7. Whirlwind (4:52)
8. Listen Baby (4:35)
9. Love's Sweet Secrets (3:12)
10. Little Red Rooster (6:30)

Inarguably the best-known recorded performances by Grammy-winning harmonicist Sugar Blue are his two appearances on the Rolling Stones' Some Girls in 1977 - in particular on the hit "Miss You." (Mick Jagger found him busking on a Paris street.) That said, Blue has become a superstar and first-call sideman who has worked with everyone from Paul Horn, Hiram Bullock, Stan Getz, Prince, and Bob Dylan to Willie Dixon, Son Seals, Johnny Shines, and Shemekia Copeland, to name a few.

He is among the foremost electric harpists of the modern era. Given his proficiency as an improviser and his high-register runs, circular breathing, and electronic effects, Sugar Blue is regarded by music journalists as "the Jimi Hendrix of the harmonica" and a "harp pyrotechnician." Though he records infrequently as a leader, his 1979 debut Crossroads and 1994's In Your Eyes, are regarded as essential modern electric blues offerings. His 2012 live date, Raw Sugar from Beeble Music, is among the first harmonica blues "essentials" of the 21st century. In 2016, Blue issued the charting Blue Voyage.

Sugar Blue was born James Whiting in New York City in 1950. The son of a singer/dancer who regularly performed at the legendary Apollo Theater, he was given his first harmonica at the age of ten, and by his mid-teens had already performed in the company of Muddy Waters; in the early '70s he made his first recordings, sitting in on sessions by the likes of Johnny Shines and Louisiana Red. Sugar Blue relocated to Paris in 1976, where he was introduced to the Rolling Stones; he went on to play on the group's LPs Some Girls, Emotional Rescue, and Tattoo You, lending his skills to such hits as "Miss You."

He also played on jazz dates for Stan Getz and Paul Horn, and in 1979 cut the solo efforts Crossroads and From Paris to Chicago in 1982. In 1985, Blue won a Grammy Award for his participation on the Atlantic compilation Blues Explosion. Upon returning to the U.S. in the mid-'80s, Sugar Blue settled in Chicago, and after signing to Alligator, he cut Blue Blazes in 1994, followed a year later by In Your Eyes. Over the coming years he continued to perform and tour, though it would be 12 years before his next album, 2007's Code Blue, was released. Threshold appeared in 2010, followed two years later by the live album Raw Sugar.

2016 would prove to be a banner year for the veteran bluesman, with the release of a new studio album called Voyage, a world tour, and an appearance in the documentary film Sidemen, A Long Road to Glory. Restlessness is a chronic state for Blue, who continually seeks new sounds and studios to record in. For 2019's Colors, he wrote and recorded on four continents, U.S. (Chicago), China (Beijing), Europe (Italy), and Africa (South Africa). /Biography by Jason Ankeny, AllMusic

Texan Albert Collins was in the very first rank of post-war blues guitarists. This two-CD set is a reissue of all 36 sides he cut for Imperial from 1968 to 1970, representing this artist's second major recording stint. Instrumentals comprise roughly three-fourths of the material. They frame his distinctive guitar work with a tight ensemble of organ, bass, and drums, adding at times a piano and/or second guitar, punctuated by a horn section.

About ten of these tunes are as great as anything Collins ever did. They are riddled with the biting, incisive, dramatic, and economical playing that made him a legend. There are also some outstanding vocals. Although this set is not without its clinkers, it is a solid package and a must for any Collins fan. /Larry Hoffman, AllMusic

She recorded 2 CD's in Europe with Nick Becattini: "Nick & Peaches - Live at Blue Sun" (2001) and "Time Will Tell" (2005). Peaches Staten offers a thrilling mixture of gritty vocals and explosive personality that pulls you into her inner circle, harmoniously delivered in her music deeply rooted in blues and soul with a splash of funk. Real R&B well supported by a very tight band.

