to your fingertips.” Blacktop Run comes on the heels of Landreth’s Grammy-nominated double album Recorded Live In Lafayette, which features an acoustic disc and an electric disc. The new record brings both sides together without concern for how the layered tracks might be arranged for the bandstand. “Different approaches can influence one another – and for me, that just makes it more musical, more interesting,” Landreth explains.

The first of two Conn compositions follows with a new arrangement built around a guitar tuning Landreth developed but had not yet used in the studio. “Somebody Gotta Make A Move” also features its composer on Wurlitzer electric piano and Hammond B-3 organ. “I could see this one becoming a blues standard,” Landreth says. “That’s the mark of a great song.”

“Beyond Borders” picks up the pace and features Conn in a role originally envisioned for Carlos Santana. Landreth composed the instrumental for From The Reach, his 2008 release featuring guest artists Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, Vince Gill and others. “It’s complex,” Landreth says, “and now seems tailor-made for Steve.” “Don’t Ask Me,” the second Conn cut, delves into existential mysteries with humor via an acoustic, back porch Delta feel. Brignac played cajón, Ranson played ukulele bass, and Conn stretches out on accordion.

“The Wilds of Wonder” is a cinematic tribute to the brave folks working on the front lines of our planet’s environmental crises. And the shape-shifting instrumental “Many Worlds” builds on the previous number’s rich textures to bring the record to its final cut, “Something Grand,” the first Landreth recording in years without a guitar solo. That last tune, he says, “is a song of redemption. And though it’s between two people in a relationship, it also speaks to life’s larger challenges.”
After two Grammy nominations, multiple appearances at Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival and wide-ranging acclaim from fellow players and fans worldwide, Landreth is looking forward to playing the new material live. He’ll continue mixing electric and acoustic settings onstage, with Daigle bringing the sounds and concepts of the recording studio to venue mixing consoles.

“It’s all about telling the story,” Landreth says, “and as long as I can find my way up that path, I’m all in.” As the songwriter’s narrator sings in the title number of Blacktop Run, “A new day is dawning and I have never felt so alive.”

A fixture of the New Orleans music scene for over two decades, THE IGUANAS' music is an infectious mix of America's musical heritage - Tejano and Conjunto sounds from the Texas/Mexico border region, as best exemplified by the accordion and bajo sexto, the American South's Blues, Jazz and New Orleans R&B, and the fiery passion of the music of the Caribbean and Mexico. Back in 1966 future John the Revelator singer and bassman Tom Huissen lived in London at the time that the blues scene there exploded. He became pals with Peter Green and witnessed the first rehearsals of Pete’s then new band Fleetwood Mac. Immediately after returning in Holland Tom started to form a blues band modelled after Fleetwood Mac. John the Revelator took off immediately and extensively started gigging the Dutch and European blues circuits that were thriving at the time.

After winning the prestigious Loosdrecht Jazz contest in 1970 record label Decca offered the band a recording contract resulting in the first album “Wild Blues”. Since then band has played all over the European continent and released many blues albums. In recent years John the Revelator has jammed with Peter Green, Snowy White, Chris Farlowe and a bunch of legendary Dutch blues guys. Some of them are featured on the album “Down in the Mud” and on the live DVD “Blues Train to Thalia” which was released in 2007.

After playing all over Europe the band now for the first time will be touring Western Australia in November 2009 and play at the prestigious Bridgetown Blues Festival. In September the new studio album “Underway” will be released.

For as long as anybody can remember Brian Calway aka Hash Brown has been a ubiquitous and positive presence on the Dallas blues scene. As a function of age and geography I happen to remember Hash Brown’s early tenure as host of the Sunday Blues Jam in the late 80’s at Schooners in the newly revitalized Deep Ellum historical district. That struggling African-American enclave on the east end of downtown Dallas, was desperately trying to preserve its history, culture and legacy. Hash Brown did the same for blues men, helping them with their careers. His positive associations with Henry Qualls, Zuzu Bolin and Sam Myers, for instance, had a great impact on their legacies.

Now after 17 years between albums bearing his name, Hash Brown is back with a terrific 2022 release. Stop! Your Evil Ways on Jeff Berg’s fledgling Massachusetts based Feffrey Records label is drenched with Texas grit, more than a hint of uptown cool and a splash of cocktail blues, all stirred with the same straw that mixed the drinks of T-Bone Walker. Calway returned to New England to record this album where the blues man first plugged into the blues. With artists like Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, Johnny Nicholas, Roomful of Blues and Duke Robillard helping to pave the way for the young guitarist, vocalist and harmonica player. It turned out to be the perfect training ground for a life on the Texas blues scene.

