Solo Ride is Katz’s only solo release after thirty years of composing, touring and playing. It captures the emotion and intensity of his music. It contains all instrumentals from top to bottom, drawing from his vast background of stylings from jazz to blues to classical, gospel and country.

Solo Ride puts Bruce Katz and a grand piano in a world class studio and sounds as rich and dynamic as any of the recordings he has done with full bands.

Eleven of the twelve tracks on the album are original Bruce Katz tunes and exhibit not only his virtuosic playing but also showcase his eclectic and compelling compositions. These range from barrelhouse Boogie-Woogie to classic ‘30s/ ‘40s style jazz to gospel influenced and New Orleans influenced tunes and even a “country” waltz, all with the little details and surprising “twists” that set Bruce’s writing and playing apart from the ordinary.

With a relaxed and confident manner, vocal style and mastery of his instrument he walks onto a stage and addresses the audience as though he is sitting down to play music with a group of close friends; a completely natural approach for a young man who picked up the guitar when he was just 4 years old and hasn’t put it down since.

Sunjay’s style has that natural drift between folk and blues and both camps have recognised his obvious flair. There have been a clutch of award nominations, including winning the Wath Festival Young Performers Award. He also made the final selection for the BBC’s Young Folk Award in 2012, had three nominations at the Exposure Music Awards 2014 and was also recognised by the 2014 British Blues Awards.

Drawing from a rich, musical and cultural background it is hardly surprising that Sunjay has quickly become recognised as one of the UK’s rising stars. His performances have been described as “mature & confident”, while his guitar playing has been hailed as “superb, brilliant, experienced, intricate & faultless”.

Ged Wilson is now well established on the British blues scene. He has toured the nation and has three albums under his belt. With much radio airplay and favourable reviews Ged is now starting to make his mark.

Ged Wilson describes his act as blues for the 21st Century. Raised along the Irwell Delta in Manchester and now relocated in Cheltenham, Ged is a veteran of the British Blues boom of the 60's. He cuts his original tunes from the world around him viewed through his northern biased kaleidoscope. With his upbeat guitar styles he weaves some slide, rack harp and laconic humour into his funky one man medicine show.

In the 1970’s inspired by the likes of John Mayall, Rory Gallagher and Savoy Brown Ged joined his first band called “Spike” as lead singer. The band recorded an album (vinyl LP) of self penned songs and went on to play many gigs in the Northwest of England. After a couple of years the 5 piece band went their separate ways as work and lifestyle changes took their toll.

During the 1980’s Ged experimented with the rise in synthesisers and drum machines as well as learning to play saxophone and harmonica. Ged recorded some demos at the now defunct Twilight studios in Salford. All of this was good grounding for his future musical career.

In the early 1990’s Ged formed his band, “Blues at Ten” a 4 piece blues band featuring Ged on lead vocals, guitar and harmonica. The band did many gigs across the north of England sometimes playing 7 nights a week! Here Ged started to hone his craft on stage. Once again after 4 years on the road the band took a break.

Fast forward to the early noughties and Ged was asked to front a new band called “No Money Down” a 5 piece blues band from the North West of England. The band went on to win many plaudits as they toured the country and played the major blues festivals. The band went across to Chicago to jam and observe first hand what was going down in the blues clubs there and bringing this fresh approach back to Blighty. Once again after 4 years on the road the band retired and at that point in 2011 Ged decided to go it alone.

Ged has since made many radio appearances and had his music played around the world. His albums have been appreciated by a global audience and his third studio album “Tonight at Noon” released in 2016 had a promo track “Ain’t That a Shame” featured on the Paul Jones blues show on BBC Radio 2. Ged’s previous studio album “What’s Going On?” was listed in the top 100 albums worldwide for the year 2013.

An R&B vocalist who puts her own contemporary spin on classic Southern soul, Ms. Jody has become a favorite in blues and soul circles for her often witty songs that speak the truth about life and love. Ms. Jody is the stage name of Joanne Vertie Delapaz, who was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 10, 1957. When Delapaz was two years old, her family moved to Bay Springs, Mississippi, where she still lives today. Her father was a minister, and she grew up on gospel music. Delapaz says she's been singing as far back as she can remember; growing up in the country, she would sing to the birds and animals as a child, and in 1975 she graduated to performing in her dad's church. Delapaz sang in church for over two decades, but after the death of her father and the end of her first marriage, she dropped out of music for a while.