Peaches signature and unmistakable sound comes from her playing the Frottoir, and she is an incredibly talented player and surprises the audience when she plays it on boogie blues tunes. She is the last blues artist to do a live recording at the original Buddy Guy's Legends, and her latest CD "Live At Legends" on Swississippi Records got great reviews. Peaches Staten is a product of the Mississippi Delta, and though she was born in Doddsville she grew up in the mix of the thriving Chicago blues scene and was raised on gospel, blues and soul.

Gwyn Ashton - Grease Bucket

4. Green Light Blues (4:43)
5. When The Well Runs Dry (2:42)

7. Somebody (4:08)
8. Self-Isolation Blues (3:33)
9. Down & Dirty (3:50)
10. Blues For The Tortured Soul (4:05)

Gwyn Ashton is a bit of a maverick, a nomadic troubadour, born in Wales, raised in Australia, and on the road ever since. "Grease Bucket" is visceral, as raw as feasting on bloodied steak. Ten totally original blues tracks, for tortured souls, with Aussie bassist Chris Lambden and drummer Paul Wheeler. Brace yourself to be blitzed in the Ashton liquidiser. Thumping drums, a filthy five-string ’60s guitar, and thundering bass open "Something the Cat Dragged In" – a serious night on the tiles. It’s rock ’n’ roll, daytime is for sleeping it off. Guaranteed to wake you up. They slip straight into the funk groove of "Howling at the Moon", full of heavy bass riffs and howling slide. Guest organist Jesse Deane Freeman steps up for "Green Light Blues" - green means go, but it’s the end of the road – a more soulful shade of blues.

Seriously fuzzed-up lap steel assaults our ears in the swaggering "When the Well Runs Dry". Vocals are delivered punk-rap style, but ask yourself: what are you gonna do when the money runs out? Savage but addictive. Drums bring in the Cream-like "Somebody" – a great slice of rock-blues, with insistent, punchy rhythm, and guitar and slide as raw as a paper cut. A brilliant, unmissable track. Hard-edged as a knuckle sandwich, "Self-Isolation Blues" may feel a bit behind the times now, but it’s in yer face and impossible to ignore. Ashton sees the coast is clear: time to get "Down and Dirty". The title sums it up – it’s about grabbing the moment when it’s presented, and yes, we’re talking s-e-x. Wonderfully filthy slide and greasy lyrics.

The album closes with "Blues for the Tortured Soul" – solid, driving rhythm, plastered with plenty of slide-edged guitar. A strong finale to what is probably Ashton’s best album to date. Ashton has recorded with with Rory Gallaghers band, played with Robert Plants, and worked through a bucket-list of rock-band musicians. On this album he leaves nothing out: playful lyrics delivered like custard pies, mean guitar riffs filling your mind – a full-on assault. Gwyn Ashton has created an excellent, seismic record. /Graham Munn, Slap Mag

10. Nobody & You (4:00)
11. Bedroom Eyes (3:52)
12. How Do I Know (3:06)

Bio Chicago blues ‘triple threat’ (slide guitar, harmonica and vocals) Nigel Mack delivers a high-energy show that fuses blues classics with the punch of contemporary original blues. Seamlessly switching between instruments, Nigel Mack is equally proficient at them all. These are talents honed by years of relentless touring in support of his four critically-acclaimed releases; Back In Style, Devil’s Secrets, Road Rage and High Price to Play. Nigel’s new all-original album, Back In Style is receiving glowing reviews and attained #1 on the RMR Contemporary Blues Charts! His previous release, Devil’s Secrets, reached #1 on the Canadian blues charts and won ‘Best Self-Produced CD’ from the Windy City Blues Society, in Chicago.

Mack’s original compositions have been featured on television sound-tracks ‘Dawson’s Creek’, ‘The Street’ and ‘Time of Your Life’.

Nigel Mack has been living in Chicago, IL since 2003 and performing in the ‘the home of the blues’, since 1992. Over the years ‘Nigel Mack Blues Attack’ have logged over a million miles across North America and Europe and headlined top blues venues throughout. They have appeared at the world famous ‘Chicago Blues Festival’ six times and toured virtually every one of the United States and most of Canada. Mack’s dynamic stage show is a favorite at clubs and festivals everywhere.

