Blues Brothers and Friends: Live from Chicago's House of Blues is the eleventh album and fourth live album by The Blues Brothers in 1997. It was recorded at the opening of the House of Blues in Chicago and is the first recording to feature Zee Blues. It is also the first album to feature original keyboardist Paul Shaffer since their earlier live recording Made in America in 1980.

A number of prominent guests joined the band on stage, including Joe Walsh, Billy Boy Arnold, Charlie Musselwhite, Jeff Baxter and Sam Moore. This is also the first album to feature Tommy "Pipes" McDonnell, who had replaced Larry Thurston as lead vocalist. /Wikipedia

One magical night many years ago, at the General Store in Stone City, Iowa, I sat hypnotized by the foot-stomping groove laid down by the baby-faced boy with the big voice and wild eyes. Keith's guitar work was already impressive then, but over the past 20 years he has grown into one of the most exciting guitarists in any genre. "Every time I go on stage, I feel like a tightrope walker, 'cause I do tend to play close to the edge," Keith says. "I like the view better out there."

His sixth recording, Twist It, Babe!, featuring Keith on guitars, vocals and feet, and Marty Christensen on acoustic bass, has just been released on Fish Tail Records. Considering that two of his first five recordings were nominated for the W. C. Handy Award for Best Acoustic Blues Album and that all five have reached No. 1 on independent radio station playlists, this is something to get excited about. Twist It, Babe! was released in America just days before a two-month-long European tour, his 14th since 1992.

All the songs on this recording are traditional, songs that Keith says he fell in love with 20 years ago and has been playing ever since. He describes this collection as "an American treasure trove of the deepest diamonds in the rough." Keith's great love and delight in this music make Twist It, Babe! completely irresistible. "I was voracious as a youngster," he recalls, "playing and learning entire repertoires of country blues, jazz, gospel, and island music. I'd listen to a song till it was preying on my mind, and then I would commence to make my own arrangement. So these songs aren't covers so much as re-creations."

The Reverend spent 15 years serving in the Navy where one of his duties was to counsel sailors who found themselves in hot water. His charges gave him the nickname Reverend and it stuck. The Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys sounds like it was a natural addition, especially once you hear the hot blues these guys serve up!

The band began in 1996 and this is their fourth CD. The music on this CD is excellent, well played and recorded, with variety but most importantly a fair degree of excitement. The core of the band is Reverend Raven on guitar and vocals, PT Pedersen on bass, Bobby Lee Sellers on drums (and vocals on two cuts) and Big Al Groth on sax. Madison Slim provides harp and vocals on four tracks, where an alternative rhythm section of Andre Maritato on bass and Spencer Panosh on drums sit in and the sax is absent. Piano and organ are provided by either Mickey Larson or Danny Moore on most tracks. Reverend Raven wrote three of the songs, with the sole instrumental being from the pen of the bass player. Gerry Hundt, former member of Nick Moss’ Fliptops is the author of two tracks and covers come from Hound Dog Taylor, Slim Harpo, Little Milton, St Louis Jimmy Oden, Robert Nighthawk and Sonny Boy Williamson. The album was recorded live on stage in Milwaukee, but from the absence of any crowd noise I assume that it was ‘live’ without an audience. ~John Mitchell

The debut CD by Pacific Northwest singer, songwriter, producer, and guitarist Dean Reichert is a strong fusion of R&B, Blues, Rock, Funk, and Soul. When asked the question "who does this guy sound like?" You can come up with a lot of "I hear a little's". I hear a little Delbert, I hear a little early Steely Dan, and I hear a little Tower of Power. But what I really hear is an artist who has taken the last 20 years of his musical influences, and fused them into a style that is original, and fresh. That's not an easy thing to do these days.

