Al "Wailin" Walker was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, and is well known for his infectious brand of rockin' rhythm and blues. His stunning electric guitar solos and commanding vocals have been thrilling large crowds for more than four decades. The first recording of Wailin Walker was with his band The Houserockers in 1978. Since then, three outstanding rock n' blues recordings of the Wailin Walker Band ("The Devil Made Me Play It", "Buzzsaw Boogie" and "Crazy at Night") have been released.

"The Devil Made Me Play It", released under Double Trouble in Amsterdam, climbed to the top of the blues charts in the Netherlands, Spain and Australia. Walker has played with and been personally mentored by many great artists such as Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Pee Wee Crayton and Otis Rush. As leader, guitarist and singer of the Wailin Walker Band, Walker has shared the stage with Johnny Winter, George Thorogood and Stevie Ray Vaughan to name a few. He continues to work with a tight rhythm section that keeps dance floors packed.

Stu Ramsay and Chicago Slim recorded this album standing up live. No overdubs, no underdubs, no massive amount of takes. They caught a feeling one afternoon and kept it going until they ran out of room. Like all root, funk, moldy and black blues, you don't harp over take after take after take. Like a conversation, you say it/do it/get it. It's never the same twice, and it's never better or worse. It's just there. A lot of teenage cats are playing and singing the blues in layers. They're O.K., but this one's real. Slim and Stu don't want to say any- thingtwice and they don't have to. There's some more music com- ing from Chicago Slim and Stu Ramsay, and this is just the start. It gets tighter as you feel better, and it's just starting to teel good.

Arthur Jackson, known as Peg Leg Sam, was an American country blues harmonizer, singer, and comedian. He recorded songs such as "Dog Chase," "John Henry," and "Early In The Morning," and worked in medical shows. He earned his nickname after an accident in 1930. Arthur Jackson was born in Jonesville, South Carolina, the fourth of six children of David Jackson, a farmer and Virginia native, and Emma Jackson. His paternal great-grandmother, Racheal Williams, was born in Virginia in 1810 and was commonly referred to as a mulatto. She may have had a white mother or father (more likely a white father, as would have been typical for the period). Peg Leg Sam taught himself to play the harmonica as a small child. He left home at age 12 and never stopped wandering. He shined shoes, worked as a houseboy, cooked on ships, and played on street corners. He lost his leg in 1930 while trying to jump a train. He retrieved a pen from a fence post, tied it to his stump with a leather strap, and kept moving. He joined the medicine show circuit in 1937, often performing with Pink Anderson. His ability to play two harmonicas simultaneously (while one went in and out of his mouth) made him a popular attraction; he could also play a harmonica with his nose. Peg Leg Sam gave his last medicine show performance in 1972 in North Carolina, but continued to appear at music festivals in his final years. In 1973, his childhood friend, Henry "Rufe" Johnson, contributed a few songs to Peg Leg Sam's album Medicine Show Man, on both guitar and vocals. He died in Jonesville in October 1977 at the age of 65.

Merryweather was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and began his career in Toronto during the early 1960s, performing under the name Bobby Neilson.

Merryweather left The Flying Circus in March 1968, and reunited with former Tripp members Ed Roth and Jimmy Livingston to form a new band. Adding ex-Fraser Loveman Group guitarist Dave Burt and drummer Gary Hall, the new group, initially dubbed 'New King Boiler'.

Merryweather's second album, Word of Mouth (released in September 1969), was a double-album recorded in Los Angeles featuring the band with Steve Miller, Barry Goldberg, Charlie Musselwhite, Dave Mason, Howard Roberts and Bobby Notkoff. The group fragmented, with Merryweather quitting after a dispute. Merryweather turned down an offer from Stephen Stills to join Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young as bass player. Word of Mouth peaked at #199 on the United States Billboard 200 album chart.

