Kenny Neal is among the most impressive of contemporary blues artists. Son of Baton Rouge legend Raful, he has been a progressive torch bearer of that city’s blues tradition and impresses by his uncrushed, at times lazy sounding musical style. Back in 2006 I purchased his tribute to Slim Harpo and his father. This has become a collector's item, but is available as downloads for those who can't afford what folks are asking for the actual CD.

One of the most versatile as well as skilled blues artists working today, Kenny Neal has just issued a new disc that goes to the roots of his music, A Tribute to Slim Harpo & Raful Neal (True Light Entertainment). Originally this was a Slim Harpo tribute by him and his father, the late Raful Neal. They recruited James Johnson and Rudolph Richard from Slim Harpo’s original band to participate in this. Ten Slim Harpo songs were recorded when Kenny went on tour and in the interim Raful was diagnosed with bone cancer so Kenny was among those looking after his dad who passed away September 1, 2004. Going back to the tapes he listened to the tapes and decided to release what was initially a tribute to Slim Harpo also as a tribute to his dad.

Kenny shares the vocals with his father, with the exception of What a Dream on which James Johnson sings while the band captures the understated, laconic grooves that made Harpo’s originals so classic. Raful opens the set with a nice vocal and some harp on Rainin’ in My Heart, while Kenny and Raful swap harp riffs on Swamp Boogie. Raful comes across very appealingly on King Bee, Scratch My Back and Got Love If You Want It, while the two share the vocals on Late Last Nite, with Kenny taking the vocal prior to the harp break which is followed by Raful singing and closing the song with his nicely played harp, and Te-Ni-Ne-Ni-Nu where Raful takes the lead with Kenny joining in on the chorus.

Its nice to hear this played in such a nice relaxed manner, lacking the frenzy or overstatement that mars some rock interpretations of this material. Kenny Neal and his late dad have put together a small gem of a disc, and if playing time is a little short, there is no frills or filler here. Highly recommended. ~Review by Ron W

The late, great John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd caught a lot of crap for their 1980 film The Blues Brothers, mostly because a few ignorant critics misunderstood the Saturday Night Live duos’ cinematic treatment of the blues and R&B as satire rather than as the reverent, heartfelt homage that the original BB skit and the resulting movie were meant to be.

Regardless of a few bad reviews, and studio concerns about its appeal to white audiences, The Blues Brothers would score $100+ box office worldwide, spawn an equally-misunderstood but probably unnecessary sequel, yield a couple of hit record albums, and introduce its (mostly white) audience to dynamic performances by great talents like Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, John Lee Hooker, and James Brown.

Flash forward a few decades and the two Blues Brothers movies have come to be considered as cult classics, resulting in a long-running radio program hosted by Aykroyd and a full-time touring band comprised of musicians from the movies. On October 6th, 2017 Severn Records will release The Last Shade of Blue Before Black, a new album by the Original Blues Brothers Band. Featuring bona fide rock ‘n’ blues legends like guitarist Steve Cropper and saxophonist “Blue Lou” Marini (both from the original film) as well as notable musical guests like R&B singer Eddie Floyd, guitarists Joe Louis Walker and Matt “Guitar” Murphy, keyboardists Paul Shaffer (an SNL alumni) and Dr. John as well as Blues Brothers 2000 star Joe Morton.

In a press release for the new album, “Blue Lou” Marini says, “Had anyone told me in 1978 that in 2017 I would still be traveling around the world and playing with the Blues Brothers’ Band, I would have said they were out of their minds. But, amazingly here we are with a new CD and still playing all over the world. This album is a true labor of love and I’m so proud of the organic way it came about. We really wanted to honor our history and to include some of our favorite musicians that we’ve worked with and loved over the years. We have the legends, Eddie Floyd and Dr. John, plus our original band leader, Paul Shaffer and the great bluesman Joe Louis Walker.”