In 2004, Delapaz attended a blues show with her brother that was headlined by Denise LaSalle; Delapaz enjoyed the show and went home inspired to give singing R&B a try. After learning the ropes of singing, Delapaz struck up a friendship with the members of a local R&B group called Total Control. The musicians put Delapaz in contact with Morris J. Williams, a songwriter and producer who often worked with the Southern soul label Ecko Records. With Williams' help, Delapaz made her first demo recordings, and then dropped by the Ecko Records offices to give them a copy. The Ecko staff quickly decided Delapaz was just the sort of artist they were looking for, and struck a deal with her.

Adopting the stage name Ms. Jody, her first album, You're My Angel, was released by Ecko in March 2006, and her second, What You Gonna Do When the Rent Is Due?, arrived the following November. Ms. Jody's sexy, streetwise style gained her a following among fans of Southern soul and blues, and she recorded prolifically, releasing ten original albums for Ecko between 2006 and 2016. Ms. Jody also enjoyed a busy schedule as a live performer, playing clubs and festival dates in the South and West, occasionally branching out for gigs in California and the Midwest. In 2017, the hardworking Ms. Jody returned with the album I Got the Feeling, while continuing to play for her fans on a regular basis.

Willie Mae ‘Big Mama’ Thornton was the first artist to record the then little known song written by two Los Angeles based teenagers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, “Hound Dog”. The song was the only chart record “Big Mama” enjoyed and of course it went on to be recorded by a young lad called Elvis Presley who took the track to No. 1 on the pop charts for 11 weeks.

Music first became important to Billylee Janey in 1964 with the British invasion, inspiring him to take up the guitar. Naturally adept at playing, he began singing and performing that same year.

Artists that had an impact on Billylee include Eric Clapton, B.B. King, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Freddie King, John Mayall, Albert King, and Robert Johnson.

His first paid performance was in 1966 at the age of 13, getting paid $40 for a 3-piece band to play at the YMCA, performing Blues, Rock/Blues, Cream, Hendrix, etc.

"Blues Power" Is a tribute to those blues influences as well as featuring BillyLee's original blues & roots compositions.

John Lee Hooker is a master of the primal, hypnotic Delta blues. Accompanied by nothing other than a bare beat of the drums (if not only the stomp of his own feet), "The Healer" can mesmerize. The simple, but effective, tools of his trade are one-chord songs and a ton of downbeat emotion. This collection of Muse Records recordings dates back to the '50s.

Hooker had a bad year in 1951. Or one would think from the opening track, "I Bought You a Brand New Home." He bought her a new home, "all dressed up inside," and a new car, too. As the sad tale is related, she pushes him out of her life and he sees another man driving that car. Supporting his indigo minimalism, the bassist and second guitar on these sessions is barely noticeable. The best track by far is James' fiery "Cripple Man," one of his most passionate and driven performances in years, on a song that has the potential to become a modern Chicago-style blues standard. Lucky's standout is the epic "Too Young to Die," which evolves into an extended guitar duel between father and son. Although he was not born in Louisiana, Eric Lindell follows Marc Broussard's career path as a young and soulful guitar-slinging upstart with his heart in the R&B of the '60s and his soul in New Orleans. This pastiche of an album released in 2006 collects and remasters the audio for music that has been previously available on tiny, poorly distributed local imprints. Despite its stitched-together origins, the disc holds together remarkably well as a cohesive statement, primarily due to Lindell's low-key yet impressive talents as singer, songwriter, and bandleader. Latin influences such as the percussion (courtesy of War's Harold Brown) and trumpet on "Sunny Daze," along with a reggae lilt on "It Won't Be Long," "Casanova," and "Two Bit Town," bring Caribbean sunshine to the sound. The opening "Give It Time" recalls Traffic in its "Dear Mr. Fantasy" chords, but the tune -- like many on his Alligator Records debut -- snakes around a soulful, gospel-styled, slow-burning vibe that is best described as rootsy. Lindell is loose and seems like he's having a ball throughout. That enthusiasm bleeds into the album's upbeat approach, especially on such frisky, party-ready tunes as "Feel Like I Do." He brings the horns and female backing vocals for an Otis Redding-inspired "All Alone," one of the many examples where Lindell's relaxed yet convincing vocals carry the song. Like much R&B, there aren't many guitar solos and only the sax takes the lead on most instrumental breaks. But the album connects with hummable songs less concerned with individual talents than with the musicians' contribution to the overall groove. As laid-back and casually inviting as a crisp spring day, Lindell kicks off his career for this blues imprint with an impressive and frothy release that shows he's just starting to reveal the full extent of his talent. ~Hal Horowitz

