Mississippi MacDonald might be a new name to you but after a listen to ‘Do Right, Say Right’ you’ll be glad you made his acquaintance and probably hurry to check out his previous six! (‘Devil’s Chain’ (2014, with The Cottonmouth Kings); ‘American Accent’ (2015, with The Cottonmouth Kings); ‘Dress For The Money’ (2016, with The Cottonmouth Kings); ‘With The Soul Fixers’ (2017, with Steve Bailey and The Soul Fixers); ‘Shake ‘Em On Down’ (2018, with Steve Bailey); and ‘This Is How It Is’ (2020).
Despite the ‘Blues name’ McDonald hails from London rather than Mississippi and penned all bar one of the tracks here. He is joined by Phil Dearing (The Gillies, The Noun) on keyboards & guitar, Elliot Boughen (Soul Fixers) on bass, Mark Johnson-Brown on drums, and Lucy Dearing (Cottonmouth Kings) on backing vocals.
As MacDonald says in the press release: “Blues is often misunderstood. It’s not sad music – there’s great humour, great joy and there’s celebration. When the chips are down and it looks like you can’t go on, there’s always something – there’s always a little light shining through. There’s no heartbreak or bad luck that a horn section, a Hammond Organ and a few Albert King licks can’t cure. And that’s what this record is all about.” On a record with plenty to love there’s a few that really stand out for me. First the wonderful almost Gospel, down at heel ‘Drinker’s Blues’; the laid back and loose ‘Let Me Explore Your Mind’; and the wonderful single “I Was wrong’ which just shows why MM is picking up all these accolades. When you add to that the wry humour of tracks like ‘That’s It I Quit’ and the searing Hammond on ‘I Heard It Twice’ then you’ll be hooked! Great stuff! ~Mark Diggins