Honing his musical skills through the 70's, and 80's in Portland OR, Dean landed the guitar chair with Jazz fusion great Jeff Lorber and played on Jeff's second album "Soft Space". "Seeing my name on the same album cover as Jeff Lorber, Chick Corea, and Joe Farrell was a total mind blower." Dean also spent a lot of time in the club circuit in and around the Portland area. After spending a couple of years living on the road in the late 80's, Dean moved back to the Portland area and stumbled right into the middle of a thriving Blues scene. Dean jumped in with both feet and ended up as musical director for the award winning Margo Tufo Blues Band. Not long afterwards, Dean moved to Seattle and again found his way into the top local bands surrounded by A+ players. Dean spent 2 years with LJ Porter and another year with Korla Wygal among others besides having several bands of his own in the Seattle area. Dean has also been on stage and in the studio with: Larry Correll, Nokie Edwards, Jerry Miller, Tim "Too Slim" Langford, "Little Bill" Engelhart, Kenny G, Tom Grant, DK Stewart, The Wailers, Seattle Women, The Blues Power Revue, Butterbean, and Grammy Nominated Kathy Hart.

Toward the late 90's Dean got the urge to write and record again so he built a small home studio and got busy working on a Smooth Jazz project but was again drawn back to the blues and decided to do something more "R&Bish", hence the start of Misty's Joint. During this time Dean recorded, produced, and co-produced 3 CD's for other local artists. One of them, Mark Riley's "Confessions of a Mad Man" was nominated "Best Blues CD" of 2003 by the Washington Blues Society. Though side tracked by these projects, he continued work on Misty's Joint and ended up enlisting the services of former Capital Records, and Steve "Fly Like an Eagle" Miller engineer, producer Rick Fisher to do the mix down and mastering. The results were outstanding.

"The Blues And I Should Have A Party’ is as much a thematic statement of the band’s musical intent – let alone history – as it is a specific title track about a troubled relationship.

Thus: “The blues & I’ve been friends for so long, We might as well start a party.”

There’s an undoubted whiff of irony too, because for all the despondency that the blues might bring, it’s equally a catalyst for some good-time music. And it’s very much the latter interpretation that holds court on a generous 13 track album that makes a real statement about the band’s musical ability.

Zoe Schwarz Blue Commotion revel in the flow of ‘Way Down In The Caves’ and impressively explore the deeply entrenched ‘You’ve Changed’. They enjoy some superb band interplay on ‘You Don’t Live Here Anymore’ and lean into the pleasing groove of ‘My Handsome Man’.

Rob Koral’s arrangements are the cornerstone of an album that stretches the contemporary blues palette to the limit. They get the best out of a road tested band and give the set its essential vitality.

Blue Commotion is the impenetrable sum of its parts, as each musician contributes fully to their signature sound, dominated by Zoe’s impassioned phrasing.

There’s a mix of relationship songs, straight blues, and a brace of emotive outings that dig a little a bit deeper lyrically.

‘You’ve Changed’ for example, gives Zoe plenty of room to wrap her expansive blues phrasing round the lyrics: “Something’s missing from your smile, Now it seems you can beguile, What was our special place, Is now an empty space.”

Similarly, Zoe immerses herself in a lament for her late mum called ‘The Memory of You’. In truth, it might have been something of a sprawl, were it not for her focussed and emotive performance which serves the song well.

It also gives the following ‘Time Waits For No One’, an extra impact. Rob Koral again proves to be the master arranger, on a spacious effort which has a perfectly weighted slow-build that leads into a two line lyrical resolution: “Nothing’s ticking but the clock on the wall, Time movin’ forward, can you feel the pull?”

The meaning of the lyrics are also superbly evoked by the band’s eloquent playing.

Blue Commotion take us on an energetic musical journey, underscored by some coherent sequencing. There’s a lovely balance routed in a layered sound. It’s counterweighted by a collective drive and topped by crisp solos that never overstay their welcome. This is best exemplified by the title track, which mirrors a confident road tested combo that likes to explore every possibility in a song

Keyboard player Pete Whittaker’s Hammond glues everything together in such a way that you don’t notice the absence of a bass player, especially on a seamless groove like ‘My Handsome Man’.