Nigel grew up in Saskatoon, Canada, listening to the music of the ‘60’s, Bebop jazz and Big Bands emanating from his Dad’s stereo. Saskatoon’s university and location guaranteed that everybody touring western Canada played there. The types of artists were varied and eclectic: Muddy Waters, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Stevie Ray Vaughan, just to name a few.

The ‘blues explosion’ in the mid-eighties led to a weekly gig at ‘Buds on Broadway’, which featured touring blues artists from all over. As Saturday jam session host, Nigel met and performed with blues legends such as Eddy Shaw, Phil Guy, Amos Garrett, Brent Parkin and Big Dave Mclean.

In the spring of 1988 Nigel and his band relocated to the musical hotbed, Vancouver, BC. From this west coast base Mack built a strong local following and toured around western Canada.

In 1992, Nigel received a call from Chicago blues band leader Eddie Lusk inviting him to perform during the Chicago Blues Festival with ‘The Professor’s Blues Revue’. Nigel seized the opportunity and began touring the US with a vengeance, racking up seventeen American/Canadian coast to coast tours over the next ten years.

1996 saw the release of Mack’s first full length all-original CD High Price to Play. It garnered critical acclaim, a nomination for ‘Best Blues/R&B Album’ at the 1997 ‘West Coast Music Awards’ and three songs on major TV sound tracks!

Nigel Mack followed High Price to Play with Road Rage, released in 2001. Essentially a live album, Road Rage blends blues classics with original songs and three studio tracks. It continues to be a favorite among fans.

When not touring, Nigel spends the majority of time recording and performing in and around Chicago. A decade earlier, the seeds of this move had been planted. On that first trip, Eddie Lusk had said, “This is where you should be!” With the release of ‘Back In Style’, his chart-topping, all-original album, Nigel Mack is building on past successes and bringing his own brand of Chicago blues to a new generation of blues fans.

‘Nigel Mack Blues Attack’ are sure to put on a high-powered show that you will remember for a long time!

While most people associate the blues with the steamy bayous of Louisiana and the cotton fields of Mississippi there is also a thriving blues scene in Scandinavia. In the heart of this Nordic blues explosion is the Wentus Blues Band from the town of Kokkola in central Finland. And while the pine studded wilderness of their homeland is about as far as you can get from the juke joints of the Deep South, there’s no doubt about their musical credentials.

Established in 1986, the band has acquired a reputation as the hardest working blues band in Scandinavia and they have played over 2.000 gigs around Europe. Wentus Blues Band has toured in fourteen countries, released seven albums, done several TV-shows, headlined festivals and toured with many great bluesmen like Duke Robillard, Mick Taylor, Carey Bell and Louisiana Red, just to mention a few.

In 1993, Wentus Blues Band met Swedish blues and folk musician Pelle Lindström from Leksand, Sweden, at a gig in Sundsvall. Three years later they invited Pelle to Finland for week-long tour as a special guest with the band. Since then, Pelle has performed occasionally with the band and done tours in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Due to the big success live, they went to the Church Garden Studios in Örnsköldsvik and recorded live some of the favourite rhythm 'n' blues songs from their repertoaire.

The Chicago Blue Stars were Charlie Musselwhite's road and recording band. Musselwhite was signed to a solo contract by Vanguard records, and Blue Thumb signed the band. Because of the contractual split, Musselwhite does not sing as a member of the Chicago Blue Stars, leaving those duties up to the rest of the band members. The band was comprised of a mix of blues legends (Jack Myers, Fred Below) and promising newcomers (Freddie Roulette, Skip Rose) who, in concert, provided a perfect setting for Musselwhite's vigorous harp playing and vocals. The group recorded only one LP for Blue Thumb before dissolving as a unit in 1973 as Musselwhite began changing his band personnel with every subsequent recording.