Stop! Your Evil Ways was produced and engineered by Jeff Berg. He also plays bass throughout this 12-song offering. The disc features drummer Mark Teixeira and Bruce Bears plays organ and piano. They are joined by Doug James who handles all the saxophone duties. These three veteran musicians are all long-time members of Duke Robillard’s studio and road band.

This ensemble provides confident, solid support for Calway, who seems to know exactly what to play in each song. As important, his instincts tell him what not to play. His interaction with James’ sax passages is nothing short of sublime and harkens back to the halcyon days, when blues, rhythm & blues and, to only a slightly lesser extent, jazz got all mixed up in a mesmerizing soundscape that is simply intoxicating.

Hash Brown’s vocals might be an acquired taste. If that is the case, I acquired that taste a long time ago. Like most great musicians he treats his singing like any other instrument, in that he gives each song the sensitivity it deserves. A mix of covers by Big Bill Broonzy, B.B. King, Sonny Boy Willamson 2, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and others sits very comfortably with songs written by Calway. These songs reflect the maturity and intelligence that resides in the heart and soul of the man known as Hash Brown. /David Mac, Blues Junction Productions

Since singing with the legendary group the Aces, Louisiana native Bobby Jones has since been a virtual unknown nationally up until 2007, though he's been fairly active in his second home of Chicago. When he was "discovered" languishing in obscurity by Leon Blue and the Delta Grooves label, they finally offered him an opportunity to record. It's a good thing that everyone gets to hear what a fine, skilled, and strong vocalist he is. The richness of his solid, soul-sending voice is, in many ways, beyond compare, both in a retro and contemporary vein. Frankly, there are few singers who can match what he is putting down on this, his way-overdue debut as a leader.

Backed by the rising star blues band the Mannish Boys and accompanied by a treasure trove of all-stars, Jones slashes his way through a set of blues classics, current-day funky tunes, two originals from bandmembers, and two from Ike Turner. Classic tracks include Junior Parker's rocker "Mystery Train" with vocalist Finis Tasby and harmonica by Randy Chortkoff on the side, the lesser-known Hank Ballard sub-hit "She's the One," and Johnnie Pate's great swing shuffle "Tired of Your Jive" done in the tough and disgusted B.B. King tradition. George Allen wrote "I Don't Know," while Jones slows the pace alongside the boogie piano of Fred Kaplan, and takes Mel London's "Cry for Me Baby" out for an upbeat spin, extolling his virtues.

Jones is so superlative and commanding here, he carries all of these songs no matter the backup group of soloists, but he really shines on Willie Dixon's "Two Headed Woman," a shuffle with the twangy guitar of the Mannish Boys' Paris Slim, and tears up the swinger "Three Handed Woman" (right-handed, left-handed, and underhanded) with help from harmonica player Lynwood Slim and a keen eye for what goes down on the sly. Kid Ramos plays excellent lead guitar on five tracks, and Junior Watson joins in on two more. This is a great party album, easily apropo for your next get together, as it was for all of the great blues musicians who convened for the love of Bobby Jones, to create a treasure finally uncovered, shined up, and proudly placed on display. /Michael G. A sharp suit and a thousand songs. That’s what earned New York City native Russell Alexander his moniker, early in the vast musical career that made him the master guitarist, singer, and songwriter for the Hitman Blues Band that he is today. Earning that nickname took a lot of work. But the most important gigs Russell ever did on the way to getting it, he didn’t even get to play at. As a teen, he earned $10 a gig to set up gear for a band that played five shows every weekend.

The young guitarist learned hundreds of songs that way, just by ear. Russell soon made a name for himself as a sideman. He worked as a freelancer 25 nights a month for years, flying all over the country and playing orchestral swing, country, jazz, rock, Hasidic music, Salsa, Greek, and more. Whenever a band got a request that they didn’t know, Russell did. “I got a nick name as the Hitman because I knew all the hits,” he said.

He could play anything professionally, but for fun, Russell played blues. When he showed up for jam sessions at the Chicago Blues Club wearing a tux and hat, the jam co-host would yell, “It’s Hitman Russ!” When Russell finally got a chance to build his dream project, it could only be called The Hitman Blues Band. 7 albums and countless tours later, thousands of fans confirm it was the right choice.

