On the heels of the success of Guitar Hero, Brian released his sophomore record "Suicide King". He followed up this record with regional live dates and session work on Grammy award winning records. While honing his live show, Brian wrote, recorded and released his third record, "One True Thing". Svensk-norsk blueskvartett med stor popularitet i Norge tidlig på 1980-tallet, lenge før blues ble allemannseie her i landet. Gitaristen Knut Reiersrud hadde tidligere spilt i Hartvik & The Heartbreakers, og utgitt en EP med dem. Sven Zetterberg sang og spilte munnspill, Carsten Loly sang og spilte trommer, mens Bertil Petterson spilte bass. Denne kvartetten spilte inn bandets eneste album, Rooster Blues (1983). Bandet hadde tydeligvis et bassproblem etter hvert, for i juni 1982 begynte Jan Erik Salater som bassist, men bandet hadde allikevel Jørun Bøgeberg som bass-vikar i ny og ne.

Etter hvert ble Torbjørn Sunde med på trombone og Sigurd Køhn på saksofon. Bandet ble oppløst på midten av 80-tallet, men nesten alle norske musikerne som er nevnt her, med unntak av Salater, var deretter med i bandet Heavy Gentlemen, som ofte var å se og høre på fjernsyn, men som ikke utga plater.

Born in South Florida and raised in N.Y.C., Lee’s earliest influence to be a musician was when his dad took him to see a Pete Seeger Concert on a pier on Staten Island. Shortly thereafter Delray saw Elvis Presley for the first time. It was a broadcast of his “69 Comeback” that changed his life forever. Lee was 11 years old when he found an old nylon string guitar in the garage. He convinced his dad to get him a few lessons and after they were done he took it on his own from there. Delray played with just about any band that would let him all through the eighties. Ranging from Oldies to Country and even Punk and Heavy Metal. In late ’89 he met Duke Lee. Duke gave him a Muddy Waters record and told him, “This is where all that stuff you listen to came from.” Early on, Lee was highly influenced by Muddy Waters, Alvin Lee, Jimi Hendrix, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and especially Buddy Holly. His later influences included Albert King, BB King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Luther Allison and the list goes on.

This four-disc box from London's JSP Records collects an astounding 100 songs recorded by John Lee Hooker in Detroit from the years 1948 to 1952, including his first two sides ever, the signature tunes "Boogie Chillen" and "Sally Mae." Most of the tracks here are done solo, with Hooker's ever-present foot-stomping, although a few feature other musicians on loose-limbed blues boogies.Since Hooker never significantly altered his style during his long career, these first recordings set the stage for all that came after, and he arguably never sounded fresher or better. Charlie Baty, formerly of Little Charlie & The Nightcats, has dubbed Bergara as “one of the most talented guitarists in the universe.” Junior Watson echoes similar sentiments. So just who is Gonzalo Bergara? He is one of the most respected Gypsy jazz guitarists in the world, making his first electric record while demonstrating his affection for all kinds of blues music. Bergara is based in Buenos Aires, Argentina with his trio that plays over 100 shows around the world and even more in their home town. Before he embarked on Gypsy jazz, Bergara spent time in the U.S. due to his love for the blues. Baty met him while playing at Cozy’s on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City, CA. He explains directly in the liners, “Gonzalo came up and presented me a demo CD with a tune on it that was based on my song “Percolatin’.” I don’t routinely listen to every CD that is given to me, but I was curious about this one, and I was absolutely floored by it. I realized that he had not only captured my sound in his solo but had actually written a more interesting theme, and executed the solo better. I suggested that Gonzalo call the song “Woosh!” because it went by so quickly (like a car racing past you on the freeway).” That song and many others are featured on this record, the first blues record and first record to feature Gonzalo’s vocals.

