Rich DelGrosso is the leading proponent and expert on mandolin blues. He was nominated for a 2006 Blues Music Award in the Best Instrumentalist category by the Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN.Blues Mandolin? In 1903, W.C. Handy, the “Father of the Blues,” discovered the blues in a performance by a trio in Cleveland, Mississippi; guitar, fiddle and mandolin. The mandolin has been in the blues since it began and DelGrosso is bringing it back to the bandstand. According to Mark Hoffman, co- author of "Moanin' at Midnight, the Life and Times of Howlin' Wolf," Rich DelGrosso is "the greatest living blues mandoman, the best since Yank." He has performed at clubs and festivals for the past thirty years, mentored by and performing with blues and string-band legends James "Yank" Rachell and Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong.

A respected writer in the blues realm, his work has appeared in Living Blues, Mandolin World News, Frets, Mandolin Magazine and Footsteps. He has been a writer for Blues Revue magazine since 1991, and an associate editor since 1996. Guitar players around the world have been loyal fans of his monthly column, "Take It On Home," a staple for guitarists since the mag began!

A renowned teacher, he has been featured on staff of the Mandolin Symposium and has been in demand for camps and workshops from New York to California.He received the "Keeping the Blues Alive" award (KBA) in 1989 from the Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN. for his work coordinating the Augusta Heritage Arts: Bluesweek in Elkins, WV.

DelGrosso has taken his brand of "kick-ass" blues to venues nationwide. . . west to the Blue Cafe in Long Beach, rockin' Rosa’s in Chicago, back home at the The Soup Kitchen Saloon in the Motor City, and stompin' at Passim’s in Boston. March of 2008 he toured Australia with Fiona Boyes and Mookie Brill in support of their latest release, “Live From Bluesville,” a Vizztone release.

As his fans will tell you, this is not the same old blues. DelGrosso has a sound all his own. As Przemek Draheim of "The Voice of the Blues," Radio Bravo, Torun, Poland wrote "The sound of your axe is one of the coolest things I've heard in blues!" It is old-school, rooted in history but forging new ground. He can stand with any guitar slinger and he often does!

Soul, early blues, and old-school country-influenced musician Quinn DeVeaux recently released the energetic foot-stomping ‘Book of Soul’. The Nashville-based artist demonstrates his musical versatility and vitality once again with this new record; an uplifting affair that brings to mind the sound of recordings from Memphis’ famed Sun Studios in another era. Entirely written and produced by Quinn himself, ‘Book of Soul’ was recorded in Nashville, TN at The Bomb Shelter, projecting a warm aura that is both rapturous and healing with a focus on modern storytelling.

Songs like the resplendent “Been Too Long” and sumptuous “All I Need” fit right alongside contemporaries Nathaniel Rateliff, Anderson Paak and Leon Bridges where the sweetly subdued “Come On Home” and rhythmic “Trouble” are reminiscent of the best Al Green classic Stax soul grooves. In between, other influences pop up like the Bill Withers-flavored “Gimme Your Love” or the early New Orleans R&B feel of “Take Me Home” and “Walk and Talk.” All influences are taken to new heights in Quinn’s hands. “I love this record and feel that I am at the beginning of a new era in my creative life,” says Quinn. “I want as many people to hear this record as possible and looking back I’m not sure I ever felt that way. This record has more of my soul in it than anything I’ve done.”

Quinn DeVeaux is an old head on young shoulders. His signature “blue beat soul” sound is one half retro, one half future, paying homage to blues, R&B and soul that came before, but looking forward by putting his own modern mark on it with self-penned songs and unique guitar stylings. He spent his early years in Gary, Indiana (birthplace of The Jackson 5) living with his grandmother, a former jazz singer. Though Quinn’s early years were rooted in church choir, blues, old-school country and soul were in his blood. While still a teenager, Quinn headed west to San Francisco with just a guitar and his golden voice, settling in the Mission District, where he became a founding member of the local group Blue Roots.