The world is full of acoustic guitar players. There are guitar players then we have a handful of musicians who stand apart. Terry Robb is definitely part of the latter. He may be the best acoustic player that a majority of the music listening audience has not heard. Music and entertainment publications have given Robb accolades for many years. He had collaborated with John Fahey, Maia Muldaur and Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater, to name but a few. He has had tour adventures with Buddy Guy and Steve Miller, and shared the stage with B. B. King, Robin Trower (on earlier select night’s current tour), Albert Lee, Joe Cocker and the list goes on and on. Robb also spent some time earlier in his career playing in the bands of Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and Canned Heat.

He is in the Cascade Blues Hall of Fame in his home state of Oregon (he was born in Canada). They annually award blues commendations in the customary areas. They call them the Muddy Awards. Robb was named that organizations “best acoustic guitar player” for nineteen consecutive years. The group honored him by renaming the distinction as the “Terry Robb” Acoustic Guitar Muddy Award.

His guitar prowess has him in demand as an acoustic/finger-picking workshop leader. Robb is no stranger to the studio or stage. Confessin’ My Dues is his 15th album to date and second on the Portland based NiaSounds label. Some earlier releases have been solo efforts while others have included musicians. Joining him on this album are jazz greats: Gary Hobbs on drums and Dave Captein on bass. The duo provides a great rhythm section for Robb’s guitar work. Adam Scarmstad plays rhythm guitar on “Keep Your Judgement”. Mr. Robb stated “Sonically, I wanted the album to be both intimate and powerful; I’m very excited to bring this group of musicians together for the first time”.

The cover of the work may give the impression on turn of the century (19th to 20th century that is). As soon as you hear the beginning of the opening track “Butch Holler Stomp” those thoughts change. The “toe tapper’ is a happy little tune that shows Mr. Robb’s finger-picking prowess right off the bat.

“Still on 101”, “How a Free Man Feels”, and “Darkest Road” all have that delta blues sound. “Darkest Road” grabbed me with its references to Mississippi, Highway 61, and the Crossroads. The lyrics do a good job of expressing the thoughts and you can almost feel a person coming up behind you during the night and offering what you want in exchange for something the stranger wants to control.

“It Might Get Sweaty” is a funky offering with pace changes scattered throughout the song. About halfway through the tune Mr. Robb sets off on a flying-finger riff that to a bumbling guitarist like me seems impossible for a man to accomplish.

The title track, “Confessin’ My Dues”, gives you an idea of almost everything a man will face in a lifetime. “Now Vestapal” is based on the way a parlor guitar was tuned in the early 1900’s. The finger picking style was best played in “Open D” tuning, which means a D chord is strummed with no strings fretted. That became Vestapal. The song here has a catchy tune with good tempo. It changes to slower finger-picking mode toward the middle of the song then builds back up to finish the song.

I will admit prior to listening to Confessin’ My Dues I knew little about Terry Robb. I have become an admirer of his guitar playing the way he can convey a feel with his fingers. The album has a little from every incarnation of the blues. The finger-picking is jaw dropping, the delta feel seems real and the musicianship is suburb. ~Bob Swofford