Perhaps an accentuated bass line might draw the listener in a shade more, but for the most part, a combination of effervescent drummer Paul Robinson and Koral’s ability to switch from peerless rhythm into expressive solos, means the band bring a hefty presence to bear on well chosen material.

Keyboard player Whittaker further stars on the lovely retro sounding shuffle ‘Tell Me You Love Me Too’, which recalls the younger Steve Winwood in The Spencer Davis Group.

And while Zoe Schwarz’s clear diction helps brings alive the lyrics, the album also benefits from a bright sonic quality that helps capture the band’s spark, energy and drive.

Listen for example to the funky relaxed groove of the closing ‘Thank You’. The guitar and organ meld together mellifluously either side of Robinson’s tom-tom fill, on a track on which the band refreshingly shows its appreciation for its audience.

If ‘The Blues And I Should Have A Party’ doesn’t quite have the immediacy of its predecessor ‘This Is the Life I Choose’, it is certainly more adventurous as it delivers dynamic vocals, deep grooves and fiery solos on meaningful songs.

It would be easy to call Blue Commotion ‘player’s players’, but that would be to overlook both their originality and an adventurous spirit that gives them every right to be regarded as being in the vanguard of contemporary blues. **** ~by Pete Feenstra

Nine Below Zero started life in South London during 1977, in the midst of the punk rock boom in England -- but their sound and inspiration were so totally counterintuitive to what was going on in punk rock that they scarcely seemed to be part of that movement, apart from their extremely energetic attack on their instruments. Rather than noise for its own sake or auto-destruction, their inspiration lay in classic Chicago blues (though John Mayall's early music and that of the Who and the Kinks from early in their careers also figured into their sound). Dennis Greaves (lead vocals, guitar), Peter Clark (bass), and Kenny Bradley (drums) -- soon joined by Mark Feltham (who actually replaced a teacher of theirs who had sat in on the early gigs) on vocals and harmonica -- were schoolmates and friends who shared a love of blues; all had all come into the world in the early '60s, and might well have resigned themselves to having missed the boat for the British blues revival by virtue of having been born in the midst of it. Instead, they reached back to that era and found themselves pegged as part of the "mod revival" in the midst of the punk era.

Originally billed as Stan's Blues Band, they made a name for themselves locally in South London, sounding a lot like the Who from their "maximum R&B" days and the Kinks from their early days, and arrived as younger rivals to Dr. Feelgood. A couple of years later, they acquired a manager and a new name, taken from a song by Sonny Boy Williamson II, and cut a debut record on their own label. By 1980, they'd been signed to A&M Records' British division and took the bold step of making their major-label debut a live album from the Marquee Club in London -- to judge from the results, one heartily wished that some of the earlier bands that inspired them had displayed similar daring. Live at the Marquee, recorded on June 16, 1980 -- by which time Stix Burkey had replaced Bradley on the drums -- was a success and led to their follow-up album. For their sophomore effort, Don't Point Your Finger, they were determined to translate their live energy into the studio and turned to no less a producer than Glyn Johns, who had worked with the Rolling Stones and the Who in their respective best years. The resulting record reached number 56 on the British charts.

The band's upward momentum was slowed in the years that followed, with Clark's departure (replaced by Brian Berhall), though a third album, Third Degree, followed -- but it seemed as though the moment had passed, as that record never got the attention or recognition it deserved from the press or the public. Greaves' involvement with an outfit called the Truth, who coalesced as a full-time band in 1984, seemed to bring an end to Nine Below Zero, and that might have been as far as the group got. But a 1990 reunion got them playing before sell-out audiences, and the group has been working ever since, with Greaves on lead guitar and Mark Feltham even returning to the fold in 2001. ~ Bruce Eder