Quinn went on to form Quinn DeVeaux & The Blue Beat Review and released a string of well-regarded albums that garnered accolades from the Bay Area music press. His raucous rollicking live shows packed venues and dance floors with irresistible beats and his smooth soulful voice. Quinn is a commanding frontman whose electrifying live performances gives audiences a boisterous good time. SF Weekly raved, “He calls his music ‘blue beat.’ But what comes out when Quinn DeVeaux hits the mic might as well be called pure joy…the warm grit of his guitar work, DeVeaux has a joyous sound all his own.”

In the span of eight years the Rockin' Highliners produced and released four recordings, three of which were signed to the major record labels such as Square Dog Records and Stony Plain Records/Warner Records Canada. The Rockin' Highliners were fortunate enough to have producers such as Merik and Duke Robillard on board for the albums "What Were You Thinking" and "Oh My". The band toured throughout Canada, USA and Europe doing 200 + shows a year.

The Highliners were nominated and presented with numerous awards including the Juno's, PMA's, COCA, ARIA's, WCMA's, Real Blues Magazine and Maple Blues Awards. They recorded two videos produced by Joel Stewart which were featured on Much Music Canada, Country Music Television as well as many national television stations. The Mark Hodgson Band came into national prominence primarily in the years 1995-2000 with its residency as the house band at Boot Hill Saloon, while performing on a regular basis at The Bank & Blues Club. These two albums are the first ones Jimmy recorded for the Bluesway label near the end of his career and shouldn't be dismissed. This album and the superior "Big Boss Man/Down In Virginia" two-fer are the best produced Jimmy albums. All of Jimmy's trademarks are here and the band with Eddie Taylor, Phil Upchurch and Lefty Bates work their usual magic. As always, Jimmy rerecorded earlier material for each new album but don't think these are inferior to the "originals". This is all good stuff; so, if you have a sizeable helping of his Vee-Jay material and are still hankering for more of what made Jimmy great, get the Boss Man/Virginia album and if you like that, then get this one and relive that mis-spent youth trying to work out how he made such seemingly simple music so complex. ~Anthony S. The Detroit Diva brings her A-game on Black Crow Moan. She also brings a small army of seasoned and extremely talented musicians to join in. Her special guests on this record are Blues Hall of Famer Joe Louis Walker, and rock guitar virtuoso Derek St. Holmes (Ted Nugent) who also wrote songs for Koko Taylor and Ivan Neville, to name a few. Other artist contributions include Howard Glazer on guitar, Mike Puwal (Kenny Wayne Shepherd, ICP) on guitar and bass, Lenny Bradford (Bo Diddley) on bass, tambourine and backing vocals, Jason Kott (Robert Randolph), John Abraham and Chuck Bartels (Sturgill Simpson) on bass. Bruce Bears (Duke Robillard), and Jim Alfredson (Janiva Magness) add some extra lift on Hammond B3. John Medeiros Jr., Skeeto Valdez (King Konga), Demarcus Sumpter, Jeffrey “Shakey” Fowlkes (Too Slim and the Taildraggers), and Brian Clune keep the clock on drums. Motor City songstress Kymberli Wright (Straight Ahead), and Eliza’s sister Valerie Taylor add soaring backing vocals.

Let’s get to the music. It all kicks off with “Don’t Judge the Blues.” This foot-stomping, hand-clapping attention-getter is Saturday night fish fry meets Sunday morning tent revival. Neals’ gritty, powerful vocals come out strong, accompanied by ass-kicking resonator slide guitar. At one point she sings through a green bullet mic, adding that vintage touch. “Why You Ooglin’ Me?” switches the tempo to a mighty Chicago style slow grind. We catch on quickly that Eliza’s songwriting skills have matured as much as her delivery. All the songs on Black Crow Moan were written (or co-written) by Neals save one, and we’ll discuss that later.

