Mississippi John Hurt was arguably the most important blues "rediscovery" during the late '60s, and his music remains among the most humane and life-affirming in any genre of American music. These 14 songs were recorded in 1963 and 1964. The mood is late-night informal recording session, although there's little, if anything, in the Hurt catalog that could not be called informal. Hurt's originals are dotted with standards like "C.C. Rider," "Do Lord Remember Me," "Casey Jones," and a seven-minute "Stack-O-Lee." It's not as forceful, perhaps, as his best-known recordings, and some of the songs are duplicated on other releases, but the sound quality is OK and Hurt fans will almost certainly find it to their liking.