Teresa and the band have a Rootsy, Texas Roadhouse soul that goes between Texas blues and rocking Southern roots. Teresa James was born and raised in Houston, Texas where she was introduced to music at an early age by her father and grandfather, both guitar players in the old tradition. She starting playing piano at 5 and hasn’t stopped since.
Called a singer’s singer by many. (When the SAG Singer’s Committee got together to honor composer Randy Newman, Teresa was chosen as the soloist to perform his favorite song to him.) This album marks Sue Foley’s return to her solo career. It is her eleventh studio album and first for Canada’s Stony Plain Records. A native Canadian Foley has nicknamed herself “The Ice Queen”. Foley first appeared on a 1992 compilation called “Antone’s Women”, featuring women that played the famous Austin night club; recorded while she was still a student at The University of Texas. That same year Foley released her full length debut “Young Girl Blues” also on the Antones label.

Foley has also recorded for the Warner Music, Koch, New West, Shanachie, Ruf and Blind Pig labels. In 2001 Foley won a Juno award, Canada’s equivalent of our Grammies. She has also earned seventeen Maple Blues Awards. An accomplished guitarist Foley’s last studio recording as a solo artist was 2007’s “Time Bomb” a collaboration with Deborah Coleman and Roxanne Potvin. While in a duo with Peter Karp, Foley received a 2011 Blues Music Award nomination for “Traditional Blues Female Artist of The Year” a.k.a. The Koko Taylor Award.

Foley returns to her Texas stomping grounds to record at The Firestation Studios in San Marcos, part of the greater Austin metropolitan area. The album is produced by organist Mike Flanigin who is also a member of The Jimmie Vaughan Trio, and of Billy Gibbons and The BFG’s. Included are Foley guitar and vocals; fellow guitarists Vaughan, Gibbons, Derek O’Brien, and Charlie Sexton; bassists Chris Maresh, Billy Horton and Johnny Bradley; drummers Chris Layton, George Rains and JJ Johnson; and The Texas Horns including Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff, Al Gomez, John Mills, Jimmy Shortell and Randy Zimmerman. These are Austin’s best.

Foley has written or co-written ten of the twelve tracks. The opener features Sexton playing slide on the swampy “Come To Me” with its Bo Diddley beat. “The Lucky Ones” is a vocal and guitar duet with Vaughan. “Fool’s Gold” is another duet featuring Gibbons’ vocal and harmonica. The title track has a John Lee Hooker vibe.

Flanigin plays organ on half the tracks including the Bobby “Blue” Bland styled “If I Have Forsaken You” featuring the Texas Horns; and on “Gaslight” featuring a different horn section including two more of Austin’s finest; Ephram Owens, trumpet, and Elias Haslander, tenor sax. “The Dance” is a flamenco flavored tune.

Foley also includes two fabulous covers that are sure to garner a lot of airplay; Bessie Smith’s “Send Me to The ‘Lectric Chair” and A.P. Carter’s “Cannonball Blues”.

Foley is a triple threat as she is songwriter, guitarist and vocalist. “The Ice Queen” is the finest Canadian blues act working today. ~Richard Ludmerer

Some black separatists will tell you that white musicians are incapable of playing the blues convincingly - that they don't have it in them to play genuinely gritty blues. But that silly and racist myth is exploded by the Backtrack Blues Band, a white blues-rock unit whose influences include Louisiana swamp blues, Chicago blues and the innovations of John Lee Hooker. A few of the tunes on Killin' Time are unremarkable, but most of the time, these guys are as confident as they are infectious.

Backtrack isn't afraid to play dirty and lowdown, and that lack of slickness works to the Florida quintet's advantage on smokers like "Come On to Me Mama," "Cruisin' for a Bluesin' " and "Babe Oh Babe." Backtrack throws us a curveball with "Don't Need Nobody," a 1970s-type funk tune along the lines of Tower of Power. When thinking of the blues artists who recorded in the pre-war era of the 1920’s and 30s and then remained active from the 1940s onwards, there is a tendency to think of those names which became part of the popular blues revival of the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s. These included Bukka White, Son House, Skip James, Furry Lewis and Sleepy John Estes all of whom had been “rediscovered” and brought out of obscurity by researchers, fans and enthusiasts of the music. Some, such as Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Lonnie Johnson, Roosevelt Sykes and the Reverend Gary Davis had never really gone away, remaining commercially active one way or another, either by playing in clubs, on the streets or on the small, emerging, folk music club and concert circuit.