All tunes were written by Gonzalo except Jimmy Reed’s “You Don’t Have to Go.” From the Texas shuffles of “No More” and “Levi” to the swinging opener “Drawback” to the Hendrix-inspired “Singing My Song,” Gonzalo’s guitar rings true with amazing fretwork and the creation of otherworldly sounds. He seems equally comfortable picking at a furious tempo as he does bending notes and going for a certain amount of feedback. Then he changes it up completely with the ballad “Ines” that eventually builds to an electric crescendo before he brings it back down. Phil Collen, lead guitarist of British rock band Def Leppard & alternative roots/rock band Manraze, started Delta Deep as an extreme blues project. The band has been likened to “Aretha Franklin & Chaka Khan performing with Led Zeppelin”. Phil’s love and appreciation for the blues since childhood enabled him to move forward quickly with the band’s inception in 2012. “Blues was created out of something completely different from what we hear today. I grew up listening to rock music but then I found out it was all based on blues. Jimmy Page, Hendrix, all of those guys-they got it from blues. Today’s musicians miss out on what blues is completely about. There’s a type of ‘blues style’ but not actual blues music. I just don’t hear true blues anymore unless I go back and listen to really old music.” With that reasoning Phil decided to change the tide of what he was hearing.

Collen met vocalist Debbi Blackwell-Cook in 2010. She not only performed at his wedding but is also his wife Helen’s godmother. Blackwell-Cook’s performance history includes theatre, a stint as lead singer in an 80’s r-n-b band, background vocalist for Michael Buble and Gregory Hines and singing for Pope John Paul II. After the wedding Debbi visited Phil and Helen often in California. Pretty soon Phil and Debbi were singing Motown tunes and classic blues numbers around the house. Debbi also eventually sang on several Manraze releases and currently loans background harmonies to the 2015 self-titled Def Leppard album, their first release in eight years. She and Phil began performing live locally including a special performance at San Diego’s Gerson Institute and a television broadcast for UTV.

One afternoon in 2013 in a New Zealand kitchen Phil, Debbi, and Helen wrote the first of ten tunes that would soon become the self-titled 2015 debut album ‘DELTA DEEP’. Upon returning to the states they continued to write. Phil and Debbi began recording tracks in Phil’s home studio. During this time a chance encounter with drummer Forrest Robinson allowed Phil to share his ideas about the great extreme blues project that had taken shape.Forrest Robinson, a phenomenal drummer who has roots in heavy metal and played for The Crusaders, Joe Sample, TLC, and India.Arie met Phil years prior at an India.Arie concert. The reconnection years later proved vital to the continued growth of Delta Deep. With Forrest entering the band as their drummer/percussionist Delta Deep continued to gain headway securing several live performances for radio and internet podcasts all the while recording for their debut release.

Stone Temple Pilots’ bassist Robert DeLeo completes the soulful quartet and lends his fiery and melodic bottom end sounds to the group’s diversified catalog. DeLeo’s love of jazz & Motown styled rhythm & blues offers a stealthy foundation that allows Delta Deep to showcase a dramatic range of untouchable musical movement. And with DeLeo’s entry the harmonious puzzle is complete.

Here's the deal. I was born a poor white child (just like everybody else) in the Appalachian Mountains of Southeastern KY. My folks moved to Ohio when I was two years old. Somewhere around the age of eight years old I became severely addicted to music. My father liked bluegrass and country, my mother liked rock and the pop music of the day. The one musical style we all agreed upon was the blues. What I'm doing now both in the studio and live is playing what comes naturally to me, that being a fusion of all the styles mentioned above. My music fits in whatever category, you decide.

Although the 1970 album Losers Weepers was not a landmark in Etta James' career, and doesn't include any of her most famous or outstanding tracks, it's a solid enough album that has an edge on some of the other LPs from the later part of her time with Chess Records. To its credit, it doesn't seem to be trying as hard or self-consciously to absorb some influences from contemporary soul trends; largely, it lets James do what she does best: give romantic songs everything she's got, without holding back on some of her grittiest phrasing and throatiest belting.

