Nina has the looks of a retro black and white movie star with a sassy voice that will remind you of modern day belters like Rhiannon Giddens, Victoria Williams, and Valerie June. With a tinge of “I told you so” in her voice, Nina takes on critics and fans with her U.S. debut, Watch Me. This album is set to release on March 3, 2017, on CSP Records, an independent label out of Texas. Label President Jimmy Rogers, who has spearheaded many a blues artist over the past 40 years, was so knocked out by her that he signed her on the spot.

Recorded and produced by Morten Wittrock both in Denmark and at Austin’s famous 5th Street Studios, Nina brings her distinctive vocal and personal style to a fabulous collection of original Americana songs written by producer Wittrock and Ray Weaver. These two music veterans were able to wrap the melodies and words to fit this young budding talent. Ray Weaver is an American songwriter living in Denmark whose work has been compared to Kevin Welch and Steve Earle. Combine that with Morten’s rocking blues the two succeed with songs like, “Impossible To Resist” a duet with Colin Brooks, who is a former member of Band Of Heathens now an Austin session player. The two bring a playful and flirty flavor to the tune with a funky back beat. A Bourbon Street drenched “Big Easy” recalls her American father’s Louisiana roots complete with a slide guitar that echoes a slow gait down the sidewalk.

Raised in Denmark by her American father and Danish mother, Nina grew up listening to legends like Delbert McClinton, Keb’ Mo, Taj Mahal and Bob Dylan while working beside her father in his local Mexican restaurant. That myriad of influences continues as Nina accompanied her parents when they did the backstage catering for artists like B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Feat, John Hiatt and more. The music of legends flowed deeply into Nina’s heart, and she couldn’t wait to make her own music.

She began working in the studio with the award-winning Danish producer Morten Wittrock when she was just 15-years- old, doing everything from making coffee to editing Pro Tools tracks. When she turned 18, she bartended at Copenhagen’s storied Mojo Blues Bar continuing her musical education through experience.

Nina’s unique blend of New Orleans earthiness, a little Etta James vocal styling along with some Scandinavian sweetness this young songbird, brings a magical mojo to every song. Her voice, along with the playing and production creates a listening experience that honors both Nina’s deep commitment to her musical roots and her desire to do something entirely new.

Earlier this year this young woman moved to New Orleans to experience their extraordinary culture first hand and now she is residing in Nashville, TN to embed herself in their music community. Stacy Jones: Seattle based singer song writer and multi-instrumentalist. She is the winner of the 2016 Washington Blues Society Best of the Blues award for Blues Songwriter and Best Washington Blues recording, and 2015 IMEA award for “Blues Song of the Year,” for the single “Can’t Do Nothin’ Right,” from her 2015 album Whiskey, Wine & Water, and the 2014 and 2010 Washington Blues Society Female Vocalist of the year.

An amazingly prolific artist who brought a brisk air of urban sophistication to his frequently stunning presentation, John "Peter" Chatman - better known as Memphis Slim - assuredly ranks with the greatest blues pianists of all time. He was smart enough to take Big Bill Broonzy's early advice about developing a style to call his own to heart, instead of imitating that of his idol, Roosevelt Sykes. Champion Jack Dupree was one of the greatest barrelhouse and boogie woogie piano players to ever come out of New Orleans. He played piano from an early age and over the years made his living at various times as a boxer (he was briefly the lightweight champ of Indiana, hence his nickname), cook, hustler, card sharp, and piano player. He recorded hundreds of singles and albums under various names including Meat Head Johnson, Lightnin’ Jr. and Brother Blues. Although he only had one hit – "Walking the Blues" a duet with Teddy McRae, was on the R&B charts for 11 weeks in 1955 – he was a prolific composer and one of his songs "Junker’s Blues" was often borrowed by other artists including Professor Longhair who called it "Tipitina", Fats Domino who changed it to "The Fat Man", and Lloyd Price who borrowed it for "Lawdy Miss Clawdy". Dupree never liked the racism of his home country and spent almost 40 years living in Europe, where he was highly regarded. He returned to the US in 1990 to play the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and had a triumphant homecoming. "Dan Gone West" is the debut album from Paragraph8ight, one of the three participants at this year Møblomania Blues Challenge which took place during a few days in Silkeborg, Denmark. Paragraph8ight was, according to the liner notes, formed as a quintet in Lyngby near Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1982, and the songs on "Dan Gone West" was also written back in the early years. Thus, it is an album that has been in the making for many years.