Twenty-six of the duo's 1964-1967 recordings (five previously unissued) for the Kent and Modern labels are on this compilation. Note, however, that this is just a partial retrospective of their mid-'60s work, since during this time the Turners were also releasing sides on several different other labels. It remains, though, a good sampling of their sound during this era, when their soul tracks still betrayed much of their blues/R&B roots, and before the arrangements had gotten as heavy and beefy as they would in the late '60s and early '70s. Tina Turner's vocals are unflaggingly enthusiastic and committed, if perhaps not as nuanced as they could be.

What keeps this from the top rank of mid-'60s soul, however, is the largely average, occasionally below average material (mostly written by Ike Turner). It's often a collision of blues, chitlin circuit R&B, and brassy pop-soul that sounds a bit dashed off. There are some ace moments along the way, of course, like the infectious "I Can't Believe What You Say," the down-and-bluesy "Hurt Is All You Gave Me," and the swaggering soul-swing shuffle of "Chicken Shack." Ike Turner's twangy guitar seems underutilized for much of the set, and there's very little of the vocal sparring that would be such a big part of their act by the early '70s.

Tina Turner goes into a big rap on the previously unissued "All I Could Do Was Cry" where she really overdoes the raspy breast-beating; Etta James' more famous version has a big edge. "Give Me Your Love" is minor-keyed blues/R&B that's not too far from Otis Rush territory; at the other extreme, "Makin' Plans Together" has gossamer strings typical of the New York pop-soul on the Scepter/Wand labels. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

At first glance, BB King may seem somewhat indecisive. For instance, he announced that he would never again perform live, onlyto be convinced later to go on a world tour. Whatever the case,this giant from Indianola, Mississippi, is a pioneer of the blues and in a class of his own. With his guitar, which he has named Lucille, he has created countless classics. In 1988, he recorded the song When Love Comes to Town with the pop band U2 and he now has a following among a younger generation of fans. In 2000, his duo album Riding with the King, recorded with close friend and fan Eric Clapton, became a huge hit. BB King recorded his first album in 1949 and 60 years later he is still going strong. According to the critics, his most recent album One Kind Favor, released last year, is his best work in years. BBKing's voice is still deep and dark with a catch in it and his guitar solos are recognizable among thousands. Recently, a museum in his birthplace was dedicated to this living blues legend. The museum not only pays tribute to the man but to the whole genre as well. BB King is the blues personified.

Although born and raised in Richmond, California, Andre's French-Kreole heritage is deeply rooted in Louisiana. He embarked on a path with specific knowledge and extraordinary talents at a very young age. True to his culture and love of music, he has crafted a career well beyond his years as an artist.

Andre grew up experiencing the French Kreole (La-La) dances his grandparents held at their church parish, St. Mark's Catholic Church. The best Zydeco musicians Louisiana had to offer traveled to California to play at these dances. The exposure allowed him to develop his love for traditional French Kreole music. Andre regularly played with visiting bands, such as the late John Delafose and many local Zydeco and Cajun bands, including the late Danny Poullard (California Cajun Orchestra). By age twelve, Andre formed his band, "Zydeco Magic." Andre is self-taught and constantly increases his repertoire.

In his 30's, he had already been deemed a legend. There is widespread agreement that he is an exceptional, multi-dimensional musician with a finely honed ability to merge his accordions with musical mastery.

The Washington Post called Andre "A master at pumping out fast, funky rhythms on an instrument not usually associated with earthy syncopation. A versatile student of the music, Thierry can't be lumped into Zydeco's old-school R&B-influenced camp or its nouveau, rap-inspired one: He and his band lay down both soulful, traditional slow-dances and bottom-end-booming kinetic groovers."

Michael Tisserand, author of The Kingdom of Zydeco, considered the definitive book on the history of Zydeco music, wrote,"In America, great migrations produce great music. Just as Delta musicians took Highway 61 to Chicago and electrified their blues, so did the Kreoles and Cajuns migrate to California and establish vital dance communities. Now the California scenes rival anything back home in Louisiana, and that's due to players like Andre Thierry, a standard-bearer for the new generation. Thierry is among the best of both the West Coast and the Gulf Coast, and he combines youthful vigor with a mature appreciation for his inherited tradition."

Andre's style isn't conventional; he and his accordions provide a signature sound by creating magnetic, sonic landscapes. The rhythmic songs drive an atmospheric blend, giving his band a powerful edge, naturally building a dedicated following through performing, touring, and a string of album recordings like "It's About Time," "A Whole Lotta Somthin" and "Are You Ready To Learn".