Yet another band to emerge out of the '90s swing revival scene, but these guys came out before Brian Setzer hit it big, before the movie Swingers was ever scripted and before those Gap ads taught us how to "Jump, Jive an' Wail." It's safe to say that Chicago's Mighty Blue Kings were ahead of their time before any trend bandwagon hit. And with their debut Meet Me in Uptown, these guys are playing smooth without any big-budget production or high energy.

Instead, this record has more of a laid-back, bluesy feel with production that sounds as if it was recorded in the 1940s. But it's not like this album is undanceable - it still swings hard. And with that, the Mighty Blue Kings prove that a modern-day swing band can capture the authenticity of how the music was meant to sound. /Mike DaRonco, AllMusic

Robert Finley has always wanted to do a gospel album, yet like his previous melding of blues, soul, R&B, and gospel, he’s not content to stick too closely to the pure genre. Finley works again with Dan Auerbach on his fourth album for Easy Eye Sound, and essentially gets free rein on Hallelujah! Don’t Let The Devil Fool Ya.

True to his mantra, Finley walked into the studio without any prepared material. His artistry has been honed as a street musician, playing for tips and improvising songs spontaneously. For this session, all he needed was the group of musicians assembled by Auerbach and a few words to spark him. Those musicians are Malcolm Cato (drums), Finley and Barrie Cadogan (guitar), Tommy Rennick (bass), and Ray Jacinto (keys). The words he needed were simply Auerbach saying, “Okay, Robert. Sing something.” Finley’s response was, “It’s scripture. The good Lord said, If you open your mouth, I’ll speak for you.”

Come on now, that sounds too simple. Well, almost. Although they recorded the session in just one day, Auerbach felt that the core call-and-response element of gospel music wasn’t nearly strong enough. He reached out to Finley’s daughter, Christy Johnson, her father’s touring companion, to see if she could provide the missing feeling. That proved to be the right call, with Cindy jokingly adding that it took her two days instead of her dad’s one.

The results make for a record that is hard to peg. Surely, there’s gospel, sometimes raw like Mississippi Fred McDowell and his wife, Annie Mae McDowell. At other times, it is spacey and evokes strains of Afro-futurism. Suffice it to say, this is anything but a traditional gospel record; instead, it’s haunting and penetrating grooves that echo Dr. John and Taj Mahal. It’s difficult seeing James Cleveland, for example, endorsing this brand of gospel. Just the same, that all works in Finley’s favor as it is not that far removed from his three previous critically acclaimed albums. /Jim Hynes, Glide Magazine

Australian-born, Nashville-based Kara Grainger has been gracing the international blues and roots circuit for almost two decades. Originally hailed as a guitar slinger, for her adept picking and slide skills, Grainger has developed into a triple threat with formidable singer-songwriter skills. As the album title, “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” suggests, Grainger has fulfilled a lifelong dream by recording in Memphis. Not only that, she recorded this, her fifth album, at the iconic Royal Studios under the direction of the celebrated producer, Lawrence “Boo’ Mitchell, while in the company of the Hi Rhythm Section. Grainger points to Al Green and Ann Peebles as two of her all-time favorite artists, obviously honored to be indirectly associated with them on this project, as the Hi Rhythm Section played for both of those artists as well.

Grainger delivers six originals of the nine, with Tom T. Hall’s title track, a Memphis standard co-written by Peebles, and another from NOLA’s The Meters. It’s a short listen, running only for 36 minutes. The backing band has many familiar musicians who have appeared on Memphis albums through the years. Among them are the two Hi Rhythm Section stalwarts Reverend Charles Hodges on the B3 and Leroy Hodges on bass. The Norman sisters (Shontelle and Sharisse) contribute background vocals, along with the modern-day Memphis Horns – trumpeter Marc Franklin and saxophonist Kirk Smothers. All considered, it’s a large cast of 14 in the credits.