Astonishingly, one name that eluded the concert, festival and tour organisers and music agents at the time was that of Jesse “Babyface Thomas. Though not one of the most prolific recording artists he made some fine recordings both in the pre and post war period. He was a fine, Louisiana blues musician who’s pedigree included his brother Willard “Ramblin’” Thomas, who made some exceptional blues recordings in the late 1920s, and his nephew Lafayette “The Thing” Thomas who appeared on many recordings both as a session man and under his own name between 1948 and the early 1970s. It is all the more surprising that Jesse, by and large, slipped through the net of the blues revival both in the U.S. and Europe because he was only in his forties and active as a semi-professional musician at that time.

For the first time in thirty seven years Jesse Thomas, along with his music companion of at least twenty five years, arrived at the Nightwing Studios on Fairy Avenue, Shreveport. Jesse brought with him his acoustic guitar, a piano awaited “Peaches” in the studio. Monty enlisted the expertise of record producer / engineer and musician Ron Capone as the sound engineer for sessions. In the very capable hands of Ron the two veteran musicians settled do to record. As Monty Brown explained “It was fairly early days of digital recording, so instead of using expensive 2-inch tape, we used a Sony digital processor and videocassettes. This allowed us to set Jesse and “Peaches” up in the studio, turn on the recorder and let it roll. I wanted to give them the opportunity to relax and let the choices of songs flow naturally as though they were doing a gig where the audience (in this case, me, Marsha, Ron, and maybe a couple of others) could occasionally make requests. Marsha and I paid for two recording sessions at Nightwing. As far as I can recall we had only one evening with Jesse and “Peaches”. My intention was to document the work of the long-lived duo and to record some of Jesse’s originals as well as some of the blues songs that Jesse grew up with.

Cole Fonseca was born and raised in rural town of Woodlake, Ca on Friday the thirteenth of December 1982. He was raised by Legendary cowboys, bikers and outlaws. Cole has been playing harmonica since age seven and has become one of the worlds pioneers of the instrument. Cole in 2005 had established himself as a guitar player earning him an opening slot for BB King in the great city of Los Angeles. Just a month later on December the sixteenth Cole a passenger in a vehicle, was ejected out the back windsheild leaving him paralysis of the left arm. That dark valley alone would silence a musician. However it just made Cole better than ever. His voice, writing and harp playing shot through the roof making Cole an absolute Blues Rock titan. He spent four years on a record called The Phoenix Jubilee which has been hailed as an epic modern blues masterpiece. On October 22nd, 2011 Fonseca would hold a concert that would create a moment that would define the very substance of his heart. He would walk out on the stage with his guitar on his lap, a slide on his thumb and would singlehandedly play like a poet....

Even in a state of hibernation due to a lack of members, Distinctive Blue does not lose heart: it continues to work and looking for new ways to act (the very existence of BLUEZined! Is one of the main proofs of this, by the way). Now he releases his sixth album, "Shut Up!". The title is self-explanatory: it brings only originally instrumental songs and instrumental versions of several of their songs. In a moment of overexposure to all kinds of information, in several possible ways, the idea is to give a time of all the madness in which Brazil lives today to simply feel the music. Its launching, on September 7, when we traditionally have to listen to dozens of vague, rehearsed and hypocritical discourses, was no accident.

Of course, the band has enough unreleased songs for a completely new album, but faces a period of crisis, where gathering a group to rehearse and enter the studio is unfeasible, at least in its still present host city, Vitoria da Conquista, southwest from Bahia. Perrengues common to those who make blues in Brazil. The album, possibly the only sound work to be released in 2017 by DB, was released with the aim of reminding the fans that there is still what to expect: the band did not die, just fell and is rising again, like everything else warrior who cares.

