CW Ayon may call the Southwestern deserts of New Mexico home but his soul is deeply rooted in the Blues and grooves of the Mississippi Hill Country. With a rather simple kick/snare and tambourine setup he lays down solid beats while picking out some catchy hooks on anything from acoustic to resonator guitars. Sometimes dropping in a bit of harmonica for good measure. All the while building a sound and playing style that is deceptively larger than it seems. Cooper "CW" Ayon has lived in various places around his beloved state New Mexico, but hails originally from Reserve. His wife, Carol, is a trained musician who taught him how to play the guitar. He excelled with this instrument before he could learn to read notes and joined a few Las Cruces bands in 2004, including the Dirty Clydes. In these bands, he played rock music and covers and — being a blues man — tried to add as much blues as he could. After the bands split, Ayon struck out on his own, literally, as his own drummer, guitar player and singer.

Josh Smith was born October 7, 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut. Before he was 1, his family relocated to Florida, eventually settling in Pembroke Pines, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. At age 3, he received his first guitar and at 6, he started taking guitar lessons.

Josh was exposed to the blues at an early age. He listened to a variety of artists, such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Albert King and T-Bone Walker. He also started going to concerts, including the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.

By 12, Josh was playing at established professional blues jams in South Florida, such as Musicians Exchange Café in Fort Lauderdale and Club M in Hollywood, FL.

Josh began sitting in with such greats as Jimmy Thackery, Tinsley Ellis, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Johnny “Clyde” Copeland, Double Trouble, Joanna Connor and Kim Simmonds, among others. Jimmy Thackery said of the 14-year-old, “Josh is three heartbreaks away from being a true blues guitar genius.” At 14, Josh released his first CD, Born Under a Blue Sign, and at 15, he released his second CD, Woodsheddin.

In 2000 the Blues Cousins was awarded the best blues band at “Blues Sur Seine” festival in France among 57 bands from all over the globe. Few weeks later Levan Lomidze (lead guitarist and the singer ) was awarded by the Moscow government for the gig –“Blues Against the Drugs”

In 2003 and 2004 the band made two big (three month) tours in USA performing more than 70 gigs and took part in 15 blues festivals in Washington , Idaho , Montana and other states.

In the summer of 2004 Blues Cousins singed contract with “Jazz Stream Records” ( USA ) and recorded and released live CD in USA .

In January 2005 the Blues Cousins made another tour in Washington and Montana . This way The Blues Cousins became the first Russian blues band recognized and demanded in US - the homeland of blues and jazz.

Terry Evans' fifth solo effort - not including two with fellow vocalist Bobby King - is his first not featuring guitar master and ex-employer Ry Cooder. While that may disappoint Cooder fans, especially since his work on previous Evans discs was some of the guitarist's best and most incisive non-soundtrack R&B/rock/blues playing of the '90s, it allows this album more room for the singer and his rugged touring group to strut their stuff.

Recorded primarily live in the studio in only four days with his longtime backing musicians, Mississippi Magic is a rollicking example of Evans' uncut, non-commercialized, gritty gospel and swamp vocals. He reprises and rearranges the earlier tracks "Let Love Begin" and "Where We Gonna Go," which were originally recorded on albums with King.

He also taps Jorge Calderon (who goes under the alias of J.C. Parsons for two more, and turns in stunning versions of "Don't Let the Green Grass Fool You" and especially Willie Dixon's "Mellow Down Easy." The latter finds his band locking together on a joyous, upbeat groove where Evans is positively jubilant and proves how tight and capable this group is.

Elsewhere, guitarist Jesse Samsel turns in solos that are so similar to Cooder's - especially when he lets his slide loose on "Let Love Begin" - you'll be checking the liner notes to be sure who's playing. Evans digs into this material with the gruff but affable approach that added such down-home Southern soul to Cooder's and Hans Theessink's work. His version of Theessink's "Where the Southern Crosses the Dog" is one of this disc's highlights, but there is truly not a weak track here. Whether he's singing straight blues or testifying with religion-soaked R&B, Evans brings ferocious, rousing soul power to Mississippi Magic. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Eight To The Bar, which is based in Connecticut but often hits the road (performing as many as 200 dates in a year), is considered one of the hottest and most versatile swing bands around. Founded and led by keyboardist-singer Cynthia Lyon, the group has recorded 11 albums since 1980. Their latest recording, The Romper Room, is impressive on several levels. 11 of its 12 songs are originals by band members; five of the six musicians contributed tunes. The styles range from retro swing, Louis Prima and Bill Haley to bits of Latin, pop and early r&b. The musicianship is first rate and the singing, which often features two male and two female vocalists, gives the band a distinctive sound of its own.