Thierry leaves his musical imprints on recordings like "Live! At the Woodshop", "Kreole United, Non-Jamais Fait" and "Kreole United, Tu Kekchause A' Korrek", even when singing, songwriting, and producing with a collective of artists, while their contributions are discernible.

In his "Bouncin With The Blues" album, Thierry performs songs written or popularized by music legends: Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Albert King, and Clifton Chenier. Breaking all accordion stereotypes, unforgettable performances with Sammy Hagar (gritty hard Rocker) and David Hildago (influential Latin singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist) showcased fabulous fusion with Andre in his musical zone and pumping genre-bending sounds.

The Accordion defies all national and continental borders. Andre Thierry was the first American artist to perform in the Akkordeonale, International Festival (Program 2016). Veteran rock ‘n’ rollers with the blues in their hearts, The Name Droppers, have toured the world backing blues rock guitar icon, Johhny Winter, and East Coast legend, Charlie Karp, who earned notoriety as a teenager playing guitar with Buddy Miles. The quartet of guitarist Rafe Klein, Hall of Fame drummer Bobby “T” Torello, Grammy-winning bassist Scott Spray and keyboardist Ron Rifkin joined forces in 2019 and are set to release their third album, Blue Diamonds. The collection of muscular tunes comprises seven new originals including a song dedicated to Ukraine along with two beloved blues classics and a bonus live track. The guests on the project included guitarists Al Ferrante and Jay Willie, vocalists Heather Joseph, Simone Brown, Carol Sylvan, and the entire Horizon Music Choir, with Bill Holloman (Chic, Danny Gatton) adding saxophone and original Paul Butterfield Blues Band keyboardist Mark Naftalin sitting in on piano.

Jersey shore rocker, “Blue Diamonds,” opens the set with Klein lamenting how his substance abuse led to losing his lady love. Bobby T leads the crew thru the scathing rebuke of heartbreaker fashioned over a Chicago Blues riff “Hollywood.” The sentimental 12-bar blues “Just Come Home,” has Holloman’s mournful tenor echoing Klein’s pleading vocals. The quartet burns through Bobby “Blue” Bland standard “Further On Up The Road,” with flair, dropping in a little nod to other oft played chestnuts like the seasoned pros they are. Jay Willie shows off his skill at slide guitar and Johnny Winter influence while Bobby T name checks several Windy City landmarks on the Bo Diddley Beat road trip ramble “Back To Chicago.”

The bittersweet soul ballad, “New York,” is a gritty Brill Building Pop throwback. The legend Charlie Karp reappears from the great beyond to play lead guitar on “Red House,” a session saved from the vaults and posthumously released here in tribute to a dear departed friend and consummate bluesman. The Name Droppers, angered by what is happening in Ukraine, decided to write a song to express their solidarity with the people of that country. The symphonic blues rocker “Ukraine We Stand,” was released as a single with proceeds going to charities in Ukraine to aid refugees fleeing the country. Brooklyn born Carole Sylvan lends her sought after vocals to the bumping shuffle, “Are You Lonely?,” and Willie drops in more great slide guitar for good measure.

The showstopper fan favorite rock ‘n’ roll number, “Blue Guitar,” gives us a taste of The Name Droppers live show and possibly a hopeful glimpse at the follow up album to Blue Diamonds. ~Rick J Bowen

Singer and guitar player Bill Abel from the Clarksdale Mississippi area is a torch  bearer of the gritty unorthodoxed modern day juke joint sound that originates from  the Mississippi Delta. Born and raised in the small delta town of Belzoni, Bill  learned his blues first hand from the musicians he played with which are a who's  who list of delta legends that include Paul “Wine Jones”, Cadillac John Nolden, T  Model Ford, Honey Boy Edwards and many others. He defies most blues  categories  with a hard driving electrified country blues, a sound that is rarely heard  today. "Soothing" is not a word normally associated with blues, but its the word that best captures the experience of listening to Charles Brown, and Honey Dripper is no exception. Listening to it is like sipping a fine bottle of cognac. Seventy-two years old at the time of this recording session, Brown sounds agile, almost ageless. Indeed, time seems to stand still when he plays and sings in that same understated, urbane manner he popularized with Johnny Moore's Three Blazers back in the 1940s.

