For those familiar with the British blues scene of the 1990s, The Nightporters and The Big Combo are not unfamiliar names. Guitar player and singer Vince Lee has been a mainstay on the South West music scene for decades. In 1996 he formed The Big Combo, a band that has almost become legendary in the Cornwell area. Bassist Al Wallis was all this time on his side. The Nightporters were a band who at the time was a guarantee for an evening of "fun" of the highest order. But in 2002, at the highlight of the band and after a very succesful tour in Canada, they split up.
Around 2003 Lee and Wallis came together with Martin Vowles (guitar) en Kevin Crowe (drums) of the Nightporters and they formed The Wildcards, a 4 piece band with a a combination of deep blues, West Coast swing, rockabilly, surf, boogie, jump and jive, rock 'n roll. Already in 2004, they threw their debut album 'On Fire' on the market. In 2006 they toured with Gary Primich and they had plans to do this all over again in 2007 but Primich's unexpected death prevented a new tour. 2007 followed with the successful second album "Raising Hell", full of good songs with a blistering rendition of 'St James Infirmary' and posthumously dedicated to Gary Primich.
In 2010, they delivered their third shoot "When The Moon Shines Bright"; nasty, horny and gritty are the keys to this album. Again a great mix of various styles, rockabilly, hints of reggae and ska, rhythm & blues, West Coast jump and even a touch of surf. In 2008 Vince Lee had met his partner Becca Langsford and since then they have performed together in various band settings. He produced and played most of the instruments on Becca's debut album 'Big Surprise' in 2011. Martin Vowles and Kevin Crowe returned to the re-established Nightporters for a one time European tour and in 2014 they joined female harmonica player Dana Dixon and the Big Kats.
