57 Tracks – 20 Never before on CD / 12 Previously unreleased performances. Remastered from Analog tapes. Texas bluesman Lightnin’ Hopkins career was both long and fruitful. He performed live for six decades and recorded for over 30 years amassing a catalogue that was larger than almost any of his contemporaries. Not only was he prolific but he was also a great raconteur and a very good live performer with an ‘act’ honed to perfection at pre-war dances and parties. His guitar playing was unconventional, some have even called it ragged, but it is not as a guitarist that he will be remembered. Somehow the way he set his songs seemed totally apposite and it gave everything he did an authenticity that few others were ever able to match.

Odd to tell that Ole Lightnin' wasn't a great guitarist! He was absolutely first rate and quite able to play solo as well as his own brand of great fingerpicking. But he was - like many of those bluesmen from this era - first and foremost a storyteller for who the guitar playing was essentially to underline what song and story he was delivering. So he had mostly two tunes, one fast and one slow, in which he was putting almost all of his songs. His first guitar influence was when he was playing with his cousin Texas Alexander. Texas asked him to play the same way how Lonnie Johnson had backed him in the 1920's and most of Hopkins' guitar licks come from those Alexander-Johnson tracks. Another big influence, although not very often highlighted was Blind Boy Fuller's records. Sam listened to a lot of Fuller's old records and many of his numbers come directly from Fuller's.