The album Delta Blues, released exclusively in Germany by the label Auditon bring 10 tracks of the blues rock in the style of great bands of the time and some more pulled towards the conventional and blues. In the instrumental the protagonism is divided between good solos of guitar, piano and harmonica. It is difficult to point out any highlight among the songs, as it is a very solid work with few bad moments, but "Bad News", "I Think Someone Was Lyin'" and the version of the classic "House Of The Risin' Sun" are my favorites. Definitely a good choice for electric blues fans, both for the quality and rarity of the record.

Sparky's raucous guitar and singing styles are a direct result of his having performed in many doo-wop, soul, and rock bands.

Little Joe Blue - Blue And The Blues Are Back

5. Lonesome Feeling (3:24)
6. Wasn't Born Yesterday (3:00)
7. Shopping Instead (4:04)
8. You Got To Come To Me (3:23)

The clincher that puts Little Joe Blue a notch above most B.B. King imitators is the fact that he took the former’s mannerisms and affectations and added a few twists of his own. This made him an extremely emotive original, aside from the fact that he possessed the skills to write uniquely infectious lyrics like the anguished “Dirty work going on” (Movin 1966), the urgent “Standing on the threshold” (Jewel 1968) and the poetic “Give me an hour in your garden” (Miles Ahead 1974). He was born Joseph Valery Jnr. in Vicksburg, Miss. on September 23, 1934 to Abraham Fields and Willie Hodges. He was raised across the Mississippi River in Tallulah, La. through the 1940s then moved to Detroit. As a youngster in Tallulah, Joseph came to be called “Little Joe Blue” because he constantly played Eugene Field’s traditional “Little boy blue” on his harmonica. His first encounters with the blues were in Vicksburg at the Green Lantern dance hall where he snuck around the back and peeked in the door. Jimmy Liggins and T-Bone Walker, among others, played there. From 1951-53 he served in the U.S. Army and was posted out to the Korean front. With a natural propensity to use his hands, he worked on auto assembly lines before he started (at the urging of his hero B.B. King) entering talent shows and sit-in gigs with local bands as a stand-up singer. One of these gigs involved the great “Bobo” Jenkins from Forkland, Alabama. Around 1958 he formed the Midnighters and worked local niteries like the Apex. After touring clubs and bars in the Reno, Nevada area he moved out to California where he settled in Los Angeles. Now and then he would work clubs like the Tropicana and Skylock.

Accompanied by Johnny Dollar (guitar), Nick Charles (bass) and Roosevelt Shaw (drums), he proposes an almost entirely instrumental album (only two titles sung) in which shines his agile and creative guitar. According to the Blues Discography, he would have participated in another session in Chicago in 1981. It should have given rise to a record issued by Gerim but it never saw the light of the day.

Nigel Egg grew up in England. He became a professional musician at age eight, singing in the Saint George Cathedral choir where he earned sixpence for rehearsal, a shilling for Sunday service and half-a-crown for a funeral.

As time went on, he played in numerous cover bands – blues, rock, country – until one day he wrote a song that people seemed to like.

This was the start of a life-long addiction to writing and performing his own music. Nigel has travelled many miles hoping to create those precious moments when time stops, and the audience and the performer become united in the here and now of the music.

He doesn’t play many clubs these days – he prefers smaller groups of people who really like to play and listen to original music – listening rooms, house concerts, songwriter showcases. And, during daytime hours, senior audiences - click here to see the Senior Music site.

Nigel Egg plays original folk, blues and Americana songs and a very personal collection of soulful American Roots music. His songwriting and his ability to play soulful blues harp and guitar at the same time has won multiple awards from organizations like the Minnesota Folk Festival, the Austin (TX) Songwriters Group and the Telluride (CO) Blues and Brews festival.

Nigel is still trying to find himself through his songwriting and music, but he only seems to get further astray and deeper into the great mystery. The Blues runs deep through these songs and then it pops up ZAP! and it feels like they are all about you, YOUR blues, your life, your something... poignant. The blues has escaped from the museum and this album is destined to become a modern classic!