There have also been some changes in the band line-up, partly because the band's original bassist, Chris Gjerulff, sadly passed away in 2015. He was replaced by Henrik West, who now is complementing the band core consisting of Iens Simonsen (vocals), Jens Gerlif (guitar), Lars la Cour (drums) and Thomas Melau (harmonica). In addition, there's also a smaller army of chorus singers, keyboardists and horn players. Therefore it is not surprising that the sound on "Dan Gone West" is great with rich, soulful and swinging arrangements that characterize large parts of the album.

Using several harmonica maestros on a disc dedicated to one of the all time harmonica giants - Little Walter - seems like a fitting thing to do.

And that's exactly what Dennis Gruenling did.

Being a formidable player himself, on I Just Keep Lovin' Him, Gruenling is joined by Kim Wilson, Rick Estrin and Steve Guyger - all Little Walter enthusiasts - on harmonica and vocals; along with Dave Gross, Bill Hunt, Rusty Zinn and Bob Welsh on guitar.

On bass, he has Scot Hornick, Steve Wolf and Kedar Roy; and Mike Bram and Marty Dodson on drums.

There’s also Doug “Big Daddy” Sasfai on sax; and - last but certainly not least – Mrs. Gruenling - Gina Fox on vocals.

Attempting to avoid this tribute from being a compilation of overdone covers of Little Walters' greatest hits, Gruenling chose some of the legend’s more obscure works.

The list includes: “Up the Line,” “Lovin' Man,” “I Got To Go,” “Hot Shot,” “Too Young To Know,” “Corbella,” “If You Were Mine,” “My Little Machine,” “Teenage Beat,” “As Long As I Have You,” “Temperature,” “One Of These Mornings,” “That's It,” and “You're Sweet.”

Not being a vocalist himself, Gruenling distributed that duty equally among the four band mates who do sing.

“Lovin' Man” features Guyger singing like one of the many great Chicago bluesmen he's backed up throughout the years, with he and Gruenling both getting in their share of hot licks on the harp.

“Hot Shot” is a hot instrumental. This one features Gruenling alone, and quite aptly, handling the harp work, with great rhythm from Bram and Hornick on the drums and standup bass; and sharp, steady guitar from Dave Gross.

Estrin, with clearly one of the most distinguishable voices, takes over the microphone on “Too Young To Know.” On this track, the man, whose magnetism is surpassed by none, also provides some of the best harp work on the disc.

Doing what seems to come naturally to her, Gina Fox heats it up a bit on “If You Were Mine.” Sultry is a word that - if not careful - can easily become redundant when she is the topic. This track also features tremendous sax work from Big Daddy.

Oddly enough, “Teenage Beat” - an instrumental track that features Gruenling, Estrin, and Wilson all kickin' it on harp - is highlighted by the rhythm section. Wolf and Dodson are absolutely on fire on this one.

It's Wilson's turn to lead on “As Long As I Have You,” and when he's leading, you can never go wrong. Being one of the most soulful white singers these ears have ever heard, and certainly one of the best at blowin' a harp, automatically makes this another of the disc’s best. ~Review by Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro

His intoxicating, rough and dynamic Rockpalast performance on November 4, 1976 marked the big European breakthrough for young Canadian multi-instrumentalist Pat Travers who had just landed a major deal with Polydor in London. At that time, his band consisted of Peter “Mars” Cowling on bass and Nicko McBrain who is meanwhile drumming for Iron Maiden. Several albums later, in the 80’s, when hard rock and blues orientated rock lost its impact due to punk and new wave, Travers moved back to the US where the scene was still hooked on the genre. Still, Travers has the best reputation as a great live act with all his full speed energy and he connected well with his fans.

