Stroger was born on a farm outside of Hayti, Missouri, United States, and in 1955 when aged 16 he relocated with his family to Chicago, Illinois. His family settled in an apartment on the West Side in an apartment in the back of Silvio's nightclub. Stroger was inspired by the sights and sounds emanating from the club. Subsequently he was further encouraged to try to have a career in music after being casually employed driving his brother-in-law to play in a blues band alongside J.B. Hutto. Self-taught in the art of guitar playing, Stroger got together a family based band known as the Red Tops, named after wearing black berets with a red circle daubed on top. He moved on to play jazz for a period with Rufus Forman but it was his meeting with Eddie King which started his lengthy career playing blues. Having now adopted playing bass guitar, Stroger played on King's single "Love You Baby" (1965). He backed King for fifteen years before King relocated which caused Stroger to stop his playing for a couple of years.

His interest was rekindled when he was recommended to Otis Rush, whom he backed in the late 1970s and 1980s. He toured Europe with Rush and played on a couple of his albums, "Live in Europe" and "Lost in the Blues". Stroger then became a session musician for a while, and worked with Sunnyland Slim and Mississippi Heat during the late 1980s and early 1990s before joining Odie Payne as the regular rhythm section for the series of American Blues Folk Festivals. Encouraged by Sunnyland Slim, Stroger began singing and writing his own material. In 1996, Stroger played on Mark Hummel's album "Heart of Chicago", and in 1997 he played bass on Golden "Big" Wheeler's album "Jump In". The following year, Stroger played with a group of musicians at the Lucerne Blues Festival in Switzerland. This led to the recording of his debut solo album "In the House: Live at Lucerne Vol. 1" where he was accompanied by Ken Saydak and Billy Flynn. In 2011, the Blues Foundation presented Stroger with a Blues Music Award in the Best Blues Bassist category, and he took home the Best Bassist Award again in 2013.

Louisiana Red is a spontaneous kind of guy. He never writes any of his songs on paper, even for a recording session. The five British musicians who backed him on this release knew nothing of Red's intentions when they entered the studio. Red's extemporaneous approach could have spelled disaster, but it actually enhances this album. There's a loose jam-oriented feel to the recording, making it the blues equivalent of a Grateful Dead album.

Born Iverson Minter in Vicksburg, Miss., Louisiana Red never knew his mother. She died of pneumonia one week after Red was born. When Red was age five, the Ku Klux Klan murdered his father. Red was forced to move in with an aunt in Pittsburgh, where his uncle beat him relentlessly. Given his hellish childhood, it’s no wonder Louisiana Red decided to move to Europe as an adult. He’s resided in Germany since the 1980s, and he’s now a fixture on the European blues circuit.

Red’s attitude is amazing given his history, and his engaging personality comes shining through on this disk, recorded in 1990 in England and just recently released in the States. Muddy Waters was Louisiana Red's mentor, so his music is strongly influenced by Chicago blues. Always Played the Blues features the double-guitar attack of Red and British axeman Richard Sudholme, and it's a fine raucous effort. Red also plays harmonica and sings, while talented New Orleans-based pianist Jon Cleary delivers a surprising Otis Spann-like performance.

Some of these 12 songs are much lengthier than your average blues tunes, but the musicians play then with raw intensity, so they never grow tedious. Highlights include "Sun Goes Down," a rowdy boogie, and "Hello, Mean Old World," an emotive slow tune with some nice slide playing by Red. Louisiana saves his best for the final two cuts. "Feeling Inside" is a jaunty feel-good tune with an irresistible rock 'n roll backbeat. "Mambo Mumbo" is a danceable New Orleans-style instrumental on which Cleary delivers his usual Professor Longhair-like performance. ~Ed Kopp