Recording under Boo Mitchell’s direction and with the vaunted Hi Rhythm Section makes for a “can’t miss” project. Grainger admirably states her case within these hallowed walls with mostly her own material and adherence to her own style. She rarely allows herself to fall into the trap of R&B cliches, which is tempting in this setting. On their new album, Doc Bowling and his Blues Professors Sing The American Songbag (Volume 1), Doc Bowling leads his hand-picked crew across 11 songs that have come to define early 20th Century American music. Whether you view these selections as blues, folk, roots or any other handy genre, they are all iconic and important in the history of American popular music.

Inspired by the title of Carl Sandburg's 1927 book of the same name, Bowling's work as a musical archaeologist, sets the album up as a coalescence of his long-term musical vision. While many of these songs pre-date recording technology, making it impossible to hear the true original versions, Bowling and company deliver soul-stirring performances that are definitive in their own way. Expanding the traditional acoustic trio/quartet lineup to include violin, six-string banjo, sax, accordion, cajon and other assorted percussion instruments, the band imparts a modern sensibility while maintaining a reverence for tradition.

From an early age Nedra has always had a very creative imaginative spirit. Early on in grammar school Nedra was putting together talent shows, dance routines, drawing, singing and was always happiest with her Muse.

Throughout high school and beyond she was always studying and found her place in the creative arts. Picking up the brush was as natural as was picking up the harmonica. Always wild and free, ready to find more adventures that feed the artist nature and sprit to create more and push boundaries along the way. Always trying new mediums and ways to do it differently, a true original from day one.Nedra’s resume is very long and vast which has lead to her getting grants from the California Arts Council for West Point’s local youth center, BMCYF. Always giving back and loving each student, feeling like she learns as much from them as they from her.

Having a major car accident in her late 30s led to an NDE and many surgeries and complications she lives with to this day. However this fact has only led her to dig deeper and give more. The hardships of such physical pain made her need her Muse even more, adding that spiritual nature to her work that shines light like a light house for herself and many of her students and fans. During her recovery from the car accident the nursing staff asked her family what would help in her recovery, so while in an induced coma they put headphones on her with music to ease the pain: the result is she came out of it ready to write and play music leading to her first CD that led to her being listed in the top 100 harmonica players by The World of Harmonica website and becoming a representative for Hohner Harmonica Company (now KHS America).

Nowadays you will find Nedra in her studio daily creating new works and getting ready for the many public appearances on her calendar.

Malaco releases usually mix straight blues with a slicker variety of R&B aimed at "urban contemporary" radio airplay, but I'm a Gambler has a very high blues content. This tribute to Ike Turner celebrates the controversial genius who can lay claim to having invented rock 'n' roll in the 1950s and soul in the 1960s. It takes the listener through Turner's musical development with new recordings that include both "Ike" and "Ike and Tina" material from the 1951 title track to 1973, especially highlighting his peak creative output from 1969 to 1971.

Nashville's Mr. Groove Band, under the inspired leadership of Tim Smith, features two stunning female vocalists, both ex-Ikettes: Bonnie Bramlett and Audrey Turner (Turner's wife during his final years). The bonus track "Prancing" is an original, previously unreleased instrumental in vintage Turner style, with spectacular lead guitar work, terse horn interjections, rollicking boogie-woogie piano, and ever-tight backing group the Kings of Rhythm.

Ana Popovic has established herself as a musical powerhouse since picking up a guitar at age fifteen in her native home of Serbia. Her newest project, Dance To The Rhythm, is sure to follow in her list of successful recordings. Popovic was introduced to the blues at a young age by her father. She then traveled to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar and, shortly after, recorded her first solo album. She later moved to the United States, living in Memphis for a while before landing in California. The rest is, as we say, history. She has a long list of album releases, music award nominations and wins, and a formidable reputation as a first-class guitarist, vocalist, and writer.