The Last Shade of Blue Before Black was produced by Marini, Cropper, and the Original Blues Brothers Band and recorded by Jay Messina at IQII Studios in Hoboken, NJ. The album’s track list is a heady collection of original material and cover songs by such roots ‘n’ blues artists as Delbert McClinton, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Eddie Floyd, and James Brown. “We wanted to present some new original material and do some tunes that hearkened to our past,” says Marini. “This is a live CD, with everyone recording at once, mostly first or second takes and live vocals and solos. The only overdubs were some baritone sax parts and a few minor fixes.”

Concluding, Marini states “I’ve often said that the OBBB is the world’s greatest part-time job because of you, our fans. We’ve gotten to see the world and enjoy it in your company. We’ve eaten and drank with you, especially the latter, and you have treated us like kings. Enjoy this music and for God’s sake, PLAY IT LOUD!”

For his previous album, ‘Released‘, Snowy spent two years working mainly on his own in his home studio; this time around however, he recorded the bulk of the tracks with his tried and trusted pals Kuma Harada (bass), Max Middleton (keys), Juan van Emmerloot, Richard Bailey (both drums) and Walter Latupeirissa (bass). The album runs from the bluesier end to rock and even a tight Latin workout. Whatever the tempo and the groove, Snowy’s distinctive, soulful guitar runs like a golden thread throughout the album, connecting all together and making for a satisfyingand very listenable offering.

In Snowy’s own words: “When I play music with friends that I respect and admire, both as players and as people, either doing live shows or in a recording environment, I feel that I’m exactly where I want to be. I feel at home. It’s been a year or two since I last got together with the musicians who appear on this new album, called, for obvious reasons, ‘Reunited’. We had a great time working together again and I’m very happy with the way they interpreted my ideas, helping me evolve the songs from the simple outlines that I took into the studio into complete pieces of music. So I would like to thank my friends Kuma, Max, Walter, Juan and Richard for adding their good vibes to the sessions. I feel very honoured that my music was transformed and improved by these fine musicians, and I consider myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with them once again. Because of them, recording ‘Reunited’ was a lot of fun and has created yet another store of good memories, and, for me, that’s what it’s all about. Music and musicians evolve and change over time, so this album is just snapshot of how it was at that moment in Snowy’s career. Tracks like ‘Have I Got Blues For You’, ‘Headful Of Blues’ and ‘Emptyhanded’ cover the bluesier side of things, whereas ‘Where Will You Belong’ and ‘In California’ are more reflective. ‘Nuff Said’ and ‘I Know Our Time Ain’t Long’ are examples of the more up-tempo and rockier Snowy White. There’s something for everybody, from the weird ‘Long Time No C’ to the tight latin groove of ‘Heard It All Before’. Whatever the tempo and the groove, Snowy’s distinctive soulful guitar runs like a golden thread throughout the album.

One of the most appreciated attributes of a great artist is their ability to take a song that is already considered a classic in its original form, and successfully take it even further. While some avoid covering artists of legendary status, Brian Owens is tackling it head on in his forthcoming project, “Soul of Cash,” covering selected pages from the songbook of the late great Johnny Cash. If the project’s lead single, “Ring of Fire” is any indication, Owens may have an instant classic on his hands.

It is not surprising to hear that Owens lists Cash as one of his influences after just a few seconds of “Fire.” What makes this performance transcend eras is the stripped down arrangement guided by the signature guitar melody. Owens successfully keeps the legacy of the original track, yet creates a lovely fusion of St. Louis Blues, Memphis Soul, and Nashville Country. All of this occurs even before we get to Owens’ vocal performance, which is simply put, one of the most honest and soulful voices to come down the line in recent memory. His ability to vocally paint a picture behind such a clever lyric, adds to the greatness of this cover.

There is truly so much to enjoy about this track, as each new listen will bring about something new to appreciate. From the horn section strides to the background vocals echoing sessions at Stax, Brian Owens will have you on Fire after taking on this modern twist of an iconic musical statement.

Who the hell is Eli Cook, and why haven’t I come across him before? The 31-year-old from Virginia has released six albums before High Dollar Gospel, fer chrissake, and if this is anything to go by his earlier efforts also deserve examination. If Jimmy Page had said to Paul Rodgers when they got together to form The Firm that they were going to make an acoustic blues album in the manner of “Hats Off To (Roy) Harper,” it might have sounded like this. Maybe.