“The Devil Don’t Love You,” co-written by and featuring Joe Louis Walker, is a swanky, funky cautionary tale. It’s an old blues story told in modern, jazzy form, with Walker’s gritty vocals and killer guitar adding that new blues touch. The first moaning we hear on Black Crow Moan comes on “I Can Fly.” A blues-rock ballad of epic proportions, Glazer’s guitar takes second fiddle only to Neals’ lofty voice with Wright and Taylor kicking it up 12 notches. “River is Rising,” comes in with Glazer’s spot-on guitar adding to the haunting lyrics and Eliza’s riveting vocal delivery.

The title track is a soulful, self-examining, call-and-response once again with JLW. The lyrics give us the feeling that Neals had insight to the current state of the world. The isolation, and loneliness and desperation it causes are laid bare. “The solo feeling everyone has right now is like solitary confinement,” she told me. “I think we will connect. We’re all naked in some way.”

It’s not all about the ballads though. On “Run Sugar Run,” Neals piano starts off a song that is pure American rock and roll. It’s Bruce Springsteen meets Billy Joel jamming in a Detroit bar with Puwal sitting in on guitar. The dark story line gives way to good advice from one woman to another. You’ll get it when you hear it.

Derek St. Holmes makes his first appearance on “Never Stray.” A promising love ballad, St. Holmes adds nice, crunchy lead runs. Neals puts a short leash on her usually powerhouse vocal delivery, showing us a softer side. St. Holmes also adds awesome guitar to the only cover song on the album, the Big Mama Thornton classic, “Ball and Chain.” Neals delivers this her own way. Slower and more deliberate than Thornton’s original, but without the primal screams of Janis Joplin’s famous cover. That’s not to say Neals doesn’t deliver. She does, in spades, tearing our hearts out along the way. Singing like a woman possessed, she throws so much of herself into this blues standard that one may think she wrote it herself. I’m not crying. You’re crying. Bravissimo!

The final track is a guilty pleasure for me. My friend, and former producer/bandmate Shawn Ames wrote a song several years ago called “There’s a Party in My Pants,” that was a crowd favorite at live shows. Neals does something very similar here with “Hey, Take Your Pants Off.” This is a fun shuffle for fun’s sake and is sure to pack any dance floor. It’s the perfect palate cleanser and leaves us the way it should – wanting more.

Black Crow Moan is Eliza Neals’ crowning achievement to date. She took some advice from fellow blues artists, brought in some top flight hired guns, created an album of almost entirely original music, and is making it available at a time we need it most. “This album is going to be more sentimental – a lot of stuff coming from way, way back,” Neals said in a recent interview with Gary Schwind. “I think it’s more heartfelt. More like a confessional. That’s different.”

Little Richard quit rock & roll in 1957, just two years after "Tutti Frutti" turned him into a blazing star. He'd return to rock & roll a few years later but his speedy retreat to the church established an arc that would replay itself throughout his career: incendiary hedonism followed by repentance. This swift reversal certainly affected Richard's career in the short-term -- Art Rupe had no choice but to issue outtakes, sometimes polishing them for mass consumption, as when he turned "Keep A-Knockin'" into a raging thunderstorm -- but also the long, as it interrupted his seemingly unstoppable momentum and wound up muddying history, obscuring how his run at Specialty was a meteoric 18 months, a brief burst of brilliance that maybe was destined to flame out. Almost all of Richard's legacy, not to mention the lion's share of his compilations, is based on these 18 months but Specialty/Concord's 2015 triple-disc box Directly from My Heart: The Best of the Specialty & Vee-Jay Years adds the sessions he recorded with Rupe after returning to Specialty in 1962, along with his 1964 and 1965 sides for Vee-Jay Records. This, along with some of the slower numbers from Richard's two Specialty '50s LPs, adds depth and dimension; it also turns this box into essentially The Complete Specialty and Vee-Jay Masters of Little Richard, since the only missing track out of all the singles and albums is an early '60s version of "Hound Dog," which is hardly a great loss. Remarkably, this is the first extensive box covering both Specialty and Vee-Jay to ever be released. Prior Specialty boxes dug deep into alternate takes, all good, but sometimes that played like an overdose of cayenne in chili: the strong spice overwhelmed any subtlety of the flavors. Here, it's possible to hear traces of Richard's softer early blues and gospel roots, then there are the '60s sides, where Richard relaxes and gets deeply soulful while also wildly reinventing '50s standards like "Blueberry Hill" and "Only You," turning Hank Williams' "Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used to Do)" into proto-funk. No other Little Richard set found room for these detours and they do him a considerable favor, showing the range that extended far beyond his trademark wallop and woo, and while his legacy still rests on that astonishing fireball at Specialty -- a time that started with "Tutti Frutti," contained "Slippin' and Slidin'," "Long Tall Sally," "Ready Teddy," "Rip It Up," "Lucille," "Good Golly Miss Molly," and "The Girl Can't Help It," and ended with "Keep A-Knockin'" -- it's instructive to listen beyond the hits because it shows just how good Little Richard really was. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Postcard From Beale Street represents the diverse influences that make Memphis music more than a thing of the past. Like Memphis, Eric’s music can’t be “pigeon-holed”; he’s not merely a blues artist. This is a songwriting album: ear candy from some fine musicians. Each of these songs tell a story through lyrical imagery and crafty songwriting. All of these songs are ABOUT something, not just words to accompany music.