On November 4, 1976, a young guitarist and singer performed with his band at Rockpalast, is not only delivering a sensational show but also giving definite proof of a musical potential yet to be fulfilled. Almost four decades later, these recordings were finally unearthed and are officially available. Travers played together with bass player Peter Mars Cowling and drummer Nicko McBrain, the same Nicko McBrain that pounds the skins for Iron Maiden. I first saw Nicko play with his band Street Walker, Travers recalls. They were about to split up, and I caught one of their last shows. Nicko’s fiery, funky and energetic drumming style really impressed me. The trio’s trip to Cologne itself was one to remember as well: We used a small plane, a Beechcraft King Air. When descending the air pressure increased too quickly, so we all had sore ears and sinuses for a while right up until the show. Also the setup for the gig at Rockpalast seemed a bit underwhelming at first: The vocal monitor speakers on stage were very small and not sufficient at all, Travers recalls smiling, overlooking the fact that the aforementioned sore ears possibly were also responsible for this impression. And although there was a live audience, they were very far away from us and not really visible due to the bright stage lighting. So what we could hear was not as loud as we were used to, and interacting with the audience proved to be a challenge. Looking back on the recordings today, there’s no trace of these problems, none at all. The grooves hammered out by Cowling and McBrain are simply stunning and add that special something to Travers’ blues-based (in the broadest sense), yet hard rocking and modern sounds. The man himself blasts out each and every riff and solo with energy and passion as well as singing his heart out. In other words: Just these three guys are making a hell of a lot of music.

Just in time for summer barbecue season--this compilation was released two days after the Fourth of July--comes the ultimate Buckwheat Zydeco collection. From Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural's own label, Tomorrow Recordings (set up for the January 1999 reissue of the album Trouble), The Buckwheat Zydeco Story, unlike most artists' best-of collections, contains material from several different labels. The previous greatest-hits collection, Menagerie, streamlined the band's somewhat uneven material recorded for Island Records but didn't touch on the much finer earlier recordings made for Rounder and Black Top. The Buckwheat Zydeco Story does, even including the song "Skip to My Blues" from the children's album Choo Choo Boogaloo. There's also Buckwheat's collaboration with Eric Clapton, a tantalizingly upbeat version of "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" And, for completists who probably have all this stuff already anyway, there's an added bonus: a live track from the 1998 Edmonton Folk Festival. This collection's also an excellent introduction to Buckwheat Zydeco's music, and the perfect CD to spin at your next backyard beer-and-barbecue event. --Genevieve Williams

The Buckwheat Zydeco Story: A 20-Year Party paints a nice portrait of Buckwheat Zydeco's rise from independent labels to stardom, following him from Turning Point, his first record for Rounder in 1983, to 1997's Trouble, the last record he cut for a major label. In the years separating those two albums, he recorded a wealth of great music, more than can fit on a 15-track collection, but The Buckwheat Zydeco Story is nevertheless a good, concise sampler that works as an excellent introduction for neophytes. Yes, longtime followers will probably have a few favorites missing, but they'll only need to turn here for the previously unreleased 1998 live recording of "Hey Baby," which is really good. Curious listeners, however, will find that this gives a nice feeling for the arc of Buckwheat Zydeco's career, and that it gives a good idea of where to turn to next -- whether that would be the early Rounder material or the Island albums that made him a near-household name. That makes the compilation a good introduction to Buckwheat, even if it may not be definitive. ~Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen, Paul Lamb and the King Snakes" the announcer introduces the band for an evening of traditional and rocking blues. More than that this is a simply outstanding concert recorded live at one of the truly iconic venues, and Paul and his band serve up as good a set of blues as you will ever hear. Their last album was a set of late night blues "After Hours", well received it was as well, but here in a large venue the full King Snakes show is to be heard, over eleven songs five of which are self written, the others some very well chosen covers that suit the band perfectly.