This raw, extremely eclectic, and quirky disc works on many levels, and the natural energy of Louisiana Red comes through with the high emotion this performer brings to each session. His highly unpredictable guitar playing never fails the song, and in fact adds additional layers by being outside the anticipated (listen to "Where's My Friends?"). His singing is strong and does not always follow what you are expecting. A cut that contains some beautiful vocal work is "Sleep Little Robert." This disc was recorded in Woodstock, NY, at the studio of Levon Helm (the Band). Red is backed by a strong contingent of the musicians who inhabit this celebrated town, including Helm, handling the drums with his usual funk and drive. There is some stellar work by Garth Hudson on organ and sax, David Maxwell on piano and organ, and guitarists Jimmy Vivino and Brian Bisesi on the majority of the cuts. There are also a couple of cuts where Red gets to show off his acoustic chops; of particular note is "Laundromat Blues," where his work on the acoustic slide guitar just makes one step back and listen. Most of the disc is in the electric mode, however, and he takes off time and time again with scorching electric slide guitar work punctuating his tough vocal delivery. He was born Iverson Minter in 1932, and that is why you will see that name accompanying all the songs that he wrote on the disc (everything except "Laundromat Blues"). This is a disc filled with great surprises and deserves a good hard listen, as there is some outstanding work here. ~Bob Gottlieb

The Gypsy Sons - 2 albums: Wash / Whiskey & The Devil

Johnny "The Hammer" Aguon’s band, Dead White and Blue, which was on the brink of releasing its debut major label, Rick Parashar produced album, with MCA Record got lost in the shuffle when MCA was bought out, and a great majority of their cataloged acts were cut loose. For the next few years, he toured, recorded and performed in one band after another until he found himself owning and operating Selma Studios in Hollywood, California. After a few stints as a sideman and store owner, Johnny decided to take a new direction in music, and start up a hard-rock country band, he called The Gypsy Sons. The problem was, he needed to find like-minded musicians to help develop the sound of the band. Aguon, a Northern Virginia native who lived in LA, began to realize that perhaps coming back to his roots would be the best platform for such a band. After touring the west coast with his new act, Hammer began filling the calendar with east coast tour dates. However, unable to convince his rhythm section to make the trip, he was forced to find other musicians.

A few months later, The Gypsy Sons went to play in front of Sony Music executives at a showcase in Nashville, Tennessee with a country band fronted by Eric King, a VA native formerly from the blues act Eric King and the Thin Line who had drawn some interest from Sony. No deals were made for either band as a result of this showcase; however, it changed the course of The Gypsy Sons for good.

Fast forward 100+ shows and 100,000 miles…the band was taking a hiatus and looking for a drummer. Gies was depressed, King was burned out, and Aguon was starting up a side project called American Günn that he somehow convinced Gies to join him in. These times were jokingly referred to as “The Therapy Sessions.” American Günn arranged to rehearse at the brand new Crashbox Rehearsal and Recording Studios in Sterling, Virginia. Coincidently, Dave Maguire was the owner of Crashbox, and as fate would have it he became the drummer for The Gypsy Sons within a month. The rest as they say is history in the making.