Were the material up to her vocal finesse, this would be up there with the likes of what Aretha Franklin was doing at the time. It's not, but the songs are OK vehicles for her tense and frustrated takes on love. The title track gave her a small R&B hit, and is certainly the best song here. If it's a little reminiscent of her own "I'd Rather Go Blind" in the verse, the jubilant, ascending chorus sets it off as a worthwhile tune on its own merits (and the next track, "Weepers," is a "part two" of sorts that also served as the B-side). It's a satisfying mix of ballads and more uptempo cuts (like "Look at the Rain," written by Jackie Edwards, famous for writing early hits for the Spencer Davis Group), also putting some pop into the arrangements and melodies alongside the expected soul. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

If the Blues world had a piano player extraordinaire and unparalleled, on the one hand, and underestimated and undervalued who deserved much higher attention and recognition, on the other hand, obviously Booker T. Laury is his name. Virtuoso piano player who first recorded in his late seventies, on this compilation collected from concerts on different venues in Austria during "Stars of Boogie Woogie" tour in 1987, Booker T. Laury covers sides by Roosevelt Sykes, Sunnyland Slim, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers and Chuck Berry listening of which makes discussion about authenticity nonessential since covers sound as authentic and original as his own compositions. Unique and distinctive, lowdown, bone deep playing style with accentuated left hand lines if ocean is waiving, whisky soaked voice, self-confident personality whose recorded musical legacy is small but rich and influential, is Mr. Booker T. Laury. When he plays he is dissociated and left alone with the Blues which he felt deeply and tried to deliver in a best known way, through black and white keys, the mission he fulfilled. Robert Burton Hubele is a Canadian singer-songwriter, who has been active since 1972 as acoustic, electric and dobro blues, jazz and rock guitarist. He worked for years in the steel industry and wrote his first song at the age of twenty. “House Of The Rising Sun” by The Animals was Robert’s first interest in music. Hubele hit will be interested in the music of the old blues men and later by Chuck Tracy (a seasoned musician and his roommate) in jazz. His descent from rural Alberta can also be heard in his music. Commencement 70s hit Hubele captivated by the slide dobro, after hearing Bonnie Raitt. Raitt learned to play slide guitar by Mississippi Fred McDowell. After his album “Highway Of Dreams” (2012) Hubele (again together with his buddy producer Brad Steckel) recently released the album “She Will not Talk To Me” off. It is his tenth studio album with ten original songs and one “hidden” track.

“She Will not Talk To Me” is beside the opener of the album, a song from the movie “No Men Beyond This Point”. It is, as most of the songs on the album, a song with a story. Here the story of the man who finds the right woman, who turns out to be but just then in the company of the wrong man. “Life Is Funny” is a blues ballad with a positive message and “Sweet Talk” an uptempo blues song, which he was still in the prices. “Get (Down) To The Bottom,” a hallucinatory raga / blues song, is biting the special duck in the blues. It’s a song that no doubt remains as nahangen. “I Cried Your Name” is a country song, which refers to its country of origin and “Such A Little Thing”, a song about giving and receiving, is a mid-tempo rocker swamp, which does well with this. With “Without You” the pace is even more aware of, and then unwind in the country ballad “Baby Come Down”. Hubele wrote after a tour in Portugal down his impressions in the Latino rocker “Portugal”. The regular valve called “Oh Mama” and is a ballad that Hubele wrote as a tribute to his mother. She made under difficult circumstances, without ever complaining, for him and seven other children. The promised “hidden” track called “If You Love Christmas”. It’s a mid-tempo ballad, for which sounds very promising and already promising, the next Christmases. And “She Will not Talk To Me” Robert Burton Hubele again proves its versatility and musicianship. For lovers of “easy blues” music and where you can lie back in reverse, this is the right choice.