The album begins with “Ain’t Whipped Yet”, which is Eric’s life story and motto – and gives a hint about how his nickname “Scrappie” came about. Eric’s lament, “Oh, Booze!” captures the essence of the Beale Street of the past – and present, with horns and arrangements that would have brought a smile to W.C. Handy himself and lyrics that tell a timeless story.

With “He’s Just An Alley Cat” Eric shows that he and his band can rock out and get funky at the same time. The song “Follow Your Stupid Little Dreams” urges people (especially fellow musicians) to do just what the title says- again in a musical style harking to the Beale Street of 100 years ago.

“Homesick Angel” is Eric’s homage to his fighter-pilot grandfather, and “Fair Weather Friends” tells a timeless story in a very Memphis style. Anyone whose grandparents lived in a rural area can relate to “Blackberry Patch”, and those who long to see a loved one will identify with “Come See About Me”. Waiting For That Day” is the universal song of every working stiff and “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” tells of one way to cope with the frustrations of life.

Postcard From Beale Street is a homegrown production from start to finish, every song was written, played, and recorded in Memphis by Memphis musicians – produced, mixed, mastered and manufactured in Memphis.

A veteran guitarist who fused the blues with gospel, R&B, and country traditions, Elvin Bishop became one of the first stars of blues-rock as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and later went on to a solo career that peaked with the 1976 single "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," which became a Top Ten smash. Bishop's guitar work could be flashy, but it was also strongly rooted in blues and country traditions, and he was fluid and playful in a way that many guitar heroes of the '70s were not. Bishop's guitar work took a central role on the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's 1967 The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw, and after he went solo, he hit his stride on 1974's Let It Flow and 1976's Struttin' My Stuff. After a layoff from recording, Bishop was back in fine fettle on 1988's Big Fun and 1991's Don't Let the Bossman Get You Down!, and he continued to record solid work into the 2010s on Red Dog Speaks (2010) and Something Smells Funky 'Round Here (2018).

Elvin Bishop was born in Glendale, California, on October 21, 1942. He grew up on a farm in Iowa with no electricity or running water, and eventually moved to Oklahoma with his family when he was ten. Raised in an all-white community, his only exposure to African-American traditions was the radio, which introduced him to the blues stations in Shreveport, Louisiana. The piercing sound of Jimmy Reed's harmonica won his attention; Bishop would later liken it to a crossword puzzle that he had to figure out.

Bishop won a National Merit Scholarship to the University of Chicago in 1959, giving him a chance to immerse himself in the thriving Windy City blues scene. After two years of college, Bishop dropped out and pursued music full time, eventually meeting Howlin' Wolf's guitarist Smokey Smothers and learning the basics of blues guitar from him. In the early '60s, Bishop teamed up with blues harp master Paul Butterfield and they formed the core of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, a group that helped bridge the gap between rock and blues. Although Bishop had only played guitar for a few years, he practiced frequently, and performed with Butterfield in just about every place possible, including campuses, houses, parks, and Big John's on Chicago's North Side, a venue that hosted the Butterfield Blues Band frequently and helped them spread their reputation. Bishop helped shape the sound of several Butterfield albums, especially 1967's The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw, whose title refers to Bishop's nickname and countrified persona.