Cook majors on playing resonator and 12-string acoustic guitar, though photographs suggest he’s also ready to strap on an electric guitar when the fancy takes him. He’s also possessed of a versatile blues voice, manifesting itself as a hoarse rasp on the swinging, upbeat opener “Trouble Maker” and the following “The Devil Finds Work,” which progresses from a slow opening to rattle along in a style that hints at North Mississippi Allstars.

But Cook then shifts gear into a run of slower, atmospheric songs, kicking off with “Mixing My Medicine” on which restrained, picked guitar lines are backed by sparse, shimmering, effects-laden electrified chords and background humming, while Cook contributes a smoky vocal that brings to mind the late Jimmy Dewar. He repeats that vocal tone on the following “Pray For Rain,” where some clear-toned electric licks towards the end also suggest a Robin Trower influence.

The middle of the album shows more variety, including the lullaby-like “Mother’s Prayer,” which features spangly guitar and a deeper, vocal, and a reflective reading of the old blues standard “44 Blues.” Contrastingly the laid back “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight” has a lilting feel and emotional warmth that recalls Steve Earle. Then to close, “Month Of Sundays” and “If Not For You” evoke the British bluesman Ian Siegal, especially the latter with its pinging chords and clever melody.

High Dollar Gospel may not be perfect – it could do with another uptempo number to give it better balance, and as good as Cook’s acoustic guitar is on “44 Blues” it pales in comparison with the classic Howlin’ Wolf version. But this is as modern and refreshing a take on acoustic country blues as you could hope for, and compelling with it. The Review: 8/10 ~by Iain Cameron

Q & THE MOONSTONES is the Seville-based band of Spanish guitarist Quique Bonal. Although he is mainly known for his work in the field of the blues as member of some of the most renowned blues bands in Spain (Caledonia Blues Band, Blues Blasters, Mingo & the Blues Intruders), he is also a skilled jazz and rock & roll guitarist. Singer Vicky Luna (O’Funkillo, Las Niñas, Chez Luna) is the jazzy and talented front-woman of the band and ex-member of the successful all-female band Las Niñas. Both she and Quique have been playing together as a duo for a couple of years, going through many of the musical styles developed in the US during the 20th century. Alongside them, a powerful but exquisite rhythm section: Jose Mena (drums) and Nani Conde (bass), two professional musicians who endow the band with its trademark swing and groove.

With a solid blues foundation, Q & THE MOONSTONES present a mixture of their own compositions and classics, embracing such styles as R&B, Soul, Jazz, Swing and Rock & Roll.

Alabama-raised Nashville-based singer-songwriter Johnny Hayes weaves soulful blues-rock vocals through a musical fabric of acoustic, folk and pop.

His creations cross genres and are laced with straightforward lyrics and blanketed with a canvas of influences from R&B legends and rock music greats.

From blue-collar upbringings, Hayes balanced his teenage life on the stage and on the field. He was both a picturesque all-American athlete and a star in the school choir.

While attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Hayes' musical interest
resurged full-force as he honed his guitar skills in local bars. Although he hadn't played since early childhood, he quickly picked it back up. During this time Hayes also released his first project, an EP he recorded in a buddy's apartment.

Hayes packed up and headed for Music City at 23, “I only knew one person in Nashville, but I thought, 'If I don't go now, I'll never go',” he said. What began with Hayes busking outside of busy Broadway honkytonks, quickly evolved into performing in some of the most well-respected venues in Nashville while working on assorted projects.

Hayes released the emotionally charged 4-song EP, “Notes For Her,” in 2012.
Meanwhile, he began collaborating with Irish singer-songwriter Kurtis Murphy and the alt-folk, Lumineers-esque duo Folks and Ghosts was born. They released a debut track, “Ghosts,” in 2013, which charted at No. 9 on the Ireland iTunes Singer-Songwriter chart and in the Top 250 on the equivalent U.S. iTunes chart.