The new album will be available on major streaming platforms and virtual stores. Jimmie Vaughan's second solo album, Out There, is quite similar to its predecessor, Strange Pleasure, delivering a familiar blend of Texas blues and roadhouse blues-rock. Of course, that isn't a problem. Ever since the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Vaughan has been at the forefront of Texas blues-rock, and while he's calmed down some with age, he remains a vital, classy guitarist -- even on the weaker material, his tasteful solos are utterly engaging. Jan Gerfast was born in - 54. He was raised in Osby, a little town in Sweden. He started to play the blues guitar in the end of the 60s.

Living as a vagabond in the 70s. Stayed among other places in Paris, France as a street musician and later on playing in a jazzclub there.

Came home again and started a band called "Blue Night". This band played experimental rock music. At this time Jan lived a kind of hippie life in the woods !

In the beginning of the 80s Jan was backing up other swedish artists live and on records.

In the end of the 80s he formed his blues band and started to play a lot live in Sweden. Later on the rest of Scandinavia, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Poland etc.

Originally played as the George Shovlin Blues Band, between 1995 and 2005. In 2014, the same band re-formed as ‘George Shovlin and The Radars’ with the prime intention of establishing themselves on the National blues scene.

After making a huge impact in the NE, they very quickly progressed to playing a number of prestigious Northern gigs and finally playing the Great British Rock and Blues Festival, Skegness, followed by festival appearances at Fife Jazz and Blues Festival, Reivers Rock and Blues Festival, Durham Blues Festival, Diggle Blues Festival, Maryport Blues Festival, Mainsforth Music Festival, Bell Rock Blues Festival, Arbroath, culminating in playing on the British 'Blues Matters' Stage at the Great British Rock and Blues Festival, Colne, at the end of August. In January, 2016 the band played again at the Great British R & B Festival, Skegness as well as a number of other festivals and commenced a short national tour in May, 2016.

This year they have already played at the Durham and Cleethorpes Blues Festivals and are booked to play the Southport and Bowness Bay Blues Festivals in 2018. In March, 2018 the band embarks on a 5-date tour of SE England.

For over 15 years, Canadian blues artist Manitoba Hal has been forging a career as one of the country’s most preeminent roots and blues multi-instrumentalists. With 14 recordings under his own name and appearances on countless others, guitarist, ukulele master and singer-songwriter Manitoba Hal is a musical renaissance man.

Known for his deep baritone voice and mastery of his instrument – whether it be on guitar or his trusty ukulele - Manitoba Hal takes his audience from the deep south to the islands with songs that are mournful, hopeful, silly, romantic and introspective. His original songs have become modern classics and his take on standards and popular blues songs of the past have brought him to the forefront of the blues scene. Manitoba Hal has been influenced equally by artists such as Gordon Lightfoot and Stephen Fearing as much as blues forefathers Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. These influences offer a uniquely Canadian sound to Hal’s blues and work to tie together the exceptional prose in his lyrics with grit and spirit of blues music.

Beginning his career as a guitarist, Manitoba Hal began to play the ukulele when he inherited a 1955 Martin uke from his beloved grandfather who told him “you can have it if you learn to play it”. And so, he did, continuing to master the tiny instrument, thus proving that the ukulele can be small but mighty as he pulls out powerful riffs and melodies adding background beats with looping technology showcasing the blues in all its passion and groove. His approach to playing is simple – there’s not a lot of flash, just a brilliant understanding of the music, the mood and his audience. In an average year Hal performs over 150 shows throughout Canada, Europe and Australia. Be it a crowd of one or 1000, Manitoba Hal gives 100% of his energy and ability at each performance to ensure a night to remember.