In 1968, Bishop left Butterfield's band following the release of their fourth album, 1968's In My Own Dream. He launched a solo career and relocated to the San Francisco area, where he made frequent appearances at the Filmore with artists like Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, and the Allman Brothers Band. Bishop recorded four albums for Epic Records, beginning with 1969's The Elvin Bishop Group, and later signed with Capricorn in 1974. His recording of "Traveling Shoes" (from the 1974 album Let It Flow) made a dent on the charts, but the single "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" (from Struttin' My Stuff) made a bigger splash in 1976 when it peaked at number three on the Billboard charts. Despite the success of "Fooled Around," Bishop's next few albums -- including 1976's Hometown Boy Makes Good! and 1978's Hog Heaven -- were only modestly successful, and the Elvin Bishop Group quietly dissolved. Capricorn brought out The Best of Elvin Bishop in 1979 (a collection of his Epic material, The Best of Elvin Bishop: Crabshaw Rising, came out in 1975), and after 1981's Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby was issued by the German Line label in 1981, he laid low for several years, eventually resurfacing when he signed with the blues-oriented independent label Alligator Records.

Bishop's first album for Alligator, Big Fun, appeared in 1988, and Don't Let the Bossman Get You Down! followed in 1991; both earned better reviews than his final albums of the '70s. He also participated in Alligator's 1992 20th anniversary cross-country tour; three years later, he toured with veteran bluesman B.B. King and released the album Ace in the Hole. The Skin I'm In followed in 1998, and 2000's That's My Partner saw him teaming up with Smokey Smothers, the musician who taught him guitar many years earlier.

After a five-year hiatus, Bishop released Gettin' My Groove Back in 2005 on Blind Pig Records; he then jumped to the Delta Groove Music label for 2008's The Blues Rolls On, which featured guest spots by B.B. King, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, and others. Red Dog Speaks (the title refers to his beloved red 1959 ES-345 Gibson guitar), arrived in 2010, with the joyous and gritty Can't Even Do Wrong Right appearing in 2014. The following year, Bishop teamed with Bob Welsh on piano and guitar and Willy Jordan on hand percussion and vocals to form the Big Fun Trio. They made their recording debut on Alligator's 2018 release Something Smells Funky 'Round Here. Live at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 2019 captured a set Bishop and his band played at the Crescent City's celebrated annual music festival.

Though it's also our way of getting back to you with a new Dr Boogie Presents' compilation album. This time, I opted for Rhythm'n'Blues, Soul, and a few asides in this black music that was so often dominated by fantastic singers through most of the '60s. Rhythm 'n' Blues defines a music style born out of the Blues and Gospel. Played by black musicians in the early '40, Rhythm 'n' Blues was first called 'Race Music'.

In 1949, as the US magazine Billboard published an article by Jerry Wexler, the 'Race Music' hit list became the Rhythm and Blues hit list. The expression aligns the word 'Rhythm' for a fast tempo and the word 'Blues' for the 12-Bar rule. This genre was black bands' thing. At a certain point young blacks and whites were increasingly listening to the same music, but they didn't know it yet.

Rhythm'n'Blues would become the vector that would let black music infiltrate white popular music and pave the way for the emergence of Rock'n'Roll. The arrival of Detroit, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, L.A. and Memphis record labels on the Rhythm'n'Blues scene made it possible for numerous regional styles to develop. Mid-sixties, Rhythm'n'Blues would morph into Soul, which would bow down to Funk circa 1974. There ´s a lot of slideguitar and lapsteel on the new album – uncompromising, atmospheric and as incisive as a surgeon ´s knife. The music is a mixture of genres from all over the world with a heavy dose of Blues: „American Music – Euro Style“. Recorded live at the Watt Matters Stu- dio in Germany with only a homeopathic dose of overdubs and effects. This has been a very busy year so far for Mark Hodgson, the hard harpin’ swamp blues sensation and King Snake Records recording artist. Coming fresh off the grand opening of the Orlando, Florida House of Blues club where Mark and his Extreme Blues Band were the headlining act, his current release on King Snake Records, Extreme Blues, is quickly gathering very favorable reviews as a sure bet for the "Best Independent Release" of 1997.