But most of all, this music is fun and always danceable. The vocals (each of the four singers have opportunities to be in the lead) alternate with excellent solos by Ms. Lyon (on piano and organ), Collin Tilton (tenor, flute and clarinet), and guitarist Tom Whalen. Fine support is contributed by bassist Michael Corsini, drummer Shawn Meehan and vocalist/ percussionist Brinna Jones. All in all, The Romper Room is an entertaining show with more than its share of variety, all of it taken at danceable tempos. Several of the original songs could catch on if also covered by other groups. Eight To The Bar is definitely a band to check out, either on record or live.

Casey MacGill writes and performs music that swings. A classic Hollywood character in appearance and style, MacGill plays boogie-woogie, swing, and stride piano - Fats Waller meets Fats Domino. Casey has developed a signature vocal sound; he has a way with a torch song, and enjoys the adventure of scat singing. MacGill's repertoire covers a range of material from the Gershwins to Leiber & Stoller to those low-down, dirty blues. He blows a lyrical cornet, but his most unique instrumental voice is a 6-string tenor ukulele.

Casey grew up in Southern California. As a member of "The Magic Mushroom", he and the band (including jazz singer Marilyn Scott) caravanned up to the legendary Monterey Pop Festival. Back in Pasadena, MacGill majored in music at Pasadena City College, and Cal State LA, studying with jazz greats Gary Foster, Warne Marsh, and Buddy Collette. At the famous folk club the Ice House, Casey's first 20's-30's band opened for Lily Tomlin. His interest in vintage American music was kindled by cartoonist and painter Robert Armstrong, which led to a long musical association with members of R.Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders. As a member of The Rubber Band, MacGill appeared on the Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson), and recorded for Atlantic Records. He also appeared on the infamous Gong Show.

In 1980, MacGill formed the fabulous 30's-style vocal trio, Mood Indigo, which appeared in the movies Frances and Swing Shift, toured in the US, Australia, and Japan. The band was a favorite of LA audiences, and enjoyed celebrity sit-ins Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell, Martha Raye, and the Manhattan Transfer. At an intimate, but star-studded affair, a Mr. Fred Astaire spontaneously broke into a soft-shoe as the band gently vamped for the guests poolside.

After relocating to the Pacific Northwest, Casey played in many bands culminating with The Spirits of Rhythm. Their award-winning, still popular CD "Jump" became a classic of the 1990's swing-era, and has attracted fans all over the world. The CD caught the attention of director Lynn Taylor-Corbett, and catapulted MacGill to star in the Broadway show "Swing". Casey wrote songs for the show, and several tracks from the Jump CD were also included in the score. Swing was nominated for 5 Tonys, and the cast CD received a Grammy nomination.

Mitch Kashmar is an established West Coast harmonica veteran who has been knocking around for several decades but first made a dent on the international blues scene with his 2005 Delta Groove debut, Nickels & Dimes. As if to make up for lost time, he followed it up a year later with Wake Up and Worry, another solid blast of left coast swinging blues. Ignore the cartoonish and rather garish cover of a groggy Kashmar in a bathrobe surrounded by scantily clad models and dive into the disc for a rollicking jump blues party. Kashmar has a surprisingly compelling and distinctive voice, but it's his astounding harp work that propels this music.

Sure, there is plenty of Little Walter's overdriven electrified blowing in his style - he covers both "Dead Presidents" and Walter's "Up the Line" - but Kashmar puts his individual stamp on this sizzling music. Blues fans familiar with Little Charlie & the Nightcats will want to own this as well, since Kashmar works comparable territory. The harpist/singer takes a break from his jaunty style for "I'm Sorry," a jazzy R&B ballad with female backing singers and some tasty guitar lines from John Marx. Elsewhere, Rusty Zinn and Junior Watson, two of the finest West Coast guitarists, add their energy and talent to an album that has no low points.