Paul Lamb over the last forty plus years has been one of the most respected, awarded and finest harmonica players in the world, and yet still he never stops moving forward and developing his music, one listen to this new set and if it doesn’t get an award for best true blues album it would be unfair. Over several tracks the interplay between Paul and his son Ryan is quite outstanding, and Ryan deserves recognition as a guitarist, absolutely rooted in the blues tradition and has brought an even greater depth to the band since he joined a few years ago now. Long time co-vocalist and rhythm guitarist Chad Strentz is still there, and remains one of the finest vocalists around but here he and Paul share the vocal duties. Add to these front three a rhythm section second to none, the rock on which any band depends on Rod Demick on bass guitar and drummer Dino Coccia. Well, that’s the line up, what about the album itself. Before we mention songs the production sound is superb, clear and so well balanced throughout.

The set opens with "Mr Lamb’s Groove Walk" a gentle opener with a laid back shuffle beat, up front Paul’s harmonica, alongside some seriously tasty guitar work by Ryan makes this instrumental the perfect choice to build the set on, before the pace is upped with a song Paul wrote many years ago about a young lady he once knew "Jumpin’ Little Judy" and with Chad taking over the vocal side. Next up one featuring in the main Paul and Ryan again "Let Me In". The version of the Sonny Boy Williamson "Ain’t It A Pity" sounds like a modern day Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry that feel works perfectly here, and once again featuring the father / son combination.

Paul introduces "Baby Please Don’t Go" with, This songs been done to death, so many have recorded it but she must have been pretty special for Big Boy Broonzy to write such a song about her. Rod and Dino really set a cracking groove here, and this is one time it’s good to hear it again, and just soak in that harmonica. Another down home blues in "Burnt Child", again lead in the main by Paul and Ryan. Before another instrumental from the pen of father and son, followed by "Woopin’ The Blues", another track to mainly feature Paul and Ryan, but for all this it’s a band album, this is also another instrumental track with woops and hollers along the way.

The set draws to a close with a pounding version of Don Nix’s ‘Tore Down’, Paul’s own reason for his music "Preaching The Blues". Things draw to a close with a stomping boogie, and "Come To A Conclusion" sung by Chad, and a great way to send your audience home happy.

Paul and his band still remain one of the best bands in world blues whether in Europe or the USA, and by any standards this is a truly stunning and enjoyable set by masters of their music. As a group the music is tight and blues in it’s a blues album at it’s finest. A great concert has made an equally great album.

Two months after Capitol's The Best of John Hiatt 1973-1998 hit the stores, A&M released Greatest Hits: The A&M Years '87-'94. It's hard to surmise what weird licensing agreements led to this release pattern, since the similarities will cause confusion even among dedicated fans, but there are notable differences between the two discs. Since Hiatt's albums for A&M in the late '80s were his creative peak, it's not surprising that Greatest Hits, which concentrates his A&M work, is a more consistent album than The Best of John Hiatt, which balances classic A&M cuts with two re-recorded songs, highlights from his two Capitol albums, and two new songs. Aside from the inexplicable omission of "Slow Turning" and one of his best rockers, Greatest Hits contains all the A&M songs that are on The Best of John Hiatt ("Thing Called Love," "Memphis in the Meantime," "Child of the Wild Blue Yonder," "Drive South," "Buffalo River Home," "Feels Like Rain," "Perfectly Good Guitar," "Tennessee Plates"), plus the original versions of "Drive South" and "Have a Little Faith in Me" (only available in butchered remakes on the Capitol disc), a live take of "Angel Eyes," and several fine numbers, such as "Thank You Girl," "Real Fine Love," "Paper Thin," "Lipstick Sunset," and "Through Your Hands." There are some excellent songs from Bring the Family and Slow Turning missing, but Greatest Hits remains the compilation to get for casual fans. ~Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Chicago blues man Johnny Dollar is a mass of contradictions. Those who have heard him play in joints like Lilly's in the Windy City know firsthand that his guitar playing is a thing of beauty, a tribute to the concept of total control. But those who know him have seen his edgy and impatient side. They have characterized him as kind and gallant and chivalrous, while at the same time recalling that Dollar has a roving eye for pretty ladies, and he also likes more than an occasional drink. So far, the description sounds perfect for someone who plays the blues. But in Dollar's case, the story gets even more blues worthy. The guitarist survived at least five gunshots, and he's got the belly and back scars to prove it, along with one shot to his head. He fought in Vietnam, where he escaped even minor injuries, and later worked the tough neighborhoods of his hometown, walking a police beat where they shot him. An injury that occurred toward the end of the 1970s cut short his law enforcement career. With that kind of history, the fact that he likes to nip the whiskey or kiss a pair of lipstick-red lips more than is good for him suddenly seems a little more understandable. And Dollar is good at putting all that history, and all that feeling, into his music. He can sing an audience into tasting the tang of the liquor or savoring the sweetness of that forbidden kiss.