"If you don't dig the blues you got a hole in your soul" sayeth King. Born in Indianola, MS, on April 25 1923. as Albert Nelson. He taught himself how to play guitar when he was a child, building his own instrument out of a cigar box. King moved to Gary, IN, in 1953, where he joined a band that also featured Jimmy Reed but King actually played drums in the group. At this time, he adopted the name Albert King and claimed to be related to B.B. King. Eventually King met Willie Dixon who helped him record for Parrot Records. Five songs were recorded during the session and only one single, "Be On Your Merry Way" / "Bad Luck Blues," was released. In 1956, Albert moved to St. Louis, where he initially sat in with local bands. By 1958, Albert was quite popular in St. Louis, which led to a contract with the fledgling Bobbin Records in the summer of 1959. King's records for Bobbin sold well in the St. Louis area, enough so that King Records leased the "Don't Throw Your Love On Me So Strong" single from the smaller label. When the single was released nationally late in 1961, it became a hit, reaching number 14 on the R&B charts. King Records continued to lease more material from Bobbin -- including a full album, "Big Blues", which was released in 1963 -- but nothing else approached the initial success of "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong." Bobbin also leased material to Chess, which appeared in the late '60s.

Albert King left Bobbin in late 1962 and recorded one session for King Records in the spring of 1963 without a hit. Within a year, he cut four songs for the local St. Louis independent label Coun-Tree. But by 1966 King signed with Stax Records where he finally broke out. With Booker T & The MGs on sessions the soul underpinning gave King crossover appeal, as evidenced by his R&B chart hits -- "Laundromat Blues" (1966) and "Cross Cut Saw" (1967) both went Top 40, while "Born Under a Bad Sign" (1967) charted in the Top 50. Furthermore, King's style was "borrowed" by several rock & roll players, most notably Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, who copied Albert's "Personal Manager" guitar solo on the Cream song, "Strange Brew." Albert King's first album for Stax, 1967's "Born Under A Bad Sign", was a collection of his singles for the label and became one of the most popular and influential blues albums of the late '60s. His star continued to rise with the terrific live record "Live Wire/Blues Power", which remains today one of King's defining moments. "Years Gone By" dropped the following year sounding like every bit the sequel to "Born Under A Bad Sign" it should've been. Yet this was followed by an erratic couple years that included an odd tribute to Elvis Presley ("King Does The King's Things"), a tedious mostly-instrumental collaboration with Pops Staples and Steve Cropper ("Jammed Together") and a stiff LP produced by Don Nix ("Lovejoy"). King rebounded with the masterpiece "I'll Play The Blues For You" featuring members of Booker T & The MGs and the followup "I Wanna Get Funky". R & B chart hits like "I'll Play The Blues For You", "Breaking Up Somebody's Home", "Answer To The Laundromat Blues" & "That's What The Blues Is All About" come from these two records.

King left Stax in 1974 for Tomato Records for the somewhat successful "Truckload Of Lovin", which produced an R & B hit with Sir Mack Rice's "Cadillac Assembly Line". The quality of King's material began declining rapidly during this discofied period and subsequent albums including the Allen Toussaint produced "New Orleans Heat" in 1977 are considered his weakest. Following the 1977 release of "The Pinch", a collection of unreleased material from the Stax vault, King "retired" from the studio for several years, concentrating on his legendary live performances. But the titan was back in the studio in 1983 on the Stax-related label Fantasy for a pair of solid LPs in his classic Soul/Blues style ("San Francisco '83" & "I'm In A Phone Booth Baby") but he seemed to retire from recording again, occasionally guesting on albums like Gary Moore's "Still Called The Blues" before finally getting back in the studio and recording the obscure European effort "Red House" in 1992. King died in that same year. Countless live albums and compilations have naturally appeared since then, further proving he was one of the greatest of the modern electric Blues artists.

