Shar first got interested in music at the age of 6 years old. She was in a couple of talent shows in elementary school. At age 11 years old Shar learned to play the guitar. She was greatly inspired by Hubert Sumlin and the Beatles. Her Dad sung gospel back in the 1950's. His group, the Lambs Quartet, opened for Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, The Dixie Humming Birds and the Alabama Blind Boys etc. Shar has shared the stage with The Late Great Willie King, Oteil Burridge, Sam Lay, Denise LaSalle, T-Model Ford, Honey Boy Edwards, to name a few. Shar has played in Festivals here in the U.S. In April of 2009, she played the Coin Blues Fest in Malaga, Spain. Shar is on radio stations here in th U.S. and also in Europe. SharBaby did a 14 show Tour in England and Wales in 2011. Shar have a CD out called "Chicago Blues Alabama Style" with the Rhythm Blues Band backing her. She also plays in the Black Belt Roots Blues Festival in Eutaw, Alabama. Shar is involved with the Alabama Blues Project, teaching beginner's guitar and with the Blues in the Schools Programs. She is a member of the Alabama Blues Women of Alabama. Shar has been playing and singing for 44 years and enjoys every bit of it. SharBaby was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame on November 29, 2012. SharBaby did French tour of 22 shows throughout France, Luxemborg, and Belgium in March through April in 2013 Booked by Letroit Tours in France. SharBaby was awarded Top Blues performance of the year for a video 2012; Top Blues Band of the Year 2012; 2 songs from the " SharBaby's 11 O'clock Blues" Album named "Busted" and "Keep Your Mind To Yourself" both was awarded Best Blues Songs of the year for 2012.

There are two kinds of pot roast-one that's just meat and one that's sizzling in all sorts of chopped up ingredients like carrots, kale, onions, bell peppers and celery, plus a few bones of mysterious origin for a flavorful twist. R. C. Banks is, musically, the second kind. The Austin music veteran throws all sorts of nasty licks, like sweaty harmonica blasts and accordion notes that are almost drunk in their yearning, over his Waitsian observations on the new "Conway's Corner."

Structurally and lyrically, blues ballad "More Than the World To Me" is a musical figure eight, but there's so much invention between the notes that it sounds like nothing you've heard before. "If you know what love is, then you know what's right," Banks growls on "Now's the Time," sounding very much like he knows what's right. On "Pecan Trees," he sings about a girl who passes the tip jar without being asked and it sounds much more romantic than if he described her eyes as precious stones.

Do Banks a favor. No, do yourself a favor and buy this, one of the most invigorating CDs to pull up a chair and twist one off in a long time. ~Austin American-Statesman

It’s often been said that three-piece bands are the most expressive and most balanced musical units known to the rock world. Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Rush, The Police, Primus … These legendary acts struck upon the correct ratio of musicianship and progressive songwriting by exploring uncharted musical territories while highlighting the individual talents within their collective ranks. Pinnick Gales Pridgen show some of their influences with their brilliant version of seminal power trio Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love”. Composed of King’s X’s bassist/vocalist dUg Pinnick of the progressive metal band King’s X, southpaw blues-rock guitarist Eric Gales (Lauryn Hill, solo) and ambitious ambidextrous drummer and former Mars Volta member, Thomas Pridgen, PGP unites three versatile artists, who demand, as much as share, the musical spotlight. On the band’s debut, each member of PGP infuses the material with his own set of musical influences, transforming his individual instrument into a lead instrument. The absolutely slamming musicianship frames the recognizable melodies of these songs and catapults the music into the realms of psychedelic blues, hard rock, and progressive soul/R&B.

“This record is three guys, with music in us, who said, ‘Let’s go for it,’” says Pinnick. “It was built upon raw energy.” Produced Mike Varney, Pinnick Gales Pridgen’s debut contains all the stinging bite and all-out sonic boom of King’s X, The Mars Volta and The Eric Gales Band. dUg Pinnick, Eric Gales and Thomas Pridgen loved the experience of collaborating so much that they quickly headed back into the studio to record a second album of psychedelic blues, hard rock, and progressive soul/R&B together.