Dance To The Rhythm is appropriately titled, as it is packed full of danceable tunes and great guitar work. Recorded on Electric Heel Records at Kona Town Recording Studio in Redondo Beach, California, the album is a ten-song offering of great music from an exceptional talent. Ana Popovic wrote, or co-wrote, every tune on this project except for a Paul Simon classic. A mix of R&B, blues, soul, rock, funk, and Latin-influenced styles and sounds, this album is sure to please even the most critical listener.

Kicking off Dance To The Rhythm is the title track, “Dance To The Rhythm.” Reminiscent of the disco era, it’s difficult to stay still while listening to this one. Popovic sings, “I’m gonna dance all the way to the finish line.” There is also a great guitar break in this song that showcases her playing proficiency. Make no mistake, Ana Popovic can play. “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover,” the Paul Simon cover, is one of my favorites on this album. Maybe I’m just dating myself a little, but for someone to interpret such a great tune is bold, and Popovic pulls it off by doing an outstanding job. There’s more of her great guitar work on this song as well.

Slowing down Dance To The Rhythm just a little is “Dwell On The Feeling.” The song appears at a point that almost establishes a resting spot for a few minutes so that you can catch your breath. “I want to dwell on the feeling of you,” sings Popovic. This is a more sensitive approach by her, but still provides a taste of what she is really known for, great guitar playing. “Sisters And Brothers” is the final cut on this recording. “Let’s love each other, through the pain. Sisters and brothers, there’s no shame.” What a great, positive statement for the times we’re living in. “Let’s love each other.” It is a fitting conclusion for the album.

Ana Popovic continues to hammer out excellent music with each album she records, and that doesn’t seem likely to change any time soon. Her guitar playing and energy may be best appreciated in a live concert setting, but her recordings are also superb and tastefully done. She continues to tour in the United States, with at least one upcoming European appearance scheduled. I always look forward to new recordings from artists, and after enjoying this album by Popovic for a while, I’ll eagerly anticipate her next project. /Moe Moore, Blues Rock Review

Nisse Hellberg attended Östra Grevie folk high school, and is, together with Jalle Lorensson, the only member of Wilmer X who has been involved since the start. Hellberg also made, together with Clas Rosenberg, the comic Herman Frid, which was published in Svenska Serier in 1981.

Hellberg released the studio album Röster från Södern together with Peps Persson in 1994, and in 1995 Hellberg recorded the album The Lonely Boys together with Per Gessle, which was first released as a soundtrack to Mats Olsson's book "The Lonely Boys", which was about a Swedish pop band in the 1960s.

Hellberg began his solo career with the album Xtrem, which was released in 2001. The album contained blues where Hellberg played all instruments, except for the drums played by Stefan "Stoffe" Sundlöf. Wilmer X took a longer break, and Hellberg's solo album Snackbar blues from 2006 was on the Swedish album chart for six months, got a gold record, and the song "Tufft jobb" ended up on Svensktoppen. The album was produced by Chips Kiesbye, who would continue the collaboration with Hellberg on several upcoming albums.

The Juke Joints, one of the major blues bands in The Netherlands, has performed their music troughout Europe and US for over 30 years now. British-born blues-rock guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Snowy White is among the more anonymous yet instantly recognizable guitar stylists to emerge from the 1970s. A sessionman as well as a solo artist, he deliberately seeks anonymity; he is equally at home playing the blues, pop, or arena rock due to his discipline, melodicism, and fluid, unhurried style on his signature vintage Les Paul gold top. In addition to a catalog of independently released solo outings or leading his White Flames or Blues Agency groups, he was a backing guitarist for Pink Floyd on the Animals and The Wall tours, lead guitarist for Roger Waters' backing band, a member of Thin Lizzy from 1980-1982, and worked with artists ranging from longtime friend Peter Green to Rick Wright, Mick Taylor, and Phil Lynott.