Chickenbone Slim is an original Blues/Americana touring artist based in San Diego, CA. Signed to VizzTone in 2021, Chickenbone and his band “The Biscuits” have been garnering national and international attention with their unique roots sound. Mixing blues with West Coast swing, rockabilly and roots rock and inspired by local roots artists The Paladins and Candye Kane, the album showcases Chickenbone’s songwriting and the wide range of the band’s talent.

“Damn Good And Ready” which comprises twelve original songs, is Chickenbone Slim’s second VizzTone album and his fifth career album overall. Like his previous album, “Serve It To Me Hot”, it was recorded at producer Kid Andersen’s ultra cool Greaseland Studios in San Jose, California, this time during a week of bomb cyclone rainfall! The first single “Rock and Roll Soul” is a roots rock anthem and a love song. Featuring a driving beat and solos courtesy of guitarist Laura Chavez and special guest Eric Spaulding on saxophone, this original song showcases the energy and classic feel of Chickenbone Slim and the Biscuits.

Chickenbone Slim and the Biscuits are a four-piece band that features Larry Teves (Chickenbone Slim) on guitar and vocals, Marty Dodson (Fabulous Thunderbirds) on drums, musical prodigy Justice Guevera on electric and standup bass, and internationally acclaimed Laura Chavez on lead guitar. Laura recently shattered a glass ceiling by becoming the first woman to win the “Best Instrumentalist – Guitar” award at the 2023 Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee. Since her debut as featured guitarist with Candye Kane, Laura has steadily grown to become one of the most respected guitarists in the industry, recently featured on many prominent albums, and touring steadily with Chickenbone Slim plus other artists including Nikki Hill and Vanesssa Collier. /Bluestown Music

Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown was more than just a blues musician, throughout his long career he embraced many of the tributaries of American music. As well as being a superb guitarist, influenced heavily, like B.B. King, on the style of T-Bone Walker, he was also a proficient violin, mandolin, fiddle and harmonica player. This 2 CD set features the A and B side of all his releases between 1947 and 1961 and brings together all of his earliest singles for the Peacock label on one collection.

Despite receiving very little chart success, many of his singles were highly original and are now so famous it becomes difficult to understand why, "Boogie Uproar", "Okie Dokie Stomp", "Gate Walks To Board" and many others were staples for bar bands for years to come and were a huge influence over guitarists like Johnny Winter, Anson Funderburgh and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He didn't like to be called a bluesman but whether he liked it or not, he was undeniably a major influence over the genre throughout his lifetime.

9. Rock Me Mama (4:29)
10. Where Does That Leave Me (4:55)

This concept inspired Delmark to explore the historical recordings made by Jimmy Burns when he was very young. The records were originally released as 45 rpm vinyl split singles, at the time so popular among music fans and venues with jukeboxes. Jimmy also proposed a list of songs he always liked - songs that brought back nice warm memories, such as the two blues: Big Joe Turner’s "World of Trouble", and Lil’ Son Jackson’s "Rock Me Mama", as well as "Express Yourself", a powerful tune by Charles Wright, who was also - like Jimmy - a Clarksdale, Mississippi area native. That’s how Jimmy Burns has come Full Circle.

Soul Message Band is founded on the enduring partnership of Chris Foreman, the Chicago-based and nationally celebrated jazz organist, and the always solid drummer, Greg Rockingham, aka "The Rock". Foreman and Rockingham have an unmistakable chemistry and a 25-year history of collaboration (including groups like the Deep Blue Organ Trio) that has taken them from Chicago to jazz clubs and arenas around the world, both as headliners and as an opening group for Steely Dan. The band adds Chicago veteran guitarist Lee Rothenberg on guitar.

Personnel: Jimmy Burns (guitar, vocals); Lee Rothenberg (guitar); Greg Rockingham (drums); Chris Foreman (organ); Geof Bradfield (saxophone).