"They have been on the stage for over 38 years, have performed on more than 4,000 occasions in 14 countries and have released more than 26 albums ? these figures highlight the impressive achievements of the Blues Company and demonstrate that the musicians gathered around the mastermind Todor Todorovic have had an enormous influence on the blues in Germany. However, far more impressive than the statistics is the manner in which Todorovic, known by everyone simply as "Tosho", celebrates the blues with his buddies on stage. Tosho lets the guitar fly with his pieces that bubble with elegance, while his unmistakeable voice gives the songs their distinctive expression.

The Blues Company have always been open-minded to new techniques. They were among the audiophile pioneers, who in the late 1980s brought out the first blues CDs, and later the first SACDs and 5.1 surround recordings - so we were the second Blues band in the world. But one thing was still missing in our releases: a live in the studio recording with an audience.

The trick with a "Silent Concert" is that visitors, unlike at normal concerts, do not appreciate the music through a PA, but through headphones. Thus, they are able to receive perfect stereo sound anywhere in the room and can even adjust the volume themselves. However, only a relatively small circle of people can experience this concert enjoyment. For technical reasons, the number of listeners is limited to a maximum of 100. The auditorium was equipped with sofas, chairs, beanbag chairs and floor lamps, and the band did not play on a stage, but rather dispersed in the audience. The sound engineer was able to create an individual in-ear monitor mix at the highest tonal level for each of the musicians involved as well as for the stereo mix for the audience. This culminated in the Blues Company presenting itself at its very best: with crisp Chicago blues and gentle ballads, with crackling guitar solos and a blasting brass section, with many rock and soul additions, and with highlights from concerts past. The audio recording literally vibrates with vivacity. For the band, as well as for the audience, this was a great, exciting, unforgettable experiment.

Because the ten songs on Beat The Devil go off in all directions it’s very difficult to feel any sort of flow to the whole thing. It’s like listening to a soundtrack album when you haven’t seen the film — all the songs are good, but you need some sort of context to put them into. Roy Buchanan - The Genius Of The Guitar: His Early Recordings (2 CD)

During the early 1970s Roy Buchanan was feted as the greatest rock guitarist the world had ever known. This superb new CD from Jasmine takes a step back into his early career where he spent many years scuffling as a guitar slinger in numerous bands and doing a substantial amount of session work.

Collected across this 44 track 2 CD set are examples of his dynamic guitar contributions to a bevy of national, regional and downright parochial recording artists including Dale Hawkins, Bob Luman, Freddy Cannon, and Danny and The Juniors. As well as all that there a couple of singles released under his own name plus a couple or more tracks where the jury is still out as to the identity of the guitar player.

Outstanding guitar work is what this CD is all about and although these early recordings don't quite give the full picture of his exemplary talent for improvisation and creativity that would come in the 70s, they certainly show the signs of it developing, and tracks such as 'The Jam (Part 1 and 2)' demonstrate his dynamic and original guitar sound.

