Joe Turner might have reached his peak in popularity in the 50's with his rock and roll songs on Atlantic records but these recordings from the late 40's are some of my favorites. Many of the songs were redone for Atlantic and one listen to these versions will show that Big Joe was rockin' long before the term "rock and roll" became such a fashion statement. The first 4 songs and the last one are duets with another R&B legend, Wynonie Harris. They bellow back and forth and give off some exciting energy, swapping vocal lines over the riffing saxophones. The songs were originally released on the Alladin and Imperial labels. There are some liner notes about Big Joe and release days for the singles but no personel listing. All tracks feature solid rhythm, rock steady piano and thiose driving riffing saxophones that get your feet twitchin! If you are interested in BIg Joe these recordings are a great place to start.