Magna Carta honcho Peter Morticelli and his partner Mike Varney dreamed up the team and brought them together to collaborate on this second album just months after the first album was released to such critical acclaim among the press and the fans. As for the chemistry between the three, Gales said it all clicked almost instantly. "There was a lot going on and it was really exciting. We got together, collaborated and just pulled and tugged at each other and that’s what came out. It was a beautiful outcome.”

Albert Collins started his career as a Blues artist with an album who did not have any success. His debut was later re-released under the name "Truckin' With AC". Thanks to Bob Hite (Canned Heat), he managed to sign with Imperial, around 1968, and recorded "Love Can Be Found Anywhere Even In A Guitar", an album who did not have a long-lasting success either. Collins then had to struggle for a few years, he even became a truck driver, until 1978, when he finally got back on the Blues track, with his "Ice Pickin'" album (Alligator). Since then, Albert Collins has never stopped playing, and managed to make it among the greatest names of the Blues. He died in 1993.

This Live recording was released after Collins' death, and perfectly illustrates his sharp playing-style. His guitar solos remain short, sometimes just a few notes, but are very intense. He seems to torture his guitar, over the rhythm of the drums and the brass section. His Blues are very different than those, much softer, of B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. His guitar touch is absolutely unimitable. "Put the Shoe On The Other Foot" is probably the most demonstrative track. The guitar solo doesn't start until late in the track, but when it comes, Collins litteraly explodes his Telecaster, and spits notes at the edge of pain.

Mister Collins was a wild Blues player, to be filed next to musicians such as Luther Allison, Buddy Guy or Stevie Ray Vaughan. This record is a must-have if you like powerful rhythmed Blues. And if you're lucky enough to have deaf neighbors, then turn up the volume, the sound of the album is just plain awesome. ~ Fred

The photograph of Laura Rain on the cover of Electrified captures her with her eyes tightly shut, one hand on her head, the other holding a microphone into which she is clearly letting rip. It’s a great photo, which captures an artist lost in the moment and, as visual metaphors go, it’s a pretty accurate summation of this album. Rain is blessed with a powerful, soulful beast of a voice, and she and her band, the Caesars, bring it to the forefront on the 10 retro-modern soul pieces on Electrified. The end result is a very impressive studio debut (they also released a live four track demo in 2012).

Some critics have compared Rain’s voice to Aretha Franklin. A closer comparison might be Amy Winehouse who, despite having more of a contralto range, had a similarly appealing catholic approach to her music. But where Winehouse mixed R&B, soul, jazz and reggae, Rain mixes R&B, soul, funk and blues. As a result, this is not a flat-out blues album, but is well worth a listen to any blues fan, but particularly if you are partial to the funk-influenced blues of Johnny “Guitar” Watson or the funky soul of Prince.

Laura Rain and the Caesars say they are reclaiming the storied Detroit soul music legacy from the ravages of time, neglect, and electronic dance music. On the evidence of Electrified, they are doing a pretty damn good job of it. Highly recommended.

San Francisco-based Ron Hacker has been playing the blues for more than 30 years. He got clued to the music in the juvenile jug in Indianapolis (was it really parking meters you were heisting, Ron?), where Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and the various Kings were the artists of choice among young black youth workers. Forget Elvis and that other 1950s crap. These guys were into Jimmy Reed and Elmore James. Throw in an apprenticeship with the late Yank Rachell and Hacker has never looked back. This 55-year-old has been a blues man all his life. "I didn't come at it from rock and roll," he says.His fourth CD, Back Door Man, vaults Hacker to a new level. Searing guitar, mostly but not all slide, in full roaring voice, backed by Artis Joyce on bass and Shad Harris on drums. A.J. is on Charlie Musselwhite's Ace of Harps and lately left Santa Cruz-based Sista Monica. Shad kept time for The Tommy Castro Band.