Starting back with 1981’s Survival In A Tourist Town and right up to the present with a steady live performance schedule and appearances on three King Snake compilations released this year, all the years of club dates and hard work are putting Mark Hodgson in the national blues scene spotlight. Extreme Blues is the latest in an impressive collection of material full of mojo soul blues power, crisp and original stylings, and plenty of swamp king attitude.

Many first-rate musicians have lined up to sing the deep blue praises of Mark Hodgson after working with him on various projects and sharing stages primarily throughout the South. Even Junior Wells, the legendary Chicago harmonica king, once said to Mark, "You was born to blow that harp!" The Rockin' Highliners start off their CD with two barnburners. First, "Swing Party," a tune for the new swing dance craze that is as good as anything by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy or Mighty Blue Kings. Interestingly, this is a two-guitar rock combo without the benefit of a horn section. They follow this up with an ominous cover of the Paladins' in the true '60s psychedelic blues spirit. Things turn in the direction of a more pure blues with "That's My Life." This upbeat, jump blues number is followed by the more reflective ballad "Speak." It is easy to see how the group netted their county's Juno nomination for Best Blues Album, but there is certainly much more to the group.

This is a rock band close to the tradition of jump blues that also led to the musical philosophy of Aerosmith. Such a danceable, electric blues, proto-rock sound can be heard in "Old Man" on this recording. In this, the Rockin' Highliners are disciples of T-Bone Walker and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. Take a listen to their blistering, fiery "Easy on the Eyes" featuring an additional keyboardist and second vocalist. Just when you think you even have them pinned down on their stylistic intentions, the group throws a greased curve ball like the reverberated surf ditty "Spank."

But it all works together on this album, because the "jump" in jump blues is the same "swing" in swing music and both are just effectually mixed separately when the need is for feel-good, body motivating cuts. On this album, the dance party winds down for ride-home music in the form of a blues ballad ("If I Could Be That") and the moderate jump blues finger-snapper "What's The Matter With Your Head." After this, a final rousing number boasts the promise of the next night out in the accelerated "Be Good or Be Gone" originally by Chuck Willis. /Tom Schulte, AllMusic

Like a fine wine, The Little Red Rooster Blues Band just seems to get better with age. Founded back in 1988 the band has successfully developed their own sound through interpretations of traditional Chicago Blues and West Coast Jump Blues. Over the years the band has consistently performed their high energy brand of blues in many renowned clubs and festivals. Their performance mission is simple: To entertain and leave them hungry for more. The band has traveled extensively performing in many major cities including the home of the blues, Chicago, Ill. The band has also traveled to the United Kingdom, performing at clubs and headlining the Internationally Acclaimed Harbury Blues Festival in July of 1999 and also again in 2000, 2001, and 2015.

The Little Red Rooster band has found tremendous success in their recording efforts. Their first release, "Philadelphia to Memphis", received national recognition within the blues community. Their second release, "Livin’ Large", was released in July 1997 and received tremendous reviews from fans and followers alike, and the band’s follow up "Broke Again" also went on to receive tremendous praise from fans. That recording sparked a featured article in American Harmonica News magazine. The band’s follow-up CD, "The Kids Love Us", marked the 15-year anniversary of the group.

In 2013, the band went back into the studio after many years and brought old bandmates make together again for a marathon recoding session for "Sip It, Don’t Kick It". In 2015 and 2018, the band released two more CD’s containing all original material: "Hijinx and Tomfoolery" and "Lock Up The Liquor". Both albums have been featured on radio stations worldwide. "Lock Up The Liquor" made the Living Blues Radio Chart’s Top 25 in July of 2018.