Those who remember the late William Clarke will also gravitate toward this as Kashmar works a similar groove and possesses the same combination of nimbleness and attitude that characterized Clarke at his finest. The album's closing instrumental shuffle of "The Waddle" will leave any blues fan impressed with its thick, gooey solos but the entire disc is one of the finest contemporary blues harp albums of the year. If Kashmar can maintain the quality and pace of this output, he should find belated fame as the master of the instrument he obviously is. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Born when "Professor" Doug Bell asked "Gentleman" Joe Cooper if he wanted to start an "original" band, Bellevue Cadillac has come to be one of the hottest and most original bands around and a leader in the resurgence of the swing era (as if it ever left!). On Black and White, little of the band's rock-the-roof-off energy is lost. In fact, the only things missing are the fedoras and big suits.

From the opening rip into the title track to the final thumps of "Heartbeat," the album is a 12-part story of passion for everything "real" - from music to cars to women and much more. Having played with a bevy of artist ranging from the Blues Brothers to Prince, Cadillac churns together echoes of swing and jazz giants like Count Basie and Duke Ellington (whose classic "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" is playfully sampled on the opening cut) with a Stax-y R&B vibe, down-home blues (lead by Bell's whining and wailing big-bodied six-string) and even a bit of doo wop.

Black and White is a colorful journey where each turn reveals a different side of the Bellevue sound, all of which shine like the chrome of a classic Cadillac tailpipe. Mitch Kashmar is one of the finest blues singers and harp players in the world today, and a gifted songwriter to boot. Johnny Ferreira is a Canadian who just released his newest album, Rock & Roll Saxophonist. His primary musical influences include sax players Illinois Jacquet, Big Jay McNeely, and Joe Huston. Previously Ferreira worked with The Colin James Little Big Band where he was featured in a horn section that included Roomful of Blues alumni and members Greg Piccolo, Doug James, Rich Lataille, Bob Enos, and Carl Querfurth. This is Ferreira's fourth album and on it he has focused on an early Rock 'n' Roll sound. Ferreira states the "Roll" comes from Jump Blues or Swing and it differentiates this music from "Rock."

The songs are all written or co-written by Ferreira except one. He also handles all the production chores. The album rolls relentlessly from start to finish. Opening with a boogie-woogie piano, "Wine Women & Song" takes off when Ferreira sails into his first sax solo, squealing and squawking until Colin James' guitar relieves him. Ferreira, along with sisters Melissa and Cecile Larochelle, is a effective as a backing singer. Ferreira's second solo is slamming and the track ends with the trumpet, trombone, and sax trading phrases. "Swing That Thing" continues to use the backing singers and they are used effectively on this sonnet. "Dancin' Is Not My Thing" opens with either Cathy St. Germain or Saffron Henderson (both singers are credited on this track) asking, "Can I please have this dance?" The call and response makes for some joyous noise. "If That Ain't Love" is the only song not authored by Ferreira and it comes from the German Blues band BB and The Blues Shacks. Ferreira's sax is blistering here.

"Lady" is a slower ballad and a good one; it gives this set a break from its relentless pace. Ferreira's sax and Graham Guest's Hammond B3 complete this lady's choice, dance-type number. "Let's Rock Tonite" is a Louis Jordan-type romp. "Mean Mr. Senf" is a sax instrumental and Ferreira sounds like Bill Doggett, it's that good! "Nighty Gown" is a sexy song and possibly the album's best lyric with "I don't even watch the Stanley Cup, when you're wearing that nighty gown". Next is "Creeps" with "always touching/man you give me the creeps." The CD concludes with "Chompin' At The Bit," another instrumental. Rock & Roll Saxophonist wails from start to finish. This is one of 2006's best self-produced efforts yet. /Richard Ludmerer

Recorded over a two year period at Ranscombe Studios in Rochester, Kent under the guidance of producer Jim Riley, these songs show how diverse a band Big River can be, all the while remaining true to their signature sound.
The band had written close to 30 songs for this album however the songs originally recorded are the ones that remain. 9 songs with just over 30 minutes running time, this is according to Jim Riley “a perfect cut for vinyl”. Redemption is the sound of a band taking you on a journey through their innermost feelings, the lyrics are heartfelt and tell a story, the music is from deep down inside their souls. Three years of playing together on the live circuit has given the band their own identity playing honest, no frills, Hard Rock music.

In recent years, Dallas-based guitarist Anson Funderburgh has taken his band the Rockets out of the clubs and onto the festival stages with his critically acclaimed recordings for the BlackTop label out of New Orleans. With Jackson, MS-native Sam Myers delivering the vocals and harmonica treatments, this band mixes up a powerful gumbo of Texas jump blues and Delta blues that can't be found anywhere else. Funderburgh & His Rockets are a particularly hard working band, performing across the U.S. and Europe nearly 300 nights a year.