Ron Hacker's new Back Door Man packs the excitement of early Tommy and of bands like Blues Traveler or the Fabulous Thunderbirds at their best. It's much nastier though: downhome colloquial-familiar and downright raunchy. More intelligent too. Eight of the 13 tunes are Hacker originals, with covers including songs by Robert Johnson, John Estes, and of course Willie Dixon for the title cut. Hacker plays "Back Door Man" slow and heavy, driving, ponderous yet clean. Just when the slashing guitar gets repetitive, Hacker surprises. His own "My Bad Boy," about the wonderment of fatherhood, is destined to be a Hacker classic. It drives too, and is full of Hacker's special, humor-tinged intensity.

And who else comes up with lines like these, from "I Got Tattooed?"

I got tattooed and it ain't nobody's business.

Hacker packs a veritable arsenal on stage, ranging from a 1930 National steel body guitar with Ovation pickups -- "It's ugly but it's my baby and it's pretty to me" -- to a Stevie Ray autograph sunburst Strat. He's got a 1960 Gibson 125, like the National, it's for slide. So's a a 30 Regal, an old brown acoustic with 1960s DeArmond pickup. Ron brought the Regal back after Hack stopped using a new, baby-blue Danelectro, which despite upgraded tuning machines was just too volatile frequency-wise. Damn thing wouldn't stay in tune, in other words. Ron Hacker uses a new Fender Hot Rod De Ville -- "I love my amp," he says -- made more than a little bit dirtier with a first-edition 1985 Chandler tube driver and a Boss CS-3 compression-sustainer. "The tube driver gives you the '57 Chevy with cool pipes sound and the sustainer does what it says, holds the note for you so you can sing with your guitar," Ron says.

"Over the top guitar," one San Francisco blues watcher says of Ron Hacker. Yeah.

He lays down the fine original title track instrumental (you can hear the flame) and the autobiographical Mailman Blues and Prison Mind.

If you don't get wood from Billy Gibbons' Fool for Your Stockings or Yank Rachel's Peach Tree Blues you've got something wrong with your apparatus. This latest version by Ron of Fred McDowell's Red Cross Store is his best and the best anywhere, and Hacker's band's groove on Sonny Boy Williamson's Welfare Store is unparalleled.That band consists of Artis "A.J." Joyce on bass and Ronnie Smith on drums. That's all they need, that and the driving electric guitar of Ron Hacker.

Memphis-based Beale Street regular Preston Shannon lays down a compelling blend of blues and soul on this outing. Recorded in Memphis and produced by Willie Mitchell, Shannon is backed by a crack staff of Memphis all-star session players, with bassist Leroy Hodges and songwriter session ace Thomas Bingham contributing mightily to the proceedings. Shannon has a rep as a people-pleasing live performer, so it's no surprise to hear him put his own spin to a club favorite like Prince's "Purple Rain," leaving the guitar pyrotechnics of the original on the back burner, investigating instead the soulful content of the song in a fine, stripped-down version. There are solid blues on board, too, in "Jail of Love" and "Welfare Woman." But he can lay down the soul groove on a tune like "That's the Way I Feel About Cha" and "Just Between Me and My Woman" with equal ability. In addition to his stellar and very soulful vocal chops, Shannon also delivers some fine B.B. King-approved stinging guitar fills throughout, particularly effectively on the closing instrumental, "Cold Beer Good Time." In another era, this album could have come out on Stax, and could stand nicely against Albert King albums of that time frame. As it is in the here and now, All In Time stands instead as a fine modern-day soul-blues album with a vintage pedigree a mile long. ~Cub Koda

Blues guitarist Guy Davis seamlessly combines standards with his own original compositions as he breathes new life into the country blues idiom on Juba Dance, assisted by Fabrizio Poggi on harmonica. Named after a form of expression that originated in West Africa and involves foot-stomping and patting of the arms, legs, chest and cheeks, juba – also known as hambone — was brought to the New World via the slave trade and was a precursor to the blues. In many ways, it was used as an attempt to dance away one’s sorrows. With “Juba Dance,” Davis weaves both the beauty and pain of that experience into a rich, modern musical tapestry.