The Silvertones: Texas Blues is a band that been a staple in the North Texas Music scene for over 27 years. Founded in 1993 by Brian Wicker and Kyle Copeland. The original line-up included Joe Williams (bass), Brent Childers (drums) and Bill Jones (vocals). Their inaugural gig was at The Filling Station in Terrell, Texas. Like many bands, The Silvertones have had several line-up changes throughout the years. One of the most influential Silvertones members was Walter Delesandri on lead guitar. Sadly, Walt passed away in 2003 from a massive heart attack and he is still greatly missed.

Each member that has moved through the band brought their own style, soul & contributed their talents to The Silvertones reputation as a “killer” live blues band, in addition to being a four-time winner of the Dallas Observer Best Blues Band award. Since 2012, the band's lineup has solidified with original member and founder, Brian Wicker on bass, Randy Ball on drums, Leo De La Vega on guitar, and Rob Donavan on lead guitar. The Silvertones’ set-list, with about half being original, reflects the various influences that the band members grew up listening to. Their sound is primarily blues, with a hint of jazz, and an infusion of swing, rockabilly, and rock & roll.

Averaging 80 gigs a year, you can see The Silvertones live at Dallas and Fort Worth music festivals, clubs, restaurants, and even at Fort Worth Swing Dance Society dances. The Silvertones, to date, have recorded five CDs starting with their freshman album, Cruisin, self-produced in 1999, Hot in The Hole, recorded live in July 2002 at The Hole in the Wall in Dallas, Texas. In 2005, The Silvertones signed with Deep South Productions in Austin and recorded Ride in My Cadillac in 2005, You Got Me Spinning in 2011, and Silvertone Avenue in 2014.

The Artwoods were every bit the rivals of such bands as the Animals and the Spencer Davis Group, but never saw the success as a recording act that either of them enjoyed. Rather, their following was confined to the clubs they played, despite releasing a half-dozen singles and an LP during their four years together. Art Wood, the older brother of Ron Wood, had been involved with the London blues scene almost from the beginning, as an original member of Blues Incorporated, the pioneering blues/R&B outfit founded by Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies. He was the backup rhythm singer in the band's early lineup, before the split between Davies and Korner (and prior to their recording their one and only album); he also had a group of his own that he fronted on the side, called the Art Woods Combo. They later became the Artwoods in 1963 and Jon Lord later joined along with guitarist Derek Griffiths, after their own earlier band, Red Bludd's Bluesicians, split up.

The group's decision to turn professional in 1964 required a new drummer and Keef Hartley was recruited by way of an ad in Melody Maker magazine. For their bassist, they raided Malcolm Pool from the Roadrunners lineup. In the booming London music scene, getting a recording contract was relatively easy - labels were signing everything in sight that could make a noise that sounded like music - and they joined Decca Records' roster in 1964. The Artwoods' early records are some of the most fondly remembered British R&B singles, rivals to the work of the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, or, ironically enough, the Birds, the outfit of which Art Wood's younger brother Ron Wood was a member. Their sound was as steeped in soul and funk as it was in blues, which set them apart from many of their rivals.

What's more, they were good at it, with a natural feel for the music and even capable of writing decent originals, which graced the B-sides of their singles. And they had a virtuoso lineup: Jon Lord's piano and organ sound was a great complement to Wood's singing, Derek Griffiths' guitar work was tastefully flashy, and Keef Hartley was animated as well as powerful, with a bigger sound on the drums than, say, Jim McCarty of the Yardbirds. All of these attributes made the Artwoods a top stage attraction. Club audiences always knew they were good for a great show and the band loved playing live. Ultimately, in fact, the group's success in touring and their love of playing live may have hurt them. They had no problem playing hundreds of gigs a year at venues like Klooks Kleek in Hampstead and dozens of lesser clubs for the sheer enjoyment of it, but they earned relatively little money doing it.

At the same time, their singles never seemed to connect, despite appearances on programs like Ready, Steady, Go! and other television venues promoting them. Their failure as a recording outfit is inexplicable upon hearing the singles - they weren't strong songwriters, to be sure, but when covering American-style R&B, their records were soulful, funky, and played not only well but inventively; close your eyes and it seems like they were the U.K. answer to Booker T. & the MG's. And the vocals - if not as charismatic as what Eric Burdon, Mick Jagger, or Paul Jones were doing with their respective bands - were attractive and memorable and sounded authentically American. And, in contrast to a lot of other British bands of that period, they did manage to capture something of their live sound on those records, which made them very potent. In fairness, Decca even allowed them to cut a complete LP despite their lack of chart success, but the quintet never broke through.