In 2013, Hayes released the song “Roll Home, Baby” from his forthcoming full-album release which features Lynyrd Skynyrd's lead guitarist Mark “Sparky” Matejka on both the track and in the music video.

Critically acclaimed and award winning Ida Bang & The Blue Tears is a young retro/roots band from Stockholm, which has been called “the rising stars of blues” in Scandinavia.

Ida Bang & The Blue Tears have received several rave reviews of both live shows and their album in some of Sweden’s largest newspapers, including Dagens Nyheter, Sydsvenskan, Barometern and Jefferson Blues Magazine. They are often described as a much needed new and innovative retro/roots band with talented musicians and a unique sound that still maintains a great respect for the roots of blues.
In 2016 they represented Sweden in the European Blues Challenge held in Italy, after winning the Swedish qualifying round. Their show was a success and became the competition’s big ”talking point”, paving the way for more touring beyond Sweden’s borders. In the summer of 2016 the band also released their first full-length album, Possibilities, containing 11 original songs that show the band’s range. Since the band was formed in 2013, they have become an appreciated live band that has appeared in Sweden’s major blues festivals and clubs.

25-year-old singer and songwriter Ida Bang sings with much feeling and intensity, as there is power and authority behind. She has done a lot for the new, more modern blues in Sweden by forming Ladies Got The Blues – an all female tribute band to women in blues, which also has taken Sweden by storm. She has also been working as a club organizer at Stockholm’s legendary jazz club Fasching.
The Blue Tears consists of four talented and experienced musicians: John Bernström and Leo Henriksson on guitar, Patrik Engström on bass and Leo Sund on drums. Artists like Bonnie Raitt and Tedeschi Trucks Band have influenced their songs, while the sound can be compared to The Black Keys and Alabama Shakes.

Just a few weeks ago, there was but a distant thought, tapping on the creative mind of Mr Ash Grunwald. It was a quiet idea but it was persistent. It softly projected the notion that somehow, maybe, two thirds of The Living End could be his band on more than just a single…the planets aligning perhaps so together they could bash out a full albums worth of tracks.

The formerly polite idea began to shout, on a Friday morning not that long ago, after Ash found himself in the somewhat unexpected position of performing live on Triple M Breakfast in Melbourne. He’d recently released his, Scott and Andy’s ripping cover of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ which was meant to serve as a beacon for Ash’s community; alerting them of the upcoming national tour that the lads are soon to embark on but ‘Crazy’ had a different direction. Developing a life well beyond the borders of a loyal fanbase, ‘Crazy’ made it’s way out into commercial radio land, and took Ash with it. So as the snowball rolled, so did the idea and that very afternoon Ash found his way to St Kilda’s Hothouse Studios with the lads from The Living End and amped up for a few hours of sonic exploration. Those hours turned into 6 straight days of recording that ended with an immense sense of excitement and an idea realized. With the encouragement and enthusiasm of Scott Owen and Andy Strachan, Ash Grunwald’s rock monster was welcomingly unleashed and GARGANTUA was born.

Comprised of two new and original tracks (involving CSG, Arnie and a fuck you attitude), three vastly different cover songs and a handful of utterly off the hook reworkings of some of Ash’s biggest tracks, this album documents the findings of an unplanned experiment in altered methodology.

Tom McGuinness was the last original member of the classic Manfred Mann lineup to join the group, replacing bassist Dave Richmond, who had played on the group's first three singles (including the hit "5-4-3-2-1"), on December 21, 1963. He remained with the group -- although he shifted over back to his preferred instrument, the guitar, late in 1965 -- until its dissolution in 1969, but has since enjoyed 30 years of work in the music business as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader.

McGuinness originally picked up a guitar at age 14 in the wake of the skiffle boom started by Lonnie Donegan, although he also found inspiration in the direction of rock & roll from Buddy Holly, whose bespectacled presence proved to the like-visaged McGuinness -- as it did to a young John Lennon -- that one could wear glasses and be a rock & roll star. McGuinness began playing R&B in the early '60s, and passed through bands such as the Talismen and the Ravens (not the formative Kinks band of that name), and also founded a group called the Roosters, whose lineup briefly featured Eric Clapton and future Rolling Stone Brian Jones, as well as singer Paul Jones.

