After World War II the music scene in Memphis had changed. The Depression had taken much of the carefree, not to say unlawful, edge from the tumultuous licence that Beale Street denizens had enjoyed. Lots of clubs and bars had closed forever. Beale Street and Handy Park still flourished, but a town like Memphis couldn't compete with major industrial complexes like Chicago or Detroit. Major record labels no longer made regular visits to record, so most blues musicians just stopped over on their way north to record. All that changed in January 1950, when sometime deejay and recording engineer Sam Phillips opened the doors of his Memphis Recording Service. Before he worked at a number of radio stations and he arrived at WREC in Memphis in June 1945. Phillips had his own daily show for 4 years before he opened his own shop. Over the next years Phillips record first recordings by now major blues artists as Howlin' Wolf, Earl Hooker, Little Milton, James Cotton, Walter Horton, Bobby Bland, Little Jr Parker and Rosco Gordon. This 4 disc set collects over 100 post-war blues sides and it's usually the lesser known artists that provide the surprises and highlights: Woodrow Adams, Raymond Hill, Pat Hare. Phillips released some of these tracks on his Sun label (or sold to RPM, Checker & Chess), but many titles however were not released until years after, due to Phillips' reluctance to market them as hit-parade material. Anyway, Sam Phillips had a sensitive nose for talent and many who came to his studio looking to make a record were not overlooked.
