Although the Sicilian singer Eva Carboni mixes her blues with rock and jazz on her new album, it goes a bit too far to call this a blues rock album. The number of very intimate ballads is too high for that. This successor to the 'Italia Square' album can better be described as a very intimate blues album. Performed by Eva's band, which on this album consists of Mick Simpson (guitar), Giovanni Bruno (guitar), Dave Hunt (guitar, harmonica), Vincent Rossi (guitar) plus Andrius Insdell and Pete Nelson. Eva has a powerful, lived-in voice, which, strangely enough, often reminded me of a bluesy version of Shocking Blue singer Mariska Veres.
In addition to the many ballads, there is also occasionally some room for heavier rock songs such as the very dirty funky grooving Crossed A Line with mean screeching guitar work. The opener of the album Building A Wall is a lazy pumping song with Eva's intense soulful vocals and piercing guitar playing. Smoke And Mirrors is a penetrating slow blues with beautifully biting guitar and Eva's smoky vocals. The atmosphere remains very intimate in the heaving Gonna Find A Way and the intimately floating Call My Name. Bad Blood is an unpolished pumping acoustic blues, which is followed by the mix of blues and jazz in The Winter Of 51. Only in Sweet Mystery does Eva venture into dangerous territory via a cocktail jazz number. The closing song Another Door Closes shows some similarities with Fleetwood Mac's I Need Your Love So Bad. Lovers of intimate blues ballads have another great album with this album!