He started out playing with Magic Sam in Chicago during the 1960s. Eight years of military service followed, with the blues man devoting himself to the Marines and serving two tours in Vietnam. The first time he joined the military, he was underage and enlisted by using his older brother's name. After three years, his lie was discovered and the Marines shipped him back to Chicago. When Dollar finally reached the legal age of 18, he returned to the military via the draft. When he left the service at the end of the decade and headed back to Chicago, the guitarist joined the Soundmasters, an outfit that played R&B with Dollar in the lead vocalist spot. He was the only member of the group who wasn't a sibling from the Fisher family. Besides Dollar, the Soundmasters' lineup consisted of Fisher brothers Thomas, Charles, Eddie, and Jim. The group's singles included "Your Love Has Got to Me." Dollar continued to play Chicago nightspots throughout the 1970s and into the following decade, and he also performed in Europe. Netto Rockfeller began his career as a guitarist in the year 1997, in the year of 1999 Netto Rockfeller creates the Blues the Ville together with David Tanganelli. Since then he has been dedicating his time to the Blues and its strands, such as Rhythm Blues, Swing and Rockabilly, being in recordings or productions of Shows of the genre.

Flávio Guimarães is a harmonica player, singer and Brazilian Blues pioneer. In his two decades lasting career, he has released 19 CDs - nine solo albums and ten as part of Brazil's premier Blues-Rock band "Blues Etílicos". Flávio has opened shows for B.B. King and Robert Cray. He has shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Charlie Musselwhite, Sugar Blue and Rick Estrin and the Nightcats among others. Besides as special guests in some of Flávio's albums Howard Levy, Charlie Musselwhite and Sugar Blue can be listed. In addition recordings of top Brazilian artists, television commercials and film and television soundtracks feature Flávio playing the harmonica. Guimarães is considered to be THE harmonica reference in Brazil - on the one hand due to his pioneering work with the blues diatonic harmonica, on the other hand due to his consistently evolving playing and the passing on of harmonica information. A whole generation of harmonica players was taught by Flávio, beginning the blues harp movement in Brazil.

Muddy, loose and full of confident energy, ‘House in the Woods’ is an album that’s full of foot stomping groove, infusing blues and rock aspects of greats such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix. The jamming nature of the music is accented by the traditional sound of the production. Although this album clearly leans to the blues and rock of the aforementioned influences, it really is an album that stands out on its own through a mixture of great song writing and musical craftsmanship.

Blues Divine certainly has what it takes on "That's What It Takes," a solid delivery of organic blues work. Guitar grooves embrace horn playing and soulful vocals for a lush sound. Passion runs through the veins of this music and such is a vital requirement for the execution of blues-based rock. These guys know the sound and they possess the kind of heart required to drive such a sound. I'm especially enamored of the horn section.
