Davenport learned to play organ and piano in his father's chuch from his mother who was organist in the church. He was going to follow in his mother's footsteps but he was expelled from the Theological Seminay in 1911 for playing Ragtime. Vaudeville and carnivals became his new career and he toured and recorded with blues singer Dora Carr for 2 years. Davenport suffered a stroke in 1938 that left his right hand paralyzed but he remained active as a vocalist until he could play again.
The material ranges from magnificent Cow Cow Davenport solo tunes to good and not-so-good duets with a host of performers. Ivy Smith and Dora Carr are the artists with whom Davenport works best. Since these were dubbed from 78s, don't expect pristine sound. -- Allmusic.