Funderburgh was born November 15, 1954, and got hooked on the blues when he got his first guitar at age seven or eight. His first musical experiences happened in the clubs in Dallas. He developed his team approach to blues music while learning from the likes of Freddie King, Jimmy Reed, and Albert Collins when these great bluesmen were passing through Dallas-area clubs, but Funderburgh had already taught himself guitar mostly from listening to classic blues records. He never had the chance to see Muddy Waters, but he did get to play with Lightnin' Hopkins in the late '70s. Funderburgh formed the Rockets in 1978, but didn't meet Sam Myers until 1982.

Funderburgh recorded with the Fabulous Thunderbirds on their Butt Rockin' album, and went solo in 1981, when the New Orleans-based BlackTop label released Talk to You by Hand, the label's first release. Funderburgh added Myers on harmonica and lead vocals in 1986. Myers had traveled for years on the chitlin circuit, where he had the chance to accompany people like Elmore James and Robert Junior Lockwood. Funderburgh admits that adding Myers on vocals and harmonica was a turning point for the Rockets, partly because of the image they project from the stage, a big towering black man and three white guys backing him up. Funderburgh continued his association in the '90s with Black Top releasing Tell Me What I Want to Hear (1991), Live at Grand Emporium (1995), and That's What They Want (1997). After releasing nine albums on Black Top, in 1999 Funderburgh changed record labels with the release of Change in my Pocket for Bullseye Blues. At the beginning of the new millennium, Funderburgh is just coming into his prime by way of his songwriting talents, so his career deserves close watching in the coming years. This is a great record from a virtually unknown. Duncan's 65 years old, lived on the Westside most of his life, and plays harp in the styles of Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo. Little Arthur Duncan is a powerful blues singer and harmonica player who pounds away at you with his voice, reminiscent of the heavy, unpolished blues singers like Floyd Jones. Arthur has been surrounded by the classic postwar sounds almost all of his life. At sixty five, he's part of the second generation of Chicago bluesmen, just behind Muddy, Wolf, Sonny Boy #2 and Elmore James. If you're a student of the Michigan rock & roll scene of the '60s, the Prime Movers are a band you've probably read about but not actually heard. Founded in Ann Arbor in 1965, the Prime Movers were part of the nascent scene that would explode a few years later with the rise of the MC5 and the Stooges, but while their contemporaries were dynamic, high-energy rock bands, the Movers were loyal to the blues and specialized in stretched-out Chicago-style electric jams, suggesting a more doctrinaire Michigan version of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The Prime Movers had a significant Midwest following in their heyday, but since they never made a record, they're best remembered today for what their alumni went on to accomplish.

Lead guitarist Dan Erlewine went on to become a guitar repairman to the stars and a columnist for Guitar Player magazine; his brother Michael Erlewine, who handled lead vocals, harp, and guitar, would found the All Music Guide website and database; keyboard man Robert Sheff became a noted avant-garde composer under the name Blue "Gene" Tyranny; bassist Jack Dawson would join the Siegel-Schwall Blues Band; and drummer James Osterberg transformed himself into America's leading streetwalking cheetah, Iggy Pop.

Nearly 50 years after the Prime Movers broke up, one can finally get a taste of what the band was about with The Prime Movers Blues Band, a release drawn from live tapes of the group on-stage in their glory days. These recordings certain clear up the mystery of what the band was about, but judging from The Prime Movers Blues Band, their most notable accomplishment was being a credible blues band made of young white guys at a time when that was all but unknown. Dan Erlewine's guitar work is the star of this show, and he shows off solid chops and an imaginative approach to soloing, while Michael's harp work is good and shows he'd spent plenty of time with his Little Walter records, and Osterberg was a fine drummer with an indefatigable shuffle.

But the group's stylistic purity also turns out to be their Achilles' heel; most of the time, the musicians take care not to stray too far from the original versions of these blues standards, and as strong as their interpretations may be, they lack the adventure that the Butterfield Blues Band brought to their take on the blues - good as the Prime Movers were, there's nothing here that suggests they could create something as visionary as East-West. Significantly, the most exciting performance here is a cover of Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man," where Iggy takes the lead vocal and pushes the rhythm beyond the mid-tempo shuffle that dominates nearly everything else. The Prime Movers Blues Band is a fun listen and historically invaluable, but it's never the mind-blowing find that one may have dreamed of. /Mark Deming, AllMusic