The Roosters broke up in mid-1963, and in mid-December, McGuinness followed his bandmate Paul Jones' lead by joining Manfred Mann, who already had a recording contract and were about to have their first hit. He spent the next seven years playing bass and then guitar on a string of chart-topping singles, EPs, and albums, and writing the occasional song. In 1969, when the final incarnation of Manfred Mann broke up, McGuinness joined ex-John Mayall's Bluesbreakers drummer Hughie Flint to form McGuinness Flint, which charted two major British hits, "When I'm Dead and Gone" and "Malt and Barley Blues" and, with the addition of Dennis Coulson and Dixie Dean, also cut a brilliant album of Bob Dylan covers called Lo and Behold in 1972. In the late '70s, McGuinness joined fellow Manfred Mann alumnus Paul Jones in a group called the Blues Band, which included Hughie Flint and veteran British bluesman Dave Kelly in its lineup, and which recorded a pair of albums.

After a stint in music-related television production, and authoring a book (So You Want to Be a Rock 'n Roll Star?), and more work with the Blues Band, McGuinness hooked up with Jones and his Manfred Mann successor Mike D'Abo, and fellow band alumni Mike Hugg and Mike Vickers in a group called the Manfreds. Darrell Nulisch was born in Dallas, TX, in 1952. He grew up on soul singers like Otis Redding and Al Green, inspiring him to take up a similar path and work on his voice. He was a founding member of Anson Funderburgh's Rockets and sang with that group in the '80s, when he also did time in groups like Ronnie Earl's Broadcasters. He eventually left Texas and started a solo career in 1991, relocating to Boston and releasing albums that showcased his incredible blues-harmonica skills and his passionate voice. Even legendary soul singer James Cotton asked Nulisch to work with his touring band when he lost his voice, giving Nulisch a chance to work with someone he admired. He continued his solo efforts into the next century, releasing the critically acclaimed I Like It That Way in the spring of 2000. ~by Bradley Torreano.

On Stompin’ Ground, Castro, a native of San Jose, CA, opens windows both into his past and his always-evolving musical future. Produced by Castro and guitar wunderkind Kid Andersen and recorded at Andersen’s soon-to-be legendary Greaseland Studio in San Jose, Stompin’ Ground finds Castro letting loose on a set of 12 tracks featuring six originals and new versions of songs he learned and played as a young up-and-comer. He is simultaneously looking back with autobiographical originals and cover songs that inspired him, while forging a forward trail with modern lyrics atop blistering blues-rock.

In addition to the The Painkillers, Castro’s friends Charlie Musselwhite (harp and vocals on Live Every Day), Mike Zito (guitar and vocals on Rock Bottom), Danielle Nicole (vocals on Soul Shake) and Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo (guitar and vocals on Them Changes) add their talents to Stompin’ Ground. “I heard each one of my friends’ contributions on these songs in my head as I was working on them. Happily, when I reached out and actually asked, everyone said yes.”

Castro’s musical roots run deep. As he unleashes his high-energy music to fans all over the world, he is inspired by the sounds he absorbed while coming of age on the rough and tumble side of San Jose, California. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, this was Castro’s home turf – his stomping ground. It was a place where the street-tough Mexican Americans and the counter-culture hippies came together to drink, smoke, laugh, party and listen to tunes – the hippies with their blues and rock, the Mexicans with their soul music. Mixing the blues-rock he loved and the soul music he heard blasting out from the lowriders cruising the streets, along with the socially conscious message songs of the day, Tommy’s own sound was born. He honed his guitar playing to a razor’s edge on the city’s competitive bar scene, where he learned how to capture an audience with his intensely passionate vocals, stellar musicianship and dynamic performances. Almost every major rock and soul act, from Ike & Tina Turner to Janis Joplin to Elvin Bishop and Taj Mahal toured through the area, and Castro was at almost every show. He saw John Lee Hooker, Albert King and Buddy Guy & Junior Wells at the same local blues bar, JJ’s, where he often jammed, dreaming of one day busting out.