Stax Singles, Vol. 4: Rarities & The Best Of The Rest, a 6-CD box set that delves deep into the Stax Records archives, and explores the label’s efforts to diversify their output. This new addition to the critically acclaimed series of Stax singles boxes offers a more profound study of the Memphis label’s catalog, including long-forgotten B-sides and rarities, and focusing not just on soul tunes – for which the label was most famous – but also offering a cross-section of rock, pop, blues, gospel and country recordings from 1960-1975.

Featuring recordings from the catalogs of both Craft and Rhino Entertainment – the Catalog Division of Warner Music – who jointly control Stax’s iconic masters, this comprehensive box set is the perfect companion piece to Vols. 1-3; the first of which, The Complete Stax/Volt Singles 1959-1968, was released by Atlantic Records in 1991 and reissued by Rhino in 2016. Volumes 2 and 3, originally released by Stax in 1993 and 1994 respectively, and reissued by Concord in 2015, offered soul singles spanning 1968-1975, collectively. In his introduction, co-producer Bill Belmont discusses the concept behind Vol. 4: “Over the years, within the collector-fan circuit, and in reissues and collections of vintage Stax material worldwide, some ‘B’ sides have attained a status comparable to the promoted work.” Adds Rob Bowman, in his essay regarding the soul portion of the box, “[Stax’s B-sides] are, by and large, better than most companies’ A-sides.” Continues Belmont, “Stax’s ‘other side’…has never been presented on its own – thus here, the “other” [imprints] are all gathered under the Stax umbrella; part of the all-encompassing rubric ‘where everything is everything.’”

While Stax is primarily known for its soul music – Vols. 1-3 focused exclusively on that genre – the label also managed a variety of imprints throughout the ’60s and ’70s, many of which explored new sonic avenues, including rock (from Ardent, Enterprise and Hip), gospel (Chalice, Gospel Truth) and country (Enterprise). Also compiled are several instrumental and blues tracks from the earliest days of the label, when it was known as Satellite Records. The collection includes over 60 wide-ranging artists, including the Staple Singers, Big Star, the Bar-Kays, Jean Knight, Don Nix, the Rance Allen Group and Johnnie Taylor.

Stax Singles, Vol. 4: Rarities & The Best Of The Rest comes at the conclusion of a wide-ranging celebration of Stax Records’ 60th Anniversary by both Craft and Rhino. The unique partnership of the labels commemorated the first marketing collaboration of the Stax recordings, which had been divided since Atlantic Records split with Stax Records in early 1968. Throughout 2017, the two labels have collectively released over 15 vinyl reissues, including Rufus Thomas’ debut Walking The Dog, Sam & Dave’s Soul Men and Carla Thomas’ Carla LP (Rhino), as well as titles like Melvin Van Peebles’ Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, the Sons of Truth’s Message From The Ghetto and John Gary Williams’ self-titled debut (Craft). Special attention was also focused on two Stax giants this year: Isaac Hayes and Otis Redding. Craft released a series of remastered, high-resolution digital reissues for Hayes (vinyl reissues will follow in 2018) as well as the critically acclaimed box set, Spirit Of Memphis (1962-1976). Rhino paid tribute to Redding with mono editions of Soul Ballads and The Soul Album, as well as a forthcoming seven-LP vinyl box, The Definitive Studio Albums Collection, while Concord released the double LP Live From The Whisky A Go Go earlier in the year. Looking ahead, Rhino will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Redding’s best-selling “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” single. For Record Store Day’s Black Friday event, Rhino commemorated the 50th anniversary of Redding’s Live In Europe Album with a limited-edition red vinyl pressing, while Concord saluted ’70s rockers Big Star with a live tribute to their Third album, Stroke It, Noel: Big Star’s THIRD In Concert, as well as Hayes, with a vinyl edition of Spirit of Memphis, offering highlights from the box set. Additionally, during the Stax 60th celebration, both labels collaborated on the Stax Classics series of CDs, highlighting Stax’s biggest stars, while the 3-CD collection Soulsville U.S.A. culled material from both Concord’s and Rhino’s masters, much like Stax Singles, Vol. 4.