Tracks full of blues and jazz and performed all by one guy. Charlie Glasgow has recorded all the tracks and played all the instruments on three consecutive CDs. He's had invites from blues festivals and enjoyed world wide airplay in eight countries and Canada on blues stations. Charlie played all the guitar parts through Marshall and Fender tube amps and a few over the Eleven Rack system. Bass guitar was done with an Ibanez RB800 direct and organ performed on a Hammond M3 through a 145 Leslie cabinet. A DW kit was used on the third release for a more organic approach. The "Dark Bridges" CD was started in Omaha and then completed later in Tucson, AZ. Of course the wife and I have moved again, but that's life. Much thanks to my good friend Alex Austyn from Digital Pulse Studios in Kansas City for his part in the original recording sessions on "Too Many Nights". He also played the drum tracks on this song and did a stellar job. Thank you Alex! I think that you'll find something for everybody on these tracks and remember that it was just one person on a lonely journey. I can't wait to start on the next album. I also wish to thank Brian May for his inspiration on "The Story" as he's been one of my guitar hero's since the very first Queen album was released. Big Thanks to my wife Elaine Glasgow for the artwork and patience. Elaine painted the Quincy Memorial bridge which is where the track Dark Bridges drew its inspiration. On the back of the cover is the old West Quincy Drive Inn where I spent my summer evenings watching the great movies from yesteryear. Sadly it closed down in 1976 which was my senior year in high school. The second screen does have a giant religious cross as mentioned in the song and the bridge does have it's dark side along with the Mississippi river that flows beneath it. Black Gypsy Eyes is dedicated to my wife whom I met over thirty years ago at a show. Hands Up in the Air is about all the street beggars and panhandling that goes on. Baby Treats Me Good is about my wife and her cooking skills. I never complain after her meals! Trapeze Doors is all about the dark underworld of carnival and circus life. It really should be named Trapeze Floor, but it's also an entrance into another world. Wearing all the hats goes beyond just playing all the parts and running the Pro Tools system for a decent recording. It also means contacting and befriending our wonderful disk jockeys who promote the blues material and even the pawn shop managers who give us that great deal on an old recording mic or hard to find guitar. Après trois ans d’absence, Mojo Machine se reforme en octobre 2007 avec une nouvelle mouture. A l’image des pionniers du genre (Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Little Walter) comme quelques héritiers (Red Devils, Mark Hummel, Johnny Winter), le groupe affirme un style rurale et électrique fidèle à leurs origines centre bretonnes: authentique et épuré. Depuis octobre 2007 les concerts s’enchaînent, aujourd'hui Mojo Machine cumule pas moins de 400 concerts.

Issu du clonage entre Muddy Waters et AC/DC, Mojo Machine : ça transpire, ça ramone, ça tabasse. Sur scène, les chiens sont lâchés, bien loin des clichés du blues, ce combo électrique en a déjà maté des plus balaises que vous. La basse et la batterie assurent une rythmique ravageuse, sous les coups de bélier de l’harmonica. Accompagné de deux guitares, un chant rocailleux complète la machine bien huilée de ce groupe ravageur.

Swampcandy - 2 albums: Midnight Creep-Noonday Stomp / She Calls To Me

Swampcandy is a primitive blues influenced Americana duo. Ruben Dobbs' aggressive finger-picking and rhythmic style (which often adds up to sounding like more than one guitar) combined with Joey Mitchell's bass playing, pounding kick drum and percussive bass throttling (representing the presence of a full drum kit) easily fill up the sonic space normally created by a trio or even a four-piece group. Dobbs' soulful, passionate vocals are the glue that holds it all together and makes this band tick.

Swampcandy was founded by Dobbs in 2007 and functioned with various lineups until he teamed up with Joey Mitchell in 2010 and the permanent die was cast. After only a few months together, the duo began to tour aggressively and have not slowed down since. Whether its a 20-minute opening slot or a 3-hour headlining gig, they give the audience 110% when they perform, leaving the stage exhausted and crowd satisfied.

2014 was their most productive and rewarding year to date. Not only did they play a staggering 250+ shows at venues and festivals across the U.S. and U.K., they also won the 2014 Floydfest 'On The Rise' competition, coming in first place out of 37 bands competing at the festival. Their latest album, Midnight Creep/Noonday Stomp, placed in NBT Music Radio's Top 150 Albums of 2014, and the track "1000 Miles" placed in the NBTMR Top 150 Singles category. They were awarded "Best Opening Act 2014" at the #1 venue in the world under 500 seats, Rams Head On Stage (Annapolis, MD), and received one of college radio's bigger nods when they were given Radio Flag's Radio Star Award for "Best Artist Fall 2014." The boys were also recognized as one of the top 20 bands to watch in the Mid Atlantic region by Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine.

A spicy mix of rarities, alternates and previously unissued R&B goodies from South Louisiana and S.E. Texas, where you are never too far from a bayou and some good rockin’ music. This 15th compilation in the “By The Bayou” series takes us back to the R&B sounds you would have heard belting out of a Louisiana juke joint on a steamy night in the 1950s or early 1960s. All of the tracks included were recorded in that party state, although some of the artists were based in Texas, crossing the state line to make music in studios based in Crowley and Lake Charles.

