In a short time, the KokoMojo label released four volumes in the "Rock and Roll Vixens" series. When we briefly run through the track list of these albums, you will inevitably come to the following conclusion. Although many African-American singers made fantastic rhythm & blues recordings, only a few could taste the fame. Not that their names sound completely unfamiliar to the ears, nor that now, but the successes to which they were entitled, more or less failed to materialize. However, it is never too late to discover these artists and their songs. That is why a series like "Rock and Roll Vixens" is extremely welcome. Volume 4 also bundles 25 rhythm & blues songs that you must have heard. Even now, well-known and less well-known ladies stand sisterly next to each other. First up is Dakota Staton with "My Babe", a song written by bassist Willie Dixon. Dakota recorded the song for Capitol in 1960 and it now features in the repertoire of many blues bands. The Dakota version does stand out. The performance with a large orchestra gives the song a somewhat jazzy feel. The Bobbettes, known for "I Shot Mr. Lee ", can be heard here with the classic" Have Mercy Baby ". The Dominoes, with Clyde McPhatter as a member, had a number 1 hit with it in 1952. Another classic and often covered is "Jambalaya". Damita Jo adds a huge dose of energy to her Mercury 1962 version. Donna Hightower is known to the general public for her disco hits. Originally Donna was a talented rhythm & blues artist, as evidenced by "Hands Off" from 1955. Less well known is Eunice Davis. In 1955 she recorded the danceable "Let's Have A Party". Fun is undoubtedly "Baby Baby" a "call and response" blues by pianist Katie Webster and Ashton Conroy. Contemporary and back to the party are Bonita & The Blues Shacks with "You Can't Hide", a song they recorded for Rhythm Bomb in 2019. One of the great blues ladies was Etta James with several hits to her name. Here she shines with the swinging "Good Lookin".

In short, volume 4 of "Rock and Roll Vixens" is another album to cherish.