Tom Faia and Kate Miller are an acoustic duo that play the original songs of Tom Faia. They perform to enthusiastic audiences up and down the Central Coast of California garnering excellent audience response. The Mojo Blues Band is a blues band from Austria which was formed in 1977 by guitarist Eric Trauner and pianist Joachim Palden. Before 1977, the founders of the band played in clubs of Vienna and in 1977 Palden won a boogie woogie contest. The first prize was a record contract, so they decided to form a band which they named "Mojo Blues Band". Being the only blues band in Vienna they were often booked as backing band for blues artists who were touring in Austria, backing up artists like Johnny Shines, J.B. Hutto, Charlie Musselwhite, Louisiana Red, Sunnyland Slim, Champion Jack Dupree, Homesick James, Honeyboy Edwards, Leon Thomas, Katie Webster, Hal Singer, Jan Harrington and Eddie Clearwater.

In 1980 they teamed up with Dana Gillespie and changed their style more into rhythm 'n blues. At the early 1990s, their song Alligator Walk became a hit in the US Shag (a special dance) scene and following this they toured North and South Carolina. 1989 they visited Chicago and came back with 16 hours of material they had recorded with musicians from Chicago. The CD "The Wild Taste of Chicago" was made out of these tapes. In 1993 Christian Dozzler left the band to form his own group so Eric Trauner had to learn playing the harmonica. /Wikipedia

Ximena (Xime) Monzón is a harmonica player and singer from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She began taking her first harmonica lessons in mid 2006, with Pablo Brotzman and Adrián Jiménez, and in 2009 Gabriel Gratzer (Director of the School of Blues) invited her to participate in assemblies of School of Blues (Collegium Musicum). She has played as a guest with many local musicians on numerous recordings, and in 2011 she started working on her solo project along with Federico Verteramo on guitar, Mauro Bonamico on bass, and Rodrigo Benbassat and German Pedraza on drums.

Xime has played at clubs and festivals all across Argentina, and she has also been traveling a lot outside her country performing at blues festivals in Mexico, Uruguay, Brazil and Chile along with well known blues artists like Lurrie Bell, Vino Louden, Mike Wheeler, Flàvio Guimarães and Alamo Leal. Her influences are the great masters of blues harmonica such as Walter Horton, Sam Myers, Little Walter, Sonny Boy I and II, Billy Branch, Lazy Lester, Slim Harpo, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Carey Bell and many others.

Chicago-born Duke Tumatoe is a musician/showman who has retained a firm career by fusing gritty R&B, rock, blues, and funk injected with equal parts humor and gut-level sincerity. Tumatoe was a founding member of what would become REO Speedwagon. His tenure with that band was short-lived, leaving in 1969 and forming Duke Tumatoe & the All-Star Frogs. For the next 13 years, they toured relentlessly playing throughout the Midwest on countless college campuses and bars. Because of this grueling tour schedule, the band managed to release two albums, Red Pepper Hot! (1976) and Back to Chicago (1982). In 1983, Tumatoe decided to slow down the pace and break up the Frogs.

He immediately rebounded with the creation of the Power Trio, who recorded Duke's Up for Blind Pig Records. Tumatoe took advantage of the more flexible schedule and formed his own record label, Sweetfinger Music. Over the next several years, Tumatoe released four discs on his label, Dr. Duke (1992), Wild Animals (1994), Greatest Hits Plus (1996), and the all-instrumental Picks & Sticks (1997). Throughout his illustrious career, Tumatoe opened for several legendary figures in blues and rock, including Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, George Thorogood, Fabulous Thunderbirds, and John Fogerty. Fogerty was so taken with Tumatoe's performance, he produced the critically acclaimed 1988 live album I Like My Job! on Warner Bros.

In 1999, Tumatoe signed with the J-Bird label, which released A Ejukatid Man that same year. In 2001, Tumatoe had tongue firmly in cheek with the releases Pompous & Overrated and the raunchy seasonal disc It's Christmas (Let's Have Sex).