Like the Action, another U.K. R&B outfit that made great records that never got heard, the Artwoods never did more than amaze audiences one club at a time and leave behind some great music to be found by pop culture archivists. A series of label switches in 1967 to Parlophone and then Fontana gave them some furtive success on the continent (in Denmark, of all places) and after four years of hard work, the Artwoods called it quits after a brief foray under the name the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Keef Hartley was the first to go, heading to John Mayall's band (Macolm Pool followed his lead) and then into his own group, while Jon Lord, who had dabbled in studio outfits like Santa Barbara Machinehead, took up an offer from ex-Searcher Chris Curtis to join a group called Roundabout, which evolved into Deep Purple.

Art Wood himself never left music, despite the disappointment inherent in the Artwoods. Like such older contemporaries as Alexis Korner, he made the occasional recording and was one of the members of the revived Downliners Sect during the 1980s and 1990s. /Biography by Bruce Eder, AllMusic

This album is subtitled "The Live Collection", and while that may sound a little ominous, "Mojo" is certainly not a second-rate collection of hap-hazardly chosen live performances. On the contrary, these are some of the very best live recordings of Muddy Waters ever available.

Superbly remastered, "Mojo" features excellent sound, capturing Muddy Waters in Washington and Oregon in 1971, and in Switzerland in 1976, a total of 74 minutes of music.
The core of the Muddy Waters Band is in place on both the '71 and the '76 recordings, veteran blues drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and pianist Joe "Pinetop" Perkins, and harp duties are more than ably handled by George "Harmonica" Smith and Jerry Portnoy respectively. Muddy himself is in excellent form, and the track list is superb...tough, swinging renditions of Muddy Waters' best-known songs, and numerous lesser-known but equally fabulous ones as well.
"Mojo" opens with a terrific, muscular rendition of "Rollin' And Tumblin'", after which it goes from highlight to highlight: "Got My Mojo Working", a lean, mean rendition of "Walkin' Blues", a slow, soulful "Howlin' Wolf", and an interesting, minor-note flavoured "Mannish Boy", which owes a lot to the huge pocket of the drummer who makes the five-minute, one-chord song into the powerhouse that it is.

The great Willie "Big Eyes" Smith lays down a deep groove with his energetic, versatile playing, and the interaction between the rhythm section and Pinetop Perkins is worth noticing as well; Perkins contributes mightily to the magnificent swinging feel of songs like "Crawlin' King Snake", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Walkin' Thru The Park", and "Rollin' And Tumblin'", and his solo on "Can't Get No Grindin' (what's the matter with the mill)" completely takes over the track, even though it gets stiff competition from Jerry Portnoy's harp solo and a fiery guitar solo by Bob Margolin. And Luther Johnson shines on a rough, tough rendition of "Dust My Broom", doing the lead vocals while Muddy Waters plays the howling slide guitar.

The sound, the material, and the musicianship make this one of the finest live blues albums I have ever heard, and a worthy companion to the classic "Muddy Waters At Newport".

Norbert Egger (born October 14, 1956 in Rielasingen) is a German blues musician , author, radio host and entrepreneur.

In 1968, Egger heard recordings of BB King and Muddy Waters on the radio. This experience and reading a book by Nat Hentoff about blues and jazz as well as the contributions of the music journalist Joachim-Ernst Berendt inspired him for the blues. He bought a blues harp and a guitar and taught himself to play. After graduating from high school in Singen (1975), he was a regular soldier in the Bundeswehr until 1981, ultimately with the rank of officer.

In 1979 Norbert Egger co-founded the band City Blues Connection in Hamburg, which he considers his main musical project. In this formation he acts as lead singer and slide guitarist. He gave many club concerts with her in the 1980s, for example at Onkel Pö and appeared at festivals, including Tanz auf dem Vulkan, a music event organized by the anti-nuclear movement in Gorleben with 10,000 visitors. The German Blues Circle, an important music medium for blues in Germany at the time, had already praised Egger's playing of the slide guitar as a leader in Germany a year earlier. As leader of this band, he released six albums - one with Louisiana Red - and one double album between 1979 and 2019, as well as several EPs and singles. Since 1982 he has also been the creator of the side project Natural Blues, which released two albums in 2021. Some EPs are added.

Between 1985 and 2015 Egger appeared only sporadically. He cited personal setbacks as the reason for this. These included the theft of instruments and equipment from his mobile recording studio or conflicts with insurers, music managers and music producers.

From 2015, musical activities increased again. Egger rehearsed and performed again with City Blues Connection, which he expanded into a Rhythm and Blues Big Band of around 20 musicians.