The son of celebrated actors and Civil Rights activists Ruby Dee and Ozzie Davis and an actor-director himself, Guy fell in love with the music by listening to his grandparents. He’s celebrated them throughout his career by weaving their experiences into his songs. Poggi, who co-produced this CD, is a native of Voghera, Italy, where he’s also journalist, and has performed frequently in the U.S. during the past 20 years, most notably with his band, Chicken Mambo.

J.D. Short (December 26, 1902 – October 21, 1962) was an American Delta blues singer, guitarist and harmonicist. He was a multi-instrumentalist, and possessed a distinctive vibrato laden, singing voice. Early in his career, Short recorded under a number of pseudonyms, including Jaydee Short and Jelly Jaw Short. His more noteworthy works included “Lonesome Swamp Rattlesnake” and “You’re Tempting Me.”

Born in Port Gibson, Mississippi, Short learned to play both the piano and guitar at a young age. He later mastered the harmonica, saxophone, clarinet and drums. Short performed locally in the Mississippi Delta at house parties, but relocated in 1923 to St. Louis, Missouri. Short went on to play along with the Neckbones, Henry Spaulding, David “Honeyboy” Edwards, Douglas Williams, and Big Joe Williams. In the 1930s, Short recorded for the Vocalion label. Henry Townsend in his autobiography, A Blue Life, told of incidents in St. Louis that affected both his and Short’s lives. Seemingly due to jealousy of his musical standing, Short attacked and twice stabbed Townsend. Later, by way of revenge, Townsend shot Short in his genitals, which resulted in Short losing both of his testicles. The account was also mentioned in Townsend’s obituary in The Guardian. Short continued performing in St. Louis after World War II, often as a one-man band and sometimes with his cousin, Big Joe Williams. Nevertheless, Short effectively disappeared from the music industry for over two decades, before re-emerging at the start of the blues revival period. He achieved belated national recognition, and went on to record further tracks for Delmark and Folkways. Some of his recordings were later released on Sonet. Short was featured in the 1963 documentary film, The Blues, singing “Slidin’ Delta”. However, he had already died in October 1962 of a heart attack, in St. Louis, at the age of 60.

James Lewis Carter Ford (born Forest, Mississippi, 1924 - died Greenville, Mississippi, 16 July 2013) was an American ‘Mississippi Delta Blues’ musician better known by his stage name, T-Model Ford. Unable to remember his exact date of birth, he began his musical career in his early seventies, recording for the Fat Possum Records label.

His musical style melded traditional Chicago blues and juke joint blues styles with the rawness of Delta blues and a rebellious attitude. Also known as “The Taildragger”, Ford, in reference to his age, was known to tell studio musicians, “T-Model Ford is going to remember you sorry fuckers how it’s done.”

If there is such a thing as a British 'blues pedigree', then Dave Kelly's sets the standard.

Kelly is a blues craftsman - a journeyman who has served his time with the best. In New York he jammed with Muddy Waters. He became a friend to Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker, who both felt the benefit of Dave's playing in their touring bands. It was Dave's big sister, the late Jo-Ann Kelly, who first opened his ears to the blues, although his passion for rock and roll - and especially the work of Buddy Holly - remains intact. In 1967 he joined The John Dummer Blues Band. After three albums and a solo project he continued to polish his style and technique throughout an adventurous career with some of Britain's finest players. When The Blues Band was formed in 1979, the post of slide guitarist and joint vocalist was a foregone conclusion - and bringing his friend, the bassist Gary Fletcher, along to that first rehearsal, was a bonus. Dave Kelly's guitar and vocals form the very backbone of The Blues Band's distinctive sound.

Today, after 21 years 'treading the boards' with the band, with his solo albums, duo tours with Paul Jones, and soundtrack work (for commercials and such projects as BBC TV's 'King of the Ghetto' and the Comic Strip's 'Strike!') Dave Kelly is firmly estabished as Europe's premier blues performer.