Amongst the rarities unveiled are three tracks cut in New Orleans but released by Flip Records of Hollywood, a label primarily known for doo wop. We also have some classic Classie Ballou, Chris Kenner’s first record, a few complete unknowns, a bunch of alternate takes and, most excitingly, two previously undocumented Barbara Lynn tracks, her first recordings.

Amongst the better-known songs are four formidable rockers: ‘Wild Cherry’ by Leroy Washington, ‘Roll Roll Roll’ by Guitar Jr, ‘Shoo, Shoo Chicken’ by Charles Sheffield and an alternate take of ‘Oh Babe’ by Lester Robertson.

Depending on the artist, the blues can be either elaborate or minimalist. Some bluesmen go for large bands and full horn sections; they put a lot of time and effort into their arrangements. Others, however, are happy accompanying themselves, and Mojo Stu obviously falls into the second category. On Good Gravy, the rugged, whiskey-voiced singer has no band. It's just Stu and his acoustic guitar -- no drums, no bass -- and that minimalist approach serves him well on intimate, rural-style offerings like "Leave That Good Gal Here," "Poor Lonely Man," and "Woke Up With the Blues." Although Good Gravy was recorded in Springfield, PA, this CD doesn't have a Northern blues outlook. Good Gravy is very much an album of acoustic, Southern-minded country blues, and Stu shows himself to be an appealing slide guitarist throughout the album. While most of the songs have vocals, Stu also provides a few instrumentals -- which is a good thing because it is nice to hear him really stretch out on the acoustic guitar. Some artists would be at a disadvantage if they had to accompany themselves, but for Stu, minimalism is advantageous. Many of the great country bluesmen who came out of the Deep South and Texas in the '20s, '30s, and '40s often accompanied themselves, and those are the sort of artists Stu obviously identifies with. By CD standards, Good Gravy is skimpy; it only lasts about 40 minutes. But while the album is short on quantity, it isn't lacking when it comes to quality. Although far from groundbreaking, Good Gravy is a satisfying effort that will appeal to die-hard country blues enthusiasts. ~Alex Henderson

The third album by blues-futurist singer/songwriter Mojo Stu (no relation, one assumes, to the Simpsons character Disco Stu) is more of the same that's found on his earlier albums Not for Nothin' and Good Gravy, but with a few new twists. For example, the throbbing "Hootchie Mama" kicks off with a prominent electronic dance beat that underpins Mojo Stu's gravelly, sly voice and bottleneck guitar; the song even has a pure pop bridge that brings it well out of the blues mainstream. The rest of the album is similar: firmly rooted in electric Chicago-style blues, but neither beholden to the style in a retro-fetishistic fashion nor welding on inappropriate contemporary elements. Other highlights include the mid-tempo, gospel-tinged shuffle "Leave It Gone" and the scorching "My Mama, She Don't Love Me," which features both an impossibly low-register fuzz bass hook and some subtle turntable work. Michael Burks was a true Bluesman. Not just because he was a 3rd generation musician of the blues, but because he embraced every part of the Blues and made it part of the man he was. He knew your name. What city you were from. He remembered your stories. Michael was on the road more than he was home. You brought him joy during that time. A stripped-back acoustic duo set recorded at Peppers Cafe as part of the Gloucester Rhythm and Blues Festival 2015. A passionate, fun and energetic performance of some of Mark and Rick's favourite songs from their repertoire.

Sons of the Delta was formed by two south-western UK bluesmen, Mark Cole (vocals, harp, slide guitar) and Rick Edwards (guitar, vocals) back in the early Zeros. They were joined some years later by drummer Martin Fitzgibbon and more recently by bass player Lyndon Webb. They play earthy, passionate blues flavoured with the many roots music styles from the southern states of the USA.