Rickey Godfrey - 2 albums: Nasty Man / Once In A Lifetime Love

Rickey was born in Greenville S.C. in 1956 the third of four children. His musical training began at the age of 7 while attending the South Carolina School For The Blind. He studied classical piano and voice and in 1970 began guitar lessons as well. In 1972 he joined his first band “The Fresh Licks”, a rock band that won the 1972 South Carolina Battle Of The Bands. In 1974 Rickey and his brother Ronnie, formed their own band “Garfeel Ruff” and were signed to Capitol Records in 1979. While with Capitol, Garfeel Ruff scored and played most of the soundtrack for the movie “The Hitter”. In 1979, The Garfeel Ruff Band also released an album on Capitol Records entitled “Garfeel Ruff”, which went to number two that year on the Carolina upstate rock charts. A few years later some material recorded in 1979 was released on another Garfeel Ruff album entitled “Born To Play” which was wildly received by their fans. In 1984 Rickey released a solo album, “Let The Big Dog Eat”, which sold well in the Southeast. During the mid 80’s Rickey teamed up with boogie pianist, Rudy Blue Shoes Wyatt, and he played on an ADDY Award winning jingle for Foto-Mat. Rickey also played on studio recordings with Sonny Turner, Anita Ward, Bill Pinkey, and Clifford Curry. Interest from record labels led Rickey to move to Nashville in 1993. Once in Nashville, Rickey began working with artists Donna Fargo, Rufus Thomas, Junior Walker, Sam Moore, and Billy Preston. Rickey has performed throughout the US, Canada and Europe, and has become well known in Nashville for his outstanding musical abilities. In 1994 he played with “The Amy Watkins Band” as they won the Nashville Music City Unsigned Blues Band Competition, in 1997 with another band “The Blues Boyz” won The Pete’s Wicked Ale Blues Competition winning over 35 Nashville area bands. In 1999 Rickey co-wrote “Plumber Man” with Clifford Curry and over the next two years co-wrote produced and played on “She Shot A Hole In My Soul Again” also with Clifford. In 2002 Rickey joined “The SugarBees” a Beach Boogie and Blues Band based in S.C., as lead vocalist. Rickey performed with the band live and recorded with them on several projects. Their cd, “My Baby’s Got It” reached #5 on the Rhythm and Beach charts and the single “Hold You To Your Promise” reached #3. A second single was release by the band entitled “Give It To A Good Man” on the Ripete Records compilation CD “Beach Party” , this CD reached #1 on the Rhythm and Beach charts, and charted at #4 as a single. In February 2003 Rickey teamed up with Greenville SC keyboard player Bobby Simmons, also previously with The SugarBees, and formed The Rickey Godfrey Band. During the summer of 2003 The Rickey Godfrey Band recorded a new single “Can’t Change My Heart” released on Mossland Records, which was voted the #1 breakout song of Fall SOS. “Can’t Change My Heart” reached #1 on the Beach charts in the winter of 2004. In November 2003 Rickey and Andrea Keesee won a Cammy Award for “Best Duo” with the song “Never Let You Go”. In November 2004 “Can’t Change My Heart” won Song of the Year, and Rickey’s 2003 released CD “Soul Sensations” won album of the year. In 2005 Rickey posted 3 additional top 10’s and finished his latest full length project, “Once In A Lifetime Love” released on Mossland Records March 10th. 2006.

In 2002, the original lineup of the Blasters -- vocalist and guitarist Phil Alvin, guitarist Dave Alvin, drummer Bill Bateman, and bassist John Bazz -- reunited to play a few shows to celebrate the release of a retrospective compilation of their recordings for Slash Records. In the grand tradition of giving the public what they want, a year after the original set of five shows had come and gone the reunited Blasters were still playing gigs for their loyal fans, and when Dave Alvin decided to pull the plug on the reunion in August of 2003, he did so in style with a special gig featuring a handful of special guests -- Chicago blues harp master Billy Boy Arnold, rockabilly legend Sonny Burgess, and members of two classic L.A. doo wop groups, the Calvanes and the Medallions. A mobile recording truck and a video crew were on hand to preserve the show for the ages, and the results have been released in both audio and video form as The Blasters Live: Going Home. The CD version has the burden of competing with an earlier live album from the first set of reunion gigs, Trouble Bound, but while Trouble Bound has a slightly higher stomp factor, Going Home finds the band in tighter and leaner form, with pianist Gene Taylor getting a greater chance to strut his stuff and the guests allowing the Blasters to show off the full range of their chops and their influences. Ultimately, both albums document one of America's greatest roots rock bands in its natural environment, on-stage in front of an appreciative audience, and like Trouble Bound, Going Home shows the passage of time hasn't dimmed the Blasters' ability to make with the hard rockin' boogie that made "American music" the stuff of legend around the world. If you dig the Blasters at all, you'll want to hear both discs...and after you do, you'll hope that the Alvin brothers can patch up their differences long enough to take their show on the road again sometime soon. The Porretta Soul Festival is a soul music festival that usually takes place in the third week of July in Rufus Thomas Park in Porretta Terme, in the province of Bologna, Italy.