San Francisco blues guitar king Joe Louis Walker has been purveying his biting brand of West Coast blues since the '60s, with time off for good behavior (literally -- he spent years going "straight" attending school and playing gospel). On Between a Rock and the Blues he manages to keep one foot in the L.A. blues he grew up on (T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulson, et al.) and the other in a more modern sound, both in his songwriting and his impassioned fretwork. On the likes of "Eyes Like a Cat" and "Way Too Expensive," Walker's seasoned band whips up a sassy, swinging, old-school jump blues feel, while "Tell Me Why" leans into a classic-sounding Chicago-style shuffle. Walker's voice, still lithe and clear at 58, rings out authoritatively over it all, and his concise, stinging guitar makes no apologies for asserting its dominion over all it surveys. An unplugged stab at Delta blues on "Send You Back" feels less convincing, but other cuts, such as album-opening "I'm Tide" [sic] and "If There's a Heaven" show off a crunchier, grittier, more rock-inflected guitar tone and a compositional sensibility to match. When Walker taps into this more modern-sounding mode, though, it's important to realize there's no pandering involved. Even though his roots go back way further, he didn't begin establishing his own sound as a solo recording artist until the '80s, so it's entirely natural for his style to have picked up some rock & roll attack along the way. Crucially, he never overdoes it, maintaining just the right balance between the understated and the in-your-face. He hasn't stopped growing as a songwriter either -- Walker's original tunes dominate the album, and they reveal both a strict avoidance of lyrical blues tropes and a knack for deftly inserting thoughtful observations in between burning riffs and gut-level grooves. ~J. In a pop world deluged by tragic tales of teen stars gone horribly wrong, New Orleans' Amanda Shaw can seem an oasis of genuine, countrified charm. Just 16-years-old when she cut this bracing, often effervescent Rounder Records debut with the Cute Guys, (her band of country/bluegrass vets whose youngest member is three decades her senior,) Shaw's strong vocal and violin performances underscore a talent as unique as her biography. A classical violin prodigy who-- at 8-years-old--became the Baton Rouge Symphony's youngest soloist, Shaw switched to playing a diverse gumbo of Cajun-rooted music before she'd reached her teens. It's that refusal to be genre-typecast that powers much the album, as Shaw follows her muse from the effervescent, clear-eyed title track lament, into deceptively effortless cocktails of funk, country, rock, and r&b. Most of "Pretty Runs Out" is seasoned with a savory New Orleans sass, as the playful violin-horn-guitar interplay of "Brick Wall" attests with funky verve. The swampy "Chermolito" wades into bluesy Bonnie Raitt territory, while she molds the haunting "Garden of Eden" and her cover of the Diane Warren-by-way-of-Cyndi Lauper ballad "I Don't Want to Be Your Lover" forcefully into her own image. The joyous "French Jig" and a medley of reels display her nimble fiddle chops, even if "Woulda Coulda Shoulda" and the closing "Easy On Your Way Out" let her Gwen Stefani jones get the best of her. Yet Shaw's vibrant eclecticism rarely seems forced. Her musical gifts are miles beyond the manufactured teen stars who hog the headlines.(~~Jerry McCulley)

Willie D Warren was one of the old time Detroit bluesmen deserving of recognition that he should have but didn’t receive. Back in the 1950s whilst playing with the Otis Rush band in Chicago, he was credited with inventing the electric bass by tuning down the three low strings on his guitar.

Last Blues – Volume One & Two, originally recorded for UK label, Bluetrack Records and now released by Blues Archive are exactly what they say. Recorded only a few months before his death in 2000 aged 76, these tracks give an insight into the heartfelt blues vocals and subtle guitar playing of a Detroit blues master.

Full credit for these recordings must go to Howard Glazer, the Detroit guitarist who features alongside Willie on these tracks, in getting him into the studio and recording such a large body of important work. This is especially poignant as throughout Willie D warren’s long career, he remained woefully under-recorded.