VooDoo Hawks is a mix of Americana, Blues, Cajun & Rock. The VooDoo Hawks, since their inception in 1998, has hosted over 300 shows a year and has become a venue for motorcycle rallies and music festivals, featuring Blackberry Smoke, Tab Benoit, 38 Special, Leon Russell, Jeff Healey, Dick Dale, Johnny Winter, Marshall Tucker, Savoy Brown and so on. Whenever asked to describe their music brand, they simply call it "Roadhouse Music".
Singer-songwriter Rikki Dee Hall began his artistic journey under the influence of the Gospel, Country, Blues and Rock and Roll in his hometown of Walhall, South Carolina. He began to play the piano in his tenth year of life, then he received his first guitar. The Allman Brothers, Big Funk Railroad, Brown Savoy, Humble Pie and ZZ Top and many others are his idols. After moving to Colorado after serving in the U.S. Army, he met guitarist Steve Petrokhoy in 1994. In the lyrics, Hall quotes Lonnie Mack, John Lennon, Cuba Kodu, John Fogerty, Bob Seger and Steve Marriott - their favorite songwriters.
Guitarist Steve Petrohoy started playing in 1969, influenced by Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dickey Betts, Gary Moore, Vince Gill and Brad Paisley. Born in Bethlehem, PA, he brings his sound to the sound of VooDoo Hawks. He is called one of the most hardworking musicians in the business because of his workaholic thinking regarding his music.
The band’s newest member, guitarist Joe Callahan, is from Kansas City, Kansas. His contribution to recording the latest release of the band "Blood Red Moon" took the band to new heights that had never been before. Influenced by Joe Walsh, Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton, his guitar playing skills are growing higher and higher.
On keyboards, Colorado Native, Matt "Shadowcat" Martinez is a wild man who is just as interesting to watch as to listen. Thanks to influences such as Don Airy, John Lord, Ray Deacon and Ray Manzarek, Matt brings rock and roll Hammond B3 to the group. NO SYNTHESIS in the group are NOT ALLOWED!
Bass player Chris Demott, originally from San Diego, brings a melodic approach, but at the same time a harsh sound, to the sound of the band's blues rock.

Formed in late 2017, Funky Jandal and the Murray Brothers (AKA The Funky Jandals) first met a blues festival in Fiji and are now well known on the NZ blues scene. The band members’ experience is wide and rich with Henry ‘The Funky Jandal’ Beattie (Furious 3, Legacy, and Juice On The Loose) holding down the groove of the band on drums and vocals. He is joined by brothers Warwick and Stafford Murray on virtuoso vocals, bass, guitars, ukulele and blues harp.

Henry has been gigging for over 25 years and is known both domestically and internationally for his incredibly funky drumming and distinctive soulful voice.

Warwick has played in most continents of the world and has brought out several solo albums. He has enjoyed NZ album chart success with The Strait Shooters (‘That’s All We Have Time For’ March 2017 No. 20) and The Fabulous Murray Brothers (‘Sing it Chap’ January 2018 No.6).

Stafford has played for bands in Britain and Europe over the past 30 years, including with with members of Simply Red, Queen and Shakin’ Stevens among many others. After moving to NZ in 2017, Stafford and Warwick created The Fabulous Murray Brothers (along with Aaron Nonoa and Mark Thomas) and since then the brothers have enjoyed successful NZ album chart and festival appearances and have been played extensively on radio.

The ‘Funky Jandals’ will play a soulful mix of funk, soul and blues. With 3-part vocal harmonies and an array of musical instruments on show they will offer an eclectic mix of their own electrifying songs and tasty covers, as showcased on their 2019 EP ‘See You At The End Boys!’ which will be available at the Bay of Islands Jazz n Blues festival.

Bernard Thomas (August 22, 1948 – June 16, 2019), better known as Bishop Bullwinkle, was an American pastor and singer best known for appearing in the viral YouTube video "Hell 2 Da Naw Naw". Bishop Bullwinkle's real name was Bernard Thomas. The Bullwinkle part of his name came from a childhood nickname; while in school, a classmate of his wrote on the bulletin board, "Bernard Thomas is funny like Bullwinkle the moose". He was based in Florida. Thomas died on June 16, 2019 from complications of a heart attack.

'20 Strings and the Truth' is the most recent collection of tracks from multi instrumentalist Harry Manx. Like many of Harry's recordings, the music has its roots in both Delta Blues and Indian Classical music. This recording will stand out from Harry's previous recordings simply because it is mostly instrumental. Harry has chosen two well known vocal songs (one from George Gerswin and the other from Bob Marley) to compliment the seven instrumentals.

Harry is joined on the CD by Clayton Doley on keyboards, Kelby McNayr on drums and Niel Golden on talblas. Harry plays a wide variety of instruments including drums, all guitars (slide or otherwise) and the Mohan Veena. These tracks are all journeys unto themselves, kick back, shift into now, enjoy.