The festival was started on December 10, 1987 by Graziano Uliani, a passionate soul music fan, who, after attending the events in Macon, Georgia commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the death of Otis Redding, decided to dedicate a festival in his honour.

Thanks to some fortunate encounters, Uliani has been able to bring to Porretta most of the major soul band in the world. Porretta now has a street dedicated to Otis Redding and the park where the Porretta Soul Festival is held is named Rufus Thomas. After more than 20 years, the Porretta Soul Festival is now part of the geography of soul music and is considered the European showcase of the Memphis Sound. The festival is associated with the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis and the Center For Southern Folklore in Memphis.

The Chicago Kingsnakes were formed in 1983 by guitarist / vocalist James Anderson. He started playing guitar at the age of 8 on a homemade instrument crafted from a cigar box, rubber bands and thumb tacks. A lifelong resident of Chicago, he received his musical education on the city's infamous south side, where he played with the likes of guitar greats Buddy Guy, Lefty Dizz and Son Seals, harmonica legends James Cotton and Junior Wells and the Queen of The Blues, Koko Taylor. James has toured the nation with Sun, Chess, Bobbin, Stax and Malaco recording artist Little Milton. Anderson also played guitar with Johnny Twist's Rocka-Boogie Blues Band touring the midwest for three years.

In 1992 The Kingsnakes befriended Byther Smith. The band has become "Smitty's" road band and has accompanied him on tours of the United States, Finland, The Netherlands and Canada. In addition they played on Byther's "I'm A Mad Man" CD on the Bullseye record label. On June 5th 1994 Byther Smith andThe Kingsnakes performed on the Main Stage of the 11th Annual Chicago Bluesfest in Grant Park. This friendship is sustained by occasional tours with Byther. The other musicians in the band have worked with such blues notables as Albert Collins, Freddie King, Lonnie Brooks, Otis Clay, James Cotton, Magic Slim, Cash McCall, and Big Twist & The Mellow Fellows, just to name a few.

In 1998 The Kingsnakes released a CD of original material entitled "Blues Island" . The disk was very well recieved by the press. Blues Revue, a national blues magazine, called Blues Island "Essential". Chicagoland's The Beat, said "Blues Island magnificently captures the live feel and heart of blues in a studio setting".

It may be that with his latest couple of albums Martin Barre is finally exorcising the ghost of Jethro Tull. It can’t be an easy process, distanced from one of rock’s great franchises and ploughing your own furrow. But this is where he is in 2014 and to be frank he’s making the most of it. ‘Order Of Play’ could be seen as the perfect partner to the previous ‘Away With Words’. This time, thankfully, the electric guitar quotient is increased although Barre is still playing in very much a supportive and band context. The addition of Richard Beesley’s sax to old faithfuls like ‘Locomotive Breath’ and ‘Minstrel In The Gallery’ gives them a jazzier feel, and even the cynical will find that – overall – the new arrangements do the songs justice.

This isn’t just an album of Tull covers, though. Martin has seen fit to include ‘Steal Your Heart Away’, ‘Rock Me Baby’, and ‘Crossroads’ to provide balance to what is essentially a superior quality blues rock offering. The album is very well recorded too, also contributing to the fresh feel: it was done live in the studio with no retakes. No doubt all has been carefully road-tested over the past 12 months or so. Dan Crisp doesn’t try to ape the original vocals either, which is also refreshing. This album needs to be assessed, therefore, on its own merits.

Personally, I long for some of the more frenetic/cerebral guitar wig-outs that Barre has played with Tull and also on his earlier solo albums and the word is that his next album will be wholly original. Hopefully it will mark a return to more guitar pyrotechnics and a higher quota of harder rock. For the moment though, it’s time to luxuriate in a super guitarist for whom we have great affection and who is evidently really enjoying his freedom. It speaks volumes that days before the first gigs of his September tour he is rehearsing some new material and – like his albums – the live set-lists are varied and unpredictable. Go and give him your unqualified support. ~David Randall