Castro began playing in a variety of Bay Area blues and soul bands in his early 20s. He joined Warner Brothers’ artists The Dynatones in the late 1980s, gigging all over the country. After forming the first Tommy Castro Band in 1991, Castro released a series of critically acclaimed CDs for Blind Pig, Telarc and 33rd Street Records, as well as one on his own Heart And Soul label. He signed with Alligator Records in 2009, releasing Hard Believer to massive acclaim. He won four of his six career Blues Music Awards including the coveted B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year Award (the very highest award a blues performer can receive). His relentless road-dog approach—gig after gig, night after night—has won him loyal, lifelong fans everywhere he plays. The Washington Post says Castro is “phenomenal and funky” with “soulful vocals and inspired blues-rock guitar.”

In 2012 Castro formed The Painkillers, creating a lean, mean four-piece lineup, capable of delivering soul-shaking, muscular music. The band released The Devil You Know in 2014 and Method To My Madness in 2015, with critics shouting praise and admirers cheering his every move. Castro had stripped his music down to its raw essence with the new, smaller band, sounding bigger than ever. For the very first time, Rockstar has now released the two complete sets by Darrel Higham and The Enforcers, which were recorded on the 5th December 2002. On this occasion Imelda May (Mrs Higham) was the special guest and sung a very provocative version of Dharma Blues Band's 'Dealing With The Devil'. Imelda was, at that time, lead singer with the Blue Harlem Band. Darrel's performances mainly consists of rock 'n' roll classics with emphasis on his heroes such as Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and Elvis Presley. A limited edition of Darrel's Thunderbird show was issued in 2004 by Rockstar which was edited down for a single CD due to the length of the original recordings of over 110 minutes. Now you have the complete show (2 sets) with various previous unreleased material by Darrel who is backed by two of rock 'n' roll's best musicians, Mick Wigfell on upright bass and Rob Tyler on drums, The Enforcers. The twelve page booklet features some previously unseen photos of the show which were taken by Steve Aynsley who has also revised the booklet notes. On the 23rd August 1998 Rockstar Records arranged for rockabilly legend Ray Campi to be professionally recorded for CD release at the now legendary Thunderbird Rock 'n' Roll Venue in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Darrel Higham was Ray's special guest and backed up by him on upright bass. We have included Darrel's performance from Ray's show as bonus tracks on this new double CD release.

Featuring l-2 new originals, including two co-writes with award-winning Americana songwriter Dale Boyle, and the forgotten John Prine gem Rocky Mountain Time, the album digs deep into the roots of Canadian and American music and delivers another strong statement. "This album, of all of them, was a journey into the unknown, which is why I like the title so much," Lutes says. Born in 1968, in Londrina-PR and began to play in 1984, in Londrina-PR, his hometown with friends in school and his influences was Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, SRV, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and Rolling Stones. He shared the stage with major names of Brazilian Blues scene like Alamo Leal, Decio Caetano, Igor Prado, Cristiano Crochemore, Flavio Guimarães, Otavio Rocha, Fernando Noronha, and Decio Caetano and some international artists like Mud Morganfield, Omar Coleman, Bex Marshall, Lurrie Bell and Gonzalo Araya.

Darrell Nulisch was born in Dallas, TX, in 1952. He grew up on soul singers like Otis Redding and Al Green, inspiring him to take up a similar path and work on his voice. He was a founding member of Anson Funderburgh's Rockets and sang with that group in the '80s, when he also did time in groups like Ronnie Earl's Broadcasters. He eventually left Texas and started a solo career in 1991, relocating to Boston and releasing albums that showcased his incredible blues-harmonica skills and his passionate voice. Even legendary soul singer James Cotton asked Nulisch to work with his touring band when he lost his voice, giving Nulisch a chance to work with someone he admired. He continued his solo efforts into the next century, releasing the critically acclaimed I Like It That Way in the spring of 2000.