His musicianship on the lead guitar is totally HOT and BAD TO THE BONE. At the beginning of his 'Sonny's Blues' CD, I thought the first track of 'Drowning on Dry Land' was going to be the beginning of some old blues. But as the tracks played on, it got HOTTER & HOTTER. Moorman totally tore the heck out of 'Crossroads', and 'Rock Me Baby' well all I can say is that the fingers flew all over that guitar neck. "I came to play" says Sonny Moorman. "I was raised in the bars my folks owned in and around Hamilton, OH and got to hear world class artists Lonnie Mack, Cal Collins, Dumpy Rice, Troy Seals, Wayne Perry, and a score of others up close and personal and learned one thing - all the hype in the world doesn't mean a thing unless you can back it up!" Those are words Sonny has lived by through the decades of roadhouses, bars, and juke joints from coast to coast. He backed it up gig after gig, night after night, and year after year until his own "hype" got too big to go unnoticed any longer. After a decade of playing rock bars in Michigan with a variety of bands and a five year "visit" to LA during which he graduated from Musician's Institute and played with "Z Deluxe" (Warren Zevon's 1982 tour band), Moorman returned to Ohio - and to the Blues.

When Cincinnati Blues icon Big Ed Thompson suffered his debilitating stroke, Sonny was brought in to handle the guitar and vocal chores in Big Ed's band - the Cincinnati Blues All-Stars. The CBA's ETH Records release - Live at Burbank's chronicled the band during this period, and Living Blues Magazine was effusive in it's praise for Moorman's playing and singing. Not satisfied with the stylistic limitations of the All-Stars, Sonny moved on - to the Blues/Rock power trio format that is his vehicle to date.In 1994, Moorman and his band played the Memphis Cross-Cultural Music Exposition and got a recording deal with Sun Studio's 706 Records imprint. "Gary Hardy (then Sun Studio manager) came up to me before I walked off of the stage at Blues City and offered us a deal", says Sonny. Two 706 Records releases followed - L*I*V*E and Telegraph Road. At that point Moorman started what became a four-year tour with Easyriders Magazine playing their events and became a client of manager William Perkins (Allman Bros., SRV, Tinsley Ellis) . Sonny recorded his next releases on Perkins' Atlas Records label, including the 2009 Just Plain Folks Best Blues Album / Best Blues Song nominee - Crossroads Motel and Sonny's current release Live as Hell.

In addition to the critical acclaim from these releases, Sonny is the 2007 International Blues Challenge Solo/Duo 2nd place, 2008 Solo/Duo "Blues Artist on the Rise" - Blues Festival Guide Magazine, and he and his band were finalists in the 2010 International Blues Challenge. Noted music Journalist Randy McNutt may have said it best, " He can flat-out play--and sing... Sounds have been passed from blues giant Freddy King to Lonnie Mack to Sonny Moorman".

A retired landscape contractor and veteran musician from Glen Arbor has completed a two-year quest to record his first CD. Bob Jones' musical career includes playing in more than a dozen blues and rock bands. His musical history includes stints in bands that have toured the United States while based in Aspen, Colo., and Chicago — but he never previously sat down in a music studio to record his own songs, guitar strumming and vocals. That all changes for Jones with the release by Bobby Jones and Friends of Arizona Princess, also the name of the title song on the CD. “It’s a parody on the many elite ladies who drive fancy cars in Scottsdale, Ariz.,” explained Jones.

He labeled the music on the CD as mostly blues, with rock and funk undertones. Included on the 10-track Arizona Princess CD are three tunes he recorded live with his band in Colorado called Black Pearl, and six new songs that he has been working on since 2006. Six of the tracks are Jones’ compositions. Jones assembled a talented entourage of local musicians to help put down his tracks, although he provided all vocal, lead and rhythm guitar work. Helping on the CD were Tim Wire and Craig Staidmiller on piano, Roger Tarczon and John Kumjian on drums, Newt Cole on sax, John Lindeneau on trumpet, Pete Asch on tenor and baritone saxes, Steve Sandner on the Hammond B-3 organ, and Frank North on trombone.

DAVE ALLEN: I started playing drums at a young age. My first gigs were as the host drummer at Blues Jams – where I learned how to improvise, think fast, and play many styles of music. Even back then, whenever a drummer would show up, I would grab my harmonica or a guitar, and get up front for a few tunes. After that I spent many years learning the studio, doing demos and recording friends and myself, until along came the “Whitfield-Ward Band.” This band played our bar years, then private functions all over the country. I began to step out front more playing the guitar and the harmonica. I have always dearly loved the blues, and began to get more actively involved with being in a blues band of my own. During this time I owned a recording studio, where I performed on and produced many albums over the years, from all genres of music and people. Having a studio really helped me develop into being in front of the blues band. The Allen-Lamun Band is the culmination of writing and becoming the blues band I always hoped for.

LAURA LAMUN: I loved singing as a child, and I was fortunate to have a Director-Mother who gave me performance opportunities starting at the age of 5, and had me making money singing by the time I was eleven. I also had a very supportive and talented Father, with this HUGE singing voice you just had to listen to! Singing was something our whole family loved to do together, and I practiced harmonies with them singing Peter. Paul and Mary in the car, and entertaining with my sister Lisa.

A fated meeting with Dave Allen turned me in the absolute correct direction – TOWARD THE BLUES!! I co-founded our first blues band with DaveAllen in 2007 called “Little Laura & the Nude Blues Band” during which some highlights include opening for JJ Grey & Mofro twice. This band morphed over the years and would set the stage for our current inspiration as the “Allen-Lamun Band.” We have begun our journey as a powerful pairing and are becoming most well-known for our duet sound. Recording our latest CD with Dave Allen was a wonderful experience, and we are writing songs now for our next one.

Mississippi Moderne. Again, pronounce it however you like. The main thing is to listen, and in your listening you shall hear a marvelous encapsulation of things right and righteous, wistful yet wild, strange at times but always strong. Garage rock and bluster blues. Fuzz-tone and fury, and, in many ways, a full and unbroken circle back to the days when Webb Wilder was a boy possessed of the mind of a full-grown man, listening to The Kinks and The Move, an Anglophile in Mississippi.

“It’s a journey, and one thing I’ve learned about myself is that I haven’t grown up,” Webb says. “The good news is, I’m a musician. The bad news is, I’m a musician.”

The journey has taken Wilder from the Magnolia State to Music City, with some hazily important, 1970s gestation time spent in Austin. Mississippi Moderne reflects stops along the way, and suggests future flights.

Alexis Korner - Easy Rider (2 CD)

From a comparatively new label dealing with re-issues we have “Easy Rider” – an excellent double CD set of re-mastered Alexis Korner. The first CD is a selection of his early recordings with Cyril Davis and others featured include Ken Colyer, Beryl Bryden, Mike Collins, Chris Capon (where are these guys now?). There is even a track of Alexis accompanying Alan Lomax on the 1958 recorded song Frankie.

The first CD has twenty assorted tracks while the second is the complete R&B at the Marquee album of twelve songs. The sleeve notes by Michael Heatley are a good but an all too brief reminder of a small part of history and more notes would have been welcome particularly to someone who may be discovering Alexis via this CD. The music though speaks for itself.

Ladies Sing The Blues was founded in 2001 for a specific project at the Copenhagen Blues Festival. A band was born. The festival had joined six people, six well known musicians/singers on the Danish music scene that immediately connected in a great musical and personal groove. The band have been touring at festivals and clubs inside and outside Denmark ever since.

Their debut CD, "Uh Oh Yeah!", released in January 2008, shows a remarkable performance. The bands repertoire is a great mix of rollin’ honky tonk blues, groovy swamp blues and jazzy blues tunes. The 3 powerful Ladies state: "We are women singing bout what we think is important in life: love, men, food, and a good laugh."

The ladies are: Ane Kramme Abildtoft, Lea Thorlann & Lene Strøyer. They are joined by 3 great gentlemen who always keep the groove cooking: Stuart Goodstein (keyboards), André Sørensen (bass) & Gert Smedegaard (drums).
